“Intelligent Kitchens”: the intelligent kitchen for more convenienceA kitchen can be a lot of things: modern or traditional, functional or homely, opulent or plain. But one thing it should be: intelligent.

In other words: A kitchen should be well thought-through and perfectly organised. In an intelligent kitchen, you can save a lot of time and work while cooking and doing other jobs. You can make optimum use of available storage space and keep everything in easy reach. And you can look after your health.

The three key aspectsWhen planning and buying a new kitchen, pay attention to these three aspects in particular:

• short distances• ergonomics• cleverly organised cabinet interiors

Hettich, the specialist in innovative hardware, provides valuable ideas and suggestions for intelligent kitchen planning in its “Intelligent Kitchens” guide.

Short distancesThe “Intelligent Kitchens” guide organises a kitchen into five functional areas. Planning a kitchen on the basis of this concept provides a host of benefits: Going about your everyday work in the kitchen, you benefit from short dis-tances and efficient, ergonomic work flows.

Working the healthy, ergonomic way“Intelligent Kitchens” helps you to organise your kitchen in a way that makes ergonomic sense. That takes the burden off you and is good for your health. This includes a worktop height matched to the individual just as it does

the clever use of storage space. Practical pull-outs for wall and base units work wonders.

Everything in its placeA well-organised kitchen is more of a pleasure and less stressful to work in. Keep the important things where they’re needed. Use intelligent organisational solutions for drawers and pull-outs. This way, you can store your provisions and utensils efficiently and conveniently.

This is how to get your kitchen right

What does your dream kitchen look like? What kitchen shape do you prefer? Whatever you go for – it’s worthwhile planning a kitchen’s prac-tical aspects carefully. Organising it into five, logically arranged activity areas will noticeably take the effort out of routine kitchen work. With short distances, smooth workflows and less physical exertion.

How can you make the “Intelligent Kitchens” concept work for your shape of kitchen? The diagrams below show you.

Galley kitchen U-shaped kitchen

Island kitchen

L-shaped kitchen One-counter kitchen

Every kitchen layout is different because it has to follow the space situation. But whether galley, L-shape or island – any shape can be configured and built intelligently.

The intelligence test for your kitchen:This check-list shows you just how logically “Intelligent Kitchens” works. And how intelligent is your kitchen? Do the test.

Layout Benefit Food directly next to the hob > in easy reach Pots and pans directly next to the hob > in easy reach Pots and pans directly next to the dishwasher > quickly loaded Dishes and cutlery directly next to the dishwasher > quickly loaded Waste bin directly next to / under the sink > easy disposal of kitchen waste Cleaning products directly next to / under the sink > in easy reach Dishes and cutlery near the dining table > table quickly set

The five functional areas are one of the key principles behind “Intelligent Kitchens”: You should always keep dishes, food etc. closely together in the clearly defined kitchen zone. This avoids hav-ing to walk unnecessary distances and saves the bother of searching.

Every individual places his or her own particular demands and expectations on a kitchen. Not only in terms of design. The right functionality makes the kitchen a personal “feel-good” zone too. Preferences are also a matter of mentality. Do you know what kitchen type you are? You can find out by doing our little test.

We have put together six questions for you. For each question, choose the answer that fits you best. Each answer is followed by a letter in brackets. Once you have answered all ques-tions, see which letter you chose most.

The letters are explained on the next double-page spread. If your answers are not domi-nated by any particular letter, you are a multi-facetted individual who combines the traits of several types. This can also be reflected in your kitchen!

There’s a long queue at the supermarket. How do you react?

Good opportunity to text a couple of people ... (B) I join the queue and take a look at what the other people have bought. (A) No way! I park my trolley in an aisle and go home without buying anything. (D) I look for a friendly-looking customer in the queue and, giving some excuse, ask whether I can go first. (C)

You come out of a fashion store to discover it’s raining. What do you do?

I go back into the shop and continue looking around. It might soon stop. (A) What’s a little rain! I pull my collar up and walk home. (D) I buy an umbrella in the drugstore next door. (B) I get a cab home. (C)

My new wardrobe ...

... should be fitted out with as many practical features as possible. (A) ... has a garment rail and three compartments. That’s all I need. (B) ... must, above all, look good. A piece of furniture as big as this should appeal in the design stakes too. (C) ... will definitely need to be big enough. When I think of everything that’s got to go in it! (D)

(at least 3 answers with the letter B)

It’s not easy to get you ruffled. In your life, you’ve overcome many a hurdle and that’s why you know: things are never as bad as they seem. And when you’re cooking: nothing’s more impor-tant than convenience and being relaxed in the kitchen either. Because you’re in control, you get it right the first time.

Your relaxed manner is contagious, that’s why people like your company. But that’s not all: For many of your fellow human beings, you’re a tower of strength. Because you’re not easily stressed, you appreciate the pleasant things in life with all your senses. That also includes cook-ing and enjoying food.

(at least 3 answers with the letter A)

You want everything you do to be as perfect as possible. This means: impeccably tidy organisa-tion. When you set to work in your kitchen, every-thing’s got to be in its place. It almost drives you mad if you have to spend time looking for something. The same goes if you’ve misplaced something – but that can’t happen to you!

Appointments, holiday plans, organisation at home – you’ve got everything under control. You do everything else properly too: At work, in finan-cial matters, in contact with other people. There are only a few situations in which you’re not in control. What are they? That, of course, remains your secret.

(at least 3 answers with the letter C)

Falling in line – that’s not your thing. You like being unconventional, one of a kind. For you, individuality is an expression of personal freedom and living life the way you want to. You like to wear fashionable, trendy clothes ... but never mainstream! Your kitchen also communicates your passion for good design and sophisticated style.

And you certainly don’t want to attract atten-tion at any price. But you do like to cultivate a somewhat unmistakable identity. You look for the unusual – and are prepared to pay a little more for something special.

(at least 3 answers with the letter D)

Sometimes you don’t have a plan – and enjoy every second of it. Must life be organised all the time? It’s not only hard work, it’s also boring. When everything’s predictable! You prefer to take life’s little surprises.

Spontaneity is your passion and life principle. Carefree and uncomplicated – that’s also true of your friends who happily turn a blind eye to the occasional chaos you get yourself into. But every now and again, you also need your space: That’s when you make yourself at home and enjoy a snack in the kitchen – needless to say, on the spur of the moment.

Organiser: Every utensil has a place of its own with the OrgaStore Premium drawer organisa-tion system that can be adjusted to suit any need.

Steadfast: The OrgaFlag drawer interior organiser can be positioned anywhere you choose and keeps tall stacks of plates in their place.

“My home is a valuable haven in my life”. I have a very hectic day, and look forward to peace and tidiness when I get home. Logical structure and clever organisation are important to me, particularly in the kitchen. Cooking is far more of a pleasure when all ingredients and utensils have a proper place and are easy to reach.

I had my kitchen planned and fitted out in line with the “Intelligent Kitchens” concept. Its clev-er organisation into five functional areas and the intelligent organisation of cabinet interiors are a real boon in everyday kitchen routine. I am particularly thrilled with the convenient pot-and-pan drawers: At last, I can get at every-thing easily. No involuntary gymnastics any more! The perfect-fit inserts for cans and other provisions are absolutely great. Nothing can wobble, clatter or topple over because every item is perfectly stowed away. Even stacks of plates can’t slide about. For me, the larder unit is a veritable storage miracle. It’s amazing what I can put away in it. And everything is in easy reach and quick to hand.

The ingenious way in which cabinets and draw-ers are organised make easy work of keeping the kitchen clean and tidy. When everything looks so neat – that’s what I really love.”

“The ultimate relaxation for me is when I’ve got time to cook something special. It’s a bit like going on a journey: You look forward to arriving at your destination but getting there is an experience too. And that’s how I celebrate preparing food.

To make cooking really relaxing, I’ve had a cou-ple of clever functions fitted. For instance, the waste pull-out opens with power assistance: A light press on the front, and the pull-out opens all by itself. A real help when you’ve got both hands full. Hettich’s Cosario is another fantastic invention - I can keep all my spices in a minimum of space and they’re always to

"My kitchen is astress-free zone.”

Convenience in top form: Provi-sions are easy to reach even in the furthest corner of the wall unit.

No hand free? Not a problem – with Easys: A mere press of the knee is all it takes and the pull-out opens gently and quietly.

Spices immediately to hand: The exceptional Cosario uses storage space below the wall unit. Where they are always in easy reach and quickly put away again.

What I like in particular:

The individualistAesthetic looks play an important part throughout my home. That naturally goes for the kitchen too. There’s no other part of the home I go into more often during the course of a day. And where I cook and also often eat – that’s where the atmosphere’s got to be right.

Above all, my kitchen oozes individuality - that’s something that gives me real pleasure. I have gone for handleless fronts with the Easys electromechanical opening system because they give the kitchen a beautiful purist look. A brief press on the front, and the pull-out glides

Chic purist design then carries on to the inside – with chrome profiles as well as DesignSides in glass. It’s details like these that give a kitchen something like personality. I find that important.

What I like in particular:

• Chatting with friends on-line• Suits and jackets from Italian designers• Cool music, particularly Modern Jazz• New York City• Trendy galleries• Finding out what the best cafés and bars are in town

"Design is more than just surface-deep."

The spontaneous type

Surprise effect: On opening, the OrgaWing’s side compartments swing out automatically. Ideal for small utensils.

I think it’s a real shame there are only 24 hours in a day. There’s so much I’d like to do and see. But often there’s not enough time, I’m simply up to my ears in work. What that’s got to do with my kitchen? Oh, quite a lot. Because this is where everything needs to be done quicklyand easily. I love it uncomplicated in my kitchen too.

Fortunately, there are plenty of little helpers in my kitchen. You can’t see them because they’re hidden away behind the fronts – in the units and drawers. Lots of small compartments and containers that I can even keep my bits and bobs in – and easily put my hand on whenever I need to.

In particular, I like the OrgaWing from Hettich, that’s something that really does have to be seen: The drawer opens, and everything inside spreads out before my very eyes. That makes the kitchen a fun place even for me!

Kitchens across the globeIn many families it’s the hub of the home and has become a showpiece in recent years. It needs to be efficient, practi-cal and well struc-tured: the kitchen!

RussiaThe kitchen is the most important place in Russian homes where the whole family gets together in the evening to relax after a tiring day, catch up on the latest, invite friends or simply spend some quality time together. The kitchen is clearly the heart of the Russian home.Over the last decade, there has been a strong trend towards combining the kitchen with the

and living-room, it is important to remem-ber that many Russians live in small flats that were built in the sixties and seventies. The most important factor in planning compact kitchens is space economy. Kitchens in the classic or modern style are favoured the most: many prefer light accessories, shiny surfaces and expensive decorative elements.

living-room. With this type of layout, the kitchen can be enlarged, creating more open space and providing added comfort and convenience. This is achieved by removing the wall between the kitchen and an adjacent room giving more space, hence creating a living area where people can eat, drink and relax and spend quality time together. Despite the trend towards combining the kitchen

ChinaCompared with European kitchens, kitchens in Chinese homes are small. This means kitchen design tends to be more practical than design-focused. The kitchen is for cooking in and not so much the place where the family meets.

concepts are only rarely integrated into Chinese kitchen design. Although the worktop is lower than in Europe, kitchen design is similar. There is a difference in the material and colour of the worktops. They often have an engineered quartz surface. The galley and L-kitchen shapes are used most whereas the U-shape is less common.

The trend towards integrating electrical appli-ances into kitchens has only emerged in recent years - before they mostly stood separately. An oven is rarely used in Chinese kitchens, there-fore a dish-steriliser is always part of a standard Chinese kitchen.

Traditional Chinese cooking is deeply rooted in everyday life. With the exception of a few cold food items, the Chinese have a hot meal as their main food intake during the day. The three most commonly used cooking techniques in Chinese food are deep frying, steaming and stir frying, therefore an extractor hood is always fitted over the hob that is positioned near the window. This determines the way the kitchen is designed. Most Chinese kitchens are areas separated off near the dining room. But open-plan kitchens are also becoming more and more popular with young families. Chinese kitchens have no large pantry unit, and practical storage

USA Today’s American kitchen is spacious and luxu-rious, forming the home’s social hub. It not only serves as a place for preparing meals, it’s also a status symbol and designed for social interac-tion. The way the kitchen is equipped is one of the factors that determines the market value of a house. Kitchens are so lavishly equipped that they also have what it takes to prepare meals for large numbers of people when the family gets together for Thanksgiving or for parties with neighbours and friends. The kitchen market continues to be dominated by the traditional style. In the USA, cabinets and drawers are custom-made in “face-frame” design, in other words with a frame fixed to the front of the cabinet carcase. This concept is far removed from the standardised steel drawers and frame-less cabinets in Europe. Frontage colours range from very light to very dark wood. American kitchens differ from European kitchens in terms of appliances and furnishing:

the worktop is mostly made of granite. Wooden drawers and glass-fronted cabinets are part of the modern kitchen outfit. Many kitchens have two ovens, a warming drawer, large, double-door, free-standing refrigerators with ice-maker and water dispenser and an air-conditioned wine cabinet. In today’s kitchen design, a cook-ing island is a must. And it shouldn’t be without an office corner for the housewife and a walk-in larder either. Popular at the moment are outdoor kitchens where the patio is turned into an “open-air” kitchen for the summer.

Page 27: Kitchens across the globe · Modern kitchens organised to suit personal needs help to improve the quality of life. An important element in the kitchen is the drawer because it also

JapanSmall flats and houses are typical of Japan. This is why storage space is very important in the kitchen and there are many solutions for making optimum use of existing space. Floor-to-ceiling units provide plenty of storage options. Wall units can often be lowered and raised easily to make their contents easy to reach. Even the front of drawers are used as storage space with what’s known as a “pocket front”. Equally typical of Japanese kitchens are free-standing pantry units with sliding doors.

Products, such as a fish grill, a spice box, a rice box and an easy-to-clean extractor hood, are found in Japanese

kitchens. Apart from the extractor hood, all other surfaces should be easy to clean because much fare is fried in fat.

The Japanese favour galley and I-shaped kitch-ens with an island unit in standardised dimen-sions. At one time, the mother would cook in the kitchen on her own while the family waited in another room. Nowadays, though, cooking is done with the children or the whole family. On average, the Japanese spend one and a half hours a day in their kitchens.

TurkeyIn Turkish kitchens, pillars are often used as space dividers which means custom-made fur-niture is fitted. Typically European appliances and products are used in kitchens, and there are no particular demands on kitchen construction. In cities like Istanbul the average home has 90 square meters of floor space so kitchens are on the small side and only used for storing and preparing food.

In Turkey’s southern regions, such as Adana, homes are an average of 150 square metres in size and the kitchen doubles up as a living and dining room. Traditionally, it is only used for cooking, with meals being eaten in the living room.

Kitchens from the high-end segment have lacquered surfaces and solid doors. Dishes are prepared on stone worktops. Laminate or PVC doors determine the design of mid-range kitch-ens. Although the worktop is usually made of laminate, stone is being used more and more. A kitchen remains in use for about 15 years. Turkey manufactures around 800,000 kitchens a year.

FranceEven just a few years ago, the notion of a French kitchen was associated with a country-style image: it had to be rural, rustic and Pro-vençal. That’s less true today.

These days, a style influenced by Italian and German design predominates. Nevertheless, there are still numerous manufacturers that offer traditional kitchens made of solid wood. These are inspired by the so-called American kitchen that opens up to the living room. Many French people have classic furniture, such as a sideboard, a crockery cupboard as well as various storage units combined with a fitted kitchen.

The average life of a kitchen in France is 17 years. It needs to be practical and homely because it is also used as living space. Impor-tance is attached to space for keeping gas bottles because cooking is done by gas. Space

is also needed for a large waste bin and a container for organic waste. A particular feature is the typical place for keeping bread: one in two kitch-ens are fitted with a special drawer for bread and bottles, a so-called “pain bouteille”.

AustraliaA large part of the Australian lifestyle is living, eating and entertaining outdoors. Some homes include full outdoor kitchens – complete with sink, storage, refrigerators, pizza ovens and barbecues. The goal has been to facilitate the movement between indoors and outdoors to allow this to happen seamlessly. Many indoor kitchens incorporate bi-fold doors to allow food and guests to segue between outdoors and in with little effort.

If you are designing an outdoor kitchen area at the same time as the indoor kitchen, consider matching surfaces to merge the two environ-ments or blur the lines between the two, pro-viding a seamless flow between internal and external living spaces. Worktops in natural stone are very popular to give outdoor kitchens a natural yet exceptional look as well as a long life.
