Brother Knights ~~ The most recent issue of our Columbia magazine

included a story from the Opening Business Session of this year’s Su-

preme Convention, held in Philadelphia, August 4-6. This story report-

ed on the plight of Christian refugees in the Middle East, and spoke of

how, earlier in the day, the 100’s of Bishops and Archbishops, attending

the convention, had joined our Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson, at a

press conference to raise public awareness about the suffering of our

fellow Christians in Iraq and Syria.

During his annual report, our supreme knight spoke passionately of how “we,

as Knights of Columbus, are called to stand in solidarity with all those Christians

around the world who are suffering from violent persecution, and to offer spiritual and

material assistance to these victims of crimes against humanity.” And to that effort, he

announced a “Season of Truth,” and is urging his brother knights to pray daily for

these Christian brothers and sisters of ours – “for their perseverance in faith and hope,

for the improvement of their living conditions, and for the restoration of peace and jus-

tice in their land.”

You may well be aware of how we knights have already donated more than $4

million to relief efforts in Syria and Iraq through the KC Christian Refugee Fund – but

more is desperately needed, and so each local council is being encouraged to participate

in what is called the Knights of Columbus Refugee Cross Program. And for now, I

simply invite you to our next general meeting on November 10 to find more about this

Pumpkin Carving Party We had a very successful Pumpkin carving party this past month. We had over 50 kids carving pumpkins and some adults. It was such a nice day so this was the first year we actually carved pumpkins outside in the sun-shine. We started with 65 pumpkins and by the time the day was completed we had 12 pumpkins left. We missed a few of the regu-lars to a local soccer competition, so maybe next year we will try a better date. Everyone brought great snacks to share and we had a ton of left over food, especially deserts !!!! The huge pot of Chili went over well and was al-most gone by the end. The kids seem to have a ball doing it. It is fun to see them return every year now. Some are getting "too old" now to carve pumpkins, but they still come to watch the little ones do it. That is kind of neat to see. If you missed it this year, we hope to see you next year.

Family Project

November

Because the Lord is the God of our ancestors, we want to strengthen the relationships between our family's generations. Our family defines each and every one of us. Because our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents chose life, we are here today. This month, thank God for the gift of your family.

Meditation From Pope Francis’ message to participants in the 47th social week of Italian Catholics. For the Christian community the family is far more than a “theme”: It is life, it is the daily fabric of life, it is the journey of generations who pass on the faith together with love and with the basic moral values. It is concrete solidarity, effort, patience, and also a project, hope, a future. All this which the Christian community lives out in the light of faith, hope and charity, should never be kept to oneself but must become, every day, the leaven in the dough of the whole of society for its greater common good. Hope and a future presuppose memory. The memory of our elderly people sustains us as we journey on., The future of society … is rooted in the elderly and in the young — the latter, because they are a living memory. A people that does not take care of its elderly, its children and its youth has no future, because it abuses both memory and promise. 1. Who is one person in our family whose faith shaped my own? What

strengths does each member of our family have? 2. What are some ways our family tries to live out belief in God and his

Church? Which virtue seems to be particularly strong in our family — faith, hope or charity?

3. Why is keeping alive the memory of our history, our family roots, important to shaping the future?

Making a family tree is a great way to celebrate your ances-try and learn about the past events that have shaped each family member to be who he or she is today. During this month, re-search your family history, seeing how far back you can trace. Gather copies of old photos and era-related items to accompany your information. Further connect with your family by corresponding with grandparents or other relatives who do not live nearby. Send them photos, letters, or a “Thinking of You” card signed by the whole family. Set aside time to regularly visit the graves of deceased rela-tives and to pray for them.
