John Lasher

John Lasher, ( Magdalena Klock, Fredrick Klock, Honjost Klock, Hendrick Klock ) was born in St. Johnsville, New York on August 24, 1842. John was the son of George Lasher and Magdalena Klock. Fredrick Klock married Magdalena Lara Klock, his second cousin, so John had two connections back to Hendrick Klock.

John Lasher served in the Civil War. He volunteered on August 26, 1862 with Co. A , 115th Regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry. For volunteering his family received $25.00 from the town of St. Johnsville and $48.00 from the County of Montgomery. The 115th moved on August 30, 1862 to Sandy Hook, Md. John was assigned to the 8th Corps at Harper’s Farry, West Virginia where his unit was captured by Col. Niles and on September 15, 1862. His unit was sent to a Parole Camp until exchanged in November 1862 and sent to Washington DC. John served in several units during the Civil War, taking part in several battles. On some point the served with Capt. C.N. Ballon who would later marry John’s sister, Anna Margaret Lasher.

At a battle at Olustee, Florida on Feburary 20, 1864, John was shot in the left ankle and captured by the Southern Forces. Several colored troops that fell in battle at Olustee were shot or left to die in the field while John was taken prisoner. He was taken to Tallahassee, Florida for a couple weeks and then sent to Andersonville prison. He was there for about eight weeks, receiving no medical attention for the injured ankle it became infected and John had to remove the bullet. On Nov. 19, 1864 John was exchanged and taken to Annapolis Maryland Hospital for a couple weeks and then furloughed to Chestnut Hill Hospital until he was discharged the 15th of June in 1865 because of his wound. John kept the bullet he took from his ankle and had it mounted in gold and put on a pocket watch which he carried until he died. He passed this watch on to his grandson, Clifford Pickard.

After the Civil War, he joined a group from Fort Plain and Nellison to search for gold in the lower Rockies. He had some success but not enough to open a mine. John returned to Nellison, New York and married Mary E. Sterling on October 9, 1870. John’s father, George Lasher and his brother, Dewitt Lasher built homes on the west side of North Main Street in Nellison. In 1871 John built a three story brick home which included a large ball room. This venture ended up in foreclosure and in 1889 the building burned. In 1905, John built a home with a meat market in front which he operated for several years. John and Mary had two children ( that I know of ) Maud and Ada Lasher. John died on Jan 24, 1915 and is burried in the Fort Plain Cemetery, on Pickard Lot. Mary Lasher died at 90 years of age in 1941. She is burried on the Lord lot in Fort Plain next to her mother, Adah Nency Bell Sterling.

A Veteran Soldier of the Civil War Dies Rather Mysteriously.

After having been ill but a few hours, Prismas Klock died at mid night Saturday in great agony, the symptoms of his illness bearing somewhat of a resemblance to those accompanying poisoning. Coroner Grube, who was called, does not take much stock in the poison story, but in order to ascertain accurately the cause of death, he decided to hold an inquest, fixing the hour for 10 o'clock this morning, at hose house # 8. James Lester , John Taylor, Charles Robinson, T.E. Wellmen, William Wirtz and Charles Richardson, were impaneled as the jury. Deceased was 61 years of age and was a veteran of the civil war, having served in Co. I, Tenth Michigan infantry. He leaves a son, residing in Bay City, and two brothers, John and Charles of Tuscola.

At the coroner's inquest, held yesterday at the hose house # 8, over the remains of Prismas Klock, whose sudden death Saturday night has been mentioned, the jury found that death was due to congestion of the brain, and not poisoning, as was first rumored. A brief funeral service was held yesterday afternoon from his late residence, 609 Russell street, and the remains were laid to rest in the soldiers' plot in Forest Lawn cemetery.

Ira Klock first's marrage was to Emeline Dolliver. They had three children. Emeline, who died as an infant from Croup. Ira August, and my Grandfather, Jacob Klock. Emeline Dolliver died or divorced Ira. He later remarried a woman named Cynthia. Ira August could not get along with their step mother. Ira, being 10 years older than my Grandfather, ran away when he was about 13 or 14 , to Pa. I think there was family there that he stayed with. Ira August lived and raised a large family in Pa. My grandfather never seen or heard from his brother again. Ira August family is included in this family tree.

My Grandfather, Jacob may have been raised by his Uncle Charles and his wife Fanny Putman Klock. Charles and Fanny divorced or Charles died and Fanny married James Ayles.

I remember my Grandfather telling me when I was young that he had two brothers and a sister, but did not know where they lived or if they were alive or dead. Most the time he would say he was left on a door step or he was adopted and would not give us any information about his family.

My Grandfather put on his delayed birth record that his Father was Ira Klock and his mother was Fanny Putman. Fanny Putman was married to Ira's bother, Charles Klock. My Grandfather was born between 1884 and 1889.

The Moncolm County Clerks office in Mr. Clemens has in the death records as Ira Kluck. The date of death 2/9/1936. Died from Cerebral Artisis Sclorosis. 82 years, 9 months, 29 days.

1880 Michigan Census has Ira and Horace in Jackson Prison. Ira served 3 yrs. 6 months for Larceny. from November 20, 1879 to Sept. 30, 1882. Horace served 3 years for Larceny from Nov. 20, 1879 to May 5, 1882. Prison Records.

From Klock Connections, Issue 24, July 2003

In Search of Ira A few months ago, while looking through Cemetery Records on the internet I found where my greatgrandfather,

Ira Klock was buried. The 1880 Census had him living in Tuscola County, Michigan married to Emeline Dolliver. The 1900 Census Record has Ira married to Cynthia and with five children, Hattie, Mattie, Jessie Ann, Ida and Woodruff. The 1920 Census Records had him living in Oregon with his son Woodruff. The 1930 Census Record had him living back in Michigan in Richmond in Moncomb County.

Ira was born in Jefferson County, New York in 1852/1854 and moved to Michigan with his parents, Isaac Klock and Lucy Hartwick when he was a baby. Ira’s first marriage was to Emeline Dolliver from Bridgeport, Michigan. They were married in Tuscola County on January 22, 1871. According to his marriage license Ira was 19 and Emeline was 17 years old. That would have made him born in 1852. According to his death record he was born in 1854. Ira’s brother, Charles and sisterinlaw, Fanny witnessed the marriage.

Ira and Emeline had three children, Evaline, Ira August, my Grandfather, Jacob. Evaline, died as an infant. Emeline and Ira divorced or Emeline may have died. I have not been able to find any information on her. Ira August was born in 1876. My grandfather, Jacob was born in 1886. Ira August could not get along with his step mother, and ran away to Pennsylvania, never again to return to Michigan. Jacob was given to his Uncle Charles and Aunt Fanny to raise when he was a baby and had very little contact with his father and never saw his brother again.

I went to Richmond, Michigan June 3rd to see what I could find out about Ira Klock. First I went to the Cemetery to see if I could get some information from the head stones. I could not find the graves so I contacted the sexton and he showed me where, Ira, Cynthia and Hattie were buried. No head stones. I went to the City Hall and got a copy of the grave registration record. The grave were purchased on May 16, 1927 by Arthur Salisbury. No dates were on the registration as to when Ira, Cynthia or Mattie had died or when they were buried. I went to the Library, nothing there. I went to the local paper, "The Voice", and talked to a woman named, Debbie I wanted to see if I could find an obituary. She told me all the old issues were stacked up in back. Nothing on microfilm or computer. With out a date of death, she could not look up an obituary. I did not have a date of death that is what I came to Richmond to find out…. She told me that the only place I may be able to find a date of death on Ira, Cynthia or Hattie, was to go to Mt. Clemens, to the County Courthouse. Off to Mt. Clemens… I figured he died sometime after 1930 and before 1950. He was 76 on the census records in 1930. I looked through the death records between 1930 and 1950. I only found one Klock, a Mable Bell Klock who had died Feb. 7, 1950. I found an Ira Kluck who died that died February 9, 1936. Ira Kluck parents were listed as Isaac and Lucy. This matched so I figured that they spelled the last name wrong. Ira’s cause of death was listed as cerebral arthritis sclerosis and his age was listed as 82 years, 9 months and 29 days.

Debbie from the local newspaper had told me if I could find a date of death, she would look in the old papers for an obituary. Debbie gave me her email address so I could email her in case I found a date of death. After I returned home I emailed Debbie and told her Ira’s date of death was 291936. She emailed me Ira Klock’s Obituary.

SOK Genealogy: Lilian E. Klock (No. 350) born June 3, 1883, married Aug. 6, 1907, Gillies Dustan Hodge, born Dec. 12,

1886.Gillies Dustan Hodge, Judge of the second Judicial District of Idaho, is a direct descendent of Samuel Hodge,

born Oct 4, 1686, died May 8, 1764, who married Sarah Dustion, born July 4, 1688, died _____, the daughter of Thomas Dustin and Hannah his wife, the herione who was captured in teh raid by French and Indians at Haverill, Mass, in the spring of 1697.

Forced to arise from her bed, she saw her week old infant killed and its body flung to one side, and then barefoooted and scantedly clad, and in a weakened condition, she was compeled to go with her captors through melting snow in their hasty retreat, accompanied by her nurse.

They walked nearly a score of miles the first day, and were compelled to lie on the wet ground at night with no covering but the darkened sky overhead. This was repeated day after day until they reached an island in the Merrimac river near the present village of Penacook, N.H., where lived the leader of th savages who claimed Mrs. Dustin ahd her nurse as his captives.

There in the wigwam of their dusky captors, they were lodged with his family, which consisted of himself, one other man, three women, seven children, and a captive English boy who had been with them for some time.

Knowing that they would be taken futher North where they would be subjected to other indignities, they resolved to kill the savages and escape down the river. Then in the dim light cast by teh embers of the fire, these brave women, with the aid of the English boy, slew their captors with the tomahawks that had but a short time before, reeked with the blood of their friends and loved ones.

Only two, a squal and a child, escaped and fled to the woods. Scalping the slain savages they bore their trophies away as evidence of their bravery. After scuttling all the canoes but one, and with provisions from the wigwam, they fled down the river and were received by their friends at Haverhill, as persons risen from the dead, where Mrs. Dustin found her husband and children safe.

It is said that soon after her return, she bore to the Governor at Boston, the guns, ten scalps, and the tomahawks, and the General Court presented these brave women $250.00 each as a reward for their heroism.

The island whre the scene occured is called Dustin Island, and on the citzens of Massachusettes and New Hampshier erected a monument in 1874, commemorative of the heroism of Mrs. Dustin, Mary Neff, and Samuel Leonardson, the latter the English lad.

Judge Hodge has in his possesion one of the scalps taken by Hannah Dustin on the above occassion. They reside at Mosco, Idaho.
