The Knife Another of the Assassin's "Tools of the Trade"

Knife fighting qualification Badge-(above) Adopted by the AMERICAN COMBAT KARATE ASSOCIATION in

1989, from the French Foreign Legion-Paratroop unit. It was adapted widely in the 1970's as the

unofficial "Mercenary's insignia". The badge is awarded as a Diploma after completion the 16 clock-hour

Basic Knife Combat course.

For centuries, those involved in human conflict who were unwilling or simply not inclined to practice a

martial art have turned to various "tried and true" TESTED personal weapons. The KNIFE is one such

weapon.

Every Army in the world teaches some form of hand-to-hand combatant, with that, some form of Knife

fighting. Numerous law enforcement agencies throughout the country conduct KNIFE COMBAT

INSTRUCTION COURSES for their officers as a last-ditch defensive tool.

Notice Police Pistol belts in photo below:

The Knife is a simple, practical choice. What follows is a distillation of research from historical military

manuals on knife and bayonet fighting. Some of these manuals include those coming from the 1st and

2nd World Wars.

..."I have often wondered how VICTIMS OF RAPE, MUGGING OR HOME INVASION would haved done if

they simply would have had completed some training in Knife fighting and habitually carried a sturdy,

LEGAL, razor-sharp lock-blade knife"...Rich Dallas Security Specialist

Left Hand and Foot Forward

Right Hand To The Rear

The illustration (above) shows one manner of facing the target. The Knifer is in a crouch, with knees

bent. The left hand and foot (This is called a "left lead") are well in advance of the right foot. The blade is

held in the right hand by right hip. (This prevents the target from grabbing and immobilizing the knife-

wielding hand).

The left hand is up, and is used to parry or to clear a path for the knife. This is done by trapping or

immobilizing any of the targets limbs that may get in the way.

Another example-"Left Lead" (below):

Right lead

Another way of facing the target is with the knife-wielding hand forward. (This is used primarily when

the target himself opposes one with a blade of his or her own). This presents the knife as far forward as

possible. Notice in the illustration (above). This is called the "right lead" or sabre fencing stance. The

attacker on the right lunges and tries to stab low to the leg while the defender on the left avoids the

attack and counters with a hand cut to his opponent’s knife hand.

Illustration (below) shows a similar situation. The attacker on the right over-extends his lunge, exposing

his knife-hand to a disarming COUNTER cut.

Proper Knife Grip:

The handle of the blade should lay across the base of the palm to the base of the index finger. This

allows greater flexibility in manipulating the blade and for controlling the angle of the cutting edge in

relation to the target.

ANGLES OF ATTACK:

No matter what type of hand-held weapon the Counter-Terrorist operative (Assassin) may need to use,

there are only a few ways in which to deliver an effective attack. (This applies to Knife fighting or Impact

Weapon attacks). We describe these attacks in terms of the angle from which the weapon may begin.

Looking at the diagram (below), you will see that there are 9 basic "angles" from which the weaponapproaches the target.

The diagram (above) is taken from a recent military manual on Combatives. It is applicable to ANY type

of weapon whether it is a knife, a baton, a stick, a club, a fist, foot, elbow or knee strike.

Any striking technique you may use travels in one of two manners and ONLY two:

•Along a straight path (line). An example is a STRAIGHT punch or thrust; a jab shoots straight out and

back from the shoulder. A straight stab or thrust with a knife travels in a straight line. The ANGLE can be

to either of the No. 5 spots on the diagram.

•Along a circular path (curved/elliptical). An example is the hook punch or the "round-kick"

Again, these are called PATHS. The ANGLE of that path can be along any of the 9 angles on the diagram.

In the 16-hour Knife fighting Course of the American Combat Karate Association, there is a significant

amount of time spent on drills that make the paths and angles almost a matter of habit.

Styers Knife fighting excerpt:

Let's look at the knife from the perspective of one who may have to face an Assassin armed with one. As

the next illustration from a WW2 military manual portrays, the Assassin armed with a knife and trained

in Some form of Knife fighting is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!

Advantages to the knife:

•Knife fighting skills are easy and quick to learn.

•With no prior Martial Arts training at all, one can learn, with just a few intense hours of instruction and

practice, to use a knife with FEARSOME effectiveness. The knife can act as a stand-alone fighting art all

by itself.

•The Knife a enhances the practical effectiveness of a martial art one is already skilled in.-It is not

advisable to unlearn all the habits and skills you may have spent YEARS developing. You would better off

integrating Knife movements, thrusts, cuts and slashes into movements you ALREADY know how to

execute well.

•They're cheap.

•Plentiful

•Concealable

•Effective

•Disposable

Disadvantages: According to the article entitled: "Blood." World Book Encyclopedia. Chicago: World

Book, 1998: 407.An adult who weighs 160 pounds has about 5 quarts (4.7 liters) of blood. The reality is,

they can be MESSY! Imagine taking a 1 Gallon can of red paint and pouring it all over oneself from head

to foot. That's what you could be facing if you sever a major artery and let the target bleed out all over.

Once doused in blood the target will become very slippery and VERY DIFFICULT to manage; especially

when they are fighting for their life. It is for this reason that you will see descriptions of "sentry removal"

techniques in which the Soldier is advised to approach from the rear, clamp one had over the mouth and

nose and drag the sentry backward off balance.

From a Law Enforcement perspective, knife attacks & homicides leave a trail of D.N.A. that may be

traced tracked directly back to the suspect. And a spray-on compound called "LUMINOL" can make even

faint traces of blood glow in the dark.

Although numerous cultures have contributed to the art of Knife Combat down through the centuries,

the most highly developed forms of Knife-Fighting seem to have come from the Phillipines.

One would be hard-pressed today to find an instructor of Knife fighting who is not familiar with at least

some of the Philipino styles. Some Knife fighting styles can be extremely complex; at times overly so.

There are 25 or so styles of Knife fighting martial arts with HUNDREDS of different techniques! Out of

those hundreds of techniques, what one needs to do is DISTILL the techniques down to just a few of the

very simplest and easiest to learn.

Although the 16 clock-hour Basic Knife Combat course is sound, we have been considering adapting the

following text by Michael D. Janich and REQUIRING our students to have a copy.

Push-Dagger:

The Push Dagger, with its cross-blade handle, is a compact concealable blade with ENORMOUS

penetrating and cutting power. It is also very stable in the hand. This example happens to be made of a

plastic and fiberglass composite

See our page on Push Daggers. (link above)

Methods of Concealment:

Shoulder Harness

The shoulder harness, like the shoulder holster, can keep your protection discretely hidden yet

immediately accessible in an emergency. It can be worn under a suit or sport coat, (right or left hand

access) or under a leather jacket.

Page 15: Knife Fighting

Wrist Sheath

The wrist-sheath can conceal a balde while wearing a loose-fitting long-sleeve shirt, coat or sweater.

Horizontal Small-of-Back

The horizontal small-of-back keeps your blade concealed and out of the way but accessible. Not suitable

for a slow dance in a barroom...(eh she'll know!)

Smaller blades can even be concealed under a loose fitting tee-shirt...
