King’s College Chapel In 1859, the College Council approved a proposal by the College Chaplain that the original 1829 chapel should be reconstruct-ed, agreeing that its ‘meagreness and poverty’ made it unworthy of King’s. Gilbert Scott was asked to make proposals. His scheme was accepted and the reconstruction was completed in 1864 at a cost of just over £7,000. Today the Chapel remains at the heart of the College and continues to provide a crucial spiritual focus for the King’s community with regular services and as a quiet space at the heart of the college. It is known and loved by generations of staff and students of King’s.

The Chapel choir King’s London has a great Choral Tradition; in 1843 it was noted that “certain gentlemen connected with King’s had...been effi-ciently supplying the choir.” The choir is now a 30 strong scholarship choir directed by Joe Fort. They sing each week in Chapel at our services as well as singing concerts and other special events. They also sing on tour and on the radio each year.

Choral Evensong Choral Evensong takes place every Tuesday at 17.30. This service is principally sung by the Choir. They sing an Introit at the doors of Chapel, the Psalm, Canticles and an Anthem. The service also includes a hymn which all are invite to sing, two scrip-ture readings, one each from the Old & New Testaments, and a brief homily and prayers. It offers an opportunity for the con-gregation to participate by silently associating themselves with the words that the Choir offer on behalf of all of us. Many peo-ple find that this provides a space in which to be still; to allow those thoughts and feelings, which are otherwise suppressed by a busy life, to come closer to us than life outside allows; and to catch a vision of God's glory in the beauty of holiness.

The College Eucharist Every Wednesday during term we have a sung Church of England Eucharist, or Holy Communion service. The music will be sung by the Chapel Choir. We also have a sermon given by a member of the Chaplaincy team or a guest preacher.
