Faithful Navigator’s Report

Sir Knights, The Summer is coming to an end and our next meeting will be September 25th. We will have to hit the ground running as there are many things coming up in the next few months to keep us busy. The first thing I would like to mention is that an Exemplifi-cation is being held in South Glen Falls on October 8th. This is a great opportunity for us to bring in new members as we do not have to travel very far. Unfortunately this is very close to our meeting and does not give us a lot of time to contact new members. If you have any Candidates in mind, please contact them or me so that we can get them a Form 4 to sign, explain the dress code, time of arrival, and ap-proximately how long the Exemplification will take. The Form 4's will have to be turned in by the September meeting. The Color Corp has been invited to participate at the Shrine in Auriesville on Saturday September 16th. If you would like to participate, contact Mike Planko, Color Corp Com-mander. Our annual Veterans Dinner and Silent Auction will be on September 30th. Tickets need to be sold, items ob-tained for the Auction, people to volunteer to help with the dinner, etc. This has been a great success story for our As-sembly in the past but success does not come without effort. May each of us find some time in our busy lives to help and continue making this a great success story for our Assembly. Contact LaVern, Joe, Frank, or myself if you can assist in any way. We will soon resume cooking for the two Veterans Homes in Balston Spa on Thursday's. This is a great service pro-gram which gives us an opportunity to donate time and talent providing for these men and women who served our country. Contact Frank or Joe to see what you can do to assist this program. As Fraternal brothers, hopefully you can find some time to assist one or more of these endeavors and in doing so be rewarded by the fellowship spent with your Fraternal brothers. Vivat Jesus, Emory Taylor Faithful Navigator

CBS News reported earlier this week that Iceland is leading the world in “eradicating Down syndrome births.” One might be forgiven for assuming that

Iceland has developed an innovative treatment for the chromosomal disorder. It turns out Iceland’s solution is much simpler, and much more sinister: using prenatal testing and abortion to systematically exterminate chil-dren with Down syndrome. This isn’t progress; it’s eugen-ics. Prenatal testing is optional in Iceland, but the govern-ment mandates that doctors notify women of that option. About 85 percent of expectant mothers undergo the test, and close to 100 percent of those women choose to abort if their child is diagnosed with Down syndrome. Just two children with Down syndrome are born in Iceland each year, often as the result of faulty testing. The CBS article does little to accord this subject the moral gravity it deserves. “Other countries aren’t lagging too far behind in Down syndrome termination rates,” the au-thors note casually. CBS News’s tweet promoting the sto-ry read simply: “Iceland is on pace to virtually eliminate Down syndrome through abortion.” Alexandra DeSanctis for National Review, August 16, 2017 Submitted by Wendell Neugebauer

Columbian Report The summer has passed by quickly and most of our in-house projects have been accomplished. July was very slow for rentals and lounge business. August started off slow, but is starting to pick up. The Columbian has sever-al major expenses due in September (approx. $10,000) and this does not included our day to day operational expenses. Dick Grimm continues to work his magic keep-ing the Columbian solvent and Gus Ross has done an out-standing job keeping the home in good repair. I am look-ing forward to a strong last quarter to help our financial situation. On another note, sales of our $100 raffle tick-ets are extremely slow. We need to get behind this pro-ject. Please send checks and stubs to Dick Grimm at the Council home. If you need more tickets contact Dick at [email protected] Ken Davis

Chaplain’s Report

Our annual Memorial for our deceased Knights and Catholic Daughters will be held at St. Clement's this year on November 13. The Mass will begin at 6:30 pm. There will be more info in the October newsletter. This month I will continue my articles on the Seven Sacraments. This month we will do the Sacrament of Penance. Penance is popularly called confession and is also referred as the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Until the eighth century Confession was publicly or directly to a Bishop. In the eighth century Irish monks started the custom of private confession. Thank God for the Irish monks.

For a confession to be valid four things must present: 1) we should be sorry for our sins, 2) make a firm commitment to try to overcome them, 3) receive absolution and, 4) do the penance that is given to us by the priest. We must confess mortal sins before receiving Holy Communion. What makes a sin mortal? Three things; Its a grievous matter, Its given sufficient reflection and its given full consent of the will. The Church urges us to confess Venial sins and try to go to confession every other month. The only one who can grant absolution is the priest who represents Christ. (In persona Christi) The priest is bound by the seal of confession not to reveal anything he heard under penalty of sin. "Confession heals, confession justifies, confession grants pardon of sin, all hope consists in confession; in confession there is a chance for mercy." - St. Vincent of Seville A few dates in September to be aware of: September 8, The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary September 14 The Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Did you know?

Our 4th Degree has been sponsoring the dinner one night a week for the Homeless Men and Women Veterans Homes. Joe and Frank weekly cook and deliver to the Veterans. And because of all of the hard work from our volunteers supporting the Chowder Fest in Saratoga earlier this year, we were able to collect enough money in the donation jar to bring the veterans to our hall for dinner. On June 29th we served our Veterans appetizers, grilled steak, lobster tails, baked potato, corn and dessert. We also were able to attain assistance of four young Sailors from the Kesselring Site, in their Dress Whites, to help serve and spend an evening with these wonderful men and women. What a great way to show our gratitude to our Veter-ans. The Patriotic Degree is meant to “glorify God by serving our communities as though Christ were the one being served.” Vivat Jesus! THEME – CHARITY We learn of God’s love through the Scriptures, the testimony of God himself, where we read that “whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Mt 25:40). The Scriptures therefore instruct all, including families, to practice charity because Christ is present in every person, especially the poor and needy.

Meditation From Pope Francis’ Amoris Laetitia

A married couple who experience the power of love know that this love is called to bind the wounds of the outcast, to foster a culture of encounter and to fight for justice. God has given the family the job of “domesticating” the world and helping each per-son to see fellow human beings as brothers and sisters. … For their part, open and caring families find a place for the poor and build friendships with those less fortunate than themselves. In their efforts to live according to the Gospel, they are mindful of Jesus’ words: “as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me” (Mt 25:40). In a very real way, their lives express what is asked of us all: “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your kinsmen or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return, and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed” (Lk 14:12-14). You will be blessed! Here is the secret to a happy family.

By their witness as well as their words, families speak to others of Jesus. They pass on the faith, they arouse a desire for God and they reflect the beauty of the Gospel and its way of life. … Their fruitfulness expands and in countless ways makes God’s love pre-sent in society .

1. How do we live out charity in our family towards others?

2. Why does charity enrich family life and expand its fruitfulness? Do we think people can actually encounter Christ by helping

those who are in need? Why or why not?

3. How can our family learn to know God better through love in our own family and love toward those we don’t know?

Scripture Reading - Psalm 86:1-7,11-12

Incline your ear, LORD, and answer me, for I am poor and oppressed. Preserve my life, for I am devoted; save your servant who trusts in you. You are my God; be gracious to me, LORD; to you I call all the day. Gladden the soul of your servant; to you, LORD, I lift up my soul. LORD, you are good and forgiving, most merciful to all who call on you. LORD, hear my prayer; listen to my cry for help. On the day of my distress I call to you, for you will answer me. Teach me, LORD, your way that I may walk in your truth, single-hearted and revering your name. I will praise you with all my heart,

glorify your name forever, LORD my God.
