Dear Friends:
This year’s Commissioning weekend will be unlike anything we’ve experienced before. But that is not something to be regretted. In fact, we should rejoice, because right before our eyes God is once again fulfilling the promise of Isaiah 43:19 -- He is doing a new thing. He is making for us a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. He is directing the Army into new avenues of evangelism and discipleship. He is showing us that there is still much work to be done.
The question, then, is not how the Messengers of the Kingdom will be ordained, commissioned, and appointed. The real question is how each of us will respond to the changed circumstances in which we now live. Are we willing to join the Messengers in fulfilling the Army’s mission? Are we ready to dedicate ourselves to proclaiming the gospel in unfamiliar ways? Are you and I ready to consider the whole world, including both those who live next door and those who live halfway around the globe, as neighbors entitled to our love and attention?
Sanctified innovation is at the heart of what it means to be a Salvationist, and years from now, people will look back and say that this Commissioning was a shining example of just that. So let’s enter into this special weekend believing that God will use it not only to inspire us, but to inspire generations of Salvationists yet to come.
May God bless you, and may He bless the Messengers of the Kingdom!
Very truly yours,

June 9, 2019 CADETS OF THE MESSENGERS OF COMPASSION SESSION USA WESTERN TERRITORY Dear Cadets: On this momentous occasion, the covenant that each of you has made with God is sealed by your commissioning and appointment as officers of The Salvation Army. The solemn joy and deep significance of this day will be something that you never forget, and my wife and I rejoice in the fact that we are privileged to be part of it. As Messengers of Compassion, you will have innumerable opportunities to proclaim salvation through Christ, and you will help those who already know the Lord grow in their relationship with Him. You will be a source of comfort to those who are in pain, an example to those who are lost, and a light to those who live in darkness. In no small way, your life and your ministry will represent the gospel itself. In all of this, I urge you to seek the power of the Holy Spirit. Ask the Spirit to give you wisdom, ask Him to give you understanding, and ask Him to remove from your heart anything that would either reduce the impact of your witness or cloud the message you proclaim. He will always answer. He will provide you with all you need. As General Albert Osborn wrote in the last line of his most famous song, “I know I can find this in Thee.” May God bless you richly in every way. Very truly yours.

Dear Messengers of the Kingdom:
Gregory Peck became a ‘star’ for his portrayal of a missionary priest sent to China in the movie ‘The Keys of the Kingdom.’ This priest faced his challenges growing up but committed himself to fulfill a call on his life to serve the Lord wherever he was appointed. The priest was faithful through times of famine and plenty, war and peace, seeing lives transformed one at a time. He was used by God even extending into his retirement years. God still calls men and women to serve the Lord faithfully for a lifetime of service; and you, the Messengers of the Kingdom, have accepted your individual call from the Lord.
At this Commissioning and Ordination, it is a privilege to welcome you into the ranks of Officership. Being equipped and now empowered you share the ‘keys of the kingdom’ to go and make disciples, teaching and helping them grow in the Lord, and serving people in need. You receive your commissions to go to the places appointed and there you will make a difference. Resting on the knowledge that Christ called, equipped and empowered you, with Spirit filled confidence you will effect change in lives and glorify God by extending His kingdom.
The Lord will continue to bless you and fan your passion for God and others. You have the authority to seek and save those who are lost and don’t even realize it. As you introduce Jesus to people and walk alongside them you will witness the power of God’s grace. In the name of Jesus, you will meet needs and influence those who come within your sphere of influence. I am confident God will use you, the Messengers of the Kingdom, to fulfill your lifelong call and covenant.
This is a milestone in your walk with the Lord and you are surrounded by people who love you. So now go with intentionality and remember ‘The coming of the Kingdom of God is not something that can be observed . . . The Kingdom of God is within your midst.’ Luke 17:20-21

AFFIRMATION OF FAITHTHE CADETS:In the name of God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and in the presence of the officers, soldiers and friends of The Salvation Army here assembled, we declare that:
WE BELIEVEThat the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and that they only constitute the Divine rule of Christian faith and practice.
That there is only one God, who is infinitely perfect, the Creator, Preserver, and Governor of all things, and who is the only proper object of religious worship.
That there are three persons in the Godhead – the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, undivided in essence, and co-equal in power and glory.
That in the person of Jesus Christ the Divine and human natures are united, so that He is truly and properly God and truly and properly man.
That our first parents were created in a state of innocency, but by their disobedience they lost their purity and happiness, and that in consequence of their fall all men have become sinners, totally depraved, and as such are justly exposed to the wrath of God.
That the Lord Jesus Christ has by His suffering and death made an atonement for the whole world so that whosoever will may be saved.
That repentance towards God, faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit, are necessary to salvation.
That we are justified by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and that he that believeth hath the witness in himself.
That continuance in a state of salvation depends upon continued obedient faith in Christ.
That it is the privilege of all believers to be wholly sanctified, and that their whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In the immortality of the soul; in the resurrection of the body; in the general judgment at the end of the world; in the eternal happiness of the righteous; and in the endless punishment of the wicked.
THE CHIEF SECRETARY:Do you promise faithfully to maintain and proclaim these truths?
THE CADETS: I do!
THE CHIEF SECRETARY: Do you regard it as your duty to bear this witness everywhere, to strive to lead all persons to their only Savior, and for His sake to care for the poor, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, love the unloved, and befriend those who have no friends?
THE CADETS: I do!
THE CHIEF SECRETARY:Do you promise by holy living, boundless charity, and adherence to the principles and discipline of the Army to show yourselves at all times to be faithful officers of The Salvation Army?
THE CADETS: I do!
THE CHIEF SECRETARY:In the name of God I accept the declarations and promises you have made this day. We will now proceed to your commissioning, ordination and appointment.

“Thine Is the Kingdom, Lord”
Thine is the Kingdom, Lord,Thou art the King of kings;Thy realm enfolds the universeAnd Heaven its tribute brings;Though evil forces seemOn earth to hold the sway,Thy loyal peoples wait in faithTo hail Thy crowning day.
Thine is the power, O Lord,Nor Heaven nor earth can break; The oceans move at Thy command,The stars their courses make.Thou canst the breath of manBestow or canst withhold;Of all the wonders of Thy powerNo tongue has ever told.
Thine is the glory, Lord,The greatness and the praise,The final victory over death,The end of mortal days. All majesty is Thine,Beyond the poet’s pen,For Thou art life, and light and love:Amen, amen, amen!
“Be Thou My Vision”
Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart!Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art;Thou my best thought in the day and the night,Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.
Be Thou my wisdom, be Thou my true word;I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;Thou my great Father and I Thy true son;Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one.
Be Thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight;Be Thou my armor and be Thou my might;Be my soul’s shelter and Thou my high tower;Raise Thou me Heavenward,O power of my power!
Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise;Thou my inheritance now and always;Thou and Thou only the first in my heart;High king of Heaven, my treasure Thou art!
High king of Heaven, Thou Heaven’s bright Sun,Grant me its joys after victory is won!Christ of my own heart, whatever befall,Still be my vision, O ruler of all!
