VETERAN’S DAY FOR THOSE WHO CHOSE SERVICE

Veterans Day has, or should have, a deep significance for on this day, we should stop and celebrate the courage of those who have given to our country. For millions of veterans and their families, it’s more than a day at the park, a chance to conduct a sale, or a day off from work. Enjoy the holiday, but remember its purpose is to honor the sacrifice made by so many to protect the freedoms that are too often taken for granted. Veterans Day is for the men and women who chose to serve others when life in America offered so many other less difficult paths. PLEASE remember and honor them for so many have made the supreme sacrifice.

MAY GOD BLESS ALL WHO HAVE AND ARE SERVING THIS GREAT NATION

Veterans ID card signed into law to replace DD-214 WASHINGTON — On July 20, President Barack Obama signed into law the Veteran’s Identification Card Act of 2015 (Public Law No: 114-31). The law directs the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to issue a veteran’s identification card to a requesting veteran who is neither entitled to military retired pay nor enrolled in the VA system of patient enrollment. The law requires the card, among other things, to: (1) display the veteran’s name and photograph, and (2) serve as proof that the veteran has a DD-214 form or other official document in his or her military personnel file that describes the veteran’s military service. The law also directs VA to charge a card fee and states that the card shall not serve as proof of entitlement to any benefits. Extracted from the Oct 2015 issue of Army Echoes

Clergy Appreciation Dinner

Annually the clergy of El Paso Diocese are treated to a dinner. This year was no different. The evening of October 11th was set aside for the event which was supported by Knights and the Marriage Encounter Ministry. Bishop Seitz headed the list of attendees and praised all for their efforts to insure

a successful and tasty dinner.

CHAPLIN'S CORNER

30th Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year B

Bartimaeus was physically blind but there are other forms of blindness. We often acknowledge this

when we use expressions such as, “I was completely in the dark” or “it suddenly dawned on me” or

“it was right in front of me but I couldn’t see it.”

One of the saddest things Jesus said about his contemporaries was this: “they have eyes but they

cannot see.” The Jewish people witnessed the great things Jesus did yet they had no faith in him.

Lack of faith is a more serious kind of blindness than physical blindness.

The main point that the gospel of Mark seems to tell us is that a blind person may have more faith

than a sighted person.

Bartimaeus who was physically blind, had more faith in Jesus than many of his disciples who had

perfect eyesight.

Physical sight is a great thing, a gift which we should never take for granted but spiritual sight is

even more fulfilling because once we have it we are assured of eternal life. Here we have Jesus the

High Priest described in the 2nd

reading as someone who in sharing our human nature has a deep

understanding of our needs.

Coming face to face with Jesus, Bartimaeus is asked: What can I do for you?

“Lord, that I may see.” In the context of this story, Bartimeaus is asking for much more than just

physical sight. His answer is a prayer that we all need to make continually.

The secret of life is to be able to see, to see life’s real meaning and direction, to be people of vision,

to know where God is to be found, where real truth and goodness are to be found. This is the way to

eternal life. Jesus then Tells him; “go your way, your faith has saved you.” At the beginning of the

story we saw a blind beggar sitting beside the road very helpless and at the end of the story, we have

a man who can see, has vision, who knows very clearly where he is going and where he should be

going. He is no longer sitting passively begging for money or help but actively on the way and full of

life again.

He is now fulfilling the Scriptures; Jesus is the way, the Truth and life. Jesus gave him life again

because of his faith and trust in him. We too must make a radical act of faith and trust in Jesus.

The other point we get from this gospel is being Jesus to others. Many people sit at the roadside of

life begging, not for money but for love, for attention, for a feeling that they are important and that

life has a meaning. Unlike Bartimaeus who was very courageous in seeking help from Jesus, some

are embarrassed to ask for help. They are afraid of being silenced by others, by the secularized

society and by the darkness of unbelief.

Let us help someone find purpose, energy, and direction in their lives. An enthusiastic following of

Jesus results in a happy and fulfilled life, a life shared with others. Let us be Jesus for someone

today. Father Alan AlakaFather Alan AlakaFather Alan AlakaFather Alan Alaka

Our Brother's Memorial

and Honor to Veterans

As we focus on our deceased members we remember they stood noble, dedicated to the principles of the Order; Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. Their commitment to service and providing support to a parish. Father McGivney once praised toward us, "We are called to recognize our Holiness' inheritance, to live these precious and sacred realities and become servants and instruments of God's action and Grace." Veterans: We honor Veterans living and deceased always, but especially this month, reflecting on their faithful service. They have accomplished their mission to maintain our freedom, some paying with their lives. Many came home while others are still missing. We stand tall and raise our hand to salute often with tears, then we fall on our knees as we pray; that one day we shall join together and rejoice in arms, in our Lord's heaven. Jose Angel Rubio, Lecture

Holy Year of Mercy

Here is the text from the announcement by the Pope:

“Dear brothers and sisters, I have often thought about how the Church might make clear its mission of being a witness to mercy. It is a journey that begins with a spiritual conversion. For this reason, I have decided to call an extraordinary Jubilee that is to have the mercy of God at its center. It shall be a Holy Year of Mercy. We want to live this Year in the light of the Lord’s words: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. (cf. Lk 6:36)”

“This Holy Year will begin on this coming Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (December 8th) and will end on November 20, 2016, the Sunday dedicated to Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe – and living face of the Father’s mercy. I entrust the organization of this Jubilee to the Pontifical Council for Promotion of the New Evangelization, that [the dicastery] might animate it as a new stage in the journey of the Church on its mission to bring to every person the Gospel of mercy.

“I am convinced that the whole Church will find in this Jubilee the joy needed to rediscover and make fruitful the mercy of God, with which all of us are called to give consolation to every man and woman of our time. From this moment, we entrust this Holy Year to the Mother of Mercy, that she might turn her gaze upon us and watch over our journey.”

FOOD FOR FAMILIES FUND RAISER We are fast approaching the time of year when charity becomes even more important to provide for those families in need. A concerted effort was put forth by council members the first weekend in November to insure as many of those needs as possible are met. Once again the parishioners of Most Holy Trinity came through with donations and those, coupled with council funds previously designated for this effort will provide a much needed boost for the food locker. A check for $2000.00 will be presented on November 15th following the Corporate Communion Mass. Thank you one and all for your donations and

efforts!! Pictured with Brother Jose Holguin is Mary Ann Vega and her

granddaughter. Mary Ann is a "Gold Star" donor that never fails to help. Thanks again Mary Ann, you are the best!!!!!

SILVER ROSE CEREMONY

October 10th, Chamizal National Park

It was a beautiful fall morning in a setting befitting the annual ceremony of

passing a rose to our brothers from Mexico. The Color Guard stood proud in

anticipation of "Posting the Colors" under the guidance of District Warden Will

Garza.

Sir Knights from the 5th District of Our Lady of Guadalupe Province, led by

Master Daniel Colunga, advised by District 1 Former Master Peter Tan and

members of the Knights on Bikes provided the ceremony honor guard .

Squire Jason Cossio of Circle 3557 presented the rose to Texas Past State

Deputy Jacob Gaona with Father John Shannon of Immaculate Conception

Parish (representing the El Paso Diocese), Texas State Silver Rose Chairman

Olie Dangerfield and Squire Nicholas Pena (also of 3557) looking on.

Following an

explanation of the origin

of the Silver Rose and other remarks, PSD Gaona presented the rose to State

Deputy Juan Alvarez del Castillo from the Northeast Mexico Council. SD

Alvarez del Castillo thanked all for their attendance, participation and the

warm welcome

he and his

entourage had

received.

Other remarks were then provided by

Chairman Dangerfield and Diocesan Deputy Roger Hovis.

Silver Rose Mass & Rosaries Scheduled .

Council Recognizes Right to Life Month

Causes Eucharistic Celebration

And Rosary for Life

October is always “Right to Life” month. As sure as the seasons change, equally sure is that our faithful Pro-Life Director Kenneth Parris and our Program Director Carlos Samaniego ensured the recognition and significance of its meaning was not lost to council members by taking appropriate action. It has become a tradition with both of these stellar Knights to coordinate with the Most Holy Trinity Pastor Father and Brother Knight Joe Mollina

for a Eucharistic Celebration for Life. Additionally, working hand in hand with another active parish ministry, the Rosary Altar Society, they also arranged for them to lead us in praying the

Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is always done on the first Tuesday of October (Right to Life Month) and the first Tuesday of March (Month of the Unborn). Following these events the Council conducted the monthly business. Time after the meeting provided a golden opportunity to socialize with attendees. PD Carlos arranged for “munchies” to quell the rumbling in the bellies of those who came right from work and hadn’t had the time to get something to eat. The evening treats saw the Brothers acting as guinea pigs for a taste test of a possible addition to the

Council’s semi-annual Brat Breakfast for scholarships – jalapeno brats! The next "after

meeting snack event" may well see the testing of the Council’s new hot dog machine, Come to the

meeting to see if that comes to fruition. Brother Dave BurgerBrother Dave BurgerBrother Dave BurgerBrother Dave Burger

Remembering Columbus

By Cherishing Family

The Steady Council Course

As the Council did over ten years ago, so too did the Council do this year under their chief helmsman Program Director and Trustee Carlos Samaniego, PGK.

This past October 17th the Council revived their traditional Columbus Day Family Activity to honor the memory of the namesake of our Order and equally important to honor our most treasured possession – our family! With the

assistance of the owner, the “Tejas Café” was for an afternoon turned into the “Knights Inn”, no pun intended on any motel chain. This was the second Council family get-together of the fraternal year, the first being the

installation buffet hosted by Grand Knight Larry Rubalcaba. If you do not recognize all the Knights or wives

accompanying this article, then you have missed too many of the Council meetings, fund raisers, corporate

communions and fraternal gatherings. We urge you to come back and rejoin your family of Knights. We also ask all our spouses to PLEASE insist your

husband’s let us know what other type events you want us to organize. How

about an afternoon of bingo? Would you like an evening at the Carmike Movie

House? The guys favor your spending a hot dusty day at the shooting range. But what do YOU want us to do? Call PGK Carlos at 755-7188 and let him know.

Old Glory Memorial Park A Salute To All Our Veterans

In Northeast El Paso

Old Glory Memorial Park is hard to miss, especially on holidays. The massive forty by eighty foot American flag slowly billowing in the breeze is a sight warmly welcomed by every patriot. Located at the intersection of Diana and gateway north across from Sam’s Club and next to the El

Paso Community College’s Trans-Mountain Campus, the Old Glory Memorial Park is also the site for memorials honoring veterans from almost every war the United States engaged in. What began as a goat head covered lot in 2003 has now been transformed into a lush desert haven. Trees have replaced sage

and benches donated in memory of El Paso families provide welcomed resting spots for those remembering El Paso’s finest. Other ways patriots and loved ones are remembered are with engraved bricks around the base of Old Glory’s flag pole and around the Korean War Memorial. This author has no doubt that they will also be permitted around the soon to be built Vietnam Wall listing El Paso area heroes. Finally, one can sponsor the annual flying of a state flag, purchase a Vietnam Wall commemorative T-shirt from any VFW or American Legion post or from a member at the sight or

leave a gift at the park’s donation box. El Paso veterans are indeed fortunate to have organizations such as El Paso Texas Flags

Across America, the American Legion, and Veteran of Foreign Wars Posts.

Equally importantly it is blessed to have people who care. Folks like the Hamilton’s, Tiller’s, Arriaga’s and

hundreds of other families who willingly have given from their heart and the

treasure the Lord provided them to this noble cause. Won’t you add your name to theirs? To become a permanent part of El Paso history or for more information,

Rosary Altar Society & Council 4497 Team-Up

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our Lady of Fatima 2015 Rosary for Life
October is “Right to Life Month”. It is observed not only by our Order, but by many Christian organizations throughout the United States and elsewhere in Europe, the Pacific Rim and
Australia. As has been done for the past half dozen years, Council 4497 and Most Holy Trinity’s
Rosary Altar Society again teamed-up for their annual Our Lady of Fatima Rosary for Life. Promptly at noon on October 10th, both ministries along with many parishioners gathered in the parish grotto. These same actions were being duplicated by other pro-life groups throughout the
world at the same time. Pro-Life Director and Chancellor Kenneth Parris along with Program Director and Trustee Carlos Samaniego deftly coordinated with the officers of the Society to ensure another seamless annual event for the innocent unborn.
This year the rosary was again led by Rosary Altar Society
Past Presidents and husband & wife team Dave and Millie
DeRuyter. It must be noted that both Dave and Millie are also recipients of Council 4497
Awards for their innumerable contributions to the
pro-life cause. Brother Dave BurgerBrother Dave BurgerBrother Dave BurgerBrother Dave Burger
