Inside the Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Brigade

By Steve Johnson February 2015

Introduction I am a retired Kings Mountain Volunteer firefighter. I’m writing a series of articles to de-mystify what the Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Brigade and Fire Department are, and what they do for the community. Over the next several months I’ll talk about the history, organization and duties of the Fire Brigade and Fire Department, other (County and State) emergency response agencies and how they all fit together. I’ll also talk about common misconceptions about the fire department. I’ll also include a safety tip in each article. This month’s article is about the Fire Brigade. Fire Brigade Overview The Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Brigade was founded in 1962. The purpose of the Brigade was to provide local emergency response since County fire stations were many miles away. The Fire Brigade is a 501 (c) 3 Non-Profit Corporation, which means all contributions are tax-deductible. It owns and maintains the community center/fire station and five surrounding acres. The community center is available for use by any Brigade member and is used frequently for meetings, classes and other events. The Brigade also owns two fire engines, one rescue truck and a utility vehicle used for emergency response. The Fire Department is a sub-organization of the Fire Brigade. The Fire Brigade has a board with seven directors elected by Fire Brigade members. Any individual or family who pays annual dues is considered a member of the Brigade. Directors serve for three year terms, and can be re-elected for one additional term. Officers consist of a president, vice president, treasurer and secretary. The Fire Brigade is funded primarily from proceeds from the annual Kings Mountain Art Fair. Additional funding comes from dues and community donations. One important aspect of the Fire Brigade is that our deed requires us to maintain an active volunteer fire department. If the volunteer fire department goes away, the land will revert to the previous owners or their successors, currently the Federal Government/Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Next Month: Inside the Fire Department Safety Tip for February: Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas that can be fatal. Common sources are improperly-vented furnaces and fireplaces. Every home should have a working CO detector on every floor of the house. If the CO alarm goes off, IMMEDIATELY get everyone (including pets) out of the house and call 911. The Fire Department has gas detectors and other safety equipment to evaluate the threat and ventilate the house. We would rather go out on a false alarm than have to deal with even one fatality. Please direct any questions or comments to me at [email protected]

NEWS & INFOby Sam Penman

The Kings Mountain Association Overview.

The board is gearing up to organize many of our traditional events, in addition to some new ones. Ideas and volunteers are embraced, so rather than just attend why not consider spear heading an occasion or just participating more actively? The more the merrier. As always, the KMA is here to not only host informative discussions of interest or fun filled events, but represent our community on matters of concern. Please feel free to reach out to us with suggestions or issues you may be experiencing at [email protected]. Our monthly meetings are held at the Community Center on the third Thursday of each month starting at 7pm.

Recent Events:The Compost Workshop held at the Community Center on February 21st, was co-hosted by the Garden Club and Kings Mountain Association and presented by Tracie Troxler. (Anton – an summary and pics to follow from Ingrid for you to cut and paste here. I spoke with her this morning and due to illnes – she may not be able to get it to you until tomorrow).

Upcoming Events:Spring is in the air and so to, the impending annual Spring Brunch. This always proves to be such a popular, fun event for kids, families and individual community members alike. Everyone is welcome, so mark your calendars and consider inviting non-resident friends or family to join in

the festivities. I have had nothing but positive feedback from those friends of mine who attended, and its a wonderful setting to share. Please see attached flier for details.

Save the Date:The Kings Mountain Annual Dinner - Saturday, May 2nd.Summer BBQ and KM Automobile Show - Saturday, July 11th.

With the warmer weather upon us, nature is blooming, buzzing and chirping. The change of

Page 11: Kings MountainECHO · The Kings Mountain Echo is published monthly by the Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Brigade. The Echo address is 13887 Sky-line Blvd., Woodside, CA 94062. Editor:

season reminds me of yet another reason why we love living on the mountain. I would like to propose a “Get to Know Your Neighbor” blurb to include in our monthly ECHO contribution. The content could be in the form of a heartfelt summary of why you chose to live here, and what you appreciate about our beautiful surrounds and unique community. Alternatively, I would love to interview some of our residents/members to get to know them better and build personal connections. Contributions can be anonymous if you choose. Kindly contact me directly at [email protected] or 650 851 1823. Let’s kick things off with an introduction from my family:

“My husband and I (both Australian) moved to the mountain 4-5 years ago with our two boys. Coming from a smaller, suburban home in Marin, we love the open space, flora and fauna that living here affords us. At first I was a little hesitant about the somewhat isolated environment, however, that’s also part of the community’s appeal. I’ve even grown to enjoy traveling up and down Kings Mountain Rd every weekday – I brace myself for the day on the way down and can leave it all behind coming home. On the weekends we tend to be hermit like and revel in our mountain retreat. We love being outdoors and the mountain has so much to offer in that respect. As a result, we haven’t felt the need to go camping or travel too far to experience what we can in our own back yard.

For us, the local spirit and camaraderie is an integral part of the appeal of the area. We felt welcomed and embraced even as newcomers, and have come to call many of you friends – thank you. Separately, I understand and respect those of you who are more private, and prefer not to attend or participate in the many gatherings on offer.

With the local groups, public forums, and online groups, there is something for everyone. Reading some of the discussions proves quite entertaining at times, and is further evidence of the diverse community that reflects the world we live in. I feel honored and proud to bring up our sons here, knowing that they are exposed to a plethora of personalities, a lifestyle, and likeminded values that too many miss out on.I trust they will always have fond memories of their childhood, regardless of where they end up in their lives.

In appreciation with warm regards,Sam and the Penman clan.”
