Tijekom 1932. počinju mu izlaziti sabrana djela u izdanju Minerve.

Born in Zagreb on the 7th July 1893 as a son of a senior officer Miroslav and Ivka born Drožar in Duga ulica 5 (Long Street 5). He finished elementary public school in Zagreb, Kaptol and afterwards also Grammar School in Zagreb (from 1903 to 1908). He enrolled at Pécs Preparatory Military School and completed three school years (1908 – 1911). He won czar’s scholarship for military academy Ludoviceum in Budapest in which he remained two years (1911 – 1913). In 1913 he dropped out from The Academy and he arrived to Skopje across France and Greece to enlist into Serbian military formation as a volunteer. Eventually, he was suspected to be an Austrian spy – he was arrested and sent to Belgrade. He succeeded to move to Zemun, where he was captured by Austrian border police and after the hearing, he was released and immediately sent to Zagreb. Književne novosti (News in Literature) in four sequels, published Krleža’s first literary text – i.e. drama Legend in 1914. He was mobilized and sent to Reserve Officers’ School in Zagreb in December 1915. He contracted tuberculosis and was sent to Lovran, where he was recovering. Later on, in July 1916 he was sent to Galicia battlefield, where he remained for two months. As from September 1916. he stayed in Budapest and he returned back in Zagreb in December, where he carried out different military duties. From 1918 he lived exclusively on writing. In 1919 in cooperation with August Cesarec, he started and edited the journal Plamen (Flame). He married Leposava (Bela) Kangrga on the 14th November 1919 and from the summer of 1920 up to September 1921 he stayed with his wife, appointed teacher in Duga Rijeka. The premiere of drama Golgota (Golgotha) was in 1922, directed by Branko Gavella. That was at the same time, the first Krleža premiere on the stage of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. From 1923 to 1927 he published and edited Književna republika (Literary Republic). In autumn 1924, he travelled to The Soviet Union, and upon the arrival in Zagreb, in 1925, he attended the premieres of Michelangelo Buonarroti (on the 19th May 1925) and Adam and Eve (on the 29th May 1925) directed by Gavella. Both plays are integral parts of drama cycle titled Legends. During the year 1932 his collected works started to be published by Minerva. From 1931 to 1932 he travelled to Brno, Prague, Zbaszyn, Warsaw, Paris. In year 1934 in cooperation with Milan Bogdanović, he started in Belgrade the journal Danas (Today) and published five issues and afterwards, the publication was forbidden. From 1939 to 1940,

he edited the journal Pečat (Steal). In mid April 1941 he was arrested and after several days released from prison and afterwards he lived isolated and was usually sheltered to a sanatorium by his friend, doctor Đuro Vranešić. In 1945 he was one of the editors of the journal Republika (Republic). He was elected as a Member of Yugoslav Academy of Science and Arts in 1947 and he was its Vice President from 1947 to 1957. In year 1950 he started the work on the encyclopaedia as a director of The Institute of Lexicography of Zagreb. He is one of the founders of the journal Forum in 1962. His enormous bibliography, encompasses about fifty books – poems, novels, dramas, short stories, essays, published texts, diaries and discussions. From mid 1977 he didn’t abandon his appartment on Gvozd, but he died in hospital on the 29th December 1981.

Some of his works are translated into Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Italian, Portuguese, Esperanto, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and English language and they were adapted for film, radio and television. His dramas have been performed on numerous Croatian and foreign stages up to date. From 1984 Krleža’s name has been an integral part of the name of The Institute of Lexicography, which also compiled his encyclopaedia Krležiana (1993 – 1999).

ADAM I EVA.

Bog stvori Adama i Evu zajedno s biljkama i životinjama šestoga dana (Post 1, 24 – 31). (Vidi RASPEĆE, Uvod, 9 i 10).

James Hall, Rječnik tema i simbola u umjetnosti (1998.)

ADAM

ADAM AND EVE

God created Adam and Eve together with plants and animals, the sixth day (Gen. 1, 24 – 31). The topic is usually combined with Temptation and Expel. Before early Renaissance, it was usual to invoke God as a Second person of The Trinity. On the other hand, in later works, it was adapted to "patriarchial" type of a God Father. He inhales the life in the nostrils of Adam or extends the hand to transfer the life by means of the touch. In the scene of Eve’s creation, Adam is stretching on the ground, because God cast him into a sound dream so as to take his rib. Although in The Book of Genesis, it was quoted in the second report about the creation (Gen 2, 21 – 2) that Eve was made from the rib after God had taken it from Adam and closed that open hole with the flesh. Therefore, the convention has spread, which represented Eve coming out from Adam’s sleeping body. The second version, represented her staying modestly completely formed, before God. Rarely, the artists have represented the couple without the umbilicus. According to the typology of the Middle Ages, Adam is a figure of Christ, because the first man was of his age, the beginning of its change (dispensatio). Out of the same reason, Eve, great grandmother is a figure of Mary the Virgin, or vice versa the Church itself. (See Crucifixion, Introduction 9 and 10). The tale of creation of the first man out of dust and clay is found in other ancient religions, especially in Babylon. Ovid, retelling Greek myth, describes how titan Prometheus (1) created Man out of the clay.

James Hall, The Dictionary of Arts Topics and Symbols (1998)

ADAM

Hebrew word adam means "the man" in a collective sense (mankind) and The Book of Genesis (Gen 1, 27) where it is said that God created the "man and woman". According to Gen 2, 27 the terms adam and adamah – soil, earth are approached, so as to point out that the man was created from the dust of the ground. But further in the second tale of Creation, the word aquires narrower sense: that the first man doesn’t remain alone, God gave him the fellow who was created out of his rib: she was called išah "the wife", being a derivation from iš "man". Later Adam became the name of a human being (Gen 4, 25).

God situated Adam and his wife Eve in Eden (paradise garden). Under the influence of Eve, Adam didn’t obey the God’s order not to eat the fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge and God expelled them from The Paradise. Thus, the couple for the first time encountered hard larbour, sufferings and the death. Those picturesque and at times naïve tales, express a deep reasoning about the position of a man.

EVE

Hebrew word hawwah is explained as a form of the verb hajah, "to live". According to the second report about the creation in Genesis, this is the name which was given to the woman after the fall, who was created by God out of man’s rib in order to be his companion. "He named his wife Eve, because she is the mother of all human beings." (Gen 3, 20).

Adam i Eva su pred nama

– kako je bilo raditi?

HELENA PETKOVIĆ Veliko mi je zadovoljstvo što me ravnatelj pozvao u Dubrovnik jer me uvijek veseli raditi s novim ansamblima, u novom okruženju te upoznavati nove ljude, nove suradnike.

ŽD Predstava odiše utjecajem popularne kulture, filmskog i glazbenog svijeta.

HP Dosta inspiracije sam pronašla u filmovima Davida Lyncha, pogotovo u filmu Blue Velvet.

ŽD S dijelom tima ste imali prilike raditi i prije.

Mateom Bilosnić i Anom Martinom Bakić. Zadovoljstvo je raditi s maštovitim i kreativnim ljudima kojima daš jednostavan "input", a oni ga razviju u svojim smjerovima, nadograđuju, korigiraju, stvaraju čaroliju.

ŽARKO DRAGOJEVIĆ This is Your first direction in Marin Držić Theatre. Krleža’s drama, You have been working on during last fourth months is the fifth premiere in 2019. Adam and Eve are before us – what are your impressions?

HELENA PETKOVIĆ It is a great pleasure for me, to have been invited by Your General Manager, because I am always glad to work with new ensambles, in new circumstances and encounter new people, new collaborators. I am very happy to work with Marin Držić theatre ensamble and the guests, with whom I earlier cooperated. An interesting excellent team gathered and com-plete atmosphere has been excellent. I have had a privilege to work in exceptionally positive surroundings at the rehearsals and it has been nice to observe the actors’ interaction and sup-port and mutual assistance. I am deeply thankful for this particu- lar actors’ cast.

ŽD Krleža represents a special figure in Croatian literature. Was it demanding for You?

HP Krleža is a classic writer and one of the pillars of Croatian literature and theatre and therefore, it has meant an enormous challenge, but I am exceptionally glad to work on strong and quality drama texts. This particular drama, pertains to Krleža’s early expressionist phase and cycle Legends, which are stylisti-cally and thematically different from his earlier dramas, namely from the cycle of The Glembay Family. I wanted, at least, some-how to retain some elements of the expressionism and symbol-ism, which are maybe expressed in the works such as Michelan-gelo Buonarroti or Christophor Columbus, but which are present in Adam and Eve. I have adapted the middle part of three act drama and I have inserted the texts from the novel On the Edge of Reason and just at that point the game started. Of course, the eternal "existentialism" conflict of the man and the woman, is present, but in this particular dramatic text, it was adapted into completely unreal situations, and even Krleža was con-scious, that his notes on the margins couldn’t and needn’t been realized on the stage and this unreal context, he holds to be inspiring and important and I didn’t want to negate him, but somehow reinterpret him. I didn’t want to consider the text only to be a psychological conflict.

ŽD The performance has the influence of pop culture, film and music world. What are the contact points which are transferred on the main stage?

HP A lot of inspiration has been found in the films by David Lynch, especially in the film Blue Velvet. It had seemed to me that it could be interesting in this play to use the part of the unreal atmosphere, which has been built by Lynch in his film, especially in the middle part which I adapted. That was the point which opened different aesthetics. It seemed to me, that the aesthetics of David Lynch might be well incorporated in this Krleža’s expressionistic world. As an inspiration I used also the movies by Federico Fellini, as well as the aesthetics of San Remo Festival. All those elements have been used only as nuances, as an inspiration, for the atmosphere of our play, but they are not direct quotations. I think that the audience will understand clearly after the performance. It is hard and useless to explain in advance, how all quoted references are incorporated into a new unit.

ŽD Certain well-known compositions, which have coloured the times before us are being performed in this play. How did it happen?

HP I started with film references which directed the choice of the songs. The middle part of Krleža’s drama is transferring into partly unreal and phantastic one and partly realistic, because we follow what is being done to the woman, who has already been dead and to the man who is travelling home by train. This part is set in our performance as a hybrid of freak show and cabaret. It is complete-ly at the edge of real and unreal; it was a basic idea, which direct-ed my reasoning about the play and fostered fancy. At that time, the link with Fellini happened, who has constantly been engaged into "deviations", back sides of the bourgeois and apparently common life in an American province and combine unreal ele-ments with realistic ones. Later on, the link with Fellini opened and his figures from the "edge". The idea of a somehow distorted San Remo appeared, because I grew up watching Rai Uno Fellini and Amarcord – generally on Italian culture. Collaborators and actors, of course added their own ideas, developed the basic idea and thus, the final version appeared.

ŽD Tell us whether adequate technical support has met the requirements of the play?

HP It’s simple to have any idea, but it is demanding to realize it. However, in Marin Držić Theatre, there are people who are enthusiastic and who succeeded in carrying out my ideas. Even the bizarre ones. Therefore, I am very thankful to the supporting technical team and all others, who have made all efforts, so as to carry out my ideas. I have never obtained the answer "no" and I am very happy that I haven’t been limited in my fancy, although some limitations must always exist. It would have been very easy to put on the stage two persons quarrelling in a certain room, but I had preferred to run the risk of being involved into the edge of uncertainty. So I started an adventure in actors’ game and stage design.

ŽD Do we have a chance, today in Croatia to witness the authors, similar directors who maybe think equally or similarily "on the edge"?

HP It’s hard to answer to this question, but I am sure, that young directors and authors increasingly appear, who are exploring some other aesthetics and ways and whose plays are extremely interesting to me. I am extremely happy and content that there are ever more young colleagues with whom I have mutual under-standable language, although we work completely differently. They are, among others, the colleagues who in this season worked in Marin Držić Theatre, such as: Lea Anastazija Fleger or Marina Pejnović. They are exceptional girls and very talented too. There is also my dear colleague Ivan Plazibat with whom I love to commu-nicate very much, Marina Petković Liker, also, Hrvoje Korbar and some other colleagues, not to name them one by one... I think that it is always healthy and good to have quality circumstances and I am glad when colleagues work interesting plays which inspire me.

ŽD You have already cooperated with the part of the team, hav-en’t You? Was it either crucial or relieving?

HP In fact, I had collaborated with Damir Šimunović and Vesna Kolarec previously, but it was my first cooperation with Tea Bašić Erceg, Matea Bilosnić and Ana Martina Bakić. I am extremely happy, that this project has attracted the people, who are quality and excellent interlocutors and collaborators. It’s a great pleasure to work with fancy and creative young people, who have obtained an input and they are developing it in their own ways, built on it, which they correct and create a magic tale. The whole actors’ ensemble, as well as an author team from the beginning started excellently and it has made me exceptionally happy.

O ADAMU I EVI

ABOUT ADAM AND EVE

Now when we talk about Adam and Eve, one of the early Miroslav Krleža’s dramas, in fact about limiting part of the first part of drama cycle of this writer, we immediately start to be conscious, about the justification of our statement, that the arts of theatre is very usually the function of the exaggeration.

If we try to reduce everything what is exaggerated on a psychological level, as well as stage overreaction, up to the point which has lost original embodiment and reality and obtained new dimensions, at once, we will find ourselves amid a poor plot, with so little exceptions of those gathering around one pillar, just to be ready at the moment, to talk about its apparent triviality.

One worn, old and filthy hotel of a large city with the rooms on whose walls there are torn wallpapers and bidets of yellow colour in front of which one worn love is being destroyed, in which ecstasy, has long been transformed into hysteric discon-tent, in which one very unhappy and therefore eternal Eve with her love is tyrannizing the man, who believed that whatever had existed and passed in the end, was just one insignificant casual adventure. These are life-psychological facts as driving dramatic force of Adam and Eve. The metaphor of civil social game should be transformed into the stage game and should be tragically embodied. Therefore, Miroslav Krleža had led this crazy and banal game of collecting and judging trivial confirmations of the fidelity up to the stage of absurdity. The only solution and exit might be found in the death. On the other hand, every stage murder revokes counter-murder and therefore, Miroslav Krleža built this tragic fact on the basis of trivial civil melodrama and on the experience of stage and robust medieval games (for example: French Le jeu d? Adam from the Twelfth century). From one, he took the symbol of the hotel, from the other the symbol of the hell and transformed them into stage symbolic synonyms. Thus, he joined two well-known meanings, besides the third ones, which became stage metaphor of the authenticity of the world of our times. The area of the poetry, as well as in the majority of earlier dramas of Miroslav Krleža is almost always identical, to the area of the author’s marginalia.

captured in their different parts and radii, which represent one typical face, split in several figures: Waiter in a hotel, Gentleman in black, Gentleman with the pipe, Waiter in the underground pub.

This cold, cynical, emotionlessly rationalized face appears in almost all situations of the Man and the Woman, leading them both into the death and waiting them as a waiter in a macabre scenery of the underground pub where they will encounter each other, as unknown persons, who unclearly think that somewhere in life, in ancient times, they must have met, and again started eternal love game of expectations, despair, passion and torment. The Face in black, so discreetly, but unavoidably follow the Man and the Wom-an, is the personification of the Bible story on Adam and Eve and generally of the Christian image of the world, represented by the Devil: some metaphysical evil force, which exists in the world and usually regulates the fates and behaviors of human beings.

Such direct parallelism to The Bible, and modern abstracts, present in all dramas of a series named Legend, only in Adam and Eve (because in all others, the outer frame remains inside historic or mythic space which represents certain threats, first of all falling into a declaration, a schematisation, which is very skillfully avoided by Krleža. During the entire drama, the parallelism could be anticipated, just in the name of Eden hotel and in some repli-cas of the Man in black, i.e. where classical Bible symbolic image under the Tree of knowledge transforms into a hotel room, in which the beginning of the play took place.

When Adam and Eve was published, Miroslav Krleža had already been an experienced drama writer. The text was published in 1922. in Kritika and the author had already published Kraljevo, Colum-bus, Michelangelo and Golgotha, not to mention a series of other unpublished attempts, as well as the fact, that a young writer offered his Symphonies as dramas to the General Manager of Drama i. e. Josip Bach, and quareelled with him and wanted to polemize with him publicly. If Krleža had stopped writing texts for the stage in 1922. he nevertheless, would have entered the history of our drama literature. He, himself considered Adam and Eve,

Michelangelo was put on the stage for the first time alone and it dominated over the evening, because Sotošek celebration was carried out on that occasion with usual speeches, gifts etc. On the first reprise on the 29th 1925 it was performed one-act-drama Adam and Eve, written in 1922. It was directed by Gavella and Babić, who solved the problem in an inventive way to show the transforming of the plot from reality into unreality. He applied a brave technical news: in the backstage: coiled black textile was unwrapped, on which there were symbolic fragments of the milleu (hotel room, tomb, train coupe, burnt house, Eden’s gar-den) represented by white surfaces and lines. The roles of sym-bolic Adam and symbolic Eve were in the hands of Ivo Raić and Nina Vavra. Their conflict, in the outburst of infernal hatred was suggestive as well as the realization of the ill-fated reckoning, between the male and the female. The role of certain chronicle writer has been taken by Dubravko Dujšin (Waiter, A Man in black) who was distinguish sarcastic by sounding the bronze organ onto a mute intonations. One reviewer didn’t know to write anything about Dujšin, and wrote that Man in black didn’t have black suit...

Drama starts with an excited, furious dialogue between the Man and the Woman who in a filthy hotel torment each other third night consecutively, not having solved anything, because nothing could be solved – all that has been present from the ancient days: situation, in fact is general and rather banale. Krleža didn’t in-dulge into psychological differentiation, analysing exclusively expression of the conditions in collecting short explosive exclama-tory and interrogatory sentences. The situation of Janez and Anka is present, but only with reverse roles: The man is the one who wants to interrupt, the woman cries, she is consternated, she implores. But in developing the dramatic plot, Krleža used differ-ent dramaturgy from Kraljevo. While it meant an open dramaturgy, which is being developing in an infinite progression, without firm initial and final point. In Adam and Eve, we face the procedure, which we will call cyclical dramaturgy. The axis of the circle, on which the Man and The Woman are circulating, where they are

to express or the interest for a new fact has lead him to this thesis. Probably, both statements are true. Anyhow, drama Adam and Eve witnesses this transfer. By means of its original spontaneity and its consequent features, the drama witnesses the transfer.

Pavao Pavličić, How Krleža’s drama Adam and Eve was compiled? (2003)

one of his works, with which he was not satisfied and which he somehow rejected. He declared it on a significant lecture in Osijek in 1928. The review conisdered this drama as a begginner, and to date, it has barely been written anything, but side com-ments and notes.

It is not clearly known the source of this type of judgement, neither by literary criticics or literary historians. The reason of an unfavourable assesment of Adam and Eve is not the topic of the drama, i.e. male-female relationship in the most general sense of the world. Namely, Krleža dealt with those relationship later, even in his most famous dramas (f.e. U agoniji = In Agony) and those dramas were widely accepted both by the author as well as by the critics. On the other hand, the reason of an unfavourable judge-ment was not in the tenor of that work, which we could call not only expressionistic, but pathetic. The reason is that other earlier texts – such as f.e. Kraljevo – which contained that feature and even more significant are considered to be more precious than Adam and Eve and Miroslav Krleža had better opinion about them. Finally, it is hard to believe that due to general reserve towards Adam and Eve, it might have been the message of the drama itself. It states that in the relations between the sexes nothing has ever changed, but it is being repeated, from the beginning of the world, up to the twentieth century. This message – to use Krleža’s term, has been repetedly used in numerous places. Many other authors had used it both in Croatian literature and European culture, therefore, it couldn’t be neglected. (...)

The sufferings in male-female relationship, had to be dealt with, so as to join two instances: banality of everyday life and eternity of metaphysical dimension.

On the other hand, to show that everything is revolving, Man and Woman had to be given chance to live. Death and Other World had to be introduced in order to ascertain that the move-ment of a world is based on it. Bible themes must occur and therefore, having wanted to express a simple idea (and in addition to it not significantly new, but maybe now in the twenty ninth year of the life, supported by his own experience), Krleža had to lead his own drama in a way he conducted it.

By doing so, he partly relied on his former dramas, and he partly put steps into something new. It is hard to say, whether this new fact – reality – he entered, because of the thesis, he wanted
