Equations is a research workspace for an eco tourism- policy makingoffice. A free flowing workspace was created in the first floor of a two storied 26year old load bearing structure. The brief for the space was that it had to house the research team and facilitate its intensive interactive way of working. The space was conceived as a canvas for the dense porous interior living. The various functional spaces in theoffice were differentiated by the furniture and other elements. Thisattempt also helped us enhance the streetscape.

RESIDENCE IN KETTI VALLEY

The weekend rest house situated in Ketti Valley, near Lovedale, Ooty, is set on a steep tea estate with views

to the valleys below and the upper Bhavani range which form a part of the Nilgiri mountains.

The building has been designed to be sensitive to the land with minimum intervention and also to give

maximum views to the scenery around. Since the temperatures at an altitude of 2200MSL is low and

the advantage of bright sunlight during the day, the house was designed to heat up during the day with

maximum exposure to the sun and to stay warm through the night by using materials in the interior

that would store the embedded energy of the sun, so as to avoid the need for electrical/mechanical heating

and thereby saving on energy. Also steel was the primary chosen material and the structure is designed

so that it can be dismantled and reassembled in a different location as well.

EXISTING SITE CONDITIONS• The site has a steep slope of 14-19 degrees ,the

least being near the entrance and hence chosen for building the house.

5LEVELLING OF EARTH • As seen in the previous image, there was a huge

level difference between the access road and the site and hence some levelling(by filling) had to be done for vehicles to enter and park easily and also to provide easy access for people.

POSITIONING OF THE BUILDING FLOOR PLATE• Total buildable area for the site was 1500 sq.ft

which was divided into two floors of 750 sq.ft each.

• The lower level was placed off the ground by several feet reduced disturbance to the existing ground conditions and also creates a covered outdoor space for recreation and leisure under the building

• A blank wall was conceived towards the road. This was done to create privacy and also to keep the building visually as inconspicuous as

PLACEMENT OF BEDROOMS• All the three bedrooms were placed in the peripheral

side of the building, which maximizes views to the valley as well as to receive maximum sun exposure, so the bedrooms could warm up during the day and stay warm through the night.

FIRST FLOOR AND ACCESS BRIDGE• An access bridge is proposed for accessing the building

from the parking lot• The first floor of the building was proposed to have the

least amount of internal walls to maximize views to the valley and contains the living and dining areas.

• A balcony is proposed towards the south of the building which can double up as outdoor seating.

ROOF• The building is completed with the roof with gutters

on either side to collect and drain out the water

SIMPLE HELIX RECTANGULAR HELIX COMPLETED STRUCTURE

• We started the structural design process by analysing the structure of a simple helix or an helicoid as it has an intrinsic rigidity with ability to move.

• The structure was then converted to a rectangular or polygonal shape by retaining curves of the top level members

• The resulting structure not only is rigid due to the self locking ability of columns , but also allows for movement which reduces risk of failure due to wind loads.

: AVINGA Properties: Redhills,Chennai: Master plan,Architecture, Interiors and landscape.: 24 Acres.: In remission 2012-2013: Karun Kumbera, Vivek Shah, Soumya Koka, Sharan Moses

The project involved reworking on an already established master plan, the design of a township housing villas, apartments, serviced apartments, a school, commercial spaces, a club house and a central park for recreational activities and a full-fledged service apartment. The project features houses that are placed next to each other on a dense format according to the client specifications, and yet offer immense privacy. Long recessed windows and use of pergolas provide shaded spaces without hampering the daylight entering the spaces. The buildings were designed in accordance with the client’s requirements keeping taking in to account of the market realities which kept changing.

BANGALORE INTERNATIONAL CENTER

The Open House proposal is a design opportunity to address environmental issues in institutional

architecture participating in the construction of Bangalore’s urbanity. This proposal was aimed

at reflecting the dynamic character of Bangalore and will showcase sustainable identity. Attention

has been given to sustainable design principles in terms of a bioclimatic passive strategy, which will

allow good practices and saving in terms of energy consumption. It also allows rainwater harvesting

and reduces the overall CO2 emissions.
