Thursday Morning Class: Rabbi Segal’s Thursday morning class will take place this Thursday at 11:00am in the library. The class will cover various topics on the Parashat Hashavua. Scholar-in-Residence Shabbaton: Save the date for March 27-28 when we will be hosting tech entrepre-neur, Mois Navon, co-founder and Rabbi of Mobileye. Having designed the System-On-A-Chip and holding several patents in the hardware, he has a deep understanding of the system that drives the autonomous car revolution. Additionally, Mois became known as the “Rabbi of Mobileye” for answering halachic questions at Mobileye on personal and corporate levels and for teaching a weekly shiur to religious and nonreligious em-ployees. Rabbi Navon will be giving a Friday night talk after a community Friday night dinner as well as giv-ing various talks on Shabbat. To sign up for the community dinner, go to http://shabbaton.bethelnewton.org.

Purim Dinim & Minhagim The Mitzvot of Purim

Megillah: It is required to hear the Megillah both evening and morning, to tell and retell

the story of our salvation from Haman’s evil plot. Both men and women are obligated to

hear the Megillah twice.

Mishloach Manot: It is required to send to a friend, during the daytime of Purim, a gift

package containing at least two kinds of ready-to-eat food items—enhancing the spirit of

friendship and sharing.

Mattanot La’evyonim: It is required to give charity to the poor during the daytime of

Purim, evoking the true joy of helping our brethren in need. Collection plates will be

available at Shul on Purim for this purpose.

Seudat Purim: A festive meal celebrated during the daytime of Purim culminates the

day’s activities in a spirit of camaraderie, thanksgiving and joy.

Shabbos Parshat Zachor: This Shabbat we will be reading Parshat Zachor, which will be an oppor-tunity to fulfill the biblical commandment of Zechirat Amalek. This section is read as the maftir of the Torah reading and one should attempt to be in shul early enough to hear Parshat Zachor. As usual we will be having three minyanim Shabbat morning; the hashkamah minyan at 7:45am, the regular minyan at 9:00am and teen minyan at 10:00am. The following is the approx-imate time the various minyanim will be reading Parshat Zachor this coming Shabbat: Haskamah minyan at 8:30am, Main Sanctuary minyan at 10:15am and Teen minyan at 10:30am. If one is unable to be in shul for Parshat Zachor on Shabbat morning, according to the Magen Avraham (Shulchan Aruch OC:685:7), one can fulfill the biblical mitzvah of Zechirat Am-alek by hearing the Torah reading (Vayavo Amalek) at Shacharit on Purim morning Tuesday March 10th which is read a few minutes before we read the Megillah. We will have two shacharit minyanim on Purim morning, the first beginning at 6:10am and the second beginning at 8:00am. The Torah reading that morning (Tuesday, March 10th) will take place before the Megillah reading, at approximately 6:30am and at 8:20am respectively. In addition, the biblical obligation of hearing Parshat Zachor can be fulfilled in the sum-mer (August 29th) when we will read parshat Ki Tetze as part of the regular Torah reading cycle. As mentioned in an earlier email, the halachick mandate to avoid even a remote possibility of danger to ourselves or to others, overrides any obligation to hear Parshat Zachor. Consequently, anyone who is at a higher health risk regarding the COVID-19 virus, or is exhibiting symptoms or who falls into the category where self quarantine is being recommended by the CDC guidelines, should not come to shul for Parshat Zachor.
