In his homily, Cardinal Collins re-flected on the Gospel account of Jesuswalking on the sea and calming the wa-ters as the frightened Apostles were tossedin a boat, and said that amid the manystorms of life, Christians must turn tofaith and prayer.

“The Lord who sends us is the Lordwho saves us,” he said, urging the faith-ful to utter the words of Peter, “Lord, save me,” when difficulties arise.

Alluding to the first reading from theprophet Jeremiah, the cardinal said, “Evilis real, but we face it with songs of praiseof God, only because we can recognizethe hand of God.”

Among recent examples of “unspeak-able evil,” the cardinal pointed out thekilling of Father Jacques Hamel in aFrench village church while he was of-fering a weekday Mass for a handful ofparishioners. Father Hamel “offered alsothe holy sacrifice of his life in martyr-dom,” the cardinal said.

The liturgy was celebrated as a VotiveMass for the Family, and CardinalCollins made special mention of Chris-tian families, which are threatened by so-cial, legal and cultural pressures.

“The Knights of Columbus has anoble tradition of support for the family, upon which we must constantly build,”he said. “Our Order is an anchor ofstrength in a stormy world, because oureyes are set on Jesus. That is why wecome together for Mass, and why we findrefuge in the storm, in adoration beforeour Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.”

He also cited the Knights’ support ofthe Pontifical Institute for Studies onMarriage and Family and added, “Weneed to address courageously, with clar-ity and charity, the challenges of our sec-ular world.”♦

The initiative is designed to foster anew alliance among parishes, familiesand councils, for the benefit of each, henoted. It also is an ideal program for at-tracting young Catholic men by provid-ing them with the resources to build andsustain the Catholic faith in their families.Citing the Order’s principles of “char-

ity, unity and brotherhood,” the supremeknight said, “If we really mean what wesay, if we really live these principles, wehave an obligation to grow the mem-bership.” The three principles areneeded greatly in the wider culture, heexplained, so by growing the Order,Knights will serve the common good oftheir countries. Also assembling on Monday was the
