Stinger Staff for Second Semester

By: Stinger Staff

Spring Semester welcomed new faces to the Stinger Staff, as six new reporters replaced the two departing ones. The new report-

ers are Alma Padilla, Alma Atondo, Andrea Jimenez, Michael Sutton, Nick Bradford, Robert Haynes and Martin Padilla.

Junior Stephanie Soto is now acting Editor-in-Chief, with Laryn Schemmer being promoted to Managing Editor where she will

be in charge of advertising and circulation as well as performing Editorial duties to back up Soto. Kaden Baartman returns as Compositor

and Stinger Web Editor, as do Senior Reporters Clairanda Porter, Teresa Rangel, Janelle Hawk, Blanca Barcenas and Logan Hightower.

Lisa Baxter also returns after taking a semester off from the Stinger Staff. Below you will find bios and pictures of the new Stinger Re-

porters, taken from the Web Stinger webisite (khsstinger.com).

The Stinger Photography staff saw the addition of two Interns, who will serve the rest of the semester as Photo Staff Trainees.

They will be assigned photographic duties related to photographing and publishing their photos and will be evaluated by Dr. Johnson and

the other Senior Staff members for their abilities, attitude and leadership qualities at the end of the year. If they are approved, they will

join the Photography staff next year as full members.

Later in the semester, senior Sean Borelli will hand over the reigns of the Chief Photographer to his successor .

Martin enjoys listening to music and

watching movies or reading a book when

he can. His favorite movie franchise is

Star Wars, his favorite book is Looking

For Alaska, and his favorite TV show is

the Office. He loves animals and sucks at

math.

Alma is a senior and a very outgoing

muchacha. She loves soccer and plays for

KHS's soccer team.

There is not a day that goes by when she isn't

being her funny self.

Just your friendly neighborhood gamer that

everyone looks at and thinks is weird, because

he watches anime and several other things. Mi-

chael is the brother of Scott Sutton (who is

known to some as a slacker) and isn’t far off

from following in his exact footsteps. So, don’t

expect many stories out of this guy.

I’m a junior at Kingfisher High School. I run

the whole high school. I have had 6 ex-

girlfriends. I like movies and I’m the King of

Wal-Mart. I hate the school food. I’m a big

Star Wars fan and I’m like Ron Swanson and

Andy Dwyer from Parks and Recreation.

I like movies that are so bad they're good,

video games, all things Japanese, and comedy.

Andrea is a member of the Spanish Club and

National Honor Society. She is a pretty bad

driver and works at the local Mickey D's.

Her favorite sports are sleeping and eating.

She also loves to hang out with her friends.

Senior Profile: Ramiro Zapata By: Teresa Rangel/ss

Hysteria struck Earth in the center of Oklahoma at Oklahoma City on November 28, 1997. Ramiro Zapata was delivered and

brought forth to his parents, Michele and Tabi Taku, alongside elder siblings Marissa Johnson (26) and Razor (22).

Ramiro is the baby out of the trio of siblings and owns two dogs

named Daisy and Vi.

Ramiro, alias “Bic”, is an enthusiast of taking naps and

hopes to one day aspire to major at UCO in “IDK my major?”

His favorite subject is the sleeping one and his favorite teacher at

KHS is Coach Nall. He is currently active in STUCO and foot-

ball.

“Where do you see yourself in the future?” I, the interviewer,

asked “I see myself playing Call of Duty on my Xbox.”

His all time favorite movie is Finding Nemo by Disney Pixar. To

Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is one of his all time favorite

classic books.

His hobbies include playing on his Xbox, sleeping, and

breathing. He loves shopping at TJ Max and Wal-Mart.

If you’re lucky enough, you might catch this senior jamming, in

his gray Chrysler 200 2012, out to his favorite radio station 101.9

FM the Twister, since his favorite music genre is country. His

favorite song is If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away by Justin Moore.

His favorite TV shows are Friends and The Walking Dead. By

far his favorite holiday is “My birthday.” Penguins are his favor-

ite animal. His current role in society is being awesome. His fa-

vorite food is ramen noodles and Kit Kats are his favorite candy.

His favorite color is blue.

“Having earrings in middle school.” Ramiro recounts,

with a sigh, was his most embarrassing moment in life. A random

fact about Ramiro is that he has a Hitch Hikers thumbs. “Bring

your chargers to class.” Is the wisdom he shared for the under-

classmen.

He will miss with great heartache: the people, the school, and

being in high school. “Nice knowing you guys.” he says with

emotional tears streaming down his face. “Adios.”

A Doomed Genre By: Robert Haynes/kk

Have you ever heard of the “Grandfather of

the first person shooter genre?” Well let’s go back to

the beginning of the 90’s when most video games

were on the NES, SuperNES, Sega Genesis, etc. Back

in those days pc gaming wasn’t really a thing yet.

Of course people played games on the pc

ever since computers just had text on the screen. Yes,

even then computers had games on them but they were just text adventures. Now I

know what you’re thinking, “quit stalling!” “Get to the point already !”

Well the first person shooter genre started out with a little game called

Wolfenstein 3d back in 1991. A little company called Id software made this gem of

a game, which involved, what else, shooting. Comical today of course that a game

where pixels fire at one another, but the story of this gaming genre doesn’t start

with Wolfenstein. Oh no it starts with the spiritual successor to Wolfenstein 3d,

Doom!

What is Doom you may ask? Well, it was released in 1993 and is the spir-

itual successor to Wolfenstein. Why is this more important you may ask? Doom

became so popular at the time that everyone was playing it. So many people were

playing Doom that computer companies banned workers from playing the online

version, since the companies servers wouldn’t bog down under the load.

Yes you heard me, a game in 1993 had multiplayer capability over LAN

(local area network) which is like playing games online within the connection radi-

us to the open internet.

Doom is basically a game where you play as a space marine on the moon

of Phobos fighting off dimensional demons. Sounds epic right. Back in the day peo-

ple got stories from games from reading the game manuals.

El Chapo

Re-Re-captured By: Alma Padilla/kk

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto an-

nounced on Twitter last Friday that fugitive

drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has been

recaptured seven months after he escaped from a

maximum security prison.

Pena Nieto tweeted: "mission accomplished:

we have him." He said in a follow-up tweet that captur-

ing the leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel is an

“important achievement for the rule of law in Mexico."

An official who spoke on condition of ano-

nymity told the associated press that Guzman was

apprehended after a shoot-out with the Mexican ma-

rines in the city of Los Mochis, in Guzman's home

state of Sinaloa.

Five people were killed and one Mexican

marine wounded in the firefight. Guzman had previ-

ously escaped from prison in 2001, and was only re-

captured in 2014. His second escape was humiliating

to Nieto's administration, demonstrating to the world

how corruption, fear and influence helped El Chapo

escape justice.

El Chapo escaped using a tunnel that his

workers make for him. He has many tunnels.

LA Galaxy Makes

Big Changes By: Logan Hightower/ss

October 2014,

after the Major Soccer

League shut down

some operations, Los

Angeles Galaxy an-

nounced that they are

changing: the name of the team to the Kits.

Also changing will be their jerseys, the Stadi-

um, and Emblem.

They are also changing their name to

the more European, “Los Angeles Football

Club.” Los Angles FC will be participating in

the season of 2018.

Los Angeles FC is going to be play-

ing in the MLS (Major League Soccer) as they

were before, but with the new club name and

items. Then it will make a new season for the

whole club. Henry Nguyen, the main owner

out of a group of owners, announced that this

will be the official name of the club.

The new stadium is going to cost a

whopping $250 million dollars, and will hold

25,000 people in it. They don’t have a date or

place to begin building yet, but they do know

that it will be one of the largest stadiums in

North America.

They will be changing their home kit

colors will be white with black stripes. Their

away jerseys will be black with white stripes.

The Kits are supposed to look very slick, as

they play on the field.

The Hateful Eight :

Movie Review By: Martin Padilla/kk

After years and years of releasing some of

the most critically acclaimed films, Quentin Tar-

antino releases his new film “The Hateful Eight”.

Although it is not his best work, it is quite the tri-

umph and an amazing western film. With a three

hour run time, a $44 million dollar budget, and a

great cast, this film will leave you speechless.

Quentin Tarantino’s films have always

been amazing to me in the sense of storytelling. His

passion for filmmaking has always amazed me. He

could’ve shortened The Hateful Eight to two hours

at the least, but he didn’t. He makes his movies as

long as he wants because he does what he knows

will make his movies great.

Gore is also a big stylish trademark device

he uses. A trademark device that is also heavily

used in The Hateful Eight, so if you don’t like

blood and gore this movie is not for you.

As far as the actual movie goes, it is a

good story, even though the beginning starts off a

little slow but for a good reason. Setting up the

story, introducing characters, giving us the location

and hiding clues everywhere is the job of the first

half. About halfway through the film it picks up the

pace a little with gory scenes, foul language, and

some great special effects.

So in conclusion I give this film an 8.0.

Not a perfect score but I still highly recommend

this film.

Deadpool :

Red Band

Movie Trailer

Review Opinion By: Nick Brad-

ford/kk

If you don’t know the

“Merc with the Mouth” you will

soon be introduced to him in the

red band trailer of the upcoming

Marvel superhero movie called

Deadpool.

The movie trailer starts with

Deadpool in a taxi talking to the

taxi driver talking about why he

has a red suit on. Then we see a

couple of cut scenes spelling out

the plot of the movie.

Then Deadpool says to the

audience, “you thought this was

a superhero but that guy in the

read suit just turned the other

guy in a f-bomb couba.” Re-

member, this is the Red Band

trailer, so there is a lot of profan-

ity used.

He continues to address the

audience, demonstrating how

tight his spandex suit is, how the

story tells the tale before he be-

came a smart talking mercenary,

his bout with cancer and the

operation he underwent to beat

the disease.

We see shots of Deadpool

undergoing the Weapon X pro-

gram and the results of him be-

coming an indestructible being.

This movie will be funny and

full of action when it comes out

on Feb 12, 2016.

January 12, 20167

The Kingfisher Board of Education met in regular ses-

sion at 7PM on Monday, January 4, 2016 in the Board of Educa-

tion building with all members present. President Mike Copeland

gaveled the meeting to order and called o Superintendent of

Schools Jason Sternberger to announce “honors and recogni-

tions.”

Mr. Sternbeger said the district has been certified as a

“Health School” and that many of the district’s students had qual-

ified for the All-Area Band. He also announced that Mrs. Misty

Blundell has been chosen by the faculty as “Teacher of the Year”

and that, with no opposition, Mr. Copeland has been reelected to

another term on the Board.

After routine approval of the previous Board’s Minutes,

they discussed the routine general business involving financial

funds. Mr. Sternberger reported that, because of current budget

reductions, the district is only slightly behind where it was this

time last year. He noted there is still need for expenditures men-

tioning the replacement of two computers each at the high school

and Heritage School. He pointed out that there are payments due

on borrowed money that has already been budgeted so no sur-

prise there.

Mr. Sternberger announced 24 teachers have received

grants from the Educational Foundation totaling more than

$20,000 to be used for classroom enrichment that cannot be fund-

ed by the district. He also mentioned a slight decrease in the

“Mid-term Adjustment” received from the state to account to the

addition of students. Mr. Sternberger said his real concern is the

continued eroding of support from the state. “If we had main-

tained the level from 2008, we’d have over $600,000 more to

spend than we do today.”

As a result of the decreased support, Supt. Sternberger

said the district will likely have to dip into the current car-

ryover funds to the tune of about $200,000. He said his concern

is not for the 2016-17 school year but for the 2017-2018 school

year funding when the district may be forced to reduce staff

which no one wants. Mr. Sternberger did note the district receives

up to 30% of its funding through state aid and so any cutbacks

are serious.

Mr. Sternberger also reported work is continuing on the

MPB but will probably take until the end of the school year to be

completely finished. He presented the annual dropout report and

college remediation report based on the class of 2013. According

to the report, about 10% of the students who went to college re-

quired some remediation in at least one subject. According to the

Oklahoma State Department of Education, the average remedia-

tion rate was around 40%.

The Board accepted the resignation of Tech Ed. Teacher

Mariah Sinclair who will be leaving soon to accept a job with the

National Radio Observation in West Virginia where she will be

working in teacher outreach. Mr. Sternberger praised Mrs. Sin-

clair for her work here and said this was simply an opportunity

she could not afford to tern down.

The Board hired Carol Liles to teach first grade and

agreed to pay a back-due fee to the Department of Human Ser-

vices for assessment services. The also agreed to allow the

“Kingfisher Trails” organization access to district proper for fur-

ther expansion of the “Trails.”

After a 30 minute executive session to consider the Su-

perintendent’s contract, the Board returned to unanimously vote

to reemploy Mr. Sternberger for two more years.

The Board adjourned at 8:20PM.

Anatomy of a Wreck

By: Alma Atondo/kk

During the afternoon of January 5, 2016, Denise

Padilla and I got into a wreck. Hopefully you’ll be able to

avoid getting into a wreck, but maybe my story will act as

a warning that it can happen so fast.

Denise and I were going to her house to get mon-

ey. It was during lunch time.We were driving towards her

house out by the College Hill development of Kingfisher.

We were also going to her house to pick up her brother.

Her brother was going to let her borrow some money for

her new truck that she had bought like a week before. Den-

ise needed like at least twenty dollars.

We backed up to get back in to the drive way and

we drove past a curve. We were talking about how pretty

her stereo was and how I liked her steering wheel. Her

brother said that if I liked it so much I would probably end

up “stealing it.” He was joking of course.

As soon as we rounded the curve, I looked up and

was shocked to see in front of me, the rapidly approaching

gap of death between the wheels and the bottom of the

semi truck. Next, thing I knew we had hit the rear wheel of

the truck and had a major wreck.

I felt like we had spun around and my head was

still spinning. When I opened my eyes, Denise was out the

truck and her brother was trying to get me out the truck. I

couldn’t get out. I needed to find my glasses first so I could see. I was sitting in the middle seat, and turns out my leg had a huge bruise on

it from the spinning.

Eventually, some lady drove by and called the cops. They arrived 30 minutes later and took down all the information of the acci-

dent. Be warned students of Kingfisher High School. It can be pretty dangerous on the roads around our little town.

Three Rivers Basketball

Tournament

By: Michael Sutton/kk

Were you wondering why there was a basketball tourna-

ment occurring in our APB last week, yet none of our teams

were playing in it?

Welcome to The Three Rivers Basketball Tournament

which was not previously held in Kingfisher until 2 years ago.

At that time, Cashion and other small schools accepted the

fact that they their gyms and facilities were simply too small

to be able to host a tournament the size and scope of the Three

Rivers competition. King-

fisher was also more cen-

trally located between all of

the small schools who were

competing in the tourna-

ment.

Cashion HS then called

and asked if Kingfisher

could host the games. Previ-

ously it was tossed around

from the schools competing in it. The tournament ran from

January 7th through the 9th in the Kingfisher APB (All Pur-

pose Building). The competing teams were, OBA, Okeene,

Cashion, Crescent, Thomas, Watonga, and Hennessey.

The final games were played at 7pm on the 9th of Janu-

ary. In the finals for the girls it was Cashion vs. Okarche with

Cashion coming through as the victor and bringing home the

championship for the girls.

On Saturday at 8:30 pm the final game of the tournament

was the finals for the boys, between Hennessey and Okarche.

As the game came to a close Okarche had won and would

eventually take home the championship on the boys side.

The Conjuring Sequel Coming

Soon

By: Andrea Jimenez/kk

In 2013, The

Conjuring was re-

leased worldwide. It

was considered one of

the scariest movies of

that year.

The film was

based on a true story

and made about $318

million dollars

throughout the world.

It was directed by

James Wan and fea-

tured actors Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, who played real life para-

normal investigators/authors. It was the Wilson’s reporting that inspired

The Amityville Horror story. In the movie, the couple come to the aid of

the Perron Family (played by Ron Livingston and Lily Taylor), who have

seen the paranormal activity in their farmhouse increase.

Now, after three years, the sequel to the box office hit is ex-

pected to hit theaters on June 10, 2016.

The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist is based on another

true story as documented by Ed and Lorraine Warren. The ghost hunters

will face new fears but this time in London. The film is dealing with case

of the Enfield Poltergeist which took place in the London Borough of

Enfield from 1977 to 1979.

Director James Wan and actors Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmi-

ga return for the sequel. It was widely reported that inexplicable eerie

events took place during production of the first film, therefore a priest

from the Roman Catholic Church was brought in to bless the set of the

sequel by the film's producers.

December 7, 2015

The Kingfisher Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, December 7, 2015 at 7PM with Board member Dana

Golbek absent. President Mike Copeland called the meeting to order and recognized Superintendent of Schools Jason Sternberger

for “Honors and Recognitions.”

Supt. Sternberger introduced three of the four district site teachers of the year (Becky Hart, Misty Blundell and TJ Harris) noting

that Mrs. Schaefer was in her final Master’s class and could not be present. Building principals spoke about the teacher from their

school explaining their qualifications and contribution which led to this honor. Mr. Sternberger noted the District Teacher of the

Year will be announced in January.

After congratulating the teachers, the Board approved previous minutes and heard a discussion over district finances. Supt.

Sternberger said all funds are in good condition but the district is behind last year’s budget by about $200,000 due entirely to reduc-

tions from state aid. He also mentioned that getting a better deal on buses purchased through the recent transportation bond issue

plus the sale of old buses permitted the district to purchase a small activity bus that will hold 14 passengers and can be driven by

teachers who do not have the standard bus driver’s license. Altogether, the sale of old buses netted the district about $7500.

The Board discussed remaining funds from the QZAB loan. Mr. Sternberger said, depending on what remains in the special

contingency fund set aside for the heating and air condition of the Heritage gym and the work on the high school room, there could

be between $75,000 and $95,000 remaining. There are a number of projects for which this money can be used including supplies

and equipment for the band and other refurbishment projects at the schools.

The Board approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Cheyenne and Arapaho Department of Education that will pro-

vide tutoring, mentoring and parent/student advocacy. Mr. Sternberger said he and the building principals have been impressed with

the new leadership at this agency and the district is looking forward to cooperation.

The Board will consider a proposal from the Kingfisher Trails to extend walkways north from Toronto across school property

and they approved a DVD sale fund raiser for the Heritage School music program.

The Board approved additions and modifications to the Board Policy Book to comply with state law noting that one new law

requires that a district counselor serve on the Professional Growth and Development committee.

Mr. Sternberger reported dirt work is being done to prepare for the construction of a bus “garage” at the round top building lo-

cated north of the middle school. This covered building is required as the 6 new buses are too tall for the current garage. In a side

note, Mr. Sternberger noted on how quiet the new buses are compared to the ones they replace. He also told the Board that the dis-

trict may have to consider an alternate date for spring break in the 2016-2016 school year as the Youth Expo has been scheduled for

March 8 of 2017. He commented that so many of our students are involved in that event, it would benefit the district to have a break

at that time.

Regarding the upcoming Board Member election in February, as of the Board meeting, only current member Mike Copeland has

filed. The Board accepted the resignation of Mrs. Collier as a first grade teacher and Ms. Lombardo as a high school teacher’s aide.

The Board adjourned shortly before 8PM.
