Letter from the Principal

Grady High School recognizes that all segments of the school community must work collaboratively to ensure our instructional program is exemplary and addresses the needs of all students. To that end, administrators, teachers, parents, students and community partners plan and cooperate on a multitude of programs and activities. There is no separate Title I Parental Involvement; the goal is for all constituents to assess needs and implement programs/activities accordingly. The school handles the instructional program and the parents, through the PTSA, handle the communications, which is key to making everything work.

At the end of the school year, all interested parties sit down together and develop the calendar for the school year. Everything is worked around testing dates and other system-wide or statewide dates that cannot be altered. A Grady teacher maintains and updates the calendar throughout the year and also serves as web master for the school website. Parents publish the monthly Knight Lights, which is mailed to every home. A weekly email, the GradyGram, is available for those with Internet access. Everyone has the necessary information about all important dates and events at the school. Parents and students also get written information about curriculum and results of all standardized tests. Even parents who are unable to make frequent visits to the school have current information about what is happening.

On the first day of school, each child receives a packet of important handouts to take home to share with parents. Students get the system’s and the school’s handbooks, lunch applications, media release forms, appropriate Internet usage agreement forms, Title I Compacts, instructions for accessing Infinite Campus (also known as the parent portal), and a wealth of other important materials. Homeroom teachers discuss these materials with the students during an extended homeroom the first day to ensure they understand the expectations of them, and the students are charged with taking materials home to share with parents. Clearly communicating goals for the year leads to a positive start, and frequent updates throughout the year keep things operating smoothly.

Later in the year, parents have an opportunity to complete a survey giving their input, and have opportunities for face-to-face conversations with administrators, teachers and other parents at monthly PTSA meetings and at quarterly principal’s coffees. PTSA meetings are in the evenings, and coffees are held in the morning to accommodate different schedules. Parents are invited to make appointments with counselors for conferences, and these sessions can include meeting with the child’s teachers. Contact information for all teachers is made available in Knight Lights, along with the teachers’ tutorial schedules. Teachers are required to notify parents of student progress at regularly scheduled times, and are encouraged to contact parents frequently to enlist their assistance with the learning process. The parent portal is also available for parents to check attendance and grades.

Grady’s motto is, “Individually, we are different; together, we are Grady.” When home and school unite, we have the strength to successfully meet the challenges of providing a rigorous instructional program that allows all students to achieve.

Grady High School Academy Updates

Biomedical Science & Engineering Academy Wow! It's October already! Do you know where your child stands academically? This is a great time to see how things are going with your child's classes, teachers and social life. Consider having a conversation at the dinner table, in the car on the way to school or anytime you see fit. As a backup, don't forget to check the parent portal. If you don’t see the most recent grades, send your child’s teacher an email and ask for an update or a progress report.

On October 7, 2013, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., selected engineering students will participate in a field experience TECH fair at the Georgia National Grounds in Perry, Georgia. The TECH fair will give students the opportunity to meet and view various technology and engineering products, projects and concepts from various vendors and independent engineers. The fair aims to encourage ways to spark creativity and better understand how engineering affects our lives and the world.

In the world of biomedical science, students and teachers are preparing for our annual Red Cross blood drive and flu shot vaccinations. Students cannot give the shots themselves, of course, but they are actively involved in the overall organization and flow of each event. Students learn the many behind-the-scenes preparations and documentation that takes place. Assistance with registration, ID’s and questionnaires, as well as providing healthy snacks and drinks, are just a few of the things students learn.

Finally, mark your calendars for November 6, 2013, from 9:50 a.m. - 10:50 a.m. This is our first BS&E Honors Program for the 2013-2014 school year. The honors program is a time when we recognize the academic, social and extracurricular achievements of our students. We look forward to much celebration and proud moments.

Raymond L. Dawson, Academy Leader: [email protected]

Business & Entrepreneurship AcademyCongratulations to Kiamba Thompson, who received a scholarship from Youth Entrepreneurs of Georgia to participate in a summer conference held by the Foundation of Economic Education in Arizona.

The Business & Entrepreneurship (B&E) Academy, in its partnership with the NEXT-Step Entrepreneurship Program, received a grant from State Farm Insurance Company to develop and market a service project for Global Youth Service Day. Grady was one of three schools in Georgia to receive this grant.

We are excited that the students in the B&E Academy will have a chance to participate with the Finance and

Scholastic Training (FAST-Track) Program. This is a rigorous, nine-month program that exposes talented minority high school students to the financial services industry. Beginning in September, students meet with mentors twice a month and focus on topics such as stocks, bonds, personal finance, business, operations and real estate. They also explore resume writing, interviewing, networking, business etiquette and public speaking, and have opportunities to visit financial and educational institutions.

We have a new community partner: the FIDELITY BANK that is opening on September 30, 2013, at the corner of Ponce de Leon Avenue and Monroe Drive. The bank wants to support Grady students by providing volunteering, help with projects and funding, as well as assisting as needed. Welcome, FIDELITY BANK, and thanks to our contact, Montrice Robinson.

Communications & Journalism AcademyThe school year is off to a great start and we already have good news to share! The Southerner has earned an All-American rating, the highest the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) awards its member publications. It is the 11th time in 12 years that The Southerner has earned this rating. “It is clear,” wrote NSPA evaluator Gaby Herbst, “that the staff of The Southerner is well-trained and that they have a gift for the craft of journalism. ... The dedication to finding relevant, well-researched content, in addition to clearly upholding a strong code of ethics, is something that should be celebrated.” Additionally, The Southerner earned four (out of five) marks of distinction for excellence in Coverage and Content, Writing and Editing, Layout and Design and Leadership. Please congratulate these talented young journalists and their advisers, Kate Carter and Dave Winter.

The Southerner was also featured in the spring 2013 cover story of the Student Press Law Center Report. The story explores the dilemmas faced by school journalists when covering issues of school violence and crime. You can read the piece at www.splc.org/news/report_detail.asp?id=1676&edition=61

Students in the broadcast and graphic communications pathways attended the Skills USA fall leadership conference on St. Simons Island, September 12 to 14, 2013.

Law & Leadership AcademyThe Law & Leadership Academy is dedicated to providing valuable knowledge of the law. Our teachers, Ms. Barbour, an attorney, and Mr. Bowden, a judge, work to provide students with knowledge in law enforcement and the judiciary.

The academy has partnered with the Georgia State University College of Law. Our teachers are members of their Inns of Court Charter in which law professors and attorneys from major Atlanta law firms coach students to speak and write with precise skill, and to analyze facts and circumstances. These sessions take place the second Tuesday of each month after school, and will provide communication skills that will be useful throughout our students’ lives, regardless of the professions they choose. We are also partnered with other associations that provide an up-close experience of the field of law. For example, we have created opportunities for students to participate in the Junior Corrections Officer Program and gain hands-on experience in a career with the State of Georgia Correctional System. The Street Law Program pairs Grady students with major law firms, such as McKenna Long & Aldridge, and with the AT&T corporate legal department, and others, to learn directly from practicing lawyers.

The Law & Leadership Academy shows the exciting side of law behind the scenes in a courtroom, and gives students opportunities to participate in moot court and mock trial competitions. Please visit our website for upcoming events and opportunities.

Counselors’ Corner

Dual Enrollment UpdateGrady’s dual enrollment program with Atlanta Metropolitan State College will now be known as The Renaissance. The word evokes the spirit and time of the great revival of art, literature and learning that marked the transition from the medieval to the modern world. The new name is fitting, as many of the students who participate are underrepresented, first-generation, college-bound students whose lives are transformed as a result of being challenged in a rigorous environment.

The requirements for admission are: a 20 or better composite score on the ACT, or 970 or better in reading and math on the SAT; a 3.0 or better overall grade point average; a short GAcollege411 ACCEL application; an Atlanta Metropolitan State College application, along with a parent consent form; and a recommendation from a Grady High School core subject teacher.

We will begin recruiting for the second semester in October, and will open the invitation to 11th graders. That said, we highly encourage any interested students to take the ACT or SAT test this semester and see Mr. Young for application information. Join The Renaissance! For more details, contact [email protected].

On October 21, the Grady Book Club (for adults only) will be discussing Beloved, the Pulitzer Prize–winning novel by Toni Morrison. “Staring unflinchingly into the abyss of slavery, this novel transforms history into a story as powerful as Exodus and as intimate as a lullaby,” this is a book that may be difficult to read but should be discussed. We will also be selecting books for the upcoming six months, so please come or send your suggestions. We will meet at the home of Linda Posner-Downing, 664 Irwin Place, 30312. Call Riki Bolster at (404) 822-5397 if you need directions. The book club meets every third Monday of the month in the homes of members. Book selections include fiction, nonfiction and classic novels. All parents and community members are invited to participate.

The Saber’s Rattle

Things are in full swing in JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps). Our first uniform wear days for this year were September 10 -11. As a reminder, cadets are normally to wear uniforms every Tuesday and Wednesday, depending on when they have JROTC class, unless instructed otherwise. Cadets are expected to wear their uniforms correctly all that day. Parents, we need your help to ensure this. Cadets may not have braids, cornrows or unnatural colors in their hair. Males must be clean-shaven and have neatly cut hair, and females must not let their hair touch

their collars on uniform days. All hairstyles must not interfere with the correct wearing of the uniform hat. Any deviation from the policy can affect a cadet’s grade. Looking back, our raider team had a practice raider meet September 14 at Osbourne High School. They are very excited for their upcoming season. We wish them luck. Also on September 14, cadets were invited to attend the Congressman John Lewis Forum, where they got to meet the congressman, as well as receive vital firsthand information about admissions, student life and the military from admissions officers and students at the various military academies.

The major events in October are Saber Day and the raider meets.  Saber Day begins at 10:00 a.m. on October 1, and is mandatory for all cadets. This is the day new cadet officers receive their sabers, and the Knights Battalion will perform a pass in review. All family members are invited to attend. Parents of cadet officers are invited to present their children with their sabers during the ceremony, so please plan to be present. Looking ahead, Grady High School’s first official raider meet will be held October 12 at Spalding High School. Another major event is the annual JLAB event, where selected cadets compete nationally in academic and leadership bowls. The first round opens October 1 and closes October 22.

More information about JROTC and upcoming events can be found on the Grady website. As always, questions and concerns may be directed to any JROTC instructors. Please contact us at (404) 802-3053. We are also growing a good JROTC Parent Booster Club and ask all parents to get involved in supporting the cadets’ program. Please call LTC Johnson at the above number or email [email protected]
