The 2009-10 Kiwanis year is now two months old and weare seeing many clubs enthusiastically providing service totheir communities. Please make membership growth apriority in your club to insure that your community continuesto have benefit of Kiwanis Service in the future. I would justlike to take a moment to update you on a few topics of interest.

Club TreasurersAs a long-time Club Treasurer, I always try to be aware ofchanges that have occurred or changes that will be occurringin the near future. Two weeks ago I participated in a Webinarput on by Kiwanis International Staff entitled “IRS FormsFiling and Reporting – US”. It was exceptionally well doneand another example how your dues dollars are being putto work. I would highly recommend that you go to the KiwanisWebsite at www.kiwanisone.org. When you get there, type“Webinar Archive” in the Search box at the top right andview the recording of the webinar as it was presented. Howmany of you are aware that every Kiwanis club, no matterhow large or small, must file either a Form 990, a Form 990-EZ, or a Form 990-N? If you view this webinar, you will beand while you are at it, let your fellow club members knowthat there are webinars available for viewing regarding anumber of important topics.

Club SecretariesAt our Mid Year Education Day on March 13, 2010, I will bepresenting a workshop to review your concerns with thechanges made on the Monthly Report and also to give youinformation about the new functions you will have availableon the KiwanisOne Reporting system. In late January, it isintended that you will have the ability to add, delete, andmodify your membership records online without sending hardcopy change requests to Kiwanis International inIndianapolis. We will be reviewing changes in the systemduring the workshop at Mid Year. We have scheduled twoseparate sessions to insure that you have an opportunity toattend one or the other. Please make every effort to attend.

Mid Year Education DayOur 2010 Mid Year Education Day will take place on March13, 2010 at The Conference Center at NorthPointe.Information and registration forms can be found elsewherein this newsletter. We know you will want to join us when wemeet next March. Watch your mailbox (and our districtwebsite) for additional information on the 2010 Mid YearEducation Day Workshop Schedule. Mark your calendars!

Governor

Don Parker,[email protected]

By the time you read this First Lady Carol and I will havecompleted official visits to 19 of the 27 divisions in the OhioDistrict of Kiwanis. The hospitality and warmth shown to usduring these visits will provide very pleasant lastingmemories. We have made new Kiwanis friends and renewedfriendships throughout the district in the past two months.

As expected, we have learned of the service that Kiwanisclubs are providing to their communities and the childrenboth near and far. We have heard of projects that arerepeated in communities all over the Kiwanis world. And,we have learned of some new and unusual projects that arenot so common but which have great significance in thelocal community. We have laughed, shared stories, sang(although not well in my case), enjoyed entertainment andbenefitted from the company of sponsored programparticipants (Key Club and Circle K).

In my prepared remarks, I have attempted to draw attentionto the needs in the membership growth area. Decliningmembership and loss of clubs causes a decline in the handsavailable to do the great service work of Kiwanis. I am askingall Kiwanis members to help develop and implement a clubmembership growth plan so that our clubs can continue tomeet the identified needs of the local community and to helpmeet the needs of children on both a local and global scale.

I also speak of the need to develop local marketing andbranding plans so that word of the good work gets spreadon the local level. Large scale projects, sometimes inpartnerships with other organizations and groups can bringstrong and beneficial attention to Kiwanis.

Sponsored leadership programs also receive some of myattention as I address attendees of these official visits.Kiwanis is unique in having sponsored programs for youthfrom elementary through college. Again, local Kiwanis clubsare the source of sponsorship, assistance in planning andcompleting projects, and fellowship across the generations.

As you may have noticed, I fully understand that all Kiwaniswork is done by the members, individually and collectively,of the local club. The Kiwanis International elected leadersand professional staff exist to serve the local clubs. Thoseservices include leadership education, material resources, assistance in membership growth planning and activities, and promotion on a global scale. The Ohio District electedleaders and professional staff exist for nearly the samepurposes. Planning and delivering district events andservices to help local club leaders and members becomemore effective in their roles are among the primary activitiesof district leaders and staff. Club leaders and membersshould feel comfortable in requesting and utilizing theresources that their International and District dues provide.

As District Governor, it is my pleasure to serve you, themembers of Kiwanis. I intend to continue to visit, observe, share, and promote. I plan to continue to recognize thosewho “Do Something” through Kiwanis to improve the livesof children and to meet needs of our communities.

Thank you for all “YOU” are doing.

New Investment Advisor for ODKFThe Ohio District Kiwanis Foundation approved a newinvestment advisor at the December board meeting. According to the Foundation board, six potential financialadvisors gave a 45 minute presentation along with detailsfor proposed portfolio, fees and reporting capabilities. Theboard unanimously selected Morgan Keegan andCompany, Inc. According to the search committeeand board members, they were very impressed withinformation provided by Morgan Keegan and Company. In particular a comprehensive financial document will becreated for each club advised fund account providinginformation about the investment of their fund. Search for an investment advisor occurred after approvalof the revised investment policy approved in July by theFoundation board. Kiwanis clubs interested in more information regardingClub Advised Funds should contact Jean Forbes [email protected] or Ted Coons at [email protected].

Approximately 30 members of the Hilliard Davidson KeyClub and their Kiwanis advisor, First Lady Carol Parker, spent a Friday after school putting colorful and festiveholiday decorations on the wheelchairs and walkers ofsome of the residents of Arbors nursing center of Hilliard.

The decorations delighted the residents, but moreimportant was the interaction between the key clubbersand the residents. Good conversation across thegenerations had everyone laughing and enjoying theactivity.

It’s time to think about your club’s participation in supportof Kiwanis International Foundation’s Annual GiftCampaign. Why do we have this annual drive? It’s tohelp the Foundation fund the many projects that are largerthan our individuals, their clubs or their districts.

The goal is to think in terms of averaging a gift of $5 permember. Is that a difficult target to attain? Consider aclub with 30 members and a service/welfare budget of$10,000. An average gift of $5 per member would beonly $150. That’s 1.5% of the service/welfare budget andmeans that 98.5% of the funds the club raised stay in thecommunity. Please consider making a gift within your clubthat meets this goal. The children of the world, as well asthose in each community, are depending on us.

If you have questions or need help please do not hesitateto call me at 330-465-4690 or reach me [email protected]. Thanks again for all your pastsupport and let’s reach new heights in 2010.

A Note on Lodging for the KiwanisInternational Convention

As I have traveled the Ohio District this fall, I have onseveral occasions been asked why the Ohio Districthas been assigned to the most expensive hotel at theupcoming Kiwanis International Convention in LasVegas. I have been assured that district hotelassignments are done more or less at random. TheOhio delegation is expected to be large and thusneeded to be in a hotel with a large room block availablefor the dates of the convention.

I have also been advised that Ohio attendees maychoose from among any of the hotels listed on theconvention registration information and receive therates quoted. I was told that the Bally’s Hotel is adjacentto the Paris Hotel and offers lower rates for theconvention.

The bottom line is that I want you to attend theconvention. You have a choice about lodging. I havebeen told by those who know that the Paris Hotel isvery nice and if you choose to stay there you will bevery comfortable. However, there are less expensivelodging options so please just register to attend theconvention and choose the lodging that best suits yourneeds.

Kiwanis Kids are growing! As of this issue of the OhioDistrict Newsletter, 7 new K-Kids have been chartered. This is outstanding since the Kiwanis year is only a littleover 2 months along. Lt. Governors, please continue toencourage your club presidents and the ServiceLeadership Program Chairs to contact the organizationsdealing with youth and schools in their districts and informthem of the wonderful opportunities Kiwanis Kidsprograms offer to their young people.

In fact, a whole division could become involved with theKiwanis Service Leadership Programs. Division 1N isdoing this by actively partnering with the Boys & GirlsClubs in their division. Individual clubs are doing this, buta whole division to participate is very unusual. Division14 reports that they have 4 B.U.G. Programs now up andrunning. This is certainly a wonderful way to start theKiwanis year.

Unfortunately on a sad note, levy failures are affecting K-Kids Clubs in some school districts. The Boards ofEducation may decide to eliminate all clubs in their entiresystems. Sponsoring Kiwanis clubs may have to comeup with creative ideas to help keep these K-Kids viable. The service, good works and leadership skills that theybuild are too important to lose.

Our work is cut out for us. We have to keep working tobuild new Service Leadership Programs and we have tocontinue providing our support for the ones in existence.

Fall Key Leader: Another Success!

Seventy-two students from all over Ohio convened atRecreation Unlimited during the weekend of November13-15 for a unique leadership experience. Led by BrendanBurchard, students explored the five facets of serviceleadership and learned how to become the leaders in theircommunities. These students, along with fifteen adultvolunteers, enjoyed a weekend of fabulous weather, allowing for some quality time outdoors. Highlightsincluded a variety of physical team challenges on thecamp’s low ropes course. Young Key Leaders truly puttheir best feet forward as theyencouraged one another toachieve their personal best andworked together to meet thechallenges presented to them. They enjoyed the opportunity toclimb an 8-foot-high wall with noequipment, squeezethemselves into a large woodenbox (and then get out of it),traverse a tightrope, and fallfrom a platform into the group’swaiting arms. On Saturdaynight, the group entertained oneanother by performing skitsbased on their choice of serviceleadership principles. Theyexplored the recently discussed

concepts of personal growth, integrity, respect, buildingcommunity, and the pursuit of excellence. Afterwards, they relaxed with s’mores at the fireplace. A greatweekend was had by all!

The Ohio Key Leader team would like to thank thirty-twoKiwanis Clubs for their sponsorship of these students fromthirty-five different high schools around Ohio. We aregrateful for your generous support of this outstandingprogram. You, too, can be a Key Leader sponsor in thefuture. The next opportunity will come this spring, April30 – May 2, 2010. Now is the time to begin recruitingyour future Key Leaders. Your club will be receiving amailing from the Key Leader staff at Kiwanis Internationalin January. Please use these materials to promote thisevent to your club and high-school students in yourcommunity.

Close The Back Door

“Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteersdedicated to changing the world one child and onecommunity at a time”. The clubs in our district live upto this – we are the best service organization in theworld. Your clubs are making a difference in yourcommunity. The only way to maintain this service, andgrow it, is to reverse the decline in membership mostof our clubs have seen. This must be done for EACH ofour clubs – IT MUST be done for us all.

It starts with a club growth plan. The plan has to havegoals, action plans to meet those goals, who will acton those plans and when the plans will be implemented. One of the first goals should be membership retention. We worked hard to bring in members – we need to retainthose who joined – ‘To close The Back Door”.

There is information available from KI to help you.Achieving Club Excellence describes a seven stepprocess to retention and growth: Commit to excellence,Assess club vitality, Plan your club’s success, Shareyour story, Inform members, Welcome new members –meet their needs and Enhance the member experience.

Best Practices of Non-Traditional Clubs also offers goodplans and advice: Make service hands-on, Mix social& service, Build a tight leadership structure, Use manyforms of communication and Know your product. Theseare found at www.kiwanisone.org or email me.

These process ideas offer good advice that is oftenforgotten. Hands on projects are fun and buildfriendships. How vital is your club? Are membersinvolved? Are changes needed? Keep membersinvolved in projects and encourage participation inleadership, let members know you care about them –meet their needs and make membership a positiveexperience. Turn club members into Kiwanians.

Closing the back door puts you and your club on itsfirst step toward growth. I know you can do it. Thegrowth of your club is important – important to yourcommunity. As Governor Don has said: “It’s time- todo something.” We are in this together.

SAVE THE DATE – To Grow Your ClubAll interested members are invited to a GROWTH SUMMIT inyour area. Governor Don Parker has arranged opportunitiesfor Kiwanis Clubs throughout the state to receive practical ideasand education to grow your membership through new members, membership retention and new club building.

Our clubs do spectacular service in our communities. Buteach of our clubs could use more members to continue thisservice – and many communities not presently served needKiwanis service. Will you join us?

Five summits are planned across Ohio. They are:·Northwest (Divisions 1-N, 1-S, 2, 11-N & 12) Jan. 12th

·Southwest (Divisions 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8) Jan. 13th

·Central/Southeast (Divisions 9, 10-W, 10-S, 10-E, 11-S &18) Jan. 16th

DO SOMETHING…TO SERVE OTHERS!!

I hope you and your family had a great Thanksgiving. Myfamily and I had a great Thanksgiving of food andfellowship. And we gave thanks for so many reasons.

At this time of year, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, there are many ways to serve others in our communities. And our communities need Kiwanians to DOSOMETHING NOW! I encourage each of you to DoSomething to serve someone else. There are people inneed throughout the Ohio District; family, friends, neighbors, and even other Kiwanians. These needs covera broad range; food, shelter, clothing, someone to talk towho will listen, a word of encouragement, the sound of aChristmas carol, or a comforting hug. The list of needs islong and we Kiwanians can help meet the needs of ourcommunities.

Here are ideas for Community Services during this holidayseason:

· Collect items at Kiwanis meetings, then give them

away-cans of food, paper towels, toilet paper, coats, gloves, stocking caps, money, signedChristmas cards

· Serve meals at a homeless shelter· Visit a nursing home and talk to people· Sing Christmas carols in neighborhoods, at local

businesses (like a restaurant), at a hospital ornursing home

· Ring bells for the Salvation Army red kettles· Develop a list of people in need and send them

each a Christmas card with words ofencouragement

· Adopt a family to provide food and gifts for them· Help a local charity sell Christmas trees· Set up community displays such as Christmas

decorations· Collect, assemble and/or deliver food baskets at

any time of year· Wrap gifts for anyone-especially toys for kids at

Christmas· Help with “Toys for Tots”· Assist with a “Giving Tree” and donate gifts· Make cash donations of any amount to agencies

that help others· Shovel, plow or blow snow for someone in need-

perhaps a neighbor

This is a great time to DO SOMETHING….To serve othersin our communities! Each Kiwanis club is encouraged toadd at least one new service project this year and to servemore people than you have before. Please let me knowwhat you are doing to serve others.

Have a Very Merry Christmas!

Pictured are members of the Kiwanis Club ofDelaware County prior to the Holiday ClearingHouse food packing day Saturday morning. Ourclub has coordinated packing day for over 25 yearsfor People In Need, our community food pantry.

Hundreds of community volunteers come to helppack the food bags. This year, over 1100 food bagswere packed that will benefit well over 450 needyDelaware County families at the holiday season. This is our club’s largest “hands on” service projectof the year. It is a great community service projectand Kiwanians are well know for this throughoutthe community.

Ohio District Kiwanis First Lady, Carol Parker, has been verypleased with the positive response she has received duringthe Governor and First Lady official visits.

In her presentation, Carol speaks of the need to continuethe focus of the Ohio District Kiwanis Foundation—Prevention and Treatment of Pediatric Trauma. She talksabout the efforts of Kiwanis Clubs around the Ohio Districtas they have engaged in projects on the local level that aidin preventing and treating pediatric trauma.

First Lady Carol also talks about a special interest of hers, the prevention of child abuse. Carol is urging all Kiwanisclubs to invite speakers to their clubs to talk about preventionof child abuse. She is also asking Kiwanis clubs to engagein “hands-on” projects that directly combat or respond tochild abuse by volunteering in hospitals and child advocacycenters, planning and organizing pinwheel awarenessevents, distributing literature, and helping to educate newand expectant parents.

To assist in bringing attention to her special interest in childabuse and to raise funds to provide assistance to statewidechild advocacy efforts, Carol makes available special totebags with Kiwanis and child abuse prevention logos. Carolasks a $5 donation for each tote bag.

As Lt. Governor, Bob Columber, (Division 11S) has said,“There is no worse form of trauma to children than childabuse.” Bob, who also serves on the Ohio DistrictFoundation Board, has challenged his division to raise $1000through the distribution of the tote bags.

First Lady Carol would like to thank Joanne Whiteman ofthe Gahanna Kiwanis club for initiating the idea of the tote

Risk Management

Jack Hilborn District [email protected]

It is essential that all Ohio Kiwanis clubs appoint a SafetyCoordinator for the club. It would be helpful if that personhad an insurance background, but it is not essential. Goodcommon sense is essential, however. The club Safety Coordinator should be consulted during theplanning stage for any Kiwanis-sponsored event to helpassure the safety of all participants and all othersinvolved. Kiwanis International defines the responsibilitiesof the Safety Coordinator as analyzing “the risk factorsinvolved, eliminate those factors to the greatest extentpossible, transfer the risk factors to other individuals ororganizations, and obtain appropriate hold-harmlessagreements and certificates of insurance for his/her club.” Late in November, 2009, Kiwanis International mailed to eachclub secretary the 2009-10 General Liability RiskManagement Packet. The club Safety Coordinator shouldobtain this package from the secretary. If, for some reason, the packet is misplaced, the Safety Coordinator can requesta new one from Kiwanis International by calling 1-800-KIWANIS or going on-line to the KiwanisOne.org websiteand down-loading the information. As the Ohio District Risk Manager, I am always available asa resource and/or speaker to Ohio clubs and would be gladto assist wherever and whenever needed. I should pointout that Liquor Liability at a $1 million limit is now included inthe Kiwanis International-sponsored insurance plan appliesto all Kiwanis Clubs and our Sponsored Organizations suchas Key Club, Aktion Club, etc. Finally, each club secretaryshould also be on the lookout for a Club Accident Insurancepamphlet that went in the mail today from KiwanisInternational. Aktion Clubs

The Hero Within

This year’s Ohio Aktion Club theme is “The Hero Within”and all Ohio Aktion Club members have been encouragedto be a Hero through personal and community service.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been contemplating OhioAktion Clubs more than ever – the wonderful work thatthey do in the community and all of the wonderful AktionClub members.

Hancock County Aktion Club president, Michelledescribes a “Hero” as “Someone who sees somethingthat needs to be done and does it.”

For many Aktion Club members their lives have been filledwith discouragement as they were told for most of theirlives that they are unable to contribute to the community.Visiting Aktion Clubs around Ohio has certainly seemedto back this up. And yet our Aktion Club memberscontinue to overcome their disabilities in BIG ways tobecome Heroes in their community as they work with joy, hope and caring to “fix” what they see needs to be done.If asked most Aktion Club members will very simply statethat so many have given to them, they just want to returnthe favor. But it’s much more than that! Our Ohio AktionClubs are full of real heroes who give of themselves withlove and a desire to help make things right.

New Aktion Clubs

If your club or division is interested in developing an AktionClub, please feel free to call or email me at any time at419.427.8452 or [email protected] This is one ofthe most rewarding things that you’ll ever do!

Aktion Club dues

If your Aktion Club hasn’t already paid their KiwanisInternational Aktion Club dues yet or are having difficultywith the on-line payment, please let me know as soon aspossible. Not paying dues can put the club charter onsuspension.

We recently had an inquiry from one of our members asking whether one of their fellow club members was in the top 100 in length ofservice to Kiwanis in the district. This caused us to think that a list of those members with more than 50 years Kiwanis Servicewould be proper recognition for those serving their communities over many years. We hope you will enjoy seeing this information inprint.

My thanks to all of you who are doing projects that supportchildren ages 0-5 years. Many of you participated in thecereal drive and some of your clubs are collecting cerealat one meeting a month to donate to a local foodbank.

Some suggested projects included collecting gloves, scarves and boots for your local preschools and daycares. Many times these places would love to have people comein occasionally to read to the children.

Some issues to inform your clubs about include the factthat lead poisoning is still a concern. The focus haschanged from paints having lead in it to how we areimproperly removing this hazard. Ohio has new lawsregarding car seats.

The March of Dimes is looking for volunteers for theirvarious walks. Some of your children service agencieswould welcome old suitcases that are still useable. Thesecould be used to pack a child’s belongings in situationswhere the child must be removed from a home.

I will be at mid year and would like to have a service projecthappening for YCPO. If you have ideas, I would love tohear from you.

Let’s make the New Year a great one for as many childrenas we can. Happy 2010!

THE OBJECTS OF KIWANIS

* To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.

* To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.

* To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards.

* To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.

* To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities.

* To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

The six permanent Objects of Kiwanis Internationalwere approved by Kiwanis club delegates at the 1924Convention in Denver, Colorado. Through thesucceeding decades, they have remainedunchanged.

Ohio Circle K - Service- Sarah Roush, District Administrator

The Ohio District of Circle K has been very busy thissemester/quarter. Service hours are pouring in and I haveno doubt that we will reach our service goal this year. Asof the end of November, we had registered over 7,348hours of service to our communities.

Dues were also due the first of December and while weare awaiting final numbers – we look to be well over 500members this year with hopefully being close to 550. Theclubs at the University of Cincinnati and University ofFindlay are close to re-chartering and we have hopes stillto charter Otterbein College this year.

This year the fall Membership Awareness Conference washeld in beautiful Marietta. Beautiful fall weather made itan especially wonderful event. After the workshops werecomplete, the students broke into teams to do what else-service! Volunteers built bat houses, raked leaves at ahistorical cemetery, did a “river sweep”, exercised animalsat the humane society and gathered books for Better WorldBooks. Not only did this provide an opportunity to help

others, it alsoprovided a chanceto get to know theirfellow membersfrom across thestate and PA.

Our next event isthe Ohio DistrictCircle KConvention, to beheld in Dayton,February 19-21,2010. Registration,contest ands c h o l a r s h i pinformation is nowon line atwww.ckiohio.org.

Candidates for office are encouraged to review the policymanual and complete the application for office. We areaccepting donations to help offset the cost of dcon.Program ads are available for purchase and donationsto the KICK fund via the Ohio District Kiwanis Foundation(for individuals) or directly to Ohio District Circle K (forclubs) will help keep the event affordable for our studentbody.

I wish to offer a special thank you to the Kiwanis Clubsof Northridge, Newark, Gahanna, Nordonia Hills, EastToledo-Oregon, Port Clinton and Independence for theirdonations to the KICK Fund.

These students are wonderful representatives of theKiwanis Family – embodying everything we should hopefor – enthusiasm, altruistic values and hope for a brightfuture. I encourage you to get to know them.

Happy Holidays from myself and the Circle K DistrictBoard.
