Newsletter

For just as each oF us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same Function, so in christ we, though many, Form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

Romans 12:4-5

Welcome to our term 2 newsletter. This term our theme has been community and we have been

exploring through lessons, assemblies and other activities how we can live as a Christ like community. Our term verse reminds us that we are all a little different, but when we come together we play our part in making the community function well.

Activity week is always a great way to build community within our school, especially in the secondary homerooms as each class gets to spend the week in close confines, learning how to love, reconcile and unite as a class.

Jesus taught us about this in the Lord’s Prayer, he asked us to pray for his kingdom to come, and we hope that KISC is a little kingdom like community here in Nepal, he taught us to forgive others quickly, essential for any community.

As Christmas approaches make sure you have marked your calendars for the 16 December when we will be having our Christmas service on the basketball court. Rehearsals are well underway and we look forward to seeing how it has all come together on the 16th. It will be a great opportunity to celebrate the coming of the one who brings restoration to the world, our savior Jesus Christ.

STUDENTSTerm 2 is one of our shortest terms, but we still manage to fit in as much as we can. The term started out with Activity Week for both secondary and primary. This is always one of the most fun weeks and a great week for building community which is our term

theme. We’ve also had secondary parent interviews and the annual KISC Winter Fair. I’m looking forward to our upcoming events too, such as the KISC Invitation Basketball Tournament, our first primary Open House, the Zuala cup and finishing out the term with our annual Christmas Carol Service and celebrating the birth of Jesus.

I love this time of the year as Christmas is approaching! There are so many different ways that people celebrate this holiday around the world, but there is still one focus and that is the birth of our Savior! I was asking the primary students why we celebrate Christmas and one of them said, “It’s not about the presents, it’s about Jesus!” This is so true and I love that a six year old already understands this.“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” Luke 2:11My prayer for the rest of this term, is that each student will continue to learn more academically and spiritually and that our KISC community will continue to grow stronger.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

The Year K class performed the story “11 Blind Mice” during an assembly about community. They shared a message of how we need to look at more than just a small part of something, and to look at the whole thing as they discovered “something” by their pond. Great job, Year K!

Y9 PAINTS BHUSALDANDA SCHOOL IN TANSEN

Year 9’s Activitiy Week project involved painting classrooms in Bhusaldana School in Tansen. The students worked incredibly well together both in small and large teams. All our goals were met and extra were accomplished too.

We have forged great relations with Bhusaldanda primary school and also improved the connection with KISC EQUIP. The school principal was very appreciative of our efforts, but it was a shame more local students didn’t or couldn’t participate because the school was closed while were there.

I TOLD THE STORY OF TFLGF EF6DFF; (THREE SOYBEANS) TO MY GRANDMOTHER

Nepal has a great story-telling culture. In the past, its religious and cultural history was orally passed from one generation

to the next in the form of stories. Stories were told during various occasions. This rich tradition is gradually losing its influence. Children, today, have almost no chance to listen and read stories at home and school. There are few books available in their school libraries, which are not easily accessible to all children. Keeping all these things in consideration KISC EQUIP has been providing classroom library sets for grade UKG-VIII in its partner schools in Palpa and Lamjung. Each set has colourful grade-appropriate stories and other subject-related books. During this academic year, two classroom libraries were set up in Grade 3 and 4 in six of our partner schools in Lamjung and ten in Palpa. The EQUIP team was pleasantly surprised during the follow up visit in Lamjung. The joy of having library in their classroom was evident in children’s enthusiastic response to the follow up questions. All the students in each grade read at least a couple of books. The top three readers in both grades 3 and 4 were girls. Merina Pradhan from Grade 3 and Sharmila Gurung from Grade 4 have read 15 and 9 books respectively. The two top readers were awarded at the school assembly. It has also encouraged other students to read books.

Nine years old Meria Pradhan (grade 3) said, ‘I have never read books before. I really enjoyed reading them. The book I love the most is ‘The little girl follows the rain’ because there was a drought; the plants and people needed water. The little girl requested the sky to give rain and they got rain. This girl was very happy to help others. So, this book inspired me to help others. I have started to help my friends in the class. I helped them to do their home work and class work’. Ten years old Sharmila Gurung (grade 4) said, ‘I have started to appreciate the poems. I now read poems to my brother who is 4 years old. I also tell him bed time stories to put him to bed. I told the story of ‘Three Soybeans’ to my grandmother and she was very happy. My favorite story book is ‘Lau Jaa’ it is a Nepali story book which talks about different superstitions, such as sneezing, seeing empty bucket, black cat crossing the path etc. But the girl continues her journey and at the end no bad luck happened to her.’

EQUIP HELPS TEACHERS IN NEPAL TO GAIN INTERNATIONAL TEACHING AWARD

As part of the ongoing partnership between EQUIP and Rato Bangala Foundation, Annie Brown delivered a Level 1 Philosophy for Children (P4C) training for 22 teachers at the Rato Bangala School on Sunday 15th November. The training provides teachers with the skills to help students to reason and think for themselves in a ‘community of enquiry’ in which they look to learn from one and other rather than the teacher. A second day will encourage the teachers to practice the skills with their own classes and gain the UK recognised P4C Level 1 certification.

EQUIP TRAIN WORLD VISION STAFF

On Saturday 3 October all of Nepal’s World Vision staff took part in practical workshops led by Annie Brown, Suzie Parr and Dil Bahadur Chhetri. The 160 participants worked in groups to explore common work place challenges and to think about how creativity can them. This new venture for EQUIP will enable links with the International NGO’s education work here in Nepal.

making connections through art 30 teachers from across the Kathmandu Valley came to KISC on Saturday 21st November to take part in a day of making connections. The training was an opportunity for EQUIP’s Kathmandu partner schools to work with teachers from other schools, explore art in new ways and learn new skills. It also prepared teachers for bringing students to take part in KISA (Kathmandu Inter Schools Art) in February 2016.

Rooftop Garden Comes to LifeOn 7th November, the Kitchen Garden Team organized a Rooftop Gardening Party!

Here is a big thank you to all of you who came and helped with the KISC EQUIP Op’s roof top garden. It turned out great! We will be finishing off the trellis soon. If you did not get a chance to see the finished garden please come by and look around. We would love to see you.
