Kingdown Week Friday 17th May 2019 Number 30, 2019 Rosie Eliot, director of the Warminster based Wessex MS Centre, accepted a cheque from Kingdown Students Theo Jones and Taylor Jessop, who also regularly volunteer at the centre. The centre was very grateful for the generous donation, raised when the school held a ‘non-uniform’ day and students and staff maid a minimum donation of £1 in support of the centre’s Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week on Friday 26th April. The centre’s Community Fundraiser, Amanda Strong, has also asked for a community tie nomination form for another Kingdown student, in recognition of the regular help they give in their own time with other community events held by the centre. Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, is a lifelong condition that affects the central nervous system, causing a wide range of symptoms which affect people in different ways. Race for the Line is a national competition inspired by the Bloodhound SSC. This competition was created to inspire young people to become more involved in engineering and learn more STEM skills that will be useful later in life. The Kingdown teams competed against ten other teams from five different schools. Students spent an hour designing and creating their cars and later raced them. Kingdown’s first team, Winning Dynamics, went through the timing gate with a time of 59.5 milliseconds and were placed in eighth position. The second team, Finger Lickin’ Good, had a time of 49.5 milliseconds and they came fourth. Thank you to Mr Webster and Mr Bray for taking us on the trip and thank you to Miss Annetts for arranging the trip. Good luck to next year’s teams! Year 7’s Race for the Line in Yeovilton!

Moonwalk 2019On 11th May, Mrs Harris, our School Librarian took part in theLondon Marathon Moonwalk (26.2 miles) to raise funds for thefight against breast cancer. Mrs Harris, with her friend, had been

training hard every weekend,working their way up from a12km walk up to 20 miles.Setting of in Group 2 at10:50pm, they began the longwalk through the night andwere amazed at the constanttraffic with buses running allnight long, but also theamazing camaraderieamongst the women (andsome men) who werecompleting either, the halfmarathon, or the full one. MrsHarris’ daughter cheeredthem on through BatterseaPark and gave much neededchocolate! They passed many

iconic London landmarks including: The London Eye (lit up pinkespecially for the Moonwalk); Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre; TheTate gallery; the iconic, St Paul’s Cathedral, Hyde Park corner toname just a few. The weather was perfect for walking (if a littlecold at 3am!) and eventually they finished where they had startedat Clapham Common exactly eight hours later at 6:50 am havingraised a few hundred pounds for the breast cancer charity.

Take controlof it!Mrs Gordon is running a drop-inrelaxation class for you to learnsome useful techniques to manageexam anxiety. She will be in D7Wednesdays from 3-3.30pm until

the end of GCSEs. Students from year 7 upwards are alsowelcome to attend.

KS3 POSITIVITY FORTNIGHT!Years 7, 8 & 9!May 13th-22ndOver the next 2 weeks we will be focusing on all the positivethings you do.

From Monday 13th  May to Wednesday 22ⁿd May allstudents who receive all positive behaviour points and nonegative points will receive a reward on Friday the 24th.

So make sure you shine in our focus fortnight; get homeworkin on time, answer questions in class, be helpful in tutor andremember your correct uniform.
