A NOTE FROM PASTOR TIM

Greetings in Jesus’ name.

My challenge for this summer is for us to read through the New Testament chronologi-cally. Last month in the newsletter there was a reading schedule, well not so much a schedule, but an order of how to read the New Testament chronologically. The purpose of this is to help us understand how our brothers and sisters in Christ at the beginning experienced the Holy Spirit and the growth of the church.

As you read through the New Testament this summer keep in mind and ask yourself?

What passages or thoughts stick out to you? Why?

What is your experience in reading?

How is God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit being revealed to you?

Summer is a time of rest and relaxation. A time when we take a time out from our various activities of the rest of the year. As we take time out to be with God in our reading of the New Testament “Be Still and know [that] God [is with you], (Psalm 46:19).

I look forward to hearing how your reading is going and what you are experiencing.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Tim

ADULT FORUM BIBLE STUDY

Important Dates

Pastor Tim will be out of town July 9th, August 6th and 22nd. During July 9th, he will be receiving train-ing on Stephen Ministry which will then be imple-mented at King of Kings. As previously reported, Pastor Roy Hoffman, an active duty Chaplain will officiate in Pastors absence.

The Worship & Music committee set forth the following dates: Sept. 10, the Music Festival; Sept. 17, resume two worship services 8 and 10:30; October 29, the reformation celebration; Nov. 22, Thanksgiving Eve Services; Dec. 24 (a Sunday) morning services will be advent and two eve services celebrating Christmas. The committee also discussed having a healing service.

The semi-annual Congregational Meeting will be held on July 23, 2017 @10:45 a.m.

Reports

Pastor Dave mentioned that Pastor Tim will be lead-ing a discussion on reading the New Testament in historical order for July and for teaching liturgy in August.

Pastor Dave reported that the WiFi installation has been completed. It is available in the church and TGP. However there is more work to be done, pos-sibly by a professional since there are still elements such as scanning and faxing that cannot be done.

The Treasurer, Don Miller, reported that we needed to withdraw from our Cellular account to make up a shortfall of $8200.00 As reported in last months Highlights, a Bequest of $81,605 was given to the church. It has been researched and found that, as directed by the donor, it will go to the BOV (mortgage fund).

Joan Bockman distributed charts tracking our attendance which indicated the trend line gradually on the incline. Our challenge is to have a total of 100 attendees at services.

The Congregational Life committee was compli-mented on the very nice reception for Pastors’ Installation by the Council. In fact many accolades were also given on the liturgical part as well as the musical part of the ceremony of Sunday’s service.

Our Military Ministry liaison, Tom Powers, report-ed that he and his mother, Shirley, had visited Pastor Browns Sunday a.m. services at the Ranch at Camp Pendleton. It is recognized as a Lutheran service. In fact, the hymnals used are from King of Kings given when they were replaced by the Cranberry hymnals. And, they are plainly marked King of Kings. Most at this service are young fami-

lies. While we are not allowed to give Christian education on a military base, Pastor Tim offered that those kinds of services plus confirmation, etc., can be done at our church.

Pastor Dave reported that our Audit Committee is continuing to do their job. It was determined that our employee bonding insurance had been discontinued and needs to be re-instated. The Audit of our offerings and their handling indicates a good job. We are presently working on the compliance of the IRS rules and regulations pertaining to our situation.

Our Music Director continues to interview for the Organist position.

The property committee (Ruth Szabados) has painted over the graffiti that had been painted on our back wall. The offense had been reported to the police. They advise that graffiti should be painted over as quickly as possible so there is no gratification for the offenders efforts at advertising his tagging.

Loretta reported that a generous member of WELCA has purchased, for the church, a semi-professional BINGO set to be used in future fund or just fun raisers.

Pete Aadland is continuing to advocate for us for the sale of our cellular sites. We still have not received a bid that would achieve our goal of elim-inating the mortgage on our buildings. However, he continues in the quest. An exploration will be made in the wisdom of accepting a lesser bid and putting that money to work to obtain our stated goal.

Howard Whitlock and his team have completed the Facilities Use Agreement for any large groups that wish to rent our facilities . It is in the process of being printed and will be submitted to the coun-cil at their next meeting.

The next council meeting will be held July 11, 2017 @ 7:00 p.m.

THE COMPLETE MINUTES OF THIS

MEETING ARE POSTED ON THE MAIN BULLETIN BOARD IN THE NARTHEX

CIRCLE BIBLE STUDY & FELLOWSHIP

During the summer months of July and August, Circles take a hiatus. This is because there are vacations, family visits and other things that cause scheduling problems. However, during August, it is customary that the Circles meet for combined study, normally conducted by our presiding Pastor. The date has been set as August 19, 2017 at 10:00 am in The Gathering Place. Mark your calendars now!!

The schedule, printed below remains in effect for the balance of 2017, as do the leaders.

Lydia Circle: 2nd Monday of month @ 1:00 pm Leader: Nancy Groth - 760-754-9646

Ruth Circle: 2nd Monday of month @ 7:00 pm Leader: Faye Cieslinski - 760-690-2540

Naomi Circle: 2nd Tuesday of month @ 9:30 am Leader: Donna Miller - 760-433-2988

PIECEMAKERS

The Quilters will resume their regu-lar schedule starting July 6th. They had many of their group on vacation during June so found it necessary to close down.

As you may recall, the Quilter’s display their quilts before shipping them out in the fall. You may wonder why this is done. There are many examples of Lutheran churches across our nation doing the same thing. It is commonly called a “Dedication” or a “Blessing”. And, why would we do this? The goal is the same with either dedication, blessing or whatever it is called, and that is “to give thanks to God and to lift up our neighbors near and far – whose hands have and will touch the gifts of LWR Quilts and Kits – in prayer”. Remember that the conditions of those to whom these quilts are distributed are usually dire. God’s hands are in this during the making of the quilt, the warehouse, the container ship, and certainly to the recipients who are families, chil-dren and people struggling with the problems that have beset them. And, while we are at this, say a prayer for those stalwart women who show up every Thursday to do God’s work.

CALENDER – STANDING DATES

Bookies: Our selection for the month of July is A Man Called Ove by Frederick Backman. It is a story of a grumpy yet loveable old man who finds his world turned upside down when a boisterous young family moves next door. Sounds like a good movie starring Bill Murray. Join us.

PAST and UP COMING DATES

Synodical Gathering: During November 3 & 4 our gathering will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church in Solana Beach. Housing will be in Carlsbad since there is a large event in Del Mar. This is the 30th year for the event. There will be more on this in later Newsletters.

WOMEN’S WIT and WISDOM

Since July is normally associated with freedom, patriotism, and all things politic men are often quoted with wise sayings. I found one attributed

to a woman, Dolores Ibarruri, in a speech made in 1936. She was a Spanish Republican heroine of the Spanish Civil War. She said:

“It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees”!

Sort of a female Patrick Henry.

SEMI-ANNUAL CONGREGATION MEETING

July 23, 2017, 10:45 am

We will meet in the “Gathering Place” for presentations of our Ministries and Financial statements. All KOK members are encouraged to attend this important and informative meeting following our morning worship service. A very big thank you to my family of friends at King of Kings for all your prayers and con-cerns for my daughter, Laurie. .

I can’t thank Jan Osborne and Don Miller enough for driving as back and forth to City of Hope.

Laurie is recovering at Scripps, Encinitas in Rehab. now and hopefully the worse part is over, but it will still be a long recovery. Keep praying.

Thank you again, Loretta Gerken
