The next few weeks will be a busy time in the village. The Calor village of the year judges will meet here on the 17
th July. There is stiff
competition from villages throughout England – see page 4 for details and page 3 for our own programme. One last all out effort is now what is required.
Our annual village produce show takes place on the 25
th July and the
details with entry form are published with this edition. We hope for a good number of entries which, I am sure, will be up to the usual high standards.
The Kingston Fair takes place at the Dolphin car park on the 1
st August
to be opened by our own King and Queen at 2 p.m. we hope for a splendid turnout so come and enjoy yourselves. Tickets for the Grand Draw will be sold from door to door during July (also on the day) and we ask you to give generously, the proceeds are towards the upkeep of the reading room.
The annual cricket match takes place on the 8
th and 9
th August by
the kind permission of Richard Sanderson on his field. We have also, this year, been challenged to a game v Modbury on the 15
th August
Sadly we have lost a member of the community with the death of “Jacky” Triggs our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
We also hear that Eileen Randle has been in hospital after a fall. We all hope that by the time this issue is out that you are home and well on the way to a good recovery, Eileen.

******************** Calor Village of the Year
Your village needs you – again
The Calor judges are coming again, from 11am –1pm on Friday July 17th. This time there will be three of them, not the same ones as last time, and also the national Calor competition organiser. At 1pm he will be presenting us with the winner’s plaque and cheque for being the ‘Best in the West’. The programme for the visit will be similar to last time, starting in the Reading Room at 11am and moving onto the Church where clubs and societies etc will be putting on displays. We will then take them on a brief and rather rapid, walk around the village ‘sights’, ie the Fire Station, playing field and allotments, before regrouping for questions and then the presentation. We need a good turn out at 11am for the presentations and then in the church where there will be free refreshments for all. If you missed it last time around you will have heard how amazing the displays were. Please come and support your village. There are only four other villages in the England finals. We can do it, with your support.

ENERGY SAVING TIPS
There are two key organisations that will help advise you on saving both energy and water. They have recommendations on products that are worth purchasing to help reduce your bills, and the Energy Savings Trust also has up to date information on grants available to help you save energy in your home
ENERGY SAVING TRUST Phone for specific advice on 0800 512012 www.energysavingtrust.org.uk
The phone number is the same as for DEVON WARM ZONES www.devonwarmzones.org.uk
WATERWISE www.waterwise.co.uk tel; 0207 344 1882 gives advice on reducing water bills. On its website it also has a number of products that help to reduce water usage.
If you are interested in finding out more information then the Kingston Parish Website www.kingstonparishcouncil.co.uk now has an energy saving tips tab which has a lot of useful information about products that we have investigated and have found to be useful.

******************** CRICKET MATCH
The annual cricket match this year will be held over a 2 day period on Saturday and Sunday 8
th & 9
th August. The
event will be on a Twenty20 format and over 2 days to enable play to take place even if we are rained off for one day.. Anyone interested in playing is asked to register with Geoff at the Dolphin Inn. Refreshments will be similar to last year with Geoff and Richard Sanderson donating some barrels of beer with plenty of soft drinks for the children so that this can truly be a family weekend. Nick Oatway will host a rolling barbecue after the match on both days. Last year we raised a creditable £200 for the Reading Room and we hope to at least match that sum on this occasion. The following Saturday Kingston has been challenged to a Twenty20 match by a group in Modbury, so a little village pride will be at stake against our local neighbour. All games will start at 2.00 p.m. in my field adjacent to Vicarage Farm so come on you budding cricketers get your names registered with Geoff. Richard Sanderson
IMPLEMENTING THE PARISH PLAN The slow down campaign posters, designed by Jennie Grace, have been taken down for a while, but they will reappear. Sometime over the summer KYPA members, supported by police officers, will be using a Speed Indicator Device in the village. There will NOT be any prosecutions arising from this exercise, but you could be stopped and given advice. Stay alert! We are not going to tell you when it will happen! The data the police collect will show if there is a real speeding problem in the village and be used to plan any future campaigns. The Local Lettings Plan is working . Two homes have already been allocated to local people and a short waiting list is developing. When houses become vacant they are allocated within days. You must already be on the Housing Register to have a chance. Copies are available from David Hansford, our Parish Clerk, Judy Alloway or from Follaton House. The Housing Register application forms have not changed for some years, so they do not give you the space to show that you are ‘local’. Look at the five eligibility criteria in the Plan, (available from any Parish Counsellor, David or the parish website) and write a covering letter explaining why you are eligible. Do not forget the Plan covers those who did live here and have moved away because they could not afford to stay. Please do not hesitate to contact Judy or any other Parish Counsellor for information and advice. We have been successful in getting a small grant from the Big Lottery, Awards for All, to fund the project ‘Kingston Walks’. Mike Torrens and John Wurr, our Footpath Warden, are designing leaflets on 6 walks in the parish and an orientation board to go somewhere between the Reading Room and the Dolphin. Walkers are recommended to park in the pub car park. This project is intended to stimulate tourism and therefore local related employment, through more use of the pub and the holiday lets. The Parish Plan energy saving team ie Thelma Rumsey and Andy Smith, have summarised the energy and water saving tips they have been putting in this Newsletter, onto the parish website. A paper copy will be available in the Tuesday morning market, with the Parish Plan Progress Report, also available on the website. Green sections on the report mean ‘completed’, yellow mean ‘underway’. There is plenty of green now. Judy Alloway for the Parish Plan Advisory Group
KINGSTON VILLAGE OPEN PRODUCE SHOW Saturday 25th July 2009
With this month’s newsletter is your entry form and schedule for the Produce Show. Don’t forget to complete your form and hand it in no later than the 22nd July. Forms can be handed in at the Tuesday Morning Market or direct to Joyce Masters at Home Farm Bungalow. Please read the schedule carefully to make sure that your entry complies with all the requirements: size, presentation etc. If your entry does not, it will be exhibited (subject to there being sufficient room) but, unfortunately, will not be eligible for judging. We look forward to receiving lots of entries particularly as we have lost two great supporters of the Produce Show in Chris Freeman and Don Lugger. See you at the Show. Anita 810838

******************** KINGSTON LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
Sat 30th May - A perfect day for a visit to Finch Foundry, Sticklepath! Members of the History Society travelled through some beautiful Devon countryside in glorious sunshine to reach the Foundry on the edge of Dartmoor. The Foundry is the last example of a water-powered forge in England. It was originally a serge mill producing quantities of red material used for British soldiers’ tunics. The building was leased by the Finch family of Tavistock in 1814 and converted into their “edge tool” works. The business made and sold a range of tools throughout the West Country in its heyday employing 25 men and boys. The workforce at that time produced 400 tools each day. The mill contained three water wheels driving an air fan to power up the forges, a 40 horse-powered wheel for operating the “trip” hammer and a wheel for grinding and finishing shop. According to one of our brilliant guides, the vibration from the trip hammer was such that all the glasses on the shelf in the nearby Inn ended up on the floor! We were also told that the Finch Foundry “case hardened” the edges of their tools so efficiently that it was not necessary to sharpen them so often. Thank you to Margaret Cocks for arranging such an interesting outing. Future dates for Diaries include: An exhibition in the Church on Fri. 17th July for the final of the Calor Gas Village of the Year. Sat. 18th July - Matt Grace's "Smuggling Day". Exhibition for the Kingston Fair on Sat. 1st August. A trip on Sat. 19th Sept to "Greenway" by car, ferry from Dartmouth (details in Aug Newsletter). Thurs. 22nd Oct - Annual General Meeting in R/Room. Thurs. 26th Nov - Talk in R/Room (to be arranged). Thurs. 10th Dec - Christmas Social Evening. If you would like any more information on our events above, about our Society or would like to become a member, please contact Jennie Stanley, 810819 or Joyce Masters, 810340.

Holidays
The root of words and sayings in our language are often lost in the mists of time. “Touch wood” is an idle and useless waste of words, a superstition that has no meaning today. It derived from corrupt so called holy men wandering around the land with splinters that they claimed were parts of “the true cross of Jesus”. It has been said that if all these so called relics were assembled in one place the cross made from them would have exceeded the size of the Eiffel Tower.
In a similar fashion we have forgotten that “Goodbye”, is an abbreviation of “God be with you” and that “Holiday” has a root in “HOLY DAY”. Back in the time when most of this land had no thought of travelling miles for a rest from work, the celebrations and great Christian festivals were times for genuine rejoicing. That holy aspect of rest and recreation is in our design by the God who made us and loves us wanting the best for us. We are commanded to have a Sabbath day of rest, and if we look at the roots of Christianity there were also longer periods set apart for prayer, worship and celebration. .It would be good for each one of us to use any space we might have for those purposes.
My own trip towards Christianity was hugely boosted by surfing late one evening, the waves were perfect. A small but good swell was running, with a light off-shore breeze holding up the wave face for excellent rides. The sun setting behind me, it was a north coast Devon location, made beautiful rainbow coloured lights in the spray from the top of the waves. It was almost as if someone nudged me and said “Who made it?
Once again this year to aid those who might enter our three Churches, we have put quiz sheets (with answers)at Bigbury, Kingston, and Ringmore, and visitors could include local folk who have rarely visited the neighbouring Parishes! The quizzes are partly about the buildings, but also about other interests that might help holiday/holy day reflection.
One special event this month is our special Bigbury Commemoration Service at 3.00 p.m. on Sunday the 12th. This is a special Service which has proved very helpful, especially for those who have suffered bereavement in the short or medium term. A time to remember those who have died, but also to support and encourage those left behind. We have sent written invitations to those folk who we know from the last few years funerals, and from headstones in the Churchyard. If we missed you we are sorry, but everyone is very welcome to come. There will be refreshments afterwards in the Memorial Hall at St Anne’s Chapel.
In closing to all our visitors enjoy your time in this beautiful area. To all our local residents do come and visit the Churches. On a Sunday would be great, but they are also open for you in daylight hours on all other days.
