Mahmooooo’s Message

Mothers Day is just around the corner. We wish all Moms out there a very Happy Mothers Day. It is often said, we are a reflection of our parents and their values. Its their early influence which molds us into who we become as adults. Both parents play an important role in our upbringing, but in most cases it is the mothers, who influ-ence us the most From early on in our lives, we develop a very spe-cial bond, and a very special rela-tionship with them. This usually holds true even when we reach adulthood, and continues beyond.

Moms can always tell, when some-thing is bothering us, they are al-ways there to listen to us, they know how to ease our anxieties, they know how to make us relax, and put a smile back on our faces. No matter what, they are always there for us. As we grow older, we tend to get busy with our carriers, our lives, our kids, and find our-selves so caught up with our own lives that we find it hard to devote as much of our attention to our parents as we would like to. Moth-ers Day, and Fathers Day, provide us with the opportunity to make the time, and acknowledge every-thing our parents have done for us, and continue to do for us. Even though everyday is, as it should be, Mothers/Fathers Day, and we should make an effort eve-ryday to visit, or call our parents,

lets make this Mothers Day a very special day for our moms. Our moms have unconditional love for us, they put everything aside when we need them, lets do the same for them. We can always look at this Mothers Day, as a starting point to continue making everyday of their lives special, lets be there for them, just as they have been there for us, and continue to do so. The best way to start any day, might just be to call our moms and simply telling them, "I love you".

El Presidente was late ar-riving for the meeting again. Someone needs to fine this guy! Oh! But he has the “No Fines Badge”. President Elect Victoria Davidson, called the meeting to order at 7:05 AM, and got things mov-ing. Anna Wu led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Izzeldin Osman led the patriotic song. Charlie Huff delivered his signature short and sweet invoca-tion. Club members in attendance were Dave W, Charlie Huff, Izzey Osman, Kathy Young, Grace Chan, Jim Stewart, David Mal-kin, Victoria Davidson, Lon

Salgren, Anna Wu, and Gino Kwok. David Malkin introduced our guest Syl-via Padilla, and Dave Wal-lach led us in the singing of our “Welcome Song”. There were no birthdays and anniversaries this week, but Sylvia men-tioned that she just cele-brated her birthday on the 7th, so we sang Happy Birthday to her, Victoria led the song. Grace Chan sold the “Split the Pot” tickets. Our guest Sylvia pulled the winning ticket and Lon (Yes again!) was the winner taking home a whopping $90 Kiwanis dollar ($9). He in the true

Kiwanis spirit generously donated the winnings to “Friends of the Heart”. Lon checked for pins and badg-es, and collected food cans for Del Haven. Kathy cir-culated the donation cans. We collected $2.00 for Relay for Life, $4.00 for Children’s Hospital, and $4.00 for ELIMINATE. A total of $32.00 was con-tributed by generous members for Happy/Sad dollars. Kathy was our “Mrs. K”; everyone was reported to be friendly. The “No Fines Badge” which had been collecting dust for the past month in El Presidente’s possession,

was up for grabs. Dave W started the bid at $5.00, which soon turned into bidding frenzy between Anna and Kathy. Kathy was the ultimate high bid-der taking the badge home for $35.00. Thank You Anna & Kathy for the spir-ited bidding, and making this once a month ritual entertaining and exciting! Happy & Sad Dollars

Happy & Sad Dollars 4/30/2013 Charlie – Had nothing to say, happy to pass the basket on to Grace Grace – Happy and Sad at the same time because yes-terday she tried to get Wi-Fi connected to her printer through her Router because she wants to be able to print from her I-Phone. Sad to find out that her printer doesn’t have this feature. Izzey – Happy for no reason. I guess just for being here and for all the help last Saturday, with Del Haven Beau-tification Day. David M – Sad because he found out that someone stole his checking account number and had checks made with his name. Checks were being passed around Orange County. Had to close out checking account and open another one. Happy because Bank of America Fraud Dept. is available 24/7 and they were so helpful. Police came out to his house to take a report. Anna W – Happy because there has been a lot of re-sponse to the Kiwaniscope and she is really surprised. Thanks to everyone who have helped and have gotten involved with writing stories for the Kiwaniscope. It is really appreciated. Jim – Happy because Jean and him had a nice Anniver-sary Dinner last evening. Their house is up for sale and this weekend they will be going to Monterey and then up to the Bay Area. They will be house hunting in that area also. Victoria – Happy and Sad because she missed the Bas-ket assembly at Tina’s last evening but happy that Nicholas is in the Gate Program at Newton Middle School and is doing well. Last night she went to a Rosary for Chuck’s Mother.

Gino – Happy to see Izzey. This year in the District has been a transforming year. So much is happening. So many different new programs are being implemented in the District. He will be attending about 20 Advance-ments this month. It will be a very busy month for him. Also happy that Kathy was honored with The Distin-guished Woman of the Year Award through Assembly-man Ian Calderon’s Office. Gino nominated her and she was honored. Lon – Happy because we were able to do the clean-up at Del Haven. There may have only been 3 Kiwanians there but there were Rotarians and Lions. A lot was accomplished in a short time. We all worked well to-gether. He was finally able to make it to Knott’s Berry Farm after not going for some months. Sylvia – Happy to be here. Dave W – Happy that Sylvia is here and for all the fan-tastic work she does in the Community. Happy-Our Youth are turning in their Scholarship Appli-cations on time. They have so many innovative ways to get him their applications. They are left on his bench in the front yard of his home, left in his mail box, on his car. You name it, they get it to him. Happy that Ribfest is coming to a close. Sad, he has been having a problem with his ears again. He will be going back to Kaiser to-day. Mahmood – Happy to have Sylvia Padilla here. The deadline for the Ribfest program is today so get your information to Lon. Sad because Division 15 LTG Elect has passed away and sorry to hear about Chuck’s Mom passing. Story by David Malkin Our speaker this week was no stranger to our Kiwanis Club. Sylvia Paddila, founder and CEO or Friends of the Heart, and a former Hacienda Heights Kiwa-nis Club member, made her annual visit this week. Friends of the Heart is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization developed in 2001. After recognizing the hardship on children when being placed into foster homes, Sylvia Paddila developed a program to make sure that children enter-ing a foster home will receive a new duffel bag filled with age-appropriate gifts. Children are often taken from their homes under traumatic situations allowing them no time to gather personal belongings. If time is allowed, a trash bag is given to the child to place their belongings into. The "Duffel Bags For Kids Program" has proven to be a beneficial aspect with the transition of the child who is entering into a new foster home. The gift of the duffel bag allows the child to feel special and gives them a much-needed sense of confidence. Children are often removed from their homes due to extreme abuse, neglect, or a parent who has a substance abuse problem. This time in a child's life is very difficult and extremely painful. Friends of the Heart is trying to make a difference in the children's lives by showing them that they are cared for and loved. Testimonials reflect the difference in a child when they receive the gift of a new blue duffel bag. Even though their happiness may be temporary, the memory of being cared for will last forever. Each bag is customized for the child by age and gender. The gifts include toiletries, blankets, clothing, toys, books, school supplies, per-sonal teen items, and other age-appropriate gifts. With the help of other community groups and citizens, they have had the opportunity to help hundreds of children who were in need of our service. Friends of the Heart serve the Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Sylvia states, “Children are

the future. Let's join together and make a difference!” WHO DO THEY HELP? Children of all ethnicity - newborn babies to 18 years of age. THEIR MISSION STATEMENT Friends of the Heart is committed to the betterment of the com-munity by assisting children and families transition from de-pendency to independence. We are committed to the preserva-tion of the family by identifying the needs of the children and families within the communities. We serve and are working to-wards accessing and delivering the resources to meet those needs. (Continue on Page 7)

THE PROGRAM A Social Worker Supervisor contacts Friends of the Heart when a child is ready to be placed in their new home. They then customize a duffel bag for the child by age and gender. The bags are made specifically for the child to feel special and fell proud. The duffel bags are the delivered to the Social Worker or the Police Station and then given to the child. AGENCIES SERVED Friends of the Heart currently volunteers with several Foster Care Agencies, Glendora and the El Monte Police Department, and School Districts. STAFF Friends of the Heart is operated by volunteers. DONATIONS Private donations, matching grants, fund-raisers, in-kind gifts and the family support the program. Each completed duffel bag may cost $50-$65. Ideas for dona-tions include: Duffel bags, baby bags & necessities, lunch bags, school supplies, toiletries (shampoo, tooth-brush, etc.), toys (Barbie Doll's, Hot Wheels, Board Games, Playing Cards, Action Figures, etc.), Summer/

Winter clothing, pajamas, socks, slippers, undergar-ments, calculators, stationery, jewelry boxes, basket-balls, footballs, blankets, and Wal-Mart gift cards. Checks made payable to Friends of the Heart are also accepted. HOW YOU CAN HELP Donations are needed year-round to support the pro-gram. I guess it could be said our Club had another successful Ribfest. I don’t know about anyone else, but I have to say that I’m glad it is in the History Books. Until you actually participate and are a member of the planning committee, you have no idea what it takes to put on an event like this. A Hugh THANK YOU to Mahmood and Nancy for securing items for the Live Auction and the many times you ate out and had the donation letter with you and just asked if the restaurant would give a donation. There was a lot of sacrificing going on there. I personally want to thank all the members who participated, donated their time to set up, run errands, take down and helped out with every aspect of the behind the scenes. From baking potatoes, shucking the corn, putting baskets together, delivery of said baskets the day of the event and the many hours of your time away from your families. Thank you just doesn’t seem enough, but you know that it comes from my heart when I say THANKS A MILLION!!!!!!!! You know who you are so please give yourselves a pat on the back. To all the spouses for the many dinners missed with your Kiwanian while he or she was at yet another meeting, I want to give a BIG THANK YOU AS WELL. I know this year I wasn’t available for set up and to make sure that everything ran smoothly and I am sorry for that. But I think checkout was a lot more organized this year because of all the help from K-Members and our family members. It takes many, many hands to accomplish all that we do and last night was no exception. I just wish I had been able to socialize more with all the invited guests. A lot of nice people were in attendance and maybe next year, I will make it my mission to say HI to everyone. Enough rambling, I just want to say “THANK YOU AGAIN TO ALL!!!!!!”. Next year is Kiwanis 100th year anniversary, as we celebrate the history of Kiwanis, it’s also important to recognize the history of our members. Our club has been around for 50 years and many of our members have shared in our clubs milestones. To celebrate our 100th year anniversary, we will have profiles of our long standing members here.

This week: Charles A. Huff, P.E. Charles A. Huff is an Industrial Engineer engaged in operational performance improvement for under-performing and developing businesses. Mr. Huff is the Principal-Owner of C. A. Huff & Associates, a regional Industrial Engineering firm. Areas of special-ty include facility planning & design, operations analysis & control and productivity improvement. Clients include NASA-Jet Propulsion Laboratory, ITT, Ameron, Avery Label, California Steel Industries, Tropitone Furniture and Callaway Golf. Mr. Huff possesses a total of thirty-five years of progressive engineering and operations management experience. Prior to establishing C.A. Huff & Associates in 1981, he consulted for the firm of Booz, Allen & Hamilton and prac-ticed at General Dynamics, Fairchild Semiconductor and Cummins Engine Company. Charlie is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley with a BS degree in Industrial Engineering. He has successfully completed post-graduate level programs leading to masters degrees in both Industrial Engineering and Business Administration. He is registered as a Professional Engineer (Industrial) in the State of California and is an Affiliate Member of the American Industrial Real Estate Association (AIR). About His Time in Kiwanis After completing terms as Club President in 1994 and as Lt. Governor in 1996, Governor Reid Allen invited me to serve on his team as our district’s new club building chairman. Since then, it has been my privilege to serve eve-ry Cal-Nev-Ha governor, usually in a membership development capacity. During the same period, a total of 70 new clubs have been organized and our district has achieved distinguished status in 2 out of every 3 years. For these past 3 years, it has also been my pleasure to serve on the Kiwanis International New Club Building committee. As such, I have enjoyed a first name rela-tionship with International Presidents Nettles, Bo, Brian and Bob along with several International Trustees. Walnut Valley Interclub - May 2, 2014

By Grace Chan Despite the heat wave, the spirit of the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis remains high. This morning Mahmood, David Malkin, David Wallach, Lon, and Grace attended the Wal-nut Valley breakfast meeting at Bob’s Big Boy Restaurant at Diamond Bar. Don Nettles, president of the club called the meeting at 7:00AM. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and fol-lowed by introduction of guests by Mahmood. Today’s meeting is the last one of President Nettles. He is going to move out of California to Albuquerque next Friday. The Kiwanis Club of Walnut Valley will hold their 46th An-nual Student Awards Ceremony “The Chapman Awards” on

Monday, May 5, 2014 7:00PM at Walnut High School Performing Art Center. Awards and scholar-ships will be presented to the top students from Rowland & Walnut Valley Unified School Districts, and Diamond Ranch High School of the Pomona Unified School District. Mahmood talked about the Ribfest dinner on Sunday, May 4. The enthusiasm and support from Wal-nut Valley Club was overwhelming. We sold 40 opportunity tickets that translated to $80.00 sales in a flash of lightning. “GOOD JOB, MAHMOOD, KEEP UP WITH YOUR SALES PITCH!!”

By Mahmood Bashir Another year, another Ribfest. Sunday night was for sure an enjoyable one for all in attendance. The atmos-phere was festive, the food was awesome, the moods were friendly, it was an evening of camaraderie, show of generosity, and the best part our communities and our K-Family rather our "Ohana" came together for the common good. It is moments like this, when we shine the most as an organization, when we display the very essence of who we are, and what we are all about. A huge THANK YOU, a very LOUD SHOUT-OUT to all who supported the effort, not just our club members and our SLP, but individuals, many groups and organizations in our communities without whose support it would be a bit more challenging for us to provide the scholar-ships and the service we strive to provide. Lets make it a point to say thank you to all of them, every chance we get, lets build those bonds which are so very essential. We also have so many of our members and our SLP to thank as well. If we attempt to list them all, we would fill this page with names alone. We say thank you to all. It was truly a team effort, starting at 7 in the morning, and ending the day at 10:30 PM. We could not have done this, and done this so efficiently without your dedi-cation to serve, your generous sacrifice of time, energy and money. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! The evening had all the elements we are so accustomed to. One moment which stands out, and probably will for some time to come, was Robbie Britt's rendition of "Proud to be an American". It was a great moment, a sea of people, all standing straight and proud, totally immersed in the very emotional, very expressive perfor-mance. The applause was tremendous, Robbie most certainly got the patriotic juices flowing, making us all proud to be Americans. The day had its glitches, but we adapted, we overcame, we pulled it all together. Each year we improve, based on the feedback you provide. Please let us hear from you, what you thought, what your guests thought. There is always room for improvement, and we always try to do our best. We are a volunteer organization, our per-formance is always enhanced when most of our members get involved and help us improve. If your work and family commitments kept you from helping out, just keep in mind, there is always the next event, and this event will certainly be back next year. Are you looking forward to next years Ribfest ? I know I am!

New Member Bio Get to know our new members!! Read all about it here!! Sharon Suzanne Butler was inducted into Kiwanis on September 25th, 2013. Here is the interview with Sharon.

Back in the early 1980’s, Sharon first learned of the Kiwanis Clubs. Speaking as a representative for the National Coffee Service Association, Sharon traveled all over Southern California educating service groups about “Coffee”! Wow, over 33 years later, Dave and Terry met Sharon at the Farmers Market at Mount Sac. Sharon was working at the Forest Lawn Memorial Parks and Mortuary information table. Sharon stated, “The main reason I joined Kiwanis was the club I visited”! “The members of this club are amazing; they are truly out to help their community!” I have always felt I wanted to volunteer in my community, lending a helping hand where it is needed. Since I have been a member of the club, I really have not been able to help as much as I have wanted too. Just months into becoming a member I strained my back lifting my computer bag. This minor injury turned out to be a herni-ated disk. My favorite part of the Kiwanis club is volunteering to chaperone. Sharon’s parents reside in Yorba Linda, California. Arlene and Rich are in their early eighties and still take care of Sharon’s younger brother Rick, who was in a major car accident when he was fourteen year old. Sharon younger Brother Rick is her only brother, and Sharlene is Sharon’s older sister. Although completely disabled Rick runs a small business which Arlene works as the receptionist to kill time while Rick runs the office. The family has nearly always worked together, so when Sharon came up with an idea to raise funds for a care of spinal injuries, Arlene took off with it! The Spinal Cord Charity Golf Classic has been running for 14 years raising over $100,000! Sharon had learned how to run golf tournaments from volunteering for the Rotary club when she was Mrs. California. Sharon lives with her 21 year old son Blake and their two dogs, Mika and Willy. Blake is self employed as a handyman renovating homes. It was when Sharon and Blake were featured in an HGTV show, “Professional Grade” that Sharon realized Blake’s talent to remodel! Mika is a mutt and Willy is a Pittbull-Terrier. Sharon is engaged to Evan Helseth, with plans of an October Wedding. Hobbies, who has time for hobbies? My work is my passion, because I know I am helping families! My position with Forest Lawn Memorial Parks and Mortuary gives me the opportunity to meet with families who know the importance of advance planning. Planning ahead is the most loving thing you can do for the people you will be leaving behind. In many cases, most people I talk to have tons of questions. I am able to answer all my clients’ questions while they and their family are healthy, happy and living life. (Continue on Page 13)

New Member Bio - Sharon Butler I meet with people of all ages who understand the costs of services and property has never gone down, only up! Planning ahead saves the frustration a family has at the most difficult time of their lives. Prior to working at Forest Lawn, I worked with my family at a small mortgage company we started in 1989. When the Big banks could not compete with the small mortgage bankers, well…they put them out of business! At the time on the mortgage banking crash, many loan officers did what they did best, sales. Reinventing myself fast was necessary to support myself and my son so, I started flipping homes. Before flipping homes, I took time to write a book called, “ Save it or Sell it” where I teach homeowners how to hold onto their homes! You could say, with all the licensing I have to have, I can take you from…. “your first home to your last!” A sense of humor is some-times needed in my line of work!

22nd annual Parents Place Fair & Festival

By Maxson Yang , Events Coordinator— South Hills High School Key Club Ecstatic! That’s the first word I would use to describe the Parents Place Fair & Festival to anybody who’s wonder-ing! Key Clubbers, around 39 in total from Division 35 attended this amazing event to raise awareness for chil-dren with a wide variety of special needs and I am truly glad that I was able to play a part in this. Set-up early on was pretty hilarious, a good number of key clubbers chose to help out with balloons by the time I got to the event and let me warn everyone: do NOT let Division 35 help out with balloons! Seriously, I don’t know if it was be-cause everyone greased their hands or something but there were probably more balloons in the trees than there were in the entire event! Sometime during set-up I got stuck with running the balloons to the booths and man-aged to get six balloons tangled together (took about a good half hour to get them untangled), so Division 35 and balloons, not a good pair. Once the event got going, I stopped by the snow cone stand where Mr. Bashir gave an absolutely rousing display of Key Club spirit that would have put every other member to shame considering just how awesome his cheer is (if you haven’t seen it you MUST). I bounced around a few jobs since people were still settling in, everything was basically filled and the volunteers were particularly efficient about getting stuff done. I ended up finding myself helping out with caterers and I would describe this experience as potato chip nightmare

since it’s the most accurate description I could possibly give. Now don’t get me wrong here, it was an amazing experience and I got to bond with so many people while we prepared food, but there were just way too many chips, like WAY too many. It was literally tray after tray of potato chips that needed to be filled at a pace where I would say is quite insane to keep up with. Though I’m not too particularly fond of potato chips anymore, the or-deal was an amazing way for me to bond with my friends since we had to push each other through the whole event. This entire event was an amazing experience overall however, just being able to take part in raising aware-ness for children with special needs, and seeing them enjoy themselves at the fair, simply priceless. Most of our members started with the set-up at around 7:00 AM, and most stayed till the end finishing the day at around 7:00 PM. And mind you this was following an amazing attendance the day before, by many of the same mem-bers also attended the March for Babies event in LA. Why you may ask we do this, because “Caring is our way of life”

22nd annual Information Fair and Festival

By Mahmood Bashir On Sunday, April 28 Parents Place Family Resource Center hosted their 22nd annual Information Fair and Festival at Cortez Park in West Covina. Cindy Cheng, a Family Support Specialist who represents the organization was in attendance at our Special Guest Day as Ray Jan's guest. Cindy had requested our help prior to attending our Spe-cial a Guest Day with the volunteer effort for the fair. She made the same request again when she visited us. We requested our D35 Key Club LTG's for help. They responded, and had around 39 volunteers to help from 7:00 AM to almost 7:00 PM. This was one of the most well organized, informative event I have attended in a long time. There were all kinds if resources, and support groups available for families. There were plenty of fun activities for children and adults alike. The best part everything was free, including lunch for all attendees. There were a few familiar faces there. Our very own Ray Jan had a booth for PACE- Energy Savings Project and Mark Chen manned the DFSY booth. This is definitely an event our club should get involved with in the future. Perhaps we can have a booth there next year, handing out information regarding Kiwanis and our clubs programs for children.

March of Dimes—March for Babies

By Mahmood Bashir On Saturday, April 26 our Key Clubs from D35W and D35E participated in March for Babies, at Exposi-tion Park in the beautiful USC campus. We met up at Los Altos for the bus ride over to the event. The bus was provided by Supervisor Knabe's office. Around 45 of us arrived at the event registered, and turned in the money raised to support March of Dimes whose event it was. Our two divisions between them donated $1000.00 to the cause. Great job kids, you make us proud. One of the speakers for the event was our own Supervisor Knabe. Also at hand to kick off the walk was Hillary Duff, who following a brief speech led around 16000 walkers on a 5K walk. Once the walk was over everyone was treated to a free hamburger lunch, which was followed by a variety of fun activities. We returned back to home base around 2:30 PM, all of feeling good. March of Dimes is a great charity to support, raising awareness and funds to prevent pre-mature births, and minimize the ill effects associated with pre-mature births and saving precious life's.

By Austin Ly, Wilson Key Club Member and Events Coordinator for D35W March for Babies was a wonderful experience for me, I watched as not just fellow Key Clubbers but other people from a variety of different organizations worked together to raise money for this amazing cause. I was inspired by the hundreds of people that showed up. People of all ages came out to sup-port, little toddlers, teens, and even the elderly came to raise money. I found that amazing. At the event itself I was able to meet lots of new people, people that have become my good friends. I'm glad to have met people not just from my home division (D35W) but my sister division Division 35 East. Overall it was an amazing event and I cant wait for the next one!

Kiwanian in the Classroom - Wilson Mach

Wilson Mach, our newest member and Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of First General

Bank, goes back to the classroom at Rowland High School to teach students in Mr. Shay Lohman’s class about

the business world of banking. Mr. Mach went to Mr. Lohman’s Economics and US Government classes at Row-

land High School to share with students his experiences and knowledge about financial literacy and how the

federal reserve requirement works as well as career opportunities in banking.

Mr. Mach summarizes his experience in the following quote: "We appreciate Mr. Lohman's invitation to speak

with our young people about the importance of saving and managing their money, building credit and making

good money decisions - things that they may not have thought about, and yet, many teenagers are spending

like adults, but are probably unaware of the possible consequences of their spending choices. We hope the

presentation will at least provide tools and information to help students learn healthy money-management

practices and attitudes that will last throughout their lives.

Mr. Mach is embracing the Kiwanian philosophy of changing the world one community and one child at a time.

Saturday, April 26th By Lon Salgren The Delhaven Beautification Work Day consisted of weeding, pruning, landscaping and pruning some large trees on the west side of the rear of the property. There was representation from many community service organizations all coming together to work on this project. In addition to the Kiwanis Club of Hacien-da Heights, there were members of the Industry Hills Rotary, Key Club, KIWIN'S, INTERACT and the Aktion Club of La Puente. Our SLP (Key Clubbers and KIWIN'S) were represented by Sarah Yee, Jacky Zhang, Madelyn Jervis, Victoria Mezak, Natalie Pecero, Olivia Tang, Volephine Tjandra, Lili Anne Labew and Marsha Lee. Kiwanis members included Charlie

Huff, Lon Salgren and Izzeldine Osman. The back plot of dirt had to be weeded, leveled, then planted with plants and flowers. After the plants were placed topsoil was brought in by wheel barrel and leveled. An adjacent area under a tree was weeded, separated from the back plot with 2x4 boards, then filled with a mixture of sand to discourage weeds, yet allow the tree to get water. The large trees on the left side of this area were severely overgrown. Using hand saws, electric chain saws and an electric pruning saw we shaped the tree. Getting the branches that had been pruned proved to be a challenge at times due to there being so many and them all being cross-linked. We put a rope around them and pulled with a van, but it still required pruning the last few branches that were keeping the mass from coming free of the tree. Once we had it clear of the tree, the branches were cut up with pruning shears and the electric chain saw, then placed into the dumpsters. We completely filled 3 dumpsters, then made a pile of the reminder in the driveway next door. later a trash truck from the City of La Puente arrived to load up that huge pile of branches.

An attempt was made to remove the large root of a huge tree at the entrance gate to the property, but it had to be stopped be-cause they broke the handle of the pick they were using. After we completed the work we were treated to lunch boxes catered by Subway. Izzy showed us that the fence post that the swinging gate of the middle property hinges on was sheared off at the concrete when someone backed into it. Charlie and I gave some suggestions on how to repair it, but this will have to wait for a future Delhaven Community Center work day. This project was phase one of a 3 step plan to beautify the DCC. Phases two and three will consist of cleaning up and planting a large plot at the back of the middle property followed by planting trees and shrubs along the street in front of the three properties.

La Puente Valley ROP Student Recognition Program



On Wednesday, April 23, LPV ROP hosted their annual Student Recognition and Awards Dinner. Our club was well represented. David Malkin, Dave W, Jim Stewart & his wife Jean, Lon Salgren, Charlie Huff, were present, all of whom helped out this year as student recognition judges. Also in attendance were Maureen Sinclair, who is Director of Instructional Services at ROP, Gino Kwok who is also the president of HLPUSD's Board of Education, Anna Wu, and baby Kyra. We also had former club members Brian Sanford and Jim Bickel, both helped out as student recognition judges this year. Out of thirty nine students recognized, fifteen were from Los Altos and Wilson High Schools. Many of whom also received scholarships, including Jacob Barron of Los Altos, and Ashley Ho a Key Club member from Los Altos High School, who was recog-nized as the ROP Student of the Year. Our club awarded two $500.00 scholarships. President Mahmood Bashir, and Scholarship Committee Chair Dave W, presented the checks and the Recognition Certificates to Erika Sifuentes of Nogales High School, and Isela Franco of Workman High School for their outstanding achievements this past year. We are proud of all of the students who were recognized from HLPUSD, RUSD, and BUSD, and are glad to assist a couple of these students to attend college, and continue with their higher education, and staying true to our mission statement "....improving the world one child, and one community at a time"

La Puente Valley ROP Student Recognition Program

By Ashley Ho, Los Altos Key Club & KIWIN’S member Well last night, I attended the student recognition dinner with Jacob Barron and Alisa Smanpongse. We were all recognized by ROP and awarded scholarships for a first round participation. I was so proud of the both of them. They had both worked so hard and I was so happy for them. Then later on that night, I had a bit of a surprise. I had been chosen as the student of the year and the first place winner of the sector award. I wasn't expecting to be called so when they did, I was of course shocked! I had initially thought that they had made a mistake on who they were calling but they hadn't. Despite the initial shock, I was real-ly grateful for being chosen as the recipient of these awards. It was a memorable night and I was appreciative of the fact that I was able to share it with my friends as well. I believe I was only able to accomplish so much because of my affiliations with Key Club and the Los Altos Academy of Engineering. Both of my clubs got me incredibly involved with my community, allowing me to work with people that were also gearing towards something that was bigger than ourselves. They had taught me how to really push myself and what it meant to be a leader. I would also like to say thank you to ROP, the district board, and anyone else that made that night possible.

By Crystal Espinosa, Newly Elected President It was almost unbelievable to think that I would be stepping into the shoes of past president, Firuze Barimani, but with the support and encouragement from my friends, my term has started off great. On Thursday, Key Club placed 2nd in an Operation Smile Relay Fundraiser. Also, this weekend we had great member participation at Saturday's Watershed Restoration and Sunday's Ribfest. Final-ly tomorrow starts Eliminate week which we teamed up with KIWINS, raising money by selling buttons, popsicles, and asking for donations.

T.E.A. “Teen parents Excelling through Adversities” Annual Luncheon

By Dave Wallach Kiwanians are always looking for ways to give back and help the families of our communities. On Friday, May 2, 2014 the Teen Parents Excelling Through Adversity (TEA) Luncheon was held at the Industry Hills Expo Center. The event is organized by Gloria Mitchell. Gloria is a past member of the Kiwanis Club of La Puente Industry. Nine years ago Gloria’s 15 year old daughter found out that she was pregnant. There were very little opportunities to help teen moms and dads. Gloria thought that so many teens were going through the same situation so she came up with program TEA. The program promotes continuing education, family plan-ning, career goals, and encourages the teens to plan for the future of their families. Repre-senting our club at the event were: Anna Wu, Charlie Huff, David Malkin, and Dave Wallach. Our club has sponsored scholarships for this program for the past 4 years. The program ser-vices many of the high schools in the Rowland, Bassett, and Hacienda La Puente School Dis-tricts.

Watershed Restoration Day

We gathered at Los Altos High School at 7AM for the Watershed Restoration event. Fourteen of our SLP came

out to help us with this project. Los Altos KIWIN'S was represented by Jocelyn Liu. Los Altos Key Club was repre-

sented by Sarah Yee, Sean Hu, Maharsh Patel and Jeffrey Lin. Glen A Wilson Key Club was represented by Dyl-

an Tran, Austin Ly, Andrew Wong, Parvene Banimani, Firuz Banimani, Crystal Esponosa and Cynthia Chan.

Orange Grove Middle School Builders Club was represented by John Ku and Erick Mendoza.

Kiwanis Club members present were Charlie Huff and Lon Salgren. Initially I had scheduled to meet Charlie in

Irwindale and we would ride up in my van from there towing the Kiwanis cook trailer. Mahmood informed me

late Friday that we were in need of someone to ride up on the bus with the kids. I phoned Charlie very early

Saturday morning and he drove from Burbank to meet the bus in time for their 7:20 AM departure. I hooked up

the trailer and bought supplies to cook for everyone.

The planting site was roughly 3 miles past the Environmental Education Site in an area where we had also

planted trees roughly 8 years ago. Unfortunately, since that time the area had suffered from a forest fire. There

are a few survivors of the trees we planted and they stand roughly 8 feet tall now. I arrived and set up the trail-

er about 10:15. They were nearly done planting the 100 trees by that time.

Several of the kids helped to set up the trailer and cook the hamburgers and cheese pizzas. Charlie cooked

hamburgers, while I helped on the griddle cooking the pizzas. There was plenty of food for everyone. The tem-

perature was a pleasant 86 degrees by the time we headed down the hill. I dropped the trailer back at my

house, then headed over to Los Altos, but by the time I arrived everyone but the bus driver had already depart-

ed. Thanks to everyone who came out to help us with this project. Also thanks to Mahmood, Dave Wallach and

Kathy Young for getting the word out to our SLP and gathering the information how many volunteers would be

coming out to support us. Also thanks to Jennifer and Paul for dropping by the permission slips for the OGMS

Builders Clubbers. I also send thanks to Mahmood for getting us a last minute donation of more water from

USGMWD and to Ed Chavez and Ruben for the donation of the 25 cases of water I was able to pick up Friday in

time for our busy weekend of service and fundraising.

By Anna Wu May 5– 9th is Eliminate Week! All the SLPs are hard at work this week raising funds and awareness for The Eliminate Project. As the new chair for Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Project Eliminate, I have been coming up with new ideas to fundraise while keeping it fun! As many members know I recently had a baby girl and she is the major reason I wanted to be Eliminate Chair, she is also my little helper when it comes to raising awareness and funds. I made candles with Kyra’s footprint to remind donators that they are donating money to save a baby’s life. (photo below) Kyra will also be going

with me to visit other organizations in our communi-ty to let them know this important cause that Kiwa-nis is committed to. On Tuesday, May 20th, Kyra and I will be visiting the Walnut Valley Rotary Club. I have already reached out to the La Puente Lions club, Hacienda Heights Women’s Club, and private businesses in the area to come and speak about Eliminate.
