When planning the different phases, consideration has been taken to which functions are needed in the nearest future, at the same time establishing a coherent cityscape with natural rythm and continuation already from the first phase. To avoid too many empty building lots, some of the blocks will be planted with small trees and meadows to create a temporary park whilst developing the new area. In the second phase the buildings around the shore and the main links will me implemented as a continuation of phase one. The majority of the building blocks will now be with some built structure. The third phase will fill the rest of the space in the new site, and Klaksvík will now be a home to a new dense, variated and dynamic city center, which can later KONSEPT//CONCEPT ÆTLAN//STRATEGY NUVERANDI BYGNADUR//EXISTING STRUCTURE THE FISHNET PEDESTRIAN MOVEMENT//OPEN SPACES BUILT STRUCTURE INFRASTRUCTURE AND OPEN SPACES TRAFFIC TRAFFIC BLOCK STRUCTURE FUNCTIONS 0-10 YEARS 10-20 YEARS 20-25 YEARS TÍÐARÆTLAN//PHASES THE METHOD By Placing a regural dence grid over the existing city, a structure relating to the existing city pattern - which is mainly oriented acording to the contures of the landscapes, appears and grabs onto the two sides of the city pulling them towards the middle. By stretching and twisting the net, a more diverse and flexible structure appears, en- abling the new architecture to take place as well as connecting some of the main roads with the surrounding area. By pointing out the most important links and connections, a modification of the grid seems logical. As wind is one of the main issues in Klaksvik, long straight roads are not advisable and therefore, a more irregular shape with ’broken-grid- pattern’ of roads will avoid creating large windtunnels also enriching the user ex- perience. These breaks together with the smaller and narrower streets also create the variety of spaces within the area and shape the different quartiers. THE RESULT Fishnet applied to the existing buildings and roads will connect the two mountains and shores, creating a diverse space for new blocks and buildings, leading the users towards the centre - the Isthmus. The streched net will allow for various urban spaces as well as architectural focal points, contributing to the creation of a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly and coherent city centre. Yet, it lacks the major strucutre and coherence – the city centre and the links connecting the two sides of the town. With majority of open spaces and scattered buildings in the central area exposed to the strong wind, it appears to be the 'drive-through' place, instead of being the main point of attraction. This all, however, can be understood as a great opportunity for creating a higher quality urban space, and which is going to be addressed in the AT TROLA proposal. KLAKSVÍK AS A VIBRANT & COHERENT CITY DEVELOPED WITH RESPECT TO EXISTING IDENTITY AND LOCAL TRADITIONS AIMS: - To link the two seperated sides of town by providing the coherent infrastructure and mulitfunctional spaces in the central area - To prevent the wind by densifying the open areas with the built structures - To improve the quality of everyday life by introducing a diverse and a multifuctional city centre - To make the most out of the existing THE INSPIRATION The fishnet, such common fishing tool of a simple and regular grid structure, yet, hides a much deeper meaning behind. Its regular, though flexible structure placed over the Klaksvík area, connects the new centre with the existing (already grid-pattern) infrastructure, creating at the same time a space for innovative architecture. It prevents the Isthmus from the wind by avoiding the straight roads, and finally encourages further develop- ment across the whole city according to the same pattern. The fishnet placed over Klaksvík, as the AT TROLA expression says (to gather, to col- lect) will gather and ’capture’ the uses and functions of the town, bringing its inhabi- tants together in Klaksvíks City Centre.

A CITY RESPECTING ITS HISTORY

A DIVERSE CITY

By placing a regular dence grid over the existing city,we get a structure that relates to the existing citystructure which is mainly orientated with the landscape/conturelines, as well as it grabs onto the two sides and pulls them towardsthe middle (the site).

By stretching and twisting the net, a more diverse and exible structure appears, which also has the ability of connecting tosome of the main roads and connection in the surrounding area, and in that way lead into the new space. It also gives some more interesting and various shapes within the istmus, which can lay as the base for where to place the building/how to divide the area (phases..?)

After having looked at which connections/links are most important, and pointing these out, a modication of the grid/net seems locical. Wind is one of the main issues, and therefor long straigth roads and streets are not advisable, therefor by giving the roads a more irregularshape and creating some points where the road breaks, one is able to avoid creating big vindtunnels and also to create a more interesting walktrough the area. These breaks together with the smaller and narrower streets also create dierent spaces within (where roads cross etc) and shape the dierent quartiers.
