State Deputy Message

My Worthy Brother Knights All, My message as we start this new fraternal year is a simple one. First, I want all of you to rediscover what it is about being a Knight of Columbus that you most enjoy and I want you to do that. God has blessed each and every one of us with special talents and through his Grace we are able to use those talents to make the world a better place. Use prayer to quiet yourself from the outside noises and distractions and then listen to His call. God is calling us every day to do his work. I know I hear him every day when I tend to my patients. Nothing is more fulfilling for me. Nothing makes me happier. God wants it that way for each and every one of us. He wants us to be happy. Commit yourself to doing His work and you will find that happiness. Secondly, no man is an island. One of the most valuable assets of your membership in the Knights of Columbus is the opportunity it affords you to meet other men who share the same goals, dreams and aspirations. Make friends this year. My best friends are Knights of Columbus and when we are working together for Him, we are at peace and having fun. Finally, I want nothing more for the State of Washington this year than to make Him proud of our efforts. Our Lord pays attention and he expects a great deal from us! This year, let's have a year that we all can be proud of. Proud of our program accomplishments and proud of growth. We simply must work on growth this year. We need new members and new ideas and new direction to keep us alive as an organization. Don't be afraid to ask that guy you have been looking at in church to join us. He may be your next Grand Knight, District Deputy or State Deputy. That only happens if you give him a chance and invite him to join. To all of you who have accepted leadership positions, I promise that I will do everything in my power to make sure you have a good year. Congratulations on your new positions and more information will come to you at the Summer Leadership Meeting. I have this incredible feeling that "WE ARE JUST GONNA KILL IT THIS YEAR!!!" “Ordinary Time” is a deceptive phrase. Some may think that the term “ordinary” is used to indicate that the time between Pentecost and the First Sunday of Advent is sort of unimportant or that there’s nothing remarkable about it. We usually use the word “ordinary” to describe something that is plain or simple. In reality, we don’t call Ordinary Time by that name because it isn’t as special as Advent, Christmas, Lent or Easter. The word “ordinary” comes from the Latin word “ordo” that simply means order. The Sundays of Ordinary Time serve the purpose of marking the time that passes between the privileged seasons––they keep order, so to speak, as we wait for Advent or Lent to begin. Now, that doesn’t mean that we can sort of tune out or go into passive mode during Ordinary Time. I would suggest that exactly the opposite is true. We should be delving ever deeper into the practice of our faith so that during Ordinary Time our thirst for Christmas and Easter grows. Consider how much richer your observance of Christmas would be if you had been anticipating that feast for months instead of for just the four weeks of Advent. (This year, with Christmas falling on Monday, we barely even have three full weeks of Advent.) Christmas and Easter are the high points of the church year, and we do well to prepare in Advent and Lent, but it seems like those preparatory seasons always sneak up on us and then vanish quickly. I’m not suggesting that we should always be trying to think about Christmas and Easter, but I do think that if we engaged more fully in the liturgy throughout the year, the mysteries of the Incarnation and the Resurrection would become so absolutely central in our lives that we couldn’t help but look forward with great longing for the celebration of those feasts each year. Our weekly or daily participation in the Mass should go a long way toward making Jesus Christ central in our lives, and the more fully we participate, the more effectively this transformation will come about. If we attend Mass as mere observers––bystanders, really––we won’t find that the liturgy brings about much of a change in us. When we actively receive the Word of God and recognize the Body and Blood of Jesus in our reception of Holy Communion, the love of God (we could say God himself) grows within our hearts, and we find ourselves more completely in love with God as a result. When we ponder what happens at every Mass and what an inestimable gift we are given in the Eucharist, we ought to be astonished. We all face the danger, however, of slipping into a state of unappreciation when it comes to the Mass. Rather than allowing the unchanging structure of the liturgy to become the framework that allows for deeper prayer, many Catholics grow bored, thinking that the practice of attending Sunday Mass is monotonous and tiresome. If people really understood what was happening on all these Sundays and weekdays of Ordinary Time, I don’t see how they could ever see this time as “ordinary” in the usual sense of the word. More next month. Vivat Jesus!

State Treasurer Message

Worthy Sirs and Brothers All, While this is my last report as your State Treasurer... I have truly enjoyed the opportunity to serve as your Treasurer and am equally humbled by the election to State Secretary. We are off to a new start and there is never a better time to get your recruiting under way than now. We have not met our Membership goals in several years so let’s do all we can to get there this year. Billings will start soon and our Liability Insurance has stayed the same price again this year ($1.10/member) thanks to the caution and diligence all Councils have exhibited this past year…congratulations to all. State Advocate Message

Brother Knights, Laws, Rules, Regulations – that sums up my job as State Advocate. I am here to assist the State Council on all matters of legal persuasion. I will research and report the facts, but I am not licensed to provide legal advice. If you need legal advice, I can help you find it. I intend to focus on legal and tax related subjects throughout the year that impact Council operations. As the new fraternal year kicks off, pay attention to your filing of IRS Form 990. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires the Supreme Council and each of its subordinate Councils, Assemblies, and Chapters in the United States (referred to collectively as Councils) to file an annual informational tax return (IRS Form 990, 990EZ, or 990N). For purposes of tax compliance, the Knights of Columbus encompasses not only the Supreme Council, but also its subordinate units. Accordingly, all Councils in the United States may be recognized by the IRS as “fraternal lodges” for purposes of the tax exemption granted to fraternal benefit societies under Section 501(c)(8) of the Internal Revenue Code. This means that revenues received by a Council for fraternal, recreational, or charitable purposes are not subject to federal income tax. Most Councils file Form 990N (e-Postcard). Filings are done every year either on a calendar or a fraternal year end. Your first filing will determine your filing year. It is very important that all Councils comply with the annual IRS filing requirements. Failure to comply with the IRS filing requirement will ultimately lead to the revocation of a Council’s tax-exempt status. Those Councils that have had their tax exempt status revoked should apply for reinstatement as quickly as possible to avoid potential tax liabilities. From the date of the IRS revocation notice to the date of IRS reinstating the Council’s tax exempt status, the Council will be considered a taxable entity and therefore liable for any taxes accrued during that period of time. Fines are involved if a Council has to be reinstated – several hundred dollars. So, don’t get to this point. I am here to help you. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Constitution and Laws of the Order please send me a note or call. Kick off the year with action – recruit at least one new member in July and develop your prospect list for every month of this year. Vivat Jesus! Fraternally,

Greg Mahoney Washington State Council State Advocate, WSC [email protected]

State Warden Message

Family Fully Alive July Theme - “Witnessing To The Faith” Brother Knights, Welcome to the new fraternal year! This is an exciting time of change and opportunity, as we say good bye to some leaders and welcome others to leadership positions. I would like to thank Immediate Past State Deputy Ed Parazoo for his leadership and friendship over the years, he has provided a strong example of a Catholic Gentleman in words and deeds. Thank you for the honor of electing me to be the next State Warden for the Washington State Council. I am deeply honored by your trust and will work hard on your behalf. I have some pretty big shoes to fill as I take over from State Advocate Greg Mahoney! I hope to see many of you at the upcoming Summer Leadership meeting in Spokane on July 15-16. This is a great chance to learn about programs, membership, insurance and how to efficiently lead your Councils. All the State Officers are busy with the preparations and it looks to be a great experience with lots of good information, great guest speakers and the opportunity see your brothers again. Council Spotlight: Please see later in the bulletin for Council spotlights, including Centralia 1758 Fun Run for Habitat for Humanity, Federal Way 7528 Family of Year Award and Issaquah 7907 Culture of Life Essay award. Vivat Jesus!

Fraternally,

General Programs

Brothers, Welcome to the new Fraternal Year! I am looking forward to serving you as the Program Director, there are some really great opportunities for you and your Councils. The Summer Leadership meeting is coming up fast, July 15 - 16 in Spokane, at the Hotel RL. If you have not already registered you need to do so immediately, there is a wealth of information and training about programs, membership, insurance and much more. You can get the agenda and registration on the state website http://www.kofc-wa.org. This is a great chance for you new officers to get up to speed on Council matters and get your fraternal year off to a good start. We will continue the emphasis on “Building The Domestic Church this year,” as well as focusing on the “Big 8” programs from Supreme:

• Coats for Kids

• Food for Families

• Habitat for Humanity

• Global Wheelchair

• March for Life

• Ultrasound Initiative

• RSVP

• Special Olympics I would like to challenge each Council to adopt at least one new program this year, to provide visibility to the community and opportunities for recruiting. Let’s make this year a great one with strong visible programs. My personal theme for this year is “I AM My Brother’s Keeper.” When God ask Cain where his brother Abel was, he replied “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” Genesis 4:9. In society today, too many people say “That is not my job” or “I am not responsible for their problems.” As Knights, we operate under a different covenant - I want us to know where our brothers are if we are asked. Not only does that mean recruiting new members (brothers in Christ), it means we need to reach out to our brother Knights who no longer attend meetings and Council activities. Make the effort to e-mail, phone, knock on their door, write a letter, even call their wife or mom - - they joined the Knights of Columbus for a reason. We need to find out why they are no longer active, let them know they are missed and bring them and their talents back into the Council. Be your brother’s keeper. Vivat Jesus! Fraternally,

Tom Williams General Program Director Washington State Council [email protected]

Membership Director Desk

Brother Knights, We have a moral obligation to ask every eligible Catholic man to join the Knights of Columbus. The primary mission of every Knight is to grow the Order. We have to follow through on Christ’s charge to go and make disciples of all men. We need to be mission focused! We have an exciting membership action plan this year. And, it means we all need to work together as a team. First and foremost it involves prayer. Starting in July and every month thereafter, I ask each Knight to say a decade of the rosary each day of the week for five days. Start with the Glorious mysteries and change every week. If we are to be successful, then God needs to be the guiding force in our action plan. We have a new and exciting recruiter pin that will be presented at the Summer Leadership meeting in Spokane. Be one of the first Knights to receive the new pin by recruiting a new member in July by the Summer Leadership meeting. There are several nice incentives this year for our active recruiters, and these will be presented at the Summer Leadership meeting as well. We also have a new team that is ready to push forward.

• State Membership Recruitment and Development Chairman – West: Romy Ablao; Renato Sacramento, Co-Chair

• State Membership Recruitment and Development Chairman – East: TBD

• New Council Development and Round Table Chairman: Abundeo Reponte

• Council and Member Retention Chairman: William Stearns

• Hispanic Membership Development Chairmen: Daniel Pradera – West; Federico Lopez – East

• Fr. McGivney Legacy Teams (2-3 Man Teams): more information will follow on this new concept – stay tuned. We are looking for motivated, engaged and younger Knights to fill these teams as WSC Ambassadors to Catholic conferences and other Catholic forums throughout the state. These are exciting times, so consider joining this team and help make a difference. We have a number of Knights who have already signed up.

Keep this thought in the back of your mind: What have you done to make disciples of men and to help build up the Domestic Church, the Order and the Kingdom of God? Vivat Jesus! Fraternally,

Gregory S. Mahoney State Membership Director Washington State Council [email protected]

New Chapter In Our Lives My Brothers All, I am opening a new chapter in my life as each of you probably are. Staring at a blank page......somehow looks great! What will I write in this new chapter? What does life and the Knights of Columbus have in store for me? I look forward to this new journey and can't wait until it unfolds! I am proud to count you has brothers and friends. The previous chapter we just closed, didn't end up the way I had originally planned.....but hey, I think it was great just the same. We, you and I, did some truly awesome stuff! We did God's work in so many ways. Hopefully we made it a better place, at least that was our intent. As a partial recap, this past year:

• We gained two new Councils! Two new parishes and communities that we support.

• We gained approval for 3 new Ultrasound placements! Two are already funded. Three more clinics to help save countless lives.

• We provided thousands and thousands of dollars and hours of labor supporting God's work.

• We provided hundreds of free coats for needed youth.

• We provided sporting competitions to help keep our youth engaged.

• We provided essay and poster contests on various topics to challenge our youth.

• We provided countless events to help build our Domestic Church.

• We supported Special Olympics through our dollars and labor. More support than in past years.

• We helped victims in many forms.

• We helped keep Christ in Christmas with a multitude of ways.

• Etc.....

• Etc..... As we open this chapter, I look forward to following the path that our new State Deputy will lead us down. Knowing Bob, as I do, I think it's going to be fun! Thank you for all your support over these past years. Remember, it is always noticed and appreciated! God Bless. Vivat Jesus!

Council Administration and Finance

Council Administration and Finance is the new name for what was our Financial Secretary training program. The new name more accurately reflects our mission, which is to train, advise, and assist the Councils and Assemblies of Washington and all their officers in matters of Council administration and in financial matters. While most of our work will continue to be to train and assist Financial Secretaries and Faithful Comptrollers, we also offer our advice and assistance in administrative or financial matters to District Deputies, Grand Knights, Faithful Navigators, and all other Council and Assembly officers. Please feel free to contact any of our trainers with any problems or questions in areas such as officer roles and duties, membership records, required reports to Supreme, annual IRS returns, audits, budgets, billing and retention, use of Member Management and Member Billing, correct money-handling procedures, and other administrative or financial questions. Our staff has expanded to better serve Councils and Assemblies in Washington. Eventually we will have an Administration and Finance Trainer in each of the seven regions of the state. At present the following brothers stand ready to serve you in this way:

The start of another fraternal year has snuck up on us. Just a few weeks ago we were celebrating the wonderful works in the youth arena from around the state at the convention. Thank you to all the Councils that participated in the various programs. I am looking forward to an exciting year as I am entering my 9th year as state chairman for youth. From the youth perspective, participation in the youth programs has been down the last two years. Hopefully, new energy is being brought in to the Council level to get the youth programs energized and attractive to the youth. Getting the youth participating in programs is a way of getting families familiar with the Knights and a way of enticing dads to think about the Knights. Many Councils have wonderful programs and are attracting a healthy participation of the youth. I would like to showcase a program or activity each month for Councils to see what is happening from around the state. A reminder email will be sent out each month to the Grand Knights and Financial Secretaries to provide a summary of your activity.

You should be starting to plan the youth programs and activities for the upcoming fraternal year. Information on the Supreme supported youth programs can be found at http://www.kofc.org/en/members/programs/youth-activities/index.html

Supreme Supported programs: Soccer Challenge The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge is a competition designed for players aged 9 through 14 to demonstrate the most basic of soccer skills — the penalty kick. Each player will be allowed 15 shots at the goal from the penalty line (12 yards from the goal). This has been a trying program to get high level of participating as it is held in the middle of soccer season. Look for additional information in the coming months.

KCIC Poster Contest The Knights of Columbus “Keep Christ in Christmas” Poster Contest is open to all young people between the ages of 5 and 14. Contest entrants compete in one of three age groups — ages 5 through 7, ages 8 through 10, and 11 through 14. Some schools may have different age brackets for their elementary and middle schools. Each local, District, or state competition may have up to 6 winning entries — a first and second place winner in each age group. State winners will be forward on to Supreme for international consideration.

Substance Abuse Poster Contest Contest entrants compete in one of two age groups – ages 8 through 11, and ages 12 through 14. Each local, District, or state competition many have up to 4 winning entries – one from each category in each age group. (8-11 Drug Awareness and Abuse, 8-11 Alcohol Awareness and Abuse, 12-14 Drug Awareness and Abuse, 12-14 Alcohol Awareness and Abuse). State winners will be forward on to Supreme for international consideration.

Free Throw Contest The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is open to all boys and girls in your community, ages 9 to 14. Age eligibility is determined by the age of the contestant as of January 1. Try something different if your participation numbers are low. Saturdays and Sunday mornings and afternoons are not a good time to be holding Council and District competitions. Many participants play games during this time frame. Hold a competition on a week night when teams are practicing of after the Saturday evening mass. Fraternally,

Ken DeVos Youth Chairman

Master of the Fourth Degree - Western WA

Upcoming 4th Degree Schedule 28 Oct 2017, St. Mary’s Parish, Centralia, WA. Host Assembly (3144 Holy Family)

Fourth Degree Chalice Program Each assembly should have a memorials committee to coordinate the Assembly’s response to the death of a member or one of a member's family. A strong show of fraternal spirit by the Assembly when someone dies is among the most meaningful gestures you can make. The primary responsibility of the memorials committee is to attend wakes and funerals of Knights and their family members. The committee should present a “Resolution of Condolence” certificate (#1494, English, French and Spanish, 25¢ each) to the family of the

deceased and offer any assistance the Assembly can provide. A program to memorialize a Sir Knight who passes away is the Chalice Program. Through it, the Assembly purchases a chalice and donates it to a priest, bishop or local church in the name of the deceased. A special “In Memoriam” certificate (#1455, 25¢ each) announcing the donation is available from the Supreme Council Supply Department for presentation to the family. In addition, distinctive 24 karat gold-plated chalices featuring the Fourth-Degree emblem, to be donated in a Sir Knight’s honor, can be purchased from the Supply Department. The Chalice Program is a beautiful and lasting way to pay tribute to a Sir Knight who has passed away. It will offer great comfort to the family members of a deceased Sir Knight that a chalice presented for use in offering the holy sacrifice of the Mass has been given in the name of their Loved one. Issaquah Council 7907 State Culture of Life Essay Winner, Trent Mangan, with DD23 Tim Dunn and Luis Cifuentes. Trent received his certificate and award at Mass, June 11th, at St. Joseph

Federal Way Council 7528 Jim and Mary Ann Traynor were selected as the Family of the Year, out of more than 17,000 Knights. The Traynors have been members of St. Theresa parish since 1986, supporting parish activities and fund-raisers. They are also involved in the community in many ways. Mary Ann is the Director of Reach Out’s Women’s Night Shelter, serving homeless women from October 1 to March 31. Seven days a week she must coordinate area churches and community groups to provide overnight accommodations, ensure they have hot, nourishing meals and adequate supplies. Jim has held most of the offices in the Knights Council here, including all of the leadership roles. He plays a key role in the Seahawk concession stand fund-raiser, blood drives, Council dinners and events. Men like Jim form the strong backbone of the Knights. In 2016 Jim and Mary Ann contributed over 1,700 hours of volunteer time! The application for the award stated: “This family walks the walk of Jesus, caring for those that are in the greatest need.” I can’t think of any higher praise for such a deserving family.

Family Chairman

With the beginning of this new fraternal year let us, as families, use the month of July as a month to pray for families and the success of all our endeavors, whether it be Knights or family-related.

A FAMILY PRAYER Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate

the splendor of true love, to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too

may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic churches.

Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again

experience violence, rejection and division: may all who have been hurt or scandalized

find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth,

make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family,

and its beauty in God’s plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph,

graciously hear our prayer. Amen.

Composed by Pope Francis for the Feast of the Holy Family, 2013.

Fraternally, Ed Hebert Sr. State Family Chairman

State Historian

4th Degree Members, Does Your Assembly Have a Written History? There now are 60 fourth degree Assemblies in the state, but only 48 of them have submitted a written history. Are you a member of long standing in your Assembly who would be able to sketch out a little history of that Assembly? If not, do you know of a Sir Knight who would have the knowledge and memory of the Assembly’s beginnings and could submit a few of those facts? Your Assembly should be represented in the state’s collection of assembly histories. Do it now, before you lose your memory! Even if you don’t have much knowledge of the early days, perhaps you could at least submit the date of charter, a list of charter members, and a factoid or two of its origins. Assemblies with no history submitted are: 1170, 1171, 1183, 3097, 3283, 3398, 3414, 3487, 3565, 3577, 3674, and 3708. Submit your Assembly’s history to Joe St.Hilaire, [email protected], or bring it with you to the Summer Leadership Meeting. Joe St. Hilaire State Historian

RSVP REDO This past fraternal year the Knights of Columbus in Washington State provided $94,210.00 in direct payments to seminarians and religious. Sixty-nine Councils (69 out of about 165 Councils) and three Assemblies (3 out of 60 Assemblies) participated in the RSVP program. Several seminarians this year only received a minimum support of $500, while six seminarians received over $4,000 each. This is primarily due to rollover support from Councils, and gaining new support from other Councils for various reasons. Seminarians in collegiate and pre-theology programs have a greater need for support because they traditionally do not receive tuition assistance from their diocese. They also must pay residency fees at the seminary. Theological seminarians are traditionally covered by the diocese, and sometimes also receive a monthly stipend. When a theology student receives $4,600 in support from Councils/Assemblies and a collegiate student only receives $500 and comes from a poor family, there is a problem with the system. Given the total of the amount paid to seminarians this fraternal year, every seminarian could have received $2,000 each. This coming fraternal year, ALL COUNCILS and ASSEMBLIES must contact me to get seminarians assigned for them to support. Even if your Council/Assembly has supported a seminarian throughout their years, we need to look at the total support each is receiving and direct the funds where they are needed the most. I have one seminarian who was disowned by his family for becoming a Catholic. He needs more support than those who come from affluent backgrounds or have their tuition covered by the diocese. Please help me this fraternal year to insure that the seminarians in the greatest need receive the most funds. If your Council or Assembly does not participate in the RSVP Program, I encourage you to start this year and support a seminarian. We will probably have an increase in the number of seminarians this coming year so your support is much needed. Thank you for supporting our seminarians. Tim Coyle Vocations Chairman

Ceremonials

My Brothers in Christ, Before I begin, I wanted to acknowledge the many contributions of outgoing Ceremonial Director, our brother Wayne Hogan. He deserves every recognition and our deepest appreciation for all he has done in his dedicated service to the State of Washington and the Order. Please join me in congratulating Brother Wayne and Former First Lady Laurie for their years of service. As you’re planning to put on and participate in all of the degrees organized for the coming year, I want to impress upon each of you Grand Knights and District Deputies the importance of your roles in encouraging your new and existing members to advance through the Admission, Formation, and Knighthood degrees. The proper conduct and commitment to our ceremonials is a vital key to the success of your Councils, Districts, the State Council and the Order. The more participation and support of your members that you have for these degrees, the more likely you will have a dedicated and committed brother to actively participate in the Council activities and projects. Former Ceremonial Director Wayne has worked tirelessly the past few months to schedule and organize Knighthood degrees throughout the State and the year. That schedule is on the website and it will be updated throughout the year. Your responsibility as Grand Knights and District Deputies is to carefully plan your Admission and Formation Degrees in an appropriate manner so that your members can be ready to participate in the planned Knighthood through the year in your area. Please take advantage of these opportunities; the success of these planned Admission, Formation, and Knighthood will translate to your success. Worthy Grand Knights, as you plan your Admission Degrees for the year, here a few things to remember:

• You as the Grand Knight are in charge of the Degree!! You are responsible for the formation and making arrangements for the certification of your Council team.

• Before scheduling the degree, confer with your District Deputy. District Deputies or their designated Former District Deputies must be present to evaluate each degree.

• You have three options for putting on the degree:

The first and preferred option is to conduct the degree for a certified admission degree team that has memorized all of the parts

The next option is conducting the degree with team members who can effectively read the parts. Reading degree part is allowed until further notice. For this method to be effective, the reading of parts should be done with conviction and compassion by each team member.

The last option is the conduct of the degree with the use of the Narration CD and Admission Degree Video Production.

• The attire for the degree should one of two options:

The use of Ceremonial Robes The use of Supreme Council Ceremonial Sash worn over a dark colored business suit with the Council jewel of

office

• Sponsors should escort their candidates. Candidates should never attend any degree by themselves. Sponsors should be present to support them at each degree that they attend.

• Any priest taking the degree should only take it by observation. The team captain should be informed if there are any priests planning to take the degree.

Good luck with your goals for the year ahead of us. As always, be prayerful in all you do and at every gathering with your Brothers offer special prayers for all members of your Council both active and inactive, for new potential prospects, and for the success of your Council in accomplishing its goals for the coming year

I will have tootsie rolls and copies of all the forms with me at Summer Leadership Meeting, so if you need anything to get going come and see me at the Tootsie Roll table. For those Councils new at this, give it a try. You will not be disappointed even if the success is limited.
