Kirtley Sheet Metal was founded in 1981 by PhilipKirtley. The company installed built-up roofing, mainlyfor commercial buildings in the Houston area. Upon
forming his own company, Philip began a transition into therelatively new field on standing seam metal roofing. The trendof metal roofing was rapidly growing stronger in the Houstonarea and Berridge Manufacturing Company, founded in 1970,was establishing a reputation as a leader in the relativelynew field of architectural metal roofing. Kirtley Sheet Metalbegan to install various types of metal roofing, including somealuminum shake shingle jobs using Berridge products. Com-mercial projects which utilized standing seam roofing wouldcomprise the majority of Kirtley Sheet Metal’s metal roofingwork over the next three decades, while the firm also offeredseveral flat roofing products.. In the mid 90’s Kirtley Sheet Metal began using Berridgeportable roll forming equipment to fabricate continuous lengthstanding seam metal roofing panels, and thus began a newprocess which would virtually revolutionize the company’smode of operation. Phillip Kirtley describes the transition tosite-forming: “We found there was no comparison with buy-ing factory-made standing seam panels from other compa-nies -- with site forming our own panels, there is no waitingfor delivery and we are in control of the job schedule from
