Archive film of its activities on the main line right up to 2003 are included. ‘The Story of the Great Western Society at Didcot’ Always considered to be the prime mover in the preservation of ex-Great Western locomotives at the end of steam on the Western Region in 1965, the GWS has, in over 50 years, collected numerous locomotives directly from BR and latterly from Woodhams yard at Barry. Added to that the Soci-ety has ammassed a considerable collection of artefacts and items of memorabilia for exhibition in its museum at Didcot. This programme examines the success of the GWS over this long period and the growth of the site at Didcot over the years. We begin with the early days at Taplow before the old motive power site at Didcot was made available. Footage of these times is added to early times on arrival at Didcot. They include: Main Line Diesel – Produced in 1948, this tells the story of the construction and introduction to service of the first British Main Line Diesel Locomotive, LMS No. 10000, with unique views of the locomotive under construction. Engine On The Shed – Also an LMS production, this time from 1936, showing how a steam locomotive was serviced in the 1930s. The locomotive featured is LMS 6170 British Legion which was the prototype Fury. It is seen in its shortlived single-chimney form. Single Line Working – A BR instructional film, made in 1956 and was filmed on the legendary Somerset and Dorset line at Binegar. ‘Archive programmes’ ‘The Somerset & Dorset remembered’ Here is a vivid reminder of what it was like to travel over that most lamented of cross-country railway lines the Somerset & Dorset. Filmed mostly during the summer of 1965, the final full year before closure in March 1966, the journey takes the viewer on the line from Bath to Evercreech Junction, then along the branch to Highbridge and Burnham, before returning to the main line to con-tinue a journey southwards from Evercreech to Bournemouth. But rather than just filmed from the lineside, many sequences were taken from the footplate or from the carriage window. During the journey the opportunity is taken to ‘stop off’ by means of a series of cam-eos – to recall such memories as ‘road versus rail’ at Radstock and an evocative look at the evening Bath to Binegar train arriving at its destination and, at dusk, preparing for the return run. The line was closed as part of the Beeching Plan of 1963 but due to local opposition survived until 1972 and the track then lifted. The old films show the transformation from horses to machines and are presented by Nancy and Howard Stevens. Films of Corfe Castle and people include features on artists who lived in this quaint village. Filmed in 1937 by David Brynley and Norman Notley.
