Introduction

1 Introduction

The GestPoint system is a revolutionary device that allows the user to control a computer with simplegestures that navigate or initiate commands. Unlike touch screens, the user doesn't actually have totouch anything, allowing for higher security and protection of the computer and display monitor. GestPoint also works with screens of any size and at any distance from the user.

This system allows for an interactive computer program to be controlled with simple gestures by theuser. A typical installation would include an HTML-type interactive advertisement running on a largedisplay screen in a public area. The potential customer or audience may or may not be separated bya protective window, but can still interact with the captivating advertisement without having to touchanything. This interactivity will surely draw people to the display and encourage them to browse theproduct far longer than any static or even continuous loop display.

There are five configurations available with the GestPoint system, but there's virtually no limit to howand where it can be installed.

2

Introduction

The GestPoint Through Window configuration is typically installed in a store window, or in a kioskwindow. The computer and display screen is positioned safely behind the window, but the user, orpotential customer, can still interact by just pointing through the glass. The display monitor can be ofany size, and if it's right up against the store window, the GestPoint system effectively emulates atouch screen, while eliminating the potential for damage to the screen in a public space.

The HoloFrame configuration is a self-contained unit that looks and behaves similar to traditionaltouch screens and can be installed on a wide variety of screen sizes. The difference is that there's noneed for the expensive and easily damaged touch screen, and there are many more options availablefor controlling the computer.

3

Introduction

The HoloPoint (U-Frame) configuration can be installed in front of any display screen to control thecomputer with hand gestures. The user simply places a hand within the boundaries of the U-Frame tointeract with a computer screen of any size and at any distance from the U-Frame. It’s shape andsmaller size make it very portable, ideal for traveling exhibits and temporary installations.

The AirPoint configuration is a compact, portable unit that creates a tracking area in free space.Pre-configured for plug and play usability, it can be used at any distance from the display and canhandle any lighting conditions. The AirPoint system is ideal for quick and easy set up.

Page 8: Kiosk Hardware Installation ManualImmersive Therapy Suite ...gesturetek.com/oldhome/support/gestpoint/pdfs/GestPoint_User_Guide.pdfTo add Daily Reboot to Windows Startup ... answer

4

Introduction

The Overhead Tracking Frame configuration is a 6’ long bar designed with cameras at each endand infrared emitters (to allow for use in low-lit public environments). This bar is mounted above thearea where a user would stand and creates a tracking zone that is about an arm’s length in anydirection. Display screens can be positioned at any distance. This solution allows for the user tointeract with the content on the screen, without any of the technology in evidence.

The GestPoint system is designed to bring interactivity to your advertisements. When the user placestheir hand within the tracking region, they can interact with the computer. But what about thepasser-by who doesn't realize that there's this great product in front of them, or the person thatdoesn't understand at first glance how to use their hand gestures to control the computer? Theanswer is that most of the GestPoint configurations include a motion sensor that can launch aprogram when someone approaches the system, even if they don't place their hand into the trackingregion.

Introduction

1.3 GestPoint System Resolution

The resolution of the GestPoint system depends on the resolution of the camera, the length of thelens and the distance from the camera to the tracking region.

The cameras have a resolution of 640(h) x 480(v). The vertical resolution determines the minimumthickness of the stripe (except for AirPoint and the Overhead Tracking Frame, which do not requirea stripe) and the horizontal resolution determines the resolution of the GestPoint system. However, since we are combining the images from two cameras, we can not immediately assume that theresolution of the system is 640 anything.

To answer this we must first understand that the area measured by each pixel in the camera isdetermined by the length of the lens and the distance from the camera. A long lens with ahigh-powered zoom will mean that each pixel sees a very small area and increases the resolution ofthe system. Also, a camera that's mounted very far away decreases the resolution of the system. In asetup where the cameras are mounted very close to the tracking region and that the horizontal fieldof view is exactly 90 degrees, each camera has a horizontal resolution of 640 pixels, and each pixelwill see an angle of 90 degrees/640 pixels, or 0.140625 degrees.

When the two cameras’ images are combined, the pixel shape is determined by the intersection ofthe rays from each camera. In the schematic below, it is clear that in certain sections of the trackingregion, the resolution is better in some areas and worse in others, and that in some sections, theresolution is higher in one dimension than it is in the other. With 640 pixels per horizontal line oneach camera, a typical GestPoint system will have over 300,000 effective pixels of various shapesand sizes.

GestPoint includes software sub-pixel resolution enhancement, which estimates a higher resolutionposition. The cursor appears to move smoothly between the "effective pixels" described above whena user drags a finger or hand across the screen. This gives the illusion that the system is tracking atthe full display resolution even when the display has a significantly higher resolution than the camera. However, because the additional resolution is estimated in software, the accuracy is limited to thatdescribed above.

Introduction

1.4 Summary of the Technology

The GestPoint system tracks the motion of objects, like a hand, within a 3 dimensional area seen bytwo cameras. This system is unique in that it does not require the user to touch anything or wear anydevices, and uses only the video image to determine the location of the hand.

It works by finding the contrast between the brightness of the hand and the background, and usingthis information to find the 2 dimensional location of the hand in each camera view. GestPoint thenreconstructs the images from the two cameras to get a 3 dimensional location of the hand.

To ensure adequate contrast between the hand and the background, a number of backgrounds areavailable. The most common and most effective background is a black/white/black stripe. With thistype of background, light colored hands show up well against the black background, and dark handsshow up against the white background.

The stripe is typically arranged in a U-shape with the cameras located at the top corners of the “U”.The cameras are pointed down into the “U” so that they clearly see the entire stripe. Any object thatpasses through the plane of the “U” is detected by the cameras and tracked by the system.

Page 12: Kiosk Hardware Installation ManualImmersive Therapy Suite ...gesturetek.com/oldhome/support/gestpoint/pdfs/GestPoint_User_Guide.pdfTo add Daily Reboot to Windows Startup ... answer

8

Introduction

The thickness of the stripe depends on the application, but is typically as narrow as possible whilemaintaining proper function. For each portion of the stripe, the GestPoint system requires at least 2pixels of each of the black/white/black stripes. Therefore, the entire black/white/black stripe must fillat least 6 pixels vertically in the camera’s image. The higher the vertical resolution of the camera, thesmaller the stripe can be. Also, the closer the stripe is to the camera, the smaller it can be. For acomplete analysis of the thickness of the stripe required for your window, please use the Gestpoint

Through Window Calculator software at http://www.gesturetek.com/support/gestpoint/support.php.

Some GestPoint systems use infrared illumination in lieu of a stripe. A frame around the interactivearea is not required when infrared is used. However, infrared systems cannot be used inenvironments with high levels of ambient infrared light.

GestPoint Through Window/HoloFrame

2 GestPoint Through Window/HoloFrame

2.1 Hardware Setup

The GestPoint Through Window system includes two cameras, two mirrors, a background stripe, acomputer, and a display monitor. The setup will also include mounts to attach the cameras to thewindow, and cabling to connect the cameras to the computer.

HoloFrame is a self-contained unit, so the cameras are part of the frame, as is the stripe and displayscreen.

The hardware setup is a more involved process for the Window system and is described in the nextsection. The software setup is the same for both units.

2.1.1 To install the cameras and mirrors

GestPoint Through Window/HoloFrame

For window applications, the cameras are mounted in a small protective case to the insideof the window pointing straight out. Mirrors are mounted to the outside of the window tore-direct the image down towards the stripe and the user.

Page 14: Kiosk Hardware Installation ManualImmersive Therapy Suite ...gesturetek.com/oldhome/support/gestpoint/pdfs/GestPoint_User_Guide.pdfTo add Daily Reboot to Windows Startup ... answer

10

GestPoint Through Window/HoloFrame

To find the exact positions of the cameras, refer to the Gestpoint Through Window

Calculator software at http://www.gesturetek.com/support/gestpoint/support.php. Thecameras may be mounted to the inside of the window with cables oriented either out or in,depending on the aesthetics of the installation. The angle of the cameras should match themirror mounts. Using sticky Velcro permits easy removal or re-adjustment.

The mirror mounts should be mounted to the outside of the window pointing diagonallydown and in so that the camera can see the entire stripe on the window. It is easiest tomake fine adjustments to the orientation of the mirror mounts once all of the hardware isinstalled and the software is launched. The Velcro mounts make for easy adjustments.

The lens length required depends on the distance from the camera to the upper edge of thedisplay monitor and on the distance between the edge of the window and the far edge of thedisplay monitor. For a minimum and recommended field of view for your window, refer to

the Gestpoint Through Window Calculator software athttp://www.gesturetek.com/support/gestpoint/support.php.

The focus for the cameras is on the outer ring of the lenses. Once all of the hardware isinstalled and the software launched, it is possible to focus the cameras to the center of thearea to be tracked.

GestPoint Through Window/HoloFrame

2.1.2 To install the computer and display screen

GestPoint Through Window

1. Install the computer in a safe location within ten feet of the window. This is necessary toensure that the cabling (FireWire or USB) will reach the cameras. For security reasons, itmay be necessary to build an enclosure with a lock for the computer.

2. Plug the computer power cord into the back of the computer and into any power outlet. Do not plug the FireWire cable from the cameras into the computer yet.

If you are using a 6-pin to 4-pin FireWire cable or you are plugging the unit into alaptop computer, you may have to use a powered hub, to provide power to the cameras.

3. Install the display screen either right up against the inside of the glass, or at a distance ofbetween one meter and five meters behind the glass.

If the monitor is against the glass, it is possible to configure the GestPoint system tobehave like a touch screen, which is the preferred configuration. If the monitor isinstalled away from the glass, there is little reference for the user to pinpoint the exactlocation of the cursor by pointing from far away, and the Window system can beconfigured to allow the user to hone in and hover to select objects on the computer.

4. Plug the display (projector, monitor, LCD screen, etc.) cable into the graphics card of thecomputer and the power cord into the power outlet.

5. Install the GestPoint software. (See Software Setup.)

Other Options

6 Other Options

The Set Strips and Screen Alignment items on the GestPoint console are shortcuts to the samefunctions within the Full Setup. If adjustments in these settings need to be made, you don't have to gothrough the Full Setup to do it.

Advanced Options provides dialog boxes where fine adjustments can be made and is intended for thepower user or to provide information for technical support.

Mouse provides the opportunity to configure the behavior of the mouse pointer.

Save allows you to save your settings if you have changed the default settings of your system. (Thisis applicable to GestPoint Through Window and U-Frame only, as you should not be changing thesettings of the AirPoint system.)

Load allows you to load your individual saved settings or the original default settings, if you wish torevert to them.

6.1 Set Strips

This is a shortcut to the Select Stripes instructions that are in the full setup. If a camera gets jostled,or a new stripe has been installed, you may have to redo this step. Rather than going through the fullsetup, you can come straight here.

6.2 Screen Alignment

In most cases, doing a full setup carefully and as accurately as possible will yield excellent resultsand there will be no need to perform a screen alignment. However, in some circumstances the mousecursor movement may not follow the finger accurately. This may be more noticeable in GestPointThrough Window systems where the display monitor is close to the window. For these cases screenalignment can help correct these minor inconsistencies. If the inconsistencies are large, it is better togo through the full setup again rather than to try to fix them in the screen alignment.

With the U-Frame, you may want to move the trackable area vertically or horizontally. In this case, the Fine Alignment method can be used to adjust the top, bottom, and sides of the screen.

There is no need to do an alignment with the AirPoint system.

There are several alignment methods:

§ Point Alignment - the crudest method of alignment which should generally be avoided.

§ Fine Alignment - similar to Point alignment, but allows the user to finely adjust the top, bottom, and sides of the screen.

§ Keystone Alignment - adjusts for Keystone only, which is the shape of the trapezoid created bya projector. This alignment is used only with a rear-projector display screen system.

§ Advanced Alignment - used to correct very small alignment problems in the system, but doesnot maintain the perfect trapezoid needed for rear projector screens.

§ Advanced Keystone Alignment - combines all of the features of the Keystone and AdvancedAlignment. This should only be used for projector screen setups and is generally not necessary.

This procedure will correct the mouse cursor position, so it shouldnot be involved in the target selection process. Once all four corners have beenselected, the software takes the average height of the top two targets and defines that asthe top edge. This is repeated for the bottom, and each side to give the boundaries of allfour sides of the screen.

106

Other Options

6.3.4 To check the camera image

§ On the GestPoint console, click advanced options and select the Filter tab.

The Filter tab allows the user to adjust how the tracker determines the contrastlevels required to detect the object. These are advanced features that should not beadjusted without contacting Technical Support.

This tab does have good diagnostic value, however, and can be used to detect apoor Stripe Selection or cameras that have moved.

A good image with no object in the camera views looks like the following image.Notice that the Result lines are solid, indicating that no object is detected.

A good image with a finger in the camera views looks like the following image. Noticethat the Result lines have a single white spot corresponding to the location of the finger.

Other Options

6.3.5 To smooth the mouse cursor movement

1. On the GestPoint console, click advanced options and select the Smoothing tab.

2. Set the Small Movement region (indicated by the small red box in the image), using theHorizontal and Vertical Distance arrows.

The Small Movement setting determines the distance that the hand can travelbefore there is any movement of the mouse cursor. This should be set to a small sizefor Stripe configurations, and larger for Arbitrary. The Small Movement shouldnormally have a Weight of 1.0, meaning that movement inside the box is 100%eliminated.

3. Set the Large Movement region (indicated by the small yellow box in the image), in thesame manner as above.

The Large Movement setting determines the distance that the hand can travel thatcauses a slow movement of the mouse cursor. For Stripe configurations, this box shouldbe the same size as the Small Movement box, which will eliminate any “sliding” effect ofthe mouse cursor. For Arbitrary configurations, the box should be larger than the SmallMovement box, and have a Weight of approximately 0.5, meaning that movement ofthe hand in the region between the red and yellow boxes will cause 50% of thatmovement in the mouse cursor.
