The IHAS Connection
While the KMD 550 and KMD 850 are powerful safety
tools in their own right, as part of the Integrated
Hazard Avoidance System (IHAS), their performance
is greatly enhanced.
The KMD 550 is available as part of the IHAS 5000
(for non-radar-equipped aircraft), while the KMD 850
is offered as part of the IHAS 8000 (for radar-
equipped aircraft). The Bendix/King IHAS systems
provide innovative, fully integrated solutions to meet
your safety needs.
IHAS systems encompass each of the four major
airborne safety systems; positioning, weather
avoidance, traffic advisories and terrain awareness.
All components work together to give you a clear,
comprehensive snapshot of conditions impacting your
flight – on one easy-to-read multi-function display.
When it HAS to be clear, it HAS to be capable, andit HAS to be comprehensive … count on IHAS.

SI M P L I C I T Y I S KEYScrolling through menus can delay important
flight safety information. With the KMD 550 and
KMD 850, the screen changes with the push of a
button – instantly displaying a clear picture of
current conditions. Unique Power KeysTM function
as dedicated buttons and programmable ‘soft’ keys
add flexibility for configuration and set-up use. The
KMD 550 and KMD 850 also allow you to tailor
the view of each safety sensor for range, overlays,
etc., and remember your last setting so that you see
what you want to see, when you want to see it.
SU R V E Y YO U R SU R R O U N D I N G SYour flight path is guided
by an extensive aeronautical,
cartographic and topographical
database. The highly
functional design allows you to
view a dozen ranges, from one
nautical mile to 2,000 nautical
miles, as well as use the cursor to determine airport
information, elevation of towers and special use
airspace, to name a few. All this information is
updated through a high-speed,high-capacity, front-
loading data card for quick and
easy database updates.
Turn topography off to
better highlight the airspace,
airports and victor airways.
When paired with the
KLN 94 enhanced interface, the
KMD 550 and KMD 850 display
holding patterns, procedure
turns and DME arcs.
PR E PA R E F O R WE AT H E RThe KMD 550 and KMD 850 are ready forany weather situation.
The KMD 550 and KMD 850
interface with the Goodrich
Stormscope®(WX-500 and
WX-1000E) to provide lightning
awareness at ranges from 25 to
200 nautical miles. The versatile
displays show cells or strikes at 360º or forward-
looking 120º views. A special red icon appears if
lightning is spotted within 25 nautical miles.
The KMD 550 and KMD 850
allow you to take advantage of the
newest technology in the cockpit:
data link weather. NEXRAD
graphics,METARs,TAFs, and a host
of other weather products are
accessible in-flight through the
KDR 510 digital receiver. And weather is just the
beginning of the services available through
Bendix/King WingmanTM Services.
TR A F F I C AS S E S S M E N TTraffic can be displayed via a number of traffic
sensors, including the Bendix/King KTA 870 Traffic
Advisory System (TAS) and the Bendix/King
KMH 880 Multi-Hazard Awareness System (pairing
TAS and an Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning
System), displaying traffic at eight ranges, from two
to 40 nautical miles. The active interrogation, dual
directional antenna system
will track up to 60 targets
and display up to 30.The
bearing accuracy rivals that
of the Honeywell TCAS
systems from which it gets
its technology ––at a more
economical cost for General Aviation.Three levels
of symbology, aural alerting, automatic page
switching (from the screen you’re on to the traffic
page when the system determines a conflict) and
traffic overlays complete the picture for the best in
traffic awareness. For those who need TCAS I, the
KMD 550 and KMD 850 also interface with the
KTA 970 or the KMH 980 Multi-Hazard Awareness
System, in addition to other Honeywell TCAS I
and II systems.
The KMD 550 and
KMD 850 also display Traffic
Information Service (TIS),
which uses the KT 73 Mode S
Data Link Transponder to relay
traffic information through
data link communication with
the FAA’s secondary surveillance radars. Transponder-
equipped aircraft within 3,500 feet above and 3,000
feet below your aircraft will be displayed at ranges up
to seven nautical miles.TIS is the most economical
way to get a TCAS-like view of the traffic around
your aircraft.
MA S S I V E OB S E R VAT I O N POW E RBendix/King brings its
popular Enhanced Ground
Proximity Warning System
(EGPWS), designed for Air
Transport, to General Aviation
through the Bendix/King
KGP 560 and KGP 860 EGPWS, as well as the
KMH 880 and KMH 980 Multi-Hazard Awareness
Systems (where EGPWS is paired with the traffic
awareness of the KTA 870 or KTA 970).
The KMD 550 and KMD 850 make terrain
surveillance effortless. Color shading is clear, and the
displays allow for 360º or forward-looking 120º
views.Terrain alerts are demonstrated by solid
coloring and aural alerts. Your screen will
automatically switch to display terrain when the
system determines a terrain alert.
CO M P R E H E N S I V E CAPAB I L I T YIn addition to displaying
positioning, weather, traffic and
terrain, the KMD 550 and
KMD 850 can optimize your
view through overlays.
Use the auxiliary function
to configure the display to your
preferred settings, including
adjusting the range at which
map icons (such as VORs or
cities) can be seen and setting
the view to track-up or North-up.
The auxiliary page can also be used to display
video, such as the output of forward-looking
infrared (FLIR) cameras. The video input is
NTSC-compatible.
The Outlook is ClearAt the heart of the Integrated Hazard Avoidance System (IHAS), the
Bendix/King KMD 550 and KMD 850 set new standards in situational
awareness, ease of operation and safety for General Aviation. Featuring a
razor sharp, five-inch-diagonal active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD),
the KMD 550 and KMD 850 function both as a display and controller for the
latest in moving map technology, weather avoidance, traffic advisories and
terrain warning. In addition, these new systems feature a unique-in-the-
industry distributed processor architecture that allows you to add processing
power as you add functionality. That way, you buy only the capability that
fits your needs and you can upgrade at any time and in any order.
The KMD 850 is radar-
capable, offering interface
potential to the high-
performance Bendix/King
ART 2000 and ART 2100
digital weather radars.
The ART 2000 and ART 2100 feature Vertical Profile®,
which allows you to alternate between a horizontal
and a vertical view of the storm.
