At the age of 14, Todd Huston got his legscaught in a boat propeller, then battled throughseveral surgeries in an effort to keep his legs, butbone disease eventually forced the amputation ofone leg.

Huston eventually became a psychotherapistand clinical director of the Amputee ResourceCenter in California and also worked in psychiat-ric hospitals for adults, adolescents and children.

Huston completed a world record-setting Sum-mit America expedition by climbing to the high-est elevations of all 50 states in only 66 days 22hours and 47 minutes, shattering the originalrecord by 35 days.

He has earned several distinguished honorsand has been featured in thousands of publica-tions throughout the world.

shows that our earliest expe-riences matter to our health,learning and well-being intoadulthood and that the qual-ity of relationships with par-ents and other importantcaregivers in the earliest yearscan establish a strong or aweak foundation. Holy Trinity CatholicSchool celebrated NationalCatholic Schools Week as partof the 40th anniversary of thenationwide celebration ofCatholic education during theweek of Jan. 26 to Feb. 1.

This year’s theme was“Catholic Schools: Communi-ties of Faith, Knowledge andService,” which highlights theschools’ focus on faith devel-opment, academic excellenceand dedication to communityservice.

On Sunday, Jan. 26, stu-dents and their families wereencouraged to attend the 10:30a.m. Mass at Holy Trinity as afamily. Following Mass theschool hosted the second An-nual Invitational ArcheryShootout.

On Monday, the parents ofall students were invited to aspecial breakfast in honor oftheir support of Catholic edu-cation. On Tuesday, the sev-enth and eighth grade stu-dents switched places with theteachers and became “Teach-ers for the Day” throughoutthe school.

During the afternoon on

Thursday students partici-pated in Catholic Trivia andRun, Jump, and Think activi-ties. Throughout the week,students engaged in two ser-vice projects. The “Change forHoly Innocence PrayerChapel” project was aweeklong event that encour-aged students and their fami-lies to donate money to fundefforts to sustain the perpetualadoration chapel and coun-seling offices that servewomen in need to aim to endabortion through prayer. The“Blankets for Birth Choice”service project found theschool community gatheredtogether on Friday afternoonto make tied fleece baby blan-kets that will be donated toBirth Choice. Fleece was do-nated by school and parishcommunity members.

National Catholic SchoolsWeek is a joint project of theNational Catholic EducationalAssociation and the UnitedStates Conference of CatholicBishops. Holy Trinity Catho-lic School serves students 3years old through the eighthgrade.

In an effort to familiarize cur-rent and potential grape growerswith vital information of what ittakes to be a successful grape pro-ducer, Oklahoma State Universitywill be offering a grape manage-ment course, said Becky Carroll,OSU Cooperative Extension assis-tant specialist, fruit crops and pe-cans.

The 2014 Oklahoma Grape Man-agement course will meet oneThursday per month beginning Feb.27 and continue through Sept. 11.Classes will take place at theCimarron Valley Research Stationnear Perkins and each class willmeet from 1 to 5 p.m. The class doesnot meet in March.

Registration is $250 per personand the course is limited to 70 par-ticipants. Preregistration is requiredand is due by Feb. 14. “The interest in growing grapesin Oklahoma has risen steadily overthe last several years, and we seethis trend continuing,” Carroll said.“We’ve offered the grape coursesince 2001, with more than 700people going through it, and it con-tinues to be successful,” Carroll said.“Participants really get a greatamount of information that is ben-eficial to a current business or apotential business endeavor.”

The course is designed to coverall aspects of the grape growingindustry and is geared toward thosewho have established their vine-yard, as well as those who are still inthe planning stage or those whosimply want more information.

“This course definitely hassomething for everyone, from thosewho have been growing grapes fora while, to those who are just get-ting started,” she said.

The course is designed so thatparticipants will experience both theclassroom learning environment inaddition to hands-on experiencesduring each class. The hands-on les-sons will take place in the demon-stration vineyard at the CimarronValley Research Station.

Carroll said each class will covera variety of topics such as vineyardestablishment, pruning and train-ing, site selection, soils/water, in-sect and disease management, weedcontrol, economics, fertilization,propagation, rootstocks, canopymanagement, harvest preparationand petiole sampling.

“We’ll also be covering impor-tant topics such as budgeting, risksand the commitment required toestablish a prosperous business,”she said.

Each meeting correlates timewise with what is actually happen-ing in grape production. For ex-ample, the first meeting will en-compass information about the dor-mant vine stage, which is what hap-pens in February.

There are a number of industryprofessionals, as well as OSU ex-perts, who will be on hand duringeach of the classes to share theirexpertise and research-based infor-mation.

Because of the growth in thegrape industry in Oklahoma,Carroll said OSU researchers be-lieve the industry will continue tohave a significant impact on thestate’s economy, as well as providethose who are interested with an-other agricultural outlet.
