As parents of a graduating senior, Laura and I have hosted a graduation party and attended several others. We all spend exorbitant amounts of time cleaning our houses, manicuring our yards, and preparing excellent food for our friends and friends of our kids. We don’t even want to think about the money we have all spent on these 4-6 hour events. This can be said about most of the major events in our lives. We spend lots of time and energy in order to have exciting experiences that are often very short-lived (think Christmas with kids, holiday meals, etc.). Knights’ projects are very similar to these family events. Many of the events and projects with which we affiliate ourselves take weeks or even several months to plan. It is time for our council to plan for the next fraternal year. We need to decide which projects to continue (like Breakfast with Santa, Trunk-R-treat, Easter Egg Hunt and luncheon) and whether we can add a couple of new ones. We may need to decide to replace or even reduce our efforts. Now is the time to provide input for the next year. Please feel free to contact me if you have suggestions!! Jeff Fry, GK

‘Tis the season for First Communions, Confirmations, and graduations! I am willing to bet that the majority of Knights and their families have attended (or have been invited to attend) one of these monumental events in the past couple of months. As parents of a graduating senior, Laura and I have hosted a graduation party and attended several others. It’s Time to Sell Cash Club Tickets – Let’s Sell Out This Year!

We need all members to help sell our Cash Club tickets. The Cash Club is the main fund raiser for the council.

Most of the other fund raisers we put on are designated for a particular charity. Fifty percent of the proceeds

from Cash Club are designated for 501(c)3 charities. The other half can be used for non-501(c)3 charities AND a

portion for council operation. Like any organization we need operating funds for all our projects and activities

such as the Zoo Day, the Bowling Party, the Awards Dinner and others.

People are interested when asked to purchase a ticket. The Club draws a $100 winner every month, two $50

winners at the Parish Picnic, and two $50 winners at the “Breakfast with Santa.” AND, winner’s tickets are

returned to the drum for another chance! Consider buying a ticket and sell tickets to your friends! If you have

Kalahari Resorts 7000 Kalahari Dr, Sandusky, Ohio 44870

State Deputy Kevin Miller & State Treasurer Mark Siracusa

Report of the 120th Ohio State Convention Knights of Columbus - 2019

The 120th annual Ohio State convention was held at Kalahari Convention Centre in Sandusky Ohio on May 17-19, 2019. Delegates to the convention begin signing in on Friday afternoon. The Kalahari convention centre, which restricted the size and location of directional signage, made it difficult for arriving delegates to find the registration room. After registering, there was plenty of time to mill around and meet other delegates because the evening entertainment in the ballroom would not begin until 7 PM.

Page 12: Knights OF Columbus Council #14111zv2npyyxhx138o612ybioyov.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/... · A Winners List is attached to these Minutes. The 250 Cash Club for 2018-2019

At this year’s convention two candidates were vying for state warden. Both candidates are from the Cleveland diocese: Jim Maslach (current assistant to the master of Ohio district 1) and Robert Walsh (Former director of multiple Ohio State programs). Unlike other state conventions, this year’s convention had no hospitality rooms sponsored the various diocese. There was only one room furnished by the state deputy and one room each provided by the two candidates for warden. The state deputy did not open his room until after the evening entertainment ended at 9 PM. Although the candidates were told not to open their rooms until after the evening entertainment, delegates were able to meet in the rooms earlier. In a break from the past 10 years, the state program committee did away with the “Night At The Races” theme for the Friday evening’s entertainment. This year the program committee hired some singers who impersonated Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Junior. Although the changing the type of entertainment type seem to be a good idea, the impact of these three singers in a gigantic ball room was not optimal. A curious fact we learned about later concerns Kalahari’s entertainment rules. The K of C counsel was not permitted to bring in their own beverages and snacks; everything had to be purchased from Kalahari at their rates. cans of Coke and Sprite ended up costing the council three dollars a can. And each keg of beer cost the Council $450. Three kegs of beer were gone in the first hour, and by the time a fourth keg was ordered, many of the delegates were already leaving the ball room. Saturday morning began with Mass. Afterword the cash bonanza drawing was held. And then the presentation of awards took place. At 10 am on Saturday, the business meeting began. Once again our Council 14111 served on the Wardens committee. During the business meeting, a list of resolutions was presented. Of the List of resolutions presented, only resolution 6 (a salute to supreme Knight Carl Anderson) resulted in a debate. Many delegates felt that he had dis-respected the membership by telling us there would be no change in 4th degree regalia and then changing going back on his word and then making is sound as though the membership had voted on it. Although the voice vote on this resolution sounded as if it were a 50-50 divide, the State Officers did not reject the resolution because rejection would have required a 75-25 vote. On Saturday afternoon, our Council 14111 also met in the Area Caucus. In the caucus, we selected a delegate and an alternative delegate to the national convention. After lunch, the business meeting continued. The election of a new warden commenced. As each delegates voted, he was excused from the assembly. Since there were about 600 delegates, voting lasted about 2 hours. That evening, we had the banquet in honor of the state deputy Kevin Miller. Following the meal, there were speeches. Late in the evening, the hospitality rooms re-opened. But I was too tired to attend and chose instead to go to bed. Sunday morning began with Mass. Following Mass, the business meeting recommenced. An announcement was made about Jim Maslach winning the office of warden. Lunch begin at noon. At lunch, the State Deputy concluded various unfinished business matters. After all the delegates were dismissed, we on the wardens committee collected all of the travel card information, tallied it, and submitted it to the state warden. It was 3 PM when our committee finally disbursed.

This report is submitted to Council 14111 on June 11, 2019

By Dennis Jacobs – delegate to the convention
