A CITY AT THE WATER
KLAKSVÍKA CITY FOR EVERYONE
A COHERRENT CITYA DYNAMIC CITY
A CITY RESPECTING ITS HISTORY
A DIVERSE CITY
By placing a regular dence grid over the existing city,we get a structure that relates to the existing citystructure which is mainly orientated with the landscape/conturelines, as well as it grabs onto the two sides and pulls them towardsthe middle (the site).
By stretching and twisting the net, a more diverse and exible structure appears, which also has the ability of connecting tosome of the main roads and connection in the surrounding area, and in that way lead into the new space. It also gives some more interesting and various shapes within the istmus, which can lay as the base for where to place the building/how to divide the area (phases..?)
After having looked at which connections/links are most important, and pointing these out, a modication of the grid/net seems locical. Wind is one of the main issues, and therefor long straigth roads and streets are not advisable, therefor by giving the roads a more irregularshape and creating some points where the road breaks, one is able to avoid creating big vindtunnels and also to create a more interesting walktrough the area. These breaks together with the smaller and narrower streets also create dierent spaces within (where roads cross etc) and shape the dierent quartiers.
Main links and movements within the site.

When planning the di f ferent phases, considerat ion has been taken to which func t ions are needed in the nearest future, at the same t ime establ ishing a coherent c i t yscape with natural r ythm and cont inuat ion a l ready f rom the f i rst phase. To avoid too many empt y bui lding lots, some of the blocks wi l l be planted with smal l t rees and meadows to create a temporar y park whi lst developing the new area.

The third phase wi l l f i l l the rest of the space in the new s i te, and K laksvík wi l l now be a home to a new dense, var iated and dynamic c i t y center, which can later

THE ME THODBy Plac ing a regural dence gr id over the exist ing c i t y, a st ruc ture re lat ing to the exist ing c i t y pattern - which is mainly or iented acording to the contures of the landscapes, appears and grabs onto the t wo s ides of the c i t y pul l ing them towards the middle.By stretching and t wist ing the net , a more diverse and f lex ible struc ture appears, en-abl ing the new architec ture to take place as wel l as connec t ing some of the main roads with the surrounding area.
By point ing out the most impor tant l inks and connec t ions, a modif icat ion of the gr id seems logical . As wind is one of the main issues in K laksvik , long stra ight roads are not advisable and therefore, a more i r regular shape with ’broken- gr id-pattern’ of roads wi l l avoid creat ing large windtunnels a lso enr iching the user ex-per ience. These breaks together with the smal ler and narrower streets a lso create the var iet y of spaces within the area and shape the di f ferent quar t iers .
THE RESULTFishnet appl ied to the exist ing bui ldings and roads wi l l connec t the t wo mountains and shores, creat ing a diverse space for new blocks and bui ldings, leading the users towards the centre - the Isthmus. The streched net wi l l a l low for var ious urban spaces as wel l as architec tural focal points, contr ibut ing to the creat ion of a v ibrant , pedestr ian-fr iendly and coherent c i t y centre.

QUALITIESThe access to the waterThe near landscape
ISSUESStrong wind and lack of shelterLack of coherrence
GOALSCreate a dense and var iated c i t y center, with diverse uses and shelter f rom the wind
To maintain K lak viks ident i t y as a c i t y by the sea , and instead of changing i t , mak ing i t better with of fset in the exist ingRecreate the shorel ine, that was lost when the isthmus was establ ished
K laksvík , a town surrounded by the unusual and spec tacular landscape, st rongly re lated to the f ishing industr y, spor ts , music and culture, i s cer ta inly the c i t y of a great potent ia l . Yet , i t lacks the major strucutre and coherence – the c i t y centre and the l inks connec t ing the t wo s ides of the town. With major i t y of open spaces and scattered bui ldings in the centra l area exposed to the strong wind, i t appears to be the 'dr ive -through' p lace, instead of being the main point of attrac t ion. This a l l , however, can be understood as a great oppor tunit y for creat ing a higher qual i t y urban space, and which is going to be addressed in the AT TROLA proposal .
K l A K S v í K AS A vIBR ANT & COHERENT CIT Y DE vElOPED WITH RESPEC T TO EXISTING IDENTIT Y AND lOC Al TR ADITIONS
AIMS:- To l ink the t wo seperated s ides of town by providing the coherent infrastruc ture and mul i t func t ional spaces in the centra l area- To prevent the wind by densi fy ing the open areas with the bui l t s t ruc tures- To improve the qual i t y of ever yday l i fe by introducing a diverse and a mult i fuc t ional c i t y centre- To make the most out of the exist ing
THE INSPIRATIONThe f ishnet , such common f ishing tool of a s imple and regular gr id struc ture, yet , h ides a much deeper meaning behind.I ts regular, though f lex ible struc ture p laced over the K laksvík area , connec ts the new centre with the exist ing (a l ready gr id-pattern) infrastruc ture, creat ing at the same t ime a space for innovat ive architec ture. I t prevents the Isthmus f rom the wind by avoiding the stra ight roads, and f inal ly encourages fur ther develop -ment across the whole c i t y according to the same pattern. The f ishnet placed over K laksvík , as the AT TROLA express ion says ( to gather, to col -lec t ) wi l l gather and ’capture’ the uses and func t ions of the town, br inging i ts inhabi-tants together in K laksvíks Cit y Centre.
THE MARITIME CENTERK laksvíks locat ion bet ween t wo BAYS of fers great poss ibi l i tes for water ac t iv i -t ies. On the nor thern bay - K laksvík , the rowing c lub is located as this i s where the annual rowing competit ion take place. Meanwhi le the southern bay - Borðoyar vík - being more exposed to the wind, i s ideal for d i f ferent water ac t iv i -t ies such as wind and k i te sur f ing etc.
THE L INKSThe concept of the f ishnet a l lows to develop K laksvík according to the same pat-tern as wel l as to connec t the c i t y bet ween the t wo f jords and mountains
THE FUTURE DE VELOPMENTThe unbui l t areas wi l l remain open, temporar i ly ser v ing as catt le f ie lds and recre -at ional areas, unt i l the fur ther developent of the c i t y towards the southern f jord wi l l take place.
INFRASTRUC TUREThe major i t y of the exist ing infrastruc ture wi l l be reta ined, however, the t raf f ic wi l l be diver ted a l lowing for the secure spaces
THE WALKThe promenade cont inues a long the shore leading to the mountains. of fer ing a range of recreat ional uses
THE NE W BOATHOUSESThe new boathouses placed a long the harbour wi l l provide better c i rcumstances for the boat- owners and give space to smal lerreta i lers of fer ing a var iet y of exper iences for the users
