What is a key interlock?A key interlock is a safety device applied to two or more moveable parts, preventing (or allowing) a movement oroperation of one part only when another part is locked in a predetermined position. KIRK® key interlocks operateon the principle that the key can be removed only when the locking bolt is in a predetermined position.

Important information required when ordering key interlocks:

• Which lock type will physically fit on each device in your application?

• How is the interlock scheme to work - what is the equipment sequence and various scenarios (if any)?

• What locking bolt length is required? Note: locking bolts are referenced in their withdrawn position and alwaysextend 3/4” when the key is turned.

• How many lock cylinders are required and what are the key removable positions?

• What is the name and location of the ultimate user of the interlocks? Kirk Key Interlock Company assigns keycylinder numbers based on this information and records that information for each ultimate user.

• Is coordination with other interlocks required? If so, are the other interlocks existing interlocks or will anothermanufacturer or contractor order interlocks for coordination?

www.kirkkey.com KIRK® Key Interlock TerminologySingle Cylinder Interlocks

The drawing above shows a single cylinder Type F interlock with key removable extended (E). When the lockingbolt is extended, the key is released. When the locking bolt is withdrawn, the key is trapped.

A cylinder designated key removable "E" will release the key when the locking bolt is in the extended position. Thisis by far the most common single cylinder interlock. A cylinder designated key removable "W" will release the keywhen the locking bolt is in the withdrawn position. This is less common and only seen under unique circumstances.

Key removable positions for multi-cylinder interlocks are shown on the following pages.

www.kirkkey.com Graphite Lubrication Kit

HD Series interlocks should be periodically lubricated with a small amount of dry powdered graphite. Do not use oilof any type as the oil will collect dirt and "gum up" the lock cylinder so that it will not operate.

Kirk Key Interlock Company offers a Graphite Lubrication Kit (part number GL-1) complete with instructions foruse. The powdered graphite is supplied in a plastic tube that can be "squeezed" to force a small amount ofgraphite behind the inner turn shaft and at the base of the lock bolt where it protrudes from the lock body. Turn thekey a few times in order to distribute the graphite behind the lock cylinder.

Apply a small amount of graphite to each lock cylinder as part of your regular maintenance program in order tokeep your interlocks working smoothly.

NOTE: Stainless steel dust covers should be utilized to protect the lock cylinders when located outdoors or in ademanding environment. Dust covers are available separately and can be easily added to any interlock.

If the interlock will not operate after following the above procedures, contact Kirk Key Interlock Company for aReturn Authorization Form and return the interlock to us for repair. Kirk Key Interlock Company will quickly repairand recondition all interlocks for a nominal cost.

www.kirkkey.com Type DC - Panel Door Interlock

A Type DC interlock has two parts: a lock body and a catch. The catch is available in two styles, one suited to wellaligned doors, the other suited to mis-aligned doors. The lock body is typically attached to a door or gate thatswings open. The catch is typically attached to the door frame. The DC interlock is designed for use on light dutypanel doors in dry, non-corrosive environments where the interlock is subject to light to medium use.

When the key is turned and the door is opened, the lock body and catch are separated causing the key to becometrapped in the lock. The key is held in the interlock as long as the door is open. When the door is properly closed, the catch seats fully into the lock body allowing the key to be turned and released, thereby locking the door closed.

The standard Type DC interlock is designed to accept the catch from the rear (or back) of the lock body.

All parts of the Type DC interlock are made from 316 stainless steel.

OPTIONS:Catch Type - Optional spring mounted catch (Flex Catch) is available for badly mis-aligned doors.

Front Catch Option - The Type DC interlock is available with a front entry catch for applications where the door orgate opens by swinging inwards.

Stamp Key Interchange - specify an alphanumeric code to be stamped on the cylinder face and the key (e.g. A1,A2, B1, etc. - up to 5 characters). See HD Data Sheet for Keys (3.4) and Terminology (4.1) for details.

www.kirkkey.com Interlock Transfer Panel

The Transfer Panel is an exchange point in which the final keys of one or more interlock sequences are exchangedfor one or more different keys for additional operations.

All primary (initiating) keys must be inserted into the transfer panel before any secondary (retained) keys can beturned and removed. Once a secondary key is removed, all primary keys are held captive in the transfer panel.

Transfer panel primary keys are generally related to power sources (such as breakers, T/R switches, leveldetectors, etc.) and secondary keys are often associated with access doors.

Transfer keys, locks, and all mechanical parts are completely enclosed in a NEMA 12 enclosure.

HD Series Transfer Panels are designed to accept and release keys sequentially. Insert and turn the missing keys(one at a time starting from the end) and work your way towards the held keys. The held keys will be released (oneat a time) in a continuation of the same sequence. Reverse the key sequence when restoring service.

OPTIONS• Key Sequence - When ordering, specify the number of primary and secondary keys. Primary keys are removedfrom the transfer panel and retained in other interlocks. Secondary keys are held in the transfer panel.

• Enclosure - NEMA 4 and NEMA 4X are available. Please specify the NEMA rating of the enclosure.

• Number of Locks - See table on page 3 for details.

• Stamp Key Interchange - specify an alphanumeric code to be stamped on the cylinder face and the key (e.g. A1,A2, B1, etc. - up to 5 characters). See HD Series Data Sheet for Keys (3.4) and Terminology (4.1) for details.

www.kirkkey.com Type DM - Access Door Interlock

The Type DM access door interlock is designed for hinged doors, manhole covers, sliding doors or any sort ofhatch or lid. It is well suited for loose fitting doors or hatches that will not accommodate a precise fitting door lock.

The Type DM consists of a main body and a latch bolt with twelve links of 316 stainless steel chain. The lock bodycan be mounted to the equipment and the chain can be bolted or welded to the door or hatch with the properamount of “slack” for the latch bolt to reach the DM lock body.

Under normal conditions the key is upstream in the interlock scheme and the chain/bolt is trapped in the locksecuring the door in the closed position. The latch bolt cannot be released until the key is inserted and turned. Onlythen can the latch bolt be rotated 1/4 turn and released from the lock thereby trapping the key. The door or hatchmust be closed and the latch bolt must be returned to the lock body in order to free the key.

All components of the HD Series Type DM interlock are made from electropolished 316 stainless steel. The latchbolt has a gasket to protect against the introduction of dust and dirt into the lock body.

OPTIONS

• Key Removable - the single cylinder Type DM is always built key removable “E", which means the key is releasedonly when the latch bolt is trapped in the lock body (door locked).

• Multi-Cylinder - up to 2 cylinders available. The first cylinder will always be "E" (see above). A two cylinder DMinterlock requiring two keys to unlock should be designated "E" for both cylinders. If the second cylinder of a twocylinder DM is to provide a "Personnel Key" that is available when the door is unlocked, designate that cylinder askey removable "W". ("E" keys are trapped when the door is unlocked, "W" keys are trapped when the door islocked.)

www.kirkkey.com Type D - Door Mounted (Detachable)

A Type D interlock has two parts: a main body with one or more cylinders and a latch block. The main body istypically attached to a door or hatch that swings open. The latch block is typically bolted to the door frame. Whenthe key is turned and the door is opened, the main body and latch block are separated causing the key to betrapped and the locking bolt to be held in the withdrawn position. The key is always held in the Type D interlockwhenever the two parts are separated. When the door is properly closed, the lock body seats fully against thelatch block, releasing the locking bolt. The operating key can now be rotated to extend the locking bolt into thelatch block. After the locking bolt is fully extended, the operating key may be removed. The interlock housing andlatch block are made from electropolished 316 stainless steel. The lock bolt is made from 5/8 inch diameter 316stainless steel.

OPTIONS• Key Removable - a single cylinder Type D interlock is always built key removable "E" which means the key isreleased only when the lock bolt is extended into the latch block (door closed).

• Multi-Cylinder - up to 3 cylinders available. A multi-cylinder Type D requiring all keys to unlock the door shouldhave each cylinder designated "E". Any cylinders that are designated "W" will release a key when the door isunlocked - such as a personnel key. Note that HD series Type D interlocks with "W" keys will be built with the "W"keys located nearest the locking bolt. ("W" keys are trapped when the door is locked - "E" keys are trapped whenthe door is unlocked.)

www.kirkkey.com Type T - Key Transfer Block

The Type T interlock is an assembly of two or more lock cylinders in a single housing. Type T interlocks aredesigned to retain one or more keys (called held keys) while the remaining (initiating) key(s) are removed. Thisallows an exchange of keys in an interlock sequence. All initiating keys must be inserted into the Type T interlockbefore the held keys can be removed. Once a held key is removed, the initiating keys are trapped in the interlock.

Type T interlocks are transfer blocks since they do not have a lock bolt projecting through the housing. Often theneed for a transfer block can be eliminated by using multi-cylinder interlocks mounted on other devices, making itunnecessary to go through an additional transfer block operation.

All components of the HD Series Type T interlock are made from electropolished 316 stainless steel.

OPTIONS• Key Removable - specify which key(s) are initiating ("E") and which key(s) are held ("W").

• Multi-Cylinder - up to 3 cylinders available.

• Stamp Key Interchange - specify an alphanumeric code to be stamped on the cylinder face and the key (e.g. A1,A2, B1, etc. - up to 5 characters). See HD Series Data Sheet for Keys (3.4) and Terminology (4.1) for details.
