FilmArnside Highlights will be showing a double fi lm bill in Arnside Educational Institute, Church Hill:

UP (certifi cate U)A comedy adventure about 78-year-old balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen, who fi nally fulfi ls his lifelong dream of a great adventure when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and fl ies away to the wilds of South America.

But he discovers all too late that his biggest nightmare has stowed away on the trip: an overly optimistic 8-year-old Wilderness Explorer named Russell. From the Academy Award-nominated director Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc.), Disney/Pixar’s Up invites you on a hilarious journey into a lost world, with the least likely duo on Earth.

Bright Star (certifi cate PG)London 1818: a secret love aff air begins between 23 year-old English poet, John Keats (Ben Whishaw), and the girl next door, Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish), an out-spoken student of high fashion. This unlikely pair begins at odds, he thinking her a stylish minx, while she was unimpressed not only by his poetry but also by literature in general.

However, when Fanny hears that Keats is nursing his seriously ill younger brother, her eff orts to help touch Keats and when she asks him to teach her about poetry he agrees. The poetry soon becomes a romantic remedy that works not only to sort their diff erences, but also to fuel an impassioned love aff air.

When Fanny’s alarmed mother and Keats’ best friend fi nally awake to their attachment, the relationship has an unstoppable momentum. Intensely and helplessly absorbed in each other, the young lovers are swept deeply into powerful new sensations.

Special EventsThe Sound of MusicThis has to be the greatest musical of all time. It is known by everybody and is suitable for all ages. QES is renowned for its school productions and this year is no exception. Set in 1930s Austria, the story of the arrival of a young nun, Maria, into the cold, gloomy Von Trapp household sets the scene for the musical. Maria and the children begin to liven up the surroundings, much to the disapproval of Captain Von Trapp and his friends. Eventually love blossoms for the unlikely couple and under the storm clouds of war they make their escape to freedom. This piece of musical theatre will be performed by our students from Years 9 to 13 and is directed by Mr Lee Fleming with musical direction by Mrs Jen Hartley.

The Kirkby Irregulars presents

ReviewsThe Geoff Eales TrioI really enjoyed the concert that the Geoff Eales Trio put on. My favourite type of music is Jazz. I loved his style of playing and they were all amazing. At the end of his concert I bought a CD of his music, because I enjoyed it so much. I even got Geoff ’s autograph.Jess Wood, QES 8K

London Gypsy OrchestraOn Monday 2nd November members of the choir went to Settlebeck High School where we started to learn some songs in foreign Languages. We learnt songs in Bulgarian and Romanian. It was diff erent to be working with students from another school but we made a good choir together. We rehearsed every day that week with two sessions at Settlebeck and two at QES.

On Friday 6th we went to Ulverston Coronation Hall, where we had a two-hour rehearsal with the whole orchestra. At 7pm the doors opened to the public. For the fi rst half of the performance we sat in the audience and listened to the London Gypsy Orchestra. Just before the break we had to go and stand at the side of the stage and sing the last two songs of the fi rst half. After the break we went up on to the main stage we started with the song Posadila Baba, which included some Bulgarian shouts. We fi nished with the encore, which only had words for the verses. A good time was had by everyone.Emma Hopkins, QES 9S
