Conference aiming tohelp forge closer linksHAVING lived in Kirklees practically

all my life up until 2008, I hadalways been based business-wise inLeeds, Bradford and South Yorkshire.

In 2008, I moved my business home toKirklees and realised that although I knewmasses of businesses around Yorkshire, oneplace I did not know so many was inKirklees.

After spending some time out and aboutin our district, I soon realised that it wasand still is (in my opinion) the most friendlyand open place in which to do business.

From here, I wanted to be able to assistthe area in becoming financially stronger.

I subscribe to the opinion that if morelocal businesses are working together, thenthere is more local capital swimming aboutour local economy, making it stronger andultimately securing and creating morejobs.

This is the whole purpose of KBC – tobring large numbers of businesses togetherto enable them learn more about each otherand ultimately, forge closer trade links witheach other.

I am proud to see KBC going fromstrength to strength each year and I wouldlike to thank our partners, the University ofHuddersfield, Kirklees Council, Fantastic

Media, Ramsdens Solicitors, HuddersfieldTown FC, The Examiner, Code Blue Com-munications, SMileS SMS and Hi TechBusiness Machines.

I would like to thank our raft of exhibit-ors who make the show what it is with theirenergy on the day alongside the hundredsand hundreds of delegates who take theirtime out to visit and celebrate all that isgood in business in Kirklees.

One of the biggest compliments paid tothe show I can highlight is from Kirklees’titan of a businessman Dean Hoyle, whosaid: “Kirklees Business Conference is ourdistrict’s flagship business event and I’mproud to have been asked to participate andimpart my knowledge to the local businesscommunity. KBC is key to the success ofthe Kirklees economy.”

Watch this space for exciting news ofdevelopments in our events programme asHillrich, along with our partners, will beshowcasing the cream of Kirklees’ Busi-nesses across 2012 in the run up to nextyear’s KBC.

Thank you for reading this supplementand I hope to see you on the day.

Share Dean’s excitingbusiness journey inlively Q&A sessionTOWN chairman Dean Hoyle, founder of Card Factory, willheadline this year’s KirkleesBusiness Conference.

Dean will offer delegates aforthright insight into how startingby selling greetings cards from theback of an old van led to themind-boggling sale of CardFactory and then owning thefootball club he has supportedman and boy.

This will be run as a questionand answer session allowing localbusiness people to pick his brainsand find out what is relevant tothem.

Together with wife Janet, Deanset up greetings card retailer CardFactory in 1997 and built abusiness empire consisting of over500 shops nationwide – anachievement that saw him namedErnst & Young North and Midlands

Entrepreneur of the Year in June2009.

Dean became chairman ofHuddersfield Town in June, 2009,having joined the board ofdirectors as chairman-elect inApril, 2008. In March, 2010, hebecame sole owner ofHuddersfield Town and on April 8,2010, Card Factory was sold toprivate equity group Charterhouse.

Danny Matharu, event directorof KBC, said: “Dean is a trueentrepreneur, an icon of enterpriseand a real Kirklees champion whostarted his business with very littleand grafted his way to achieveastonishing success.

“This Q&A format will allow for amore interactive seminar and allowDean to share the secrets of hissuccess in a two-way format.

“For me, Dean is a realmodern-day national business

leader. After creating a businessempire and selling it, he continuesto support our local economywhen he could have easily retiredand led the easy life. This really isa one-off opportunity to pick thebrains of our district’s best.”

On agreeing to speak at KBC2011 Dean said: “KirkleesBusiness Conference is ourdistrict’s flagship business eventand I’m proud to have been askedto participate and impart myknowledge to the local businesscommunity.

“KBC is key to the success ofthe Kirklees economy as itencourages local businesses toopen up closer trade links witheach other. The conference hasgrown year-on-year and as such, itis fitting that Huddersfield Town isnow an event partner.”

How Kirstytamed theDragons!KIRSTY Henshaw delivered one of the

best pitches ever seen on Dragons’Den when she appeared on the Den withher passion, commitment and grittydetermination to succeed.

Kirsty became one of the youngest entrepren-eurs to receive investment on the show when shesecured a £65,000 investment from DragonsPeter Jones and Duncan Bannatyne in return fora 30% stake in her healthy frozen dessert busi-ness, Worthenshaws.

The range of dairy-free, nut-free andsugar-free frozen puddings has now beenrebranded to Worthenshaws “Freedom” andlaunched across the UK in all major supermar-kets in September, 2010.

The rebranding will enable Kirsty to planother healthy products to complement thedessert range.

Peter Jones has staked his reputation onKirsty going on to sell millions of her dessertseach year.

This looks highly probable because Kirsty’sproduct is innovative and offers a solution to aclear niche in the food market.

Kirsty was inspired to create her range offrozen products by her four-year-old son Jacobwho has a serious nut allergy and is intolerant todairy and gluten.

She began experimenting with a little ice

cream maker from Argos in her tiny kitchen athome.

Convinced she had a recipe that children andadults would enjoy as a healthy alternative to icecream, she approached a local ice cream manu-facturer to produce the products in larger quant-ities.

Kirsty’s knowledge of the health foodindustry comes from her parents who run ahealth food shop.

Growing up in such an environment helpedher devise her own strategy and gave her theconfidence, drive and passion for hard work thatis so important for any entrepreneur.

In addition, Kirsty did performing arts atschool and amateur dramatics although shemaintains these skills could not prepare her forthe ‘surreal’ experience of appearing onDragons’ Den.

An inspirational, confident and ‘can-do’young woman, Kirsty will talk to conferencedelegates about her entrepreneurial journey sofar.

She emphasises the importance of buildinggreat relationships with the people around youand knowing your business model inside-out.

Kirsty is currently focused on building theWorthenshaws Freedom brand and consolidat-ing her position as one of the most inspirationalyoung businesswomen in the country.

Learning the lessonsfrom show business!IF you aren't aware of her, Nicky Pattinson is prob-

ably not what you expect. The accent certainlyisn't Queen’s English – and she has, well, “a waywith her”.

Nicky’s story reads like a blockbusting film – and shereckons there’s no doubt there is a destiny to how shelanded in the place she’s in and that her purpose in life isexactly what she’s doing.

She will describe herself as “The UK’s number one salesassistant – ranked in the world”. Although she’s joking, that’s probably what she is! She laughs and says if she’d beengiven a quid for every time someone asks, “how do you dothat?” she could liberate every supermarket trolley inEngland!

Some of the “sales transformations” she has undertakenin the past two years have been seen as nothing short of amiracle in many guises. From airport lounges to kit-chens, walking gear and legal services to dental insur-ance.

Nicky said: “The world got stuck on the phrase customerservice – that’s not the same as SELLING in the firstplace.

“Part of the reason we are in this mess is because nobodyever SELLS anything to anyone anymore.

“In show business every nuance is considered, the music, the costume, the magic words, the character is understood. We have a lot to learn from those components.”

Danny Matharu, of event organisers Hillrich, said:“Nicky has effectively rewritten the books on introducingnew money and new people into companies without everonce dropping her unmistakable Yorkshire accent.

“She now flies between the UK and the US to work withboth lone business owners and the largest conglomerates tointegrate Show Business Selling into enterprise.

“Her involvement at this year’s conference came aboutfrom a telephone call where she was telling me what she hadbeen doing in the US and it just blew me away.

“Show Business Selling will excite all those who want tostart selling again and stop just hoping it will happen.” ■ YORKSHIRE ROSE: Nicky Pattinson will deliver a straight-talking message about the importance of selling at the conference

THE Design Mechanics are one ofHuddersfield’s business success stories.

When the company launched five yearsago, they were taking a massive gamble, completely going against the grain for agraphic design company.

Dave Pannell, the company’s creativedirector, who has an impressive backgroundin the industry, having worked for householdnames including Harrods, the BBC and anumber of international companies, explained: “I was getting really frustrated withthe reputation the graphic design industrywas getting, especially website designers.

“I wanted to start completely from scratchwith a new type of graphic design company, one built on service, approachability andmost importantly a known cost.

“When we launched the business, everyother design company in the area said it was

impossible to sell high-quality design to apricelist. Five years on, we’ve proved themwrong.”

The Design Mechanics have developed aclient base of over 1,000 businesses in WestYorkshire – providing websites, businesscards, leaflets, and complete companyre-brands all to a pricelist.
