HISTORY OF THE KANGAROO MATH COMPETITION

1980

Peter O’Holloran, a math teacher at Sydney, started a math competition in Australian schools. The contest, which was known as the Australian Mathematical National contest,was a tremendous success.

1991

Two French teachers, André Deledicq and Jean PierreBoudine, decided to start a competition in France under thename “ Kangaroo ” ( or Kangourou in French ) to pay tribute totheir Australian friends. In the first few years, the contest grewuntil more than 20 European countries participated. Thecountries jointly formed the Association Kangourou sansFrontieres (AKSF) (Association of Kangaroo Without Borders).

1993

The Board members of AKSF convened a European meeting in Paris. They were impressed by the steadily increasing number of participants in the French Kangourou competition. Other countries decided to adopt the same contest scheme : Hungary, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia and Spain. The Kangaroo remains popular in these countries.

1994

At the European Council meeting in Strasbourg,the delegates of 10 European countries decided to formallyincorporate the AKSF with an elected Board of 6 membersand legal Statutes.

1995 The association was registered in Paris.

1996All country members participated in the organizationof the Annual General Assembly of AKSF. Membership have grown to include countries in Asia, Africa and South America.

2012Malaysia was unanimously elected to join the AKSF in 2012. At the annual AKSF meeting in Cyprus, Mr. Suhaimi Ramly wasappointed as the country representative.

2014 Second year of KMC in Malaysia attracted 20,000 participants.

To support the effort of internationalization of Malaysian education system as outlinedin “Pelan Pembangunan Pendidikan Malaysia 2013-2025”.

To popularize mathematical enrichment activities among students and teachersin Malaysia.

To allow Malaysian school students to achieve certification and recognition froman internationally prominent educational body. Students are then able to include the KMC certificate in their school portfolio.

To increase the participation from Malaysia in the International Kangaroo MathematicsCompetition on par with other established countries.

To expose students to interesting math problem which are designed by internationally renowned math educators.

To allow students to apply their knowledge in Mathematics that they have learned in school.

ADVANTAGES OF KMC

KMC is a unique competition, and it is different from the other math competitions such as math olympiads.

KMC syllabus is less advanced that other olympiad competitions, and students cancompete without any special training.

KMC syllabus is mainly in common with the Malaysian school syllabus. This is differentfrom other competitions which tests knowledge beyond the school syllabus.

KMC is catered to all school students from Year 1 to Form 6 by having six differentcategories with differing levels of difficulty.

CATEGORIES

The competition is an individual, written, multiple-choice test.

The competition will he held on 26 March 2015 simultaneously at all registered schools, to be administered by a teacher in charge.

The paper contains 24 questions with 5 choices to each problem (20 problems for Pre Ecolier and Ecolier).

Each participant will receive an OMR answer sheet to record their answer as well as blank papers for calculation.

Students can only bring pencil and eraser.

The time allotted is 75 minutes.

Students are not allowed to use a calculator during the competition.

COMPETITION PROCEDURE

Register for the competition www.kangaroomath.com.my/registration

Make payment.

On the competition day, the schools conduct the test at their own venues.

School will send the OMR answer sheets to the KMC Secretariat.

The results will be announced and the prizes awarded 3 months after the competition.

One week before the competition, the competition package will be sent to schools.

Schools will enforce the regulations of the competition, especially making sure that the problems are not leaked before the competition day, and that the

problems are not published online until one month after the competition day.

HOW TO REGISTER ?

SAMPLE PAPER & SYLLABUS

Every participant will receive a certificate of participation issued by theAKSF, signed by the Chairman of the Board, Dr. Gregor Dolinar. The top scorer in each category will receive the Grand Prix Award. Other top participants will receive Gold Award, Silver Award, Bronze Award and Honoroble Mention with regards to their achievement.

The registration fee is RM 30 per participant. You can pay either by credit card, direct debit, cheque, bank-in or local order (LO) to Ardent Educational Consultants Sdn. Bhd. (CIMB Islamic Bank Account No. 8600213876).
