Determining Text OrganizationWhen you read nonfiction articles, determining text organization may help youunderstand the author’s ideas. For example, writers use chronological order toshow the order in which events happened. This order helps you recognize thebeginnings and development of trends, for example. Writers use cause-and-effectorganization to help readers see why things happened or why someone behaved acertain way. Compare-and-contrast is used to present similarities and differencesbetween people, places, things, or events. Proposition and support is used topresent a proposal, support it with evidence, and respond to counterarguments. Asyou read, look for examples of each type of organization, and jot down notes aboutthese examples in the chart below.

Follow-up: Compare and contrast the patterns of organization used by the articleand the speech. Does one use one type of organization more than the other? What isthe overall pattern in each?

How to SummarizeSummarizing means rephrasing in fewer words, capturing the ideas.Follow these guidelines:

• Write the main idea in as few words as possible.• Select the most important details that support the main idea.• Rewrite key ideas, using simpler language and combining points.• Make your summary about one-third as long as the original.• Revise your summary, making sure that you’ve included only the

passage’s key ideas. Check that your summary contains your ownwords, and that you haven’t changed the tone of the original.

Read the examples below. Summarize Original Source II on the lines provided.

Original SourceExperts carefully studied the photos taken by all the Mariners. They did notsee any sign of growing plants. Nor could they find any trace of animals.they decided there is probably no life on Mars. Furthermore, they discoveredthat Mars is being bombarded by cosmic rays and ultraviolet rays. These raysare deadly. They would kill most forms of life that we know about.

—from p. 29 of Discovering Mars, by Melvin Berger

SummaryEvidence from the Mariners not only suggested that no life existson Mars. It also showed why life cannot exist: because of thepresence of deadly cosmic and ultraviolet rays.

Original Source IITerraforming was originally a word from science fiction. It means changing aplanet to make it more like Earth. At first, all the ideas for terraforming Marscame from science fiction. One wild scheme was to start a nuclear reaction inPhobos or Deimos. The reaction would make the moon of Mars into a tiny sun.Its heat would pour down on the frozen planet and melt the water frozen inthe permafrost. The result would be flowing streams and ponds of fresh water.
