GRAND KNIGHT’S CORNER Brothers and Families, Thank you for the opportunity to serve you this year, and thank you Brother Jim Dart for the excellent hand-off, and your mentorship over the last year. As we continue our service to our Church, to our communities, and to each other, there will be many chal- lenges we will face in this upcoming year of uncertainty. However, there is no doubt in my mind that we will continue our service, and overcome any challenge as a Council, as a team, and as brothers. A visitor to our Council Home will quickly understand that we have a tradi- tion of accomplishment and excellence. Those accomplishments are a re- flection of service in Faith to our Church and our communities, while keep- ing each other’s backs. Plain and simple, there are just certain expecta- tions: First class organizations do things first class, do the simple things right, and get the job done. None of that changes. Ours is a first class or- ganization. We will succeed and get the job done, and have fun doing it. This hinges on people. My first objective as Grand Knight this year is to involve everyone who can be involved. In other words, I want people to BE a Knight. If we are called upon or if we volunteer for something at Church or in our communities, it’s easier when as many of the hands available are on the job. It’s understood that people have jobs, families, conflicting demands, or issues that pre- clude participation at times and can’t do everything. But, hopefully every- one can do at least something: come to a meeting, respond to a call for help on a project or event, pitch in, or chair an activity or event. We (and I) will be reaching out to get everyone possible into the boat and rowing where they can. Expect the call! My second objective is to bring in new Knights who want to be involved. We want our Council to be vibrant and effective in its mission in the future, to be able to hold events for our members in the future at our Council Home, to support our many charitable causes, and to have the resources to look out for one another. We need to bring in the leaders of tomorrow today and get them learning by doing. The council home is closed until further notice. All scheduled/ planned activi-ties are currently suspended. Update from House Committee: Covid-19 Phase 2/3 We miss you but hope everyone is staying safe and healthy. We have had a lot of ques-tions about when we may reopen the Council Home and lounge. Phase 2 allows us to open

with some limitations and guidelines, primarily dealing with social distancing of 6’, sanitizing, and wearing of masks. Phase 3 will be here soon but doesn’t really affect us as it doesn’t change the rules on social distanc-ing, sanitizing, and masks. We are working on processes and plans to be able to open back up in a limited way mid-July. Our initial plan is to start small and we will be exercising recommendations from State of Virgin-ia and CDC guidelines including Social distancing and wearing of masks. More details will be sent out via email as soon as processes and rules have been finalized and opening date is set. We are working with Council leadership to determine when we can start holding in-person Council meetings and what those rules will be. Now on to the most asked question of the month. Will we be having Friday Night Summer Cookouts this year? Unfortunately, the answer is no, we have decided to cancel the cookouts for the summer. Our biggest obligation to the Council is the safety of the members and we do not feel it would be in the best interest of our members' safety to hold any large social events with food at this time. Hopefully things will change soon, and we can get back to enjoying each other’s company at social events. In spite of the large amount of work and effort that go into putting on the Summer cookouts, the House Commit-tee truly enjoys doing the cookouts and seeing all the members and families each week.

COUNCIL HOME NEWS

Everyone wants to be together in meetings, in service, or on Friday nights. That will return, but we will do so deliberately and in a manner that mitigates the risks. We will plan to hold an in-person meeting, if circum-stances permit, in July—we will also look to ways to broaden attendance virtually. The House Committee is also very deliberately planning ways to safely reopen. There are many unknowns in the upcoming year. We are planning, for the most part, a year of events very similar to years past. But, can we do these events, safely, inclusively, and correctly? Will these events be dif-ferent than before? Can we raise the funds to do them and support our Council causes given this environ-ment? The answer to all these is, “we don’t know.” We will have to learn, plan, and likely alter as we go, and ask for your patience and especially, your input. If you have inputs, suggestions, ideas, questions, or better – time and talent you can bring to bear on a prob-lem, you can reach me at [email protected]. Vivat Jesus

Greetings from your new Deputy Grand Knight. I hope that all are doing well, and are safe and happy. Since mid-March, we have been through many changes and trials. We have stayed at home, changed our facial recognition by a multitude of masking devices, hunted for our favorite toilet tissue and paper towels, washed our hands religiously, and practiced social distancing. Many of our functions over the last two and a half months were canceled. But, we kept our collective heads upward and our council kept serving. We should be proud of the many things we accomplished last Fraternal Year, closing with fantastic support to the Holy Family Food Pantry’s much-expanded operations as a Prince William County Emergency Food Bank which provided tens of thousands of pounds of food. As our Church reopened, we again responded to the call for help, providing addi-tional support that allows our parishioners to attend Mass safely. Thanks to everyone who has stepped forward in these and other projects! As we move into Phase 2 of the reopening, we will need to maintain the practices that keep us safe, and deal with many unknowns. Our summer activities, as of now, are very limited and we will need to be deliberate and prudent as we go forward. Even activities at the end of the summer, such as our new tradition of supporting a welcome back cookout for the school kids at Holy Family, and the Holy Family Fun Festival are unknowns. We will also be forming a committee to examine alternative ways for fundraising that will be safe and effective in this new environ-ment. We are planning further out for some of our normal events and still need new a chairman for two vital pro-grams. We hope to conduct our postponed KOVAR campaign in the October time frame, would like someone to learn the ropes from the current chairman of several years, Brother Matthew Drabik, and then lead the 2021 cam-paign next Spring. Brother Dan Lupinetti has chaired several years of the KCIC Christmas card sales, a favorite with many parishioners—we need someone to step up and take over this program. If you are willing, please contact me. There will be plenty of places for people to help out through this fraternal year, and we’ll need every hand we can get! Thanks for your support, and until next month, have a safe and blessed July! Vivat Jesus! Ray Williams

Support for KOVAR. In March it became apparent that the Pandemic was going to significantly impact many Virginia Councils' ability to do what Knights normally do – to help our parishes and communities. Councils across Virginia have been limited in their normal KOVAR fundraising activities. As of June 1, 2020 KOVAR donations total $213,692. Average donations to KO-VAR the four previous years was $499,000. Average grants awarded those same years was $510,000. KOVAR, like many charities, is in need of help. Brothers, who are able, are encouraged to go to the KOVAR Donation Link and make a personal donation - http://kovarva.org/donate/. Please add you are affiliated with Council 7165. You can also visit the KOVAR Facebook page and see a message from the President of the KOVAR Board of Directors at https://www.facebook.com/kovarva.

Mk 11: 24 - "I give you my word, if you are ready to believe that you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer, it shall be done for you."

After all, GOD SAID IT WOULD! So I ask all of you to call me, (703) 670-6423, e-mail me, [email protected] or tell me in person the names of individuals and/or families who are in need of prayer, whether sick or in distress, and I will include them in this list. The Catholic Difference What does that mean, “Discover the Catholic Difference?” Is it just a market-ing slogan or is there real meaning be-hind it? Let’s look at that at several lev-els. Our Catholicity as an organization forms all that we do. Our Order was

founded on the principles of Charity, Unity and Frater-nity; as a Catholic business we also have core values of Integrity, Professionalism, Excellence and Respect. In all our dealings we try to embody those values in the field and at our Supreme Office. Money from insurance premiums and annuity depos-its is managed by our investment department col-leagues, Knights of Columbus Asset Advisors. They manage that money, now amounting to more than $24 billion, using sound investment strategies in full compliance with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ socially responsible investment guidelines. We will not invest in companies that en-gage in abortions, producing abortifacient drugs, em-bryonic stem cell research, human cloning or pornog-raphy. Our Asset Advisors prove that a business can operate on these principles and still produce a healthy profit. That’s a Catholic Difference! Our charitable contributions of more than $185 million last year went to a wide variety of organizations. Many were Catholic, but some were not. We give money to support worthy causes and we do that, not because they are Catholic, but because we are Cath-olic. That’s what our faith calls us to do; Sirach 40:17 tells us that acts of kindness and charity last for an eternity. We are supporting victims of genocide in Syria and other places in the Middle East. We have placed more than 1000 ultrasound machines in all 50 states and saved more the 1 million lives. We finan-cially and spiritually support seminarians, disaster vic-tims, Special Olympians and many others. All this from the profits of our insurance program and invest-ments and the contributions of members. That’s a Catholic Difference!

And speaking of the insurance program, let’s talk about the “Discover the Catholic Difference” there. Here are a few examples: First, our products are de-signed with our members’ needs in mind. For exam-ple, I’m not aware of any other company that offers a Spousal Waiver of Premium benefit…and there is no additional premium for that! Second, we have never raised our Long-Term Care Insurance premiums, something very few, if any, insurance companies can say. Third, we offer Disability Income Insurance to blue collar workers as well as white and grey collar workers. We recognize that it’s not just the affluent that need that coverage. Fourth, we still meet with brother knights and their families in their homes if they prefer; it might be more convenient for them. Fifth, young children; we want to make sure a mem-ber has the opportunity to protect their insurability with life insurance that has a guaranteed purchase option. Sixth, our fixed-rate annuity has a minimum guarantee for life, meaning a member will always make money on his money. Seventh, our Supreme Office is currently developing new products to meet even more needs of our members…so stay tuned! Now that’s the Catholic Difference! If you’d like to find out about more Catholic differ-ences that could make a difference in your life, let me know. I’ll be around after the meeting and I’d appreci-ate the chance to meet with you. Vivat Jesus!

Our Lady, Queen of the Knights, bless all the activities of our Order. Keep us true to our pledge, to extend the kingship of Thy divine son on earth. Through Thine intercession, win for us the grace, ever to exemplify in our public and private lives, the virtues that should characterize those especially dedicated to the ser-vice of the heavenly court. Make us always aware that as your Knights, we are constantly observed, our faith judged, and our Order appreciated. Accept, O Mary, this renewed pledge of fealty and devotion, of Thy Servants, the Knights of Columbus.

Congratulations to Charlie and Susan Chichester as the JP1 Council 7165 July 2020 Family of the Month!! Charlie and Susan have been married for six years and attend Holy Family, where Charlie has been a member for 30 years. Charlie has been a member of JP1 Council 7165 for more than 25 years. Charlie is a strong supporter to our Council's Bingo program, sub making and sales, KOVAR, help to homeless shelters and the Food Pantry. He also strongly supports the Parish school and youth ministry, and has served with the Arlington Dioceses WorkCamp Program for over 18 years as a volunteer contractor. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic he is also supporting projects serving our parish and congregation. Susan enjoys cooking, baking and traveling. She is the supervisor at the dining facility at Potomac Place, a local assist-ed-living facility. The Chichesters have four adult children who are making their own mark on our community and sharing their time, talents and treasures. They are Daniel, Monica, Jamie and Rachel. Daniel, the oldest, is a welder/heavy equipment mechanic and the father of a brand new beautiful baby BOY!!! Monica is a George Mason graduate with a degree in Psychology and works in the entertainment industry. Jamie has a Masters Degree in Social Sciences and works for the Youth Ministry in the Diocese of Arlington, and is the Assistant WorkCamp coordinator for the Diocese—she also continues to support Holy Family youth ac-tivities. Rachel is a part time student at NOVA. Daniel and Jamie participated in WorkCamp for four years each as campers, and numerous years after that as young adult volunteers. Please join us in thanking them for their time, talents and treasures, and their continued support to our Council and Church.

Congratulations to retiring Grand Knight Jim Dart as the Council Knight of the Month. Jim has served in many ways over the course of his time in our Council. He has led as Chancellor and two (yes, two) years as Deputy Grand Knight. He is a member of the House Committee, and was instru-mental in the success of the 40th Anniversary Cele-bration of our Council. He has worked on many of our Council’s events and fund raisers. But most importantly and with Karen’s support, he provided needed leadership to our Council through a year no one expected. While normal in many aspects and activities, this year was obviously anything but normal. Under his leadership, we supported two State meetings in the popular local venue, Father Griffin Hall. A call from our Pastor took us into the throes of renovation and the weekly chair shuffle for two months. Notably, he led this Council through the past three months. He led through difficult decisions cur-tailing our Council’s normal activities that literally changed our pattern of life, contributed to difficult fi-nancial decisions aligning resources to priorities, and ensured we maintained engagement as brothers ei-ther through virtual meetings or other means. Further, he organized the response when Holy Family was called into service as a County Emergency Food Bank. Through it all, with an even keel, a sense of humor, and a willingness to listen, he served as an example of why the Knights of Columbus exist – to serve our community and Church, and to take care of each other – all evident in the way he led this year. Certainly, a Zoom Meeting was not the way Jim thought he would hand off the gavel, but it was some-what fitting given the trying times he led. We wish Jim and Karen Godspeed as they start their next chap-ter—they will always be remembered for this year (and hopefully will be occasional visitors).

VENERABLE MICHAEL MCGIVNEY ROME – The Vatican, on May 27, announced that Pope Francis approved the promulgation of a decree recognizing a miracle attributed to the intercession of the founder of the Knights of Columbus, Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney, a Connecticut priest who served his flock during the pandemic of 1890, before himself becoming ill and dying of pneumonia. The pope’s action means that Father McGivney can be declared “Blessed,” the step just prior to saint-hood. An additional miracle attributed to Father McGivney’s intercession will be required for his can-onization as a saint. McGivney is best known for founding the Knights of Columbus in 1882. Nearly a century before the Sec-ond Vatican Council, his prescient vision empowered the laity to serve Church and neighbor in a new way. Today, the Knights of Columbus is one of the largest Catholic organizations in the world with 2 million members in North and Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, and Europe. The miracle recognized as coming through Father McGivney’s intercession involved an unborn child in the United States who in 2015 was healed in utero of a life-threatening condition after prayers by his family to Father McGivney. A date will soon be set for the beatification Mass, which will take place in Connecticut. It will include the reading of an apostolic letter from the Holy Father and the bestowing of the title “Blessed” on Father McGivney. Earlier this year, in an address to the Knights of Co-lumbus Board of Directors, Pope Francis said the organization has been faithful “to the vision of your founder, Venerable Michael McGivney, who was in-spired by the principles of Christian charity and fra-ternity to assist those most in need.” “Father McGivney has inspired generations of Catho-lic men to roll up their sleeves and put their faith into action,” Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said. “He was decades ahead of his time in giving the laity an important role within the Church. Today, his spirit continues to shape the extraordinary charitable work of Knights as they continue to serve those on the margins of society as he served widows and orphans in the 1880s. Father McGivney also remains an im-portant role model for parish priests around the world and left us a transformative legacy of effective coop-eration between the laity and clergy. Born of Irish immigrant parents in 1852 in Waterbury, Connecticut, Father McGivney was a central figure in the dramatic growth of the Church in the United States in the late 19th century. Ordained in Baltimore

in 1877, he minis-tered to a heavily Irish-American and immigrant community in the then-Diocese of Hartford. At a time of anti-Catholic senti-ment, he worked tire-lessly to keep his flock close to the faith in part by finding practical solutions to their many problems – spiritual and tem-poral alike. With a group of the leading Catholic men of New Haven, he founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882 at St. Mary’s Church to provide spiritual support for Catho-lic men and financial resources for families that had suffered the loss of their breadwinner. The fledgling group soon became a major force in the areas of evangelization, charity, racial integration, and the defense of religious freedom. Father McGivney spent his entire priesthood in par-ish ministry and died of pneumonia on August 14, 1890— two days after his 38th birthday – after falling ill amid a pandemic. Recent scientific evidence indi-cates that that pandemic – like the current one – may have been caused by a coronavirus. Known by his contemporaries for his devotion to the faith and his embodiment of the characteristics of the “Good Samaritan,” his cause for sainthood was opened in the Archdiocese of Hartford in 1997. St. John Paul II – who was pope at that time – lauded Father McGivney’s principles, stating in 2003, “In fi-delity to the vision of Father McGivney, may you con-tinue to seek new ways of being a leaven of the Gos-pel in the world and a spiritual force for the renewal of the Church in holiness, unity and truth.” In March 2008, he was declared a Venerable Servant of God by Pope Benedict XVI, who during his visit to St. Patrick’s Cathedral cited the “remarkable accom-plishment of that exemplary American priest, the Venerable Michael McGivney, whose vision and zeal led to the establishment of the Knights of Columbus.” Two recent books also tell the story of Father McGivney and his legacy: Parish Priest (2006), his biography; and the The Knights of Columbus: An Il-lustrated History (2020).
