Would you like to make lifestyle changes to improve your health? Even thesmallest change can make a difference!

These are programmes available in Kingston to help you towards a healthierway of living. Some programmes are free of charge and others havea discounted rate for patients referred via the NHS.

Get Active Exercise Referral scheme – a programme tohelp you become more active.

Walk4Life and Bike4Life – social programmes for thosewho enjoy walking or cycling at any level.

Parkrun – another social programme for walkers, joggersand runners.

Active Gardening – a social form of exercise forthose keen on gardening.

Weigh-2-Go and Rosemary Conley Diet& Fitness – programmes that will give youinformation and advice on eating healthilyand managing your weight.

Stop Smoking Service – supportprogrammes available throughoutKingston to help you quit.

Alcohol support – Down Your Drink– web-based programme for thoseworried about their alcohol intake.

Diabetes support – DESMOND –tailor-made programme for thosediagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.

Cardiac Rehabilitation – HealthyHearts – practical help and adviceon managing your cardiaccondition.

Get Active

Get Active is a structured 12-week exercise programme whichis fully supported by qualified exercise referral specialists.The programme includes activities such as:

• One to one sessions • Supervised gym workouts • Group exercise classes • Organized health walks • Outdoor exercise sessions • Women Only gym • Active gardening

The programme is offered in five leisure centres in Kingston:YMCA Surbiton, YMCA Hawker, Tolworth Recreation Centre,Malden Centre, and Kingfisher Leisure Centre.

Each session costs £3.60. Reduced rate gym membership isoffered to those who attend more than three times a week andwho complete the full 12 week course.

Adults (16 years and over) who currently have one or more ofthe following conditions can join the programme:

• Risk of heart disease (e.g. family history, smoking, overweight, obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure)

• Risk of osteoporosis (e.g. heavy drinker, early menopause) • Controlled asthma and COPD • Mild to moderate osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and

back pain • Anxiety, depression, stress and controlled mental health

conditions • Have a sedentary lifestyle (exercise less than 30 minutes

twice a week) and want to take the first steps to live a healthy lifestyle.

Walk4Life

NHS Kingston run a popular walking programme for anyonewanting to get active.

You don’t have to be super fit, and this is a fantastic way toimprove your health and make new friends along the way!Join one of our FREE walks around some of the mostbeautiful scenery that Kingston has to offer.

Parkrun

Parkrun is a free, weekly, 5km timed run, jog or walk open topeople of all abilities.

Whether you are interested in taking part as an establishedrunner, wannabe runner or simply to improve your health andfitness, then Parkrun is for you.

Active Gardening

Active Gardening is a FREE allotment programme available topeople aged 16 years and over in the community and is aneffective way to help people improve their physical and mentalhealth. Allotments provide a healthy outdoor activity, with thesatisfaction of taking exercise whilst planting and harvestinghealthy, low cost, fresh and locally grown food.

There are also additional benefits such as training and skillsbuilding, social interaction, making friends and being part of asupportive team. You will be taught how to prepare the ground,what to grow seasonally and how to maintain the crops throughthe expertise of members of the group.

The initial programme is for six weeks based on a buddy system,with an option to continue and become part of the allotmentteam thereafter. The programme is FREE but participants will berequired to make a small contribution towards peripherals suchas buying seeds for planting etc. Tools and equipment will beprovided.

Weigh-2-Go

The Weigh-2-Go programme is a FREE 10-week programme foradults 18 years and over wanting to lose weight and make lifestylechanges. It is delivered by trained professionals in selected GPsurgeries and pharmacies in either a group or one to one setting.

Each session involves a weigh-in, advice on various topics includinglabel reading, portion sizes and food choices when dining out andsupport with setting goals.

Weigh-2-Go is available to people who are overweight (BMI over25kg/m2). If you need to check your weight and BMI, your Nurse,GP or pharmacist will help you.

Rosemary Conley

Rosemary Conley classes combine dietary advice, help withchanging your lifestyle, personal goals and safe, effectiveexercise at every class.

NHS Kingston has teamed up with local Rosemary Conley Diet andFitness Clubs to provide all NHS referred patients with 12 weeks ofclasses at a reduced rate:

• Half price membership (normally £10) • Reduced cost classes (£4.50 per class for 12 consecutive weeks)

There is a choice of classes across the Borough taking place in localhalls, schools and community centres. Once referred, take yourcompleted referral form to the class of your choice.

Stop Smoking

You are up to four times more likely to quit smoking using NHSsupport rather than going it alone!

The NHS Stop Smoking service provides FREE friendly supportto help smokers quit

• FREE advice, information and support• Trained professional Stop Smoking advisors• Recommendations for Stop Smoking products including

Nicotine Replacement Therapy, Champix and Zyban • Weekly carbon monoxide testing

You can choose:• One to one support with a trained advisor in selected GP

surgeries or pharmacies• Group sessions with other people who are stopping smoking• Drop in clinic for a friendly chat and to begin a six week

programme

Down Your Drink –Alcohol Support Programme

Down Your Drink (DYD) Kingston is a FREE service forKingston residents who want help reducing the amount ofalcohol they drink.

The programme is run on a website packed full of usefulinformation, exercises and tools, designed to help you to takecontrol of your drinking. You can also opt to receive motivationalphone calls from a qualified health professional to help achieveyour goals.

The recommended age for using the Down Your Drinkprogramme is 16 years and over and participants will need accessto an internet connection. Register at www.dyd.kingston.nhs.uk touse the service.

DESMOND - Diabetes Support programme

Desmond is a FREE nationwide structured group educationprogramme developed by experienced health care professionalsin participation with people who have Type 2 diabetes.

The programme is for people aged 18 years and over who arenewly diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.

Participants will receive 6 hours of structured education in agroup setting of up to 10 participants with a family member orfriend. The programme is delivered by 2 accredited healthcareprofessionals who are fully trained and aim to support the personwith diabetes to become their own expert.

The course has been designed to meet NICE and Department ofHealth/ Diabetes UK quality standards and criteria for structurededucation.

Healthy Hearts - Cardiac Rehabilitation

If you've been diagnosed with coronary heart disease or anginathen you can join the FREE Healthy Hearts Programme whichoffers practical help and advice on managing your condition.

It includes:• Cardiac exercise classes• Information and discussion sessions• Relaxation training• Support in making lifestyle changes• One to one support with a team of cardiac specialists

Participants attend this flexible programme twice weekly for 6weeks at Tolworth Hospital. It is staffed by 2 Cardiac RehabilitationNurses and a Physiotherapist.

The Cardiac Rehabilitation team also run the Heart Manualprogramme which is a self-managed cardiac rehabilitationprogramme for those who are unable or do not wish to join thecentre-based course.
