Kingsbury Episcopi Countryside and Garden Club Have you heard about the Somerset Levels GREAT CRANE PROJECT? The Great Crane Project aims to restore healthy populations of wild

common cranes throughout the UK. Cranes are wonderful, iconic birds that are sadly missing from many of their former wetland haunts in the UK. They were lost as a breeding bird around 400 years ago as a result of hunting for food and the draining of their wetland nesting sites. Since 2010, the Great Crane Project has focused on the reintroduction of cranes into the

Somerset Levels and Moors. We’d like to invite you to an Open meeting of Kingsbury Garden and Countryside Club when we will be hosting a talk from a member of the Project on Monday 14th September 7.30 at St Martin’s Church Rooms, Kingsbury Episcopi, TA12 6 You will be very welcome to join us for tea and cake and a fascinating evening. Visitors £2.00, a donation will be made to the Project, so the more the merrier. For more details or a lift please phone Sue McGrouther 01460 241736. Children welcome.

Proposed Women’s Community Art Project Far Above Rubies: A Proposed Women’s Community

Art Project about Previous Women of the Parish

The Kingsbury Episcopi Area History Group, also now known as the ‘Kingsbury Time Travellers’ (KTT) , has collated an incredible archive of materials relating to the parish. Woven into the photographs, personal histories and historic documents is a story waiting to be told about the women of these two square miles, who by virtue of their skills, character, economic standing, fortitude and beliefs helped to create the unique community which exists today. As ancestors, these women of the past have currency today as a source of stories and case studies for the current generation of women, on what it means to be female in the modern world. As a member of the KHG and a descendent of some rather special Kingsbury Episcopi women, I am interested in developing a proposal to run a women’s community art project which links women from the past with women of the present around themes and individual histories. Each woman involved in the project would befriend a woman from the past, and using archive and personal materials would depict the befriended women, in some kind of creative format. This might be a painting, sculpture, tapestry or collage. Possible themes might be:

If there is enough interest in such a project, then we would aim to work with the South Somerset District Council Arts Development Officer to seek funding, and also explore the option of involving a resident artist and a national university. In the first instance I would like to hear from women who are either interested in taking part in such a project, or who have personal memorabilia relating to a female family member who could be befriended. Please contact me on: [email protected]

There will also be a meeting of the ’Time Travellers’ on Sat Nov 21st 10.30-12.30 in the Church Rooms when the proposed project will be discussed in more detail. If you have any family documents or photographs you would like to share then please bring them along to this meeting or post them on the KHG Facebook page.

St Martin’s Pet Service The turn out for this year’s pet

service in St Martin’s Church was probably the best yet. Whilst the pet congregation was mostly dogs, there were also rabbits and a ferret. Unfortunately the expected horse and snails did not turn up.

Denise Peacock led the service which featured hymns such as All things bright and beautiful and poems including T E Eliot’s Mr Mistoffelees. Most of the congregation were well behaved,

including the animals. One of the gun dogs made an escape bid, but it did resist eating the ferret and the rabbits! The service was followed by a barbecue.

NOT JUST ANY BANDSMAN!! Why has Kingsbury Episcopi Band lasted since the 1870’s? Well the answer is simple - because of its members! In particular ex-resident Mr Leslie Male. At the age of 12, Les and his younger sister were having piano lessons, but sadly Les didn’t progress as quickly as his sister. So he asked his father if he could play the clarinet. His father bought him a clarinet in 1939 for £5, which was two weeks’ wages. Bert Talbot was the leader of Kingsbury Episcopi Band in 1939 and provided Les with lessons on Sunday afternoons free of charge. In 1943 Bert Talbot asked Les to join the band. During the war time the band disbanded as many were drafted abroad, or called up for Home Guard or ARP. Les was a messenger for ARP in 1940. In 1944 Kingsbury Episcopi Band reformed and began practising again. V E Day was the band’s first engagement for many years and, for us, VE Day also marks the start of Les’s unswerving commitment to the band. From1945 to 1947 Les was called up for National Service, but returned as often as time allowed just to play with the band. Living in Kingsbury Episcopi up until 2006, Les has always been a key representative of the band within the Parish of Kingsbury Episcopi and surrounding villages. Les has served as a committee member and, later, for 25 years as treasurer for the band. His commitment has been an example to all members past and present. Les never misses a band practice or engagement and will even make sure his holiday destinations are within travelling distance of the band room and/or the venue of a band engagement so that he can attend. In the time Les has been in the band he has learnt three instruments; from clarinet, Les moved on to tenor saxophone, which he played for many years, and later the tuba, which he still plays today. This

selfless act has ensured the well-being of the band, while his dedication to succeed is an inspiration to us all. Band life has embraced Les and his family. For many years Gaye Male, Les’s wife, has been involved in helping the band with refreshments, luncheons, baking and fundraising. Gaye has not only supported Les but has also been an unsung hero to the band over the years. Kingsbury Episcopi Band is built from its traditions, values and service to the community. These don’t just appear; they are built by its members. No-one has had a bigger influence than Les, ensuring that the band represents itself and the parish with helpfulness, cheerfulness and pride while entertaining audiences within Somerset. With the encouragement of Les’s vision and acceptance of social change the band has evolved from a men-only environment to a family organisation embracing several generations in some cases. Les is constantly smiling, always willing to tell us of his experiences, first to stand up against wrong and the first to welcome new members. It’s a privilege to have him with us. This year marks Les’s 70th year in the band and I am delighted to share Les’s achievement with the parish of which he has always supported! Thank You Les, you’re the best!!
