This week I have had the opportunity to attend the annual Secondary Principals Conference in Manly. This conference bought together high school and central school Principals from across NSW for 3 days of professional learning and sharing. One session of particular interest focused on “Hot Topics” in schools currently across the state. In this discussion two themes strongly stood out. 1. Staffing in our schools – There is a recognised difficulty state wide in accessing appropriately trained and qualified teaching staff in some curriculum areas. At Concord, we are currently sharing some of these difficulties with repeated attempts to recruit staff in some subject areas, most notably Industrial Tech Timber and Construction. The result of this shortage is that some classes do not have regular access to practical lessons. Please be assured that we are working on looking at a range of innovative ways to overcome this shortage while still ensuring that student safety in practical learning spaces is maintained. 2. School and Community Relationships - Many Principals expressed concern around incidents that have occurred at their schools where relationships between the school and families had become aggressive and unproductive. There has also been multiple reports in the media over the past few months highlighting the complexity of relationships at times between school staff and the community. https://www.smh.com.au/national/the‐new‐school‐bullies‐aren‐t‐children‐they‐re‐parents‐20190416‐ p51ej1.html?js‐chunk‐not‐found‐refresh=true https://www.9now.com.au/60‐minutes/2019/extras/clips/clip‐cjuvsmt2x003r0gmv3hut3ub5 https://www.9now.com.au/60‐minutes/2019/extras/clips/clip‐cjv34pxgv00580gpeu3hta5o3 Email us your thoughts – concord‐[email protected] Regularly check school website www.concord‐h.schools.nsw.edu.au Follow us on twitter – twitter.com/concord_hs_nsw Principal’s Report Concord High School Keeping In Touch Respectful Responsible Achieving Term 2 Week 7

Schools are busy, unpredictable and imperfect places where things will go wrong from time to time and the best way forward may not always be commonly shared by all parties involved. These articles highlight the importance of us communicating early and clearly with each other and continuing to work together in a mutually respectful manner to address problems as they arise. The Senior Leadership Team at the school consisting of Jody Engisch, Craig Anderson, Danka Milinovic, Fiona Payne and myself are available to discuss your concerns at any time. Until next fortnight, Victor Newby Principal

Walanga Muru- Macquarie University. The Culture, Leadership and Scholarship program run by Macquarie University will resume next term. The program has six workshop sessions. We have planned two workshops in Term 2, Term 3 and Term 4. NRL Youth Advocacy program Congratulations to our NRL Youth Advocates who attend a workshop on Friday June 7 at NRL Headquarters at Moore Park. Nazir Hammoud, Cainan Talisitama, Vani Sorovi, Sione Mapapalangi attended with Ms Valele. Awesome day out at Rugby League Central for some of our NRL Youth Advocates as they took part in a Presentation Masterclass on Public Speaking facilitated by New Zealand - Australian actor Jay Laga’aia from Home & Away & Star Wars fame. Jays witty, fun & often hilarious approach to teaching made for a great learning environment. Ranging from speech delivery and singing improvisation the workshop challenged students to step out of their comfort zone and help give them a voice and build their confidence. “If you don’t invest in yourself, don’t expect others to invest in you either” Jay said in drawing parallels to performance & presentation on & off the stage. Thanks Jay for delivering a great workshop & students for investing in yourselves.

Sticks and Stones – Anti Bullying! On Wednesday 12th June Year 7 were lucky enough to see a visiting production called ‘Sticks and Stones’. This performance is Educational theatre that addresses bullying in schools and provides strategies for anger management, conflict resolution and breaking the cycle of violence. Two energetic young performers explore the different forms of bullying at school, in the street, at home and online. In the performance, we see that Toby is falling into destructive patterns of aggressive behaviour. When he meets Joe, he starts to understand how these behaviours have emerged, and develops strategies for conflict resolution, anger management, assertiveness, and breaking the cycle of violence. This award winning show shines a spotlight on negative patterns of behaviour that can develop through inappropriate modelling from peers, family members, TV and video games. It examines the link between hormones, the fight/flight response, aggression and violence. The hard hitting narrative is punctuated with circus skills to demonstrate co-operation and strategies for improving self-control through breath, focus and channelling energy into positive pursuits. WINNER of an Australian Violence Prevention Award. Seen and enjoyed by over 1.75 million students! The students in year 7 really enjoyed the performance and are grateful to the Concord High School P&C association who generously supported this activity.

the school. Tips for tackling kids head lice

Use hair conditioner and a fine head lice comb.

Apply conditioner to the hair and comb through with a wide-toothed

comb to remove the tangles.

Then use a fine metal lice comb to remove the lice and pull the

nits off the hair.

The conditioner helps slow down the louse and makes it easier to

comb out.
