Year 7 Art Scholarship Programme

The Year 7 Art Gifted, Talented and Scholarship selection process will be taking place after half-term. All Year 7 students will be sitting a practical and written Art exam during their Art lessons over the next few weeks. Any student who believes they might be at, or near the expected standard, are invited to bring in a portfolio of artwork. The portfolio might consist of drawings, paintings, photography, textiles and 3D work (photos only). A maximum of twenty pieces of work can be submitted and the work should have been produced in the past two years.

If a student wishes to apply for a Photography Scholarship, then we would expect to see a portfolio of at least 20 images, presented with annotation to explain how they shot the images and what the ideas behind the images were.

Your child should give their clearly named portfolio to their Art teacher during the first week back after half term at the latest.

For more information, please watch this video, which will explain the process in more depth and show you some examples of what we are looking for: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84o_W6laViU

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM! Year 7, Year 8 And Year 9

Creative Writing Competition

Objects and artefacts hold so many secrets. They are unique and can transport us back in time,

or even into the future.

Write a short story inspired by an object from a museum.

You can visit a museum yourself and choose an object that speaks to you. You can visit the British Museum website and explore objects there, or you can use one of the image prompts provided.

Rules The short story word limit is 1,000 words. Please do not exceed this. Students should email their story to [email protected] by Friday 26th November 2021. All submissions must be clearly labelled with the student’s name and form.

Prizes The winning story from each year group will receive an Amazon voucher for £20. The winning story overall will be made into a film by the Kingsdale Film Club. Good luck!

Student Recommendation Elina Abyat in Year 7, this week recommends the classic: Watership Down by Richard Adams Published more than 50 years ago, it’s one of the most famous stories about animals ever written.

It tells the story of Fiver, a young rabbit, who senses something terrible is about to happen to the warren he lives in. His brother Hazel knows that his sixth sense is never wrong. So, there is nothing else for it. They must leave immediately. And so begins a long and perilous journey of a small band of rabbits in search of a safe home. Fiver's vision finally leads them to Watership Down, but here they face their most difficult challenge of all.

Elina describes the book as touching and emotional. She found it interesting how the rabbits represented humans; they act in ways we might act. She particularly enjoyed the descriptions of the characters fleeing from danger. Recommended for students at all Key Stages.

Juanita Yebuah Year 7

Teacher Recommendation English and Drama teacher Ms Dunbar recommends: Ace of Spades by Faridah Abike-Ivimide A book described as Gossip Girl meets Get Out, with a shocking twist.

The book is set in Niveus Private Academy where money paves the hallways and the students are never less than perfect. Until now. Because anonymous texter, Aces, is revealing the darkest secrets of two students: talented musician and head girl Chiamaka. Someone is out to get them both. Someone who holds all the aces. And they're planning much more than a high-school game...

Ms Dunbar particularly enjoyed the characters in this book, which feel fleshed out and real. It’s fun and highly captivating, but also explores the important issue of institutionalised racism. Recommended for students aged 14 and above.

Kingsdale Foundation School

is A SAFE SPACE

At Kingsdale Foundation School we actively promote and listened to and, should something go wrong as at times it may, know where to go to for support or guidance and have a trusted person to talk to. Whilst the school has an impressive support network which includes an extensive pastoral team working with each year group, mentors, school counsellors, an art therapist, safeguarding team, links to outside support agencies and a staff cohort regularly trained in issues surrounding the mental well-being and safeguarding of young people, we appreciate that not everyone will always feel comfortable talking to a member of staff or may wish to speak to someone outside of school hours. For those members of our school community who feel they need support or advice or, wish to report an incident or concern we actively encourage you to contact us on one of our confidential emails where a qualified member of staff will be there to provide the support you require:

Remember at Kingsdale we

do NOT tolerate:

or Touching

We demand that all members of our school community
