E. Agronomic and commercial attributes Sorghum variety CSV 29R is adapted to Rabi

sorghum growing areas of Maharashtra,

Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh (undivided)

under deep black soils. The variety performed

better (>10%) than the checks for grain and

fodder yield. It is tolerant to charcoal rot and

shoot fly. The variety is highly accepted by

farmers and consumers. The agronomic and

commercial attributes are given in detail here

under:

1. Yield superiority

Grain yield: Variety (2553 kg/ha) was

superior to checks M 35-1 (2198 kg/ha) and

CSV 22 (2323 kg/ha) by 16% and 10%,

respectively. The range of superiority in

different years was from 7.2% to 33 3% over M

35-1 and 2% to 13.8% over CSV 22.

Fodder yield: Variety (6791 kg/ha) gave 7.8%

more yield than the check M 35-1 (6297 kg/ha)

and on par with check CSV 22 (6750 kg/ha).

2. Agronomic superiority

CSV 29R showed 5.3% and 3.9% superiority

over M 35-1 for grain and fodder yields,

respectively in Rabi 2011-12 under deep soil

and was on par with CSV 22 for grain and

fodder yields and other characters.

3. Superior performance in States

At States level, CSV 29R showed

superiority over the checks M 35-1 and

CSV 22 for grain and fodder yields in

three states viz., Maharashtra, Karnataka

and Andhra Pradesh under deep soils

from Rabi 2009-10 to 2011-12.

Grain yield: Variety produced 2433 kg/ha,

2728 kg/ha and 2429 kg/ha grain yield in

Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra

Padesh, respectively, and it was superior by

14%, 16% and 51% to check M 35-1 in

Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra

Pradesh, respectively. Similarly, it

performed better than the check CSV 22 by

5%, 14% and 29% in Maharashtra. Karnataka

and Andhra Pradesh, respectively.

Fodder yield: Variety produced 7096 kg/ha,

6590 kg/ha and 5015 kg/ha fodder yield in

Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh,

respectively, and it was superior by 7%, 9% and

11% to check M 35-1 in Maharashtra, Karnataka

and Andhra Pradesh, respectively. Similarly, it

showed performance on par with CSV 22 in

all the three states.

4. Resistance to insect-pests and diseases

CSV 29R was tolerant to charcoal rot

(35.7%), mean length of spread of charcoal

rot(18.1 cm) and rust (2.6%).

CSV 29R was tolerant to shoot fly (dead

heart at 21 DAE 32.9%), stem borer damage

at 45 DAE (16.4%), shoot bug damage

(14.5%) and sugarcane aphid damage (rating

5.44)

CSV 29R had higher mineral elements

content than M 35-1 for Iron, Magnesium,

Zinc, Copper and Manganese.
