Rest assured, it will be OK - it has the promise of Godbehind it. Skeptics can strike their blows - they gone!

POEM : The Anvil of God's WordLast eve I passed beside a blacksmith's doorAnd heard the anvil ring the vesper chime; When looking in, I saw upon the floor,Old hammers worn with beating years of time."How many anvils have you had," said I,"To wear and batter these hammers so?""Just one," said he; then with a twinkling eye,"The anvil wears the hammers out, you know."And so, I thought, the anvil of God's Word,For ages, skeptics blows have beat upon;Yet, though the noise offall ing blows was heard,The anvil is unharmed - the hammers gone.

Answer: Yes - It matters. Yes - We can know which Bible touse. Reasons why we strongly hold to the KJVand reject allother modern versions of the Bible.

Goal is to answer Question: "Why do we hold so strongly tothe King James Version of the Bible and reject all modernEnglish translations of the Bible?"

PRESUPPOSITIONSThere are some things we assume and believe to be true.

I llUST: Creation or Evolution?1. I start with the . I it is God's word.~~----:-----';2. I believe the bible - Geni-ii = historical account3. I look at world thru the glasses of my faith in Bible

An athesit ic evolutionist begins with different set of glasses1. He does believe the Bible is the infallible Word of God2. He does not see Gen.1-3 as a true account3. He must begin by looking at natural causes for everything and

does not give space to consider the supernatural creation ofGod since he rejects God as the Bible reveals Him.

Presupposition #1-1 BELIEVEIN THESUFFICIENCYOF SCRIPTURES 1 Tim. 3:16-17 = answer any question about life that nee~;s

answering in the Chr istian life (completely furnish -equipped, supplied)

    , c .

1 Peter 1:3 - give to us all things that pertain to life andgodliness

Don't have to rely on scholars (I believe in Education)

Presupposition #2 - SOUL~====~ OF BELIEVER 1 John 2:27 - Holy Spirit is the "anointing" - not dependent

on a teacher to be able to study and learn and come to thetruth (though godly teachers help us).

Presupposition #3 - ~====--' OFTRUEDOCTRINE (TRUTH) 2 Cor ..11:3 Doesn't mean everything in Bible is easy to understand but

simply means ORDINARYCHRISTIANhas the ability tounderstand the Bible.

Matt. 11:25 - revealed it unto babes

Presupposition #4 - BELIEFIN THE REALITYOFTHE~====-=" 1 Peter 5:8 Chief goal since the garden of Eden is t o attach the Word

of God - cast doubt upon God and His word Yea, hath God said? .Satan would definitely be involved in Bible version issues

Presupposition #5 - BELIEFIN THE PREEMINENCEOF ""--~_~-' Heb. 11:6 - not blind leap into dark - based upon many

infallible proofs Rom.10:17 - Faith cometh .... Bible is basis of our faith Our faith not in man but God; not in scholarship but God I believe - have faith that God has preserved His Word

o Why? - He promised it in the Scriptures

  • 8/7/2019 KjvConfNotes Dr Roger Baker

    6/16

Presupposition #6 - BELIEFIN THE NECESSITYOFTHE HOLYSPIRIT 1Cor.2 :14 - Impossible to understand the issues

concerning the Bible or appreciate the Bible and what itsayswithout the Holy Spirit - "spiri tually discerned"

    Joseph Philpott (graduate of Oxford)-

Chief architects of the Greek text that is the basis of allmodern English translations were for most part l iberal, unsaved, unspiritual men, and heretics

    Example: 1Timothy 3:16

NIV ~Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great: Heappeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spir it, was seen byangels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in theworld, was taken up in glory.NASB - By common confession, great is the mystery ofgodliness: He who was revealed in the flesh, Was vindicated inthe Spirit, Seen by angels, Proclaimed among the nations,Believed on in the wor ld, Taken up in glory.

    FOUR REASONSWE STRONGLYHOLD TO THEKJVERSION

    \ I

Dr. D.A. Waite has little outline I want to use here - EMPHASIS NTWe hold stronglv, to the KJVersiel" l Jf t ile Bible because:

    1. BASED ON A SUPERIOR GREEK.Remember: Our N.T. originally written in =====~-==' language

So that is where we must begin - Our N.T. begins!Again differences between KJ V and New Modern English versions ofBible are not just updates in language for easier reading - they startwith a different Greek text - Greek words have been ~-~---='."==~~~ __ ----" substituted - eliminates over 2800 words fromtraditional Greek text that the KJ V based upon.

TW O STREAMS OR TYPES OF G REEK TEXTSThough there are 100'5 translations on market today, for all practicalpurposes all of these are based on two texts.

Manuscripts (MSS)- ancient copies of the Bible (partial or complete)Text - attempt of man (good-under guidance of God or bad) to takethe manuscripts and them into one source (text).Translation- attempt to translate from that Greek text into common=='-==-----"~~ of the people.

    1. Would you put a fox in charge of your chickens?2. Would you put a t hief in charge of your bank?3. Would you put pedophile in charge of your children?4. Would you put a heretic in charge of your Bible?

CORRUPT STREAM / CORRU PT FAMilY OF GREEK TEX TS(Alexandrian / Critical / Westcott-Hort)Key to understanding why we use the K J . V is understandingwhere it came from in contrast to where 1311the modernversions today came from := 2 different Greek Texts

All the modern translations are based on adifferent Greek text (which we will show to becorrupt) than the KJV(which we will show to bethe preserved word of God).

KJVwas based on the right Greek text - the onepreserved among God's people through thecenturies.

    1. How did this N.T.Greek text come--_---down to ustoday?

    1) God gave us His Word (Revelation) through holy men ofGod asthey were moved by the Holv Spirit (inspiration).

area - since he was _ of Origen (from 3Alexandria) his text were probably those fromEgypt (corrupt text)

Remember: Critical text that all new modernversions are based came primarily from 2 MSS(Vaticanus (B) and Siniaticus (Aleph)) ~ fromAlexandria, Egypt.

Many believe the V& Scould have been one ofthe 50 copies made by Eusebius

o "It is quite possible that Aleph and Bare.two of these 50"- A.T. ~obertsono Tischendord who discovered Sinaiaticus

believed both 5 and V were 2 of the 50.5) The modern Greek Text 1scalled the_______ Text because they came fromAlexandria, Egypt

    6) Conclusion: Any Bible MSSfrom Egypt in that erais highly . (heretics - school - etc)

7} Early church knew this - rejected bibles fromEgypt but the traditional text was used by vastmajority of churches - God's people recognizeGod's word. (Guardians and custodians of God'sWord)

    II)I

    8) Because the church rejected them - faded off 4scene for most part - few people even used them.

    B. Two old Alexandrian texts found. '1) (1815-1874) - German Bible scholar Days of German rationalism - skepticism Traveled world trying to find old bible manuscripts

While in +Saint Catherine's Monastery,. onMount Sinai, where he found, in a trash basket, forty-fourpages of MS$. Monks using it to start fire with, Later founda completed Grk NTand part of Q,T. This is called CodexSinaitlcus (Aleph), Believed this dated back to about 350AD .

    C. Westcott-Hart 51) These men compiled a Greek Text that favoredthese 2 flawed, corrupt text rather than theover 5,000 MSSbeen in existence for hundredsof years and used for 100's years andrecognized by church asWord of God.Relied most heavily on Vaticanus (B).

    2) These 2 manuscripts disagree with the vast.majority of MSSthat have been preserved forcenturies - and disagree with each other (over____ times in gospels alone).

    3) As of 1967 there were ancient Grkmanuscripts

Type Total # of MSS % of MSSWH / TR WH / TR

Note: Modern translations are based upon less thane1%of the existing ancient manuscripts while over99% form the basis of the KJVersion of our Bible 4) Question is " 11 would they rely on

these corrupt text?o Dislike for the Textus Receptus in particular

and disregard for the Scriptures in generalo They were heretics - being used by Satan

    2. Were the chief architects (Westcott & Hort) of theCritical Greek Text ?Remember: It is upon this text that all the modernEnglish versions rest (i.e. NIV, RSV,ASV,NASV,etc).A. Who were these two men?

    B.F.Westcott (1825-1901) and F.J.A.Hart (1828-1892)

    1) Clergymen in the Church of - assignedthe task of making a few revisions to the KingJamestext if there were any errors that needed be corrected.(wrong: tampering scriptures was first mistake) error?

REMEMBER: Not a single original/autograph" in existence forus to view today. But we have been promised by God that Hewould preserve His word for all generations.

There are at leastB major positions on our KJV1. Critical Text Position - we have already covered

Corrupt - basis of all modern English translations2. Ruckmanite Position (Some call i t King James only

position but we are often confused with this when itis calledthis since we only use the KVJ). Commend anyone love and loyalty to Bibel, but they have

taken a stance which is neither histor ical or bibltcal. Rather than "preservation" they believe in double

inspiration (God breath thru KJVtranslators just as He didwith original writers of Scripture, such as Paul).

Believe people must be taught English around world ifthey want to truth, since God only gave it to us in this dayin English - no other language has it.

    3. Preserved Text Position Inspiration was directly applied to original autographs

of Scriptures ( ie Matthew, Mark,..) Preservation- we have a copy of God's Bible which He

inspired when it was originally written - kept in tact inthe English language.

THUS we have an English copy of the intact, preserved, inspired Word of the living God!!

We have a great heritage of great English Bibles that have come downto us - translated from the Received (traditional) text

    1) William Tyndale - greatest name in history of our English Bible First to translate the NT into English from Greek Debate the RCCpriests - one statement he made
