DEAR CUSTOMERS,THE MANY THINGS YOU HAVE SEEN AND EXPERIENCED ON BUILDING SITES AROUND THE WORLD THROUGHOUT YOUR CAR EER NEVER FAIL TO AMAZE US.

In 2017, around 30,000 plumbers, plumbing contractors and sanitary engineers attended a course at one of our 29 Information Centres. Such courses are not simply a few hours or days sitting in front of a blackboard, but forums where you can roll up your sleeves and try things out, comment on and discuss issues and compare and ques-tion away to your heart’s content. There is also always enough time to get to know each other a little better and exchange anecdotes from everyday life on the building site.

Geberit has been offering customer training for a very long time. Indeed, many a seasoned plumbing contractor has told us that they took part in our courses during their own vocational training and then again on multiple occasions throughout their career. After all, the Geberit Information Centres are not just places where theory is imparted, but where solid professional experience is also shared – this mix of knowledge and practical experience is what people find unique.

I wish you an enjoyable read.

GEBERIT PRESENTS THE LATEST FROM THE BATHROOM COLLECTION AT THE 2018 HOMEMAKERS AND DECOREX EXHIBITIONSGeberit once again participated at the ever popular décor and lifestyle exhibition HOMEMAKERS Expo in Johannesburg. This year’s Expo theme “FOR REAL HOMES,” celebrates the authenticity behind real homes and their beauty. In keeping to the theme, Geberit presented the Bathroom Collection in a more innate lifestyle setting. “We took inspiration from last year’s Geberit ISH Exhibition stand, however with only 30 m² space to work with, it was somewhat of a challenge to show-case the different bathroom series in a well-designed, yet functional bathroom setting, demonstrating the art of com-bining style and technology that would inspire the visitors,” says Dorianne Isaacman, Marketing Manager at GESA. “We were honoured and extremely proud to not only be recognised as one of the top 10 exhibits at this year’s exhibition, receiving a Gold certificate for Stand and Design Excellence, but were awarded with the Top Accolade of being the Overall Winner of the Johannesburg HOMEMAKERS 2018 Expo.”

Geberit continued with their initiative of presenting the latest offering from the Bathroom Collection by taking their award-winning stand to Decorex, the pre-mier decor, design and lifestyle exhibition in Durban and Cape Town. Visitors to the stand were enthralled with Geberit’s new bathroom products. The innovative and creative bathroom options displayed were inspiring and engaging and Geberit were acknowledged and rewarded for their ingenuity and creativity, receiving a Certificate of Excellence at Decorex Durban and winning the best stand award in THE BATHROOM AND KITCHEN category at Decorex in Cape Town.

Visit Geberit at Decorex Johannesburg from 8 to 12 August.

BATHROOM CERAMICS FROM FINLAND

FIT FOR THE FUTURE

It is no accident that the Finnish ceramics plant is one of the most modern of its kind. Automation and the introduction of the Geberit Production System have taken it to the next level and beyond.

Ceramic sanitary appliances have been manufac-tured in Finland for over 140 years. This tradition is much younger in Ekenäs (also known as Tammisaari), a Finnish town one hour’s drive from Helsinki. WC ce-ramic appliances, exposed cisterns and washbasins have been manufactured there since 1969.

EARLY AUTOMATIONA look inside the 55,000-square-metre production hall reveals that the processes involved in the manu-facture of ceramic sanitary appliances are not as tra-ditional as one might expect – and it’s been this way for quite some time. Modern technology is now a standard feature in Ekenäs. “Our efforts at automating production go back a long way,” says Matts Lund-ström, Managing Director of the plant, confirming the first impression. Indeed, the casting of ceramic sani-tary appliances was partially automated in the plant by means of industrial robots as far back as 1999.

Despite the robot gripper arm’s imposing appearance, each of its movements is elegant and carefully exe-cuted. It carefully lifts the ceramic sanitary appliances out of the moulds and touches up edges and uneven areas on the moist, still-malleable body with a sponge – all fully automatically. The subsequent drying process removes most of the water from the ceramic sanitary appliance. It is hardened for 16 to 20 hours at 80 °C before receiving its glaze, which gives it its glossy and extremely fine-pored surface.

CLEVERLY LINKED PROCESSESThe first industrial robots came onto the market in the 1970s, and they were used in the automotive industry. Only a short time later, this technological achieve-ment was also utilised for ceramic glazing at the plant in Ekenäs. As a result, automation at the plant dates back to long before the aforementioned automation of the casting process. And the glaze coat is still evenly applied to the ceramic body by

BEHIND THE SCENESBEHIND THE SCENES

Page 5: KNOW -HOW · 2018. 8. 28. · In 2017, around 30,000 plumbers, plumbing contractors ... PICTURES Scagliola Brakkee Fotografie (cover, pages 26–27) Nina Ahtola ... Certificate of

robots today. In general, the high degree of automa-tion is particularly noticeable in this area of the hall. Eight self-driving forklift trucks have been travelling between the glazing station, the kilns and the quality control area since 2011. They have been programmed to detect obstructions of all kinds, prevent collisions and ensure that the fragile ceramic sanitary appli-ances arrive safely at their respective destination.

The ceramic sanitary appliances are fired in the kiln for between 12 and 24 hours at a temperature of up to 1,200 °C. After they have cooled down, they are trans-ported to the quality control area. “Everyone who works here has eyes like a hawk and good ears,” ex-plains Matts Lundström. The ease with which the qual-ity experts rotate and turn the ceramic sanitary appli-ance and spot even the tiniest flaw with the naked eye is remarkable. Hidden cracks, on the other hand, can only be detected by listening. A gentle tap on the ce-ramic sanitary appliance and the quality expert can hear whether it has any defects. “You need years of experience and a trained ear in order to identify the defective ceramic sanitary appliances,” says the Man-aging Director.

FLEXIBLE PRODUCTIONWhether in production or logistics, all processes at Geberit are constantly and resolutely examined in or-der to identify potential improvements. Indeed, soon after the acquisition of the Sanitec Group, the deci-sion was taken to also introduce the Geberit Produc-tion System at the ceramics plants. This system com-prises the core elements of lean production and is designed in such a way that it can be applied to differ-ent manufacturing processes and plants. It has al-ready been established for many years in Geberit’s

plants where plastic and metal are processed. Initial results from Ekenäs show that the implementation was very successful. “Productivity has increased sig-nificantly since we switched to the Geberit Production System,” explains Matts Lundström.

The implemented measures focused on the standard-isation of internal processes, the close integration of suppliers and the shift in production philosophy from the workshop principle to a demand-oriented system of continuous flow production. Long idle times, over-production and high stock levels are therefore a thing of the past, and production flexibility has increased.

A PROVEN SYSTEMFurthermore, the recent integration of the final as-sembly and the packaging stations into the compre-hensive production system optimises the flow of ma-terial. Unlike beforehand, the ceramic sanitary appliances are immediately packed, arranged on pal-lets and on their way to the customers shortly after-wards. The days of large stock levels are over. And the Geberit Production System is also effective here with regard to the fine details. For example, to prevent bottlenecks, the packaging and assembly material is replenished twice per shift. “The system enabled a sustained reduction in material and stock levels and also ensures that we can respond quickly and flexibly to external circumstances,” explains Matts Lundström.

The production process in the 55,000-square-metre hall benefits from a speedy and unobstructed flow of material.

When it comes to quality control, experienced specialists are still head and shoulders above any

machine.

FOCUSING ON THE GEBERIT BRAND

LESS IS MOREThe number of products and brands in the sanitary industry is growing constantly. Even professionals are finding it increasingly difficult to keep track. By streamlining its brand portfolio, Geberit is curbing this trend.

Three years ago, Geberit entered into the ceramic sanitary appliance and bathroom furniture business with the acquisition of the Sanitec Group. This move saw the goal of being able to offer comprehensive bathroom solutions from a single source come within reach. This goal has already since been achieved in some initial markets, such as in the United Kingdom, Spain and South Africa. Innovative and reliable Geberit sanitary technology behind the wall is being comple-mented with elegant and highly functional Geberit bathroom series in front of the wall.

UNCHANGED BREADTH AND DEPTH OF PRODUCT RANGE2017 saw the introduction of Geberit branded wash-basins, toilets and bidets as well as Geberit bathroom furniture in South Africa. From 2019, the bathroom products from the Keramag brand will be sold under the Geberit brand. This will have no effect on the ex-isting breadth and depth of the product range, and the traditional European production sites will also remain unchanged.

“The decision to streamline our brand portfolio is something we considered very carefully,” says Martin Baumüller, member of the Group Executive Board. “As the Geberit brand also enjoys increasing visibility and an excellent reputation among end users, we decided to increasingly focus on this quality brand in future.”

TANGIBLE BENEFITSFocusing on the strong Geberit brand – a brand that is firmly established in the sanitary industry – has numer-ous advantages. Here are the most important ones:

– Plumbers, sanitary engineers, architects, interior designers, property owners and end users can find all the information on the comprehensive range offered by the leading European manufacturer of sanitary products at a single source – Geberit.

– Plumbing and bathroom exhibitions as well as showrooms can more effectively draw attention to the products offered by Geberit when they only have to consider a single brand.

– It is much easier to explain and demonstrate the benefits of innovative all-round solutions featuring

coordinated individual components when the same brand name is found on everything.

– Geberit currently sells identical bathroom prod-ucts under various, regionally established brands, resulting in additional complexity in production and logistics. If the number of such brands is re-duced, delivery readiness and flexibility in the supply chain – from the manufacturer right through to the end user – will automatically improve.

– The development of innovative products and inte-grated solutions is greatly simplified if the product developers do not have to look after managing a complex range or take individual brand aspects into account.

THE CHALLENGEThe benefits of the planned brand concentration are convincing. The fact that every successful brand has emotional values and aspects that people identify with also has to be considered, of course. Production staff, marketing and sales staff, showroom operators and, ultimately, end users are motivated by these mostly “soft” values. Transferring these to another brand is no easy task.

Geberit will rise to this challenge. Virtually no other brand in the sanitary industry can today offer its cus-tomers prospects as attractive as those offered by Geberit. Thanks to a very healthy financial foundation, the company is able to continuously invest in devel-oping new products and technologies and in improv-ing manufacturing processes and, thus, play an active role in shaping the future of the sanitary industry.

Geberit bathroom ceramics and bathroom furniture in front of the

wall and Geberit sanitary technology behind the wall is now available in

South Africa.

A WIND FARM EQUIPPED WITH GEBERIT MAPRESS

UNCOMPROMISING QUALITY

In 2019, the “Hohe See” wind farm will commence opera-tions in the North Sea. With 71 wind turbines and a trans-former platform that weighs more than 4,000 metric tons, this facility is setting new standards. Several thousand metres of Geberit Mapress pipes are also installed here.

Once at its final destination in the North Sea, this platform will be lifted by a crane vessel onto a mighty supporting frame anchored to the seabed.

It is the beginning of February 2018. An icy-cold wind is blowing across the Antwerp shipyard of ENGIE Ax-ima, a company that specialises in the construction of industrial plants. Because of all its extensions and superstructures, the massive transformer platform of the future wind farm Hohe See has outgrown its hangar at the shipyard and has therefore been out in the open for a couple of weeks. Despite the rotten weather, there are specialists everywhere, all busy completing the final superstructures and →

systems. “This platform has to arrive at its destination in the North Sea in May,” says Tim Van den Nest, pro-ject manager at ENGIE Axima, explaining the flurry of activity. “And absolutely everything that has been in-stalled here still has to be put through its paces by then.” AT LEAST 25 YEARS OF CONTINUOUS OPERATIONWind farms in the North Sea and Baltic Sea are playing an increasingly important role in providing a sustain-able energy supply for Europe. They benefit from the higher and more constant wind speeds on the open sea and can therefore produce twice as much elec-tricity as comparable facilities on the mainland. How-ever, storms, waves, salt water and the distance to the coast place very high demands on the technologies and materials.

The Hohe See wind farm, which is currently being built for EnBW (Energie Baden-Württemberg), will have an output of up to 497 megawatts (MW) and can there-fore generate electricity for 560,000 households. The power station will be installed in the North Sea, around 90 km north of the island of Borkum. It comprises 71 wind turbines, each with an output of 7 MW. The elec-tricity generated by the individual turbines will be bun-dled on the transformer platform, transformed to a higher voltage and transmitted to the mainland via a submarine cable. The entire wind farm is designed to operate continuously and without personnel for at least 25 years.

EXTREME CLIMATIC CONDITIONS“In October 2016, we set about constructing this transformer platform here,” explains Tim Van den Nest. Today, the two-storey steel giant, which is al-most ready for use and has a length of 60 metres and a width of 30 metres, weighs in at well over 4,000 met-ric tons, including the technical infrastructure and helipad. This is a new record for ENGIE Axima’s design engineers.

In addition to containing state-of-the-art high-voltage transformation technology, the platform also has nu-merous systems and units in order to ensure uninter-rupted operation in any weather conditions. While the outside air temperature at the destination can fluctu-ate from –10 °C to +30 °C and the humidity frequently reaches 100%, the climate in the transformer plat-form’s service rooms is to be as constant and moder-ate as possible.

REDUNDANT SYSTEMSTo ensure uninterrupted operation at all times, there is a backup system for all key systems, including the closed cooling circuits, to which numerous air-condi-tioning units and other systems on the platform are connected. The circuit lines are filled with a mixture of water and glycol and include pipes with diameters of up to 108 mm. The pipe system selected for this task is Mapress Copper.

A pressed pipe section featuring Mapress Copper, shortly before being clad with insulation material.

The platform is also equipped with several fire-fight-ing systems, including a sprinkler system. The pipe system used here is Mapress Stainless Steel. “In ad-dition to the high quality, we were won over by the prompt and expert technical support as well as the fact that the Mapress products we used are certified from A to Z,” explains Tim Van den Nest. “With projects of this complexity and scale, compromising on the quality of the installed products is absolutely out of the question.”

COMPREHENSIVE FUNCTION TESTSBefore the completed transformer platform is loaded onto a pontoon-like load carrier and transported to the North Sea by tugboats, it has to undergo compre-hensive function tests. Only once it has been estab-lished beyond doubt that every single component functions properly, it can leave the shipyard. “Repairs on the high seas are many times more expensive than work carried out on the mainland. We and our custom-ers therefore attach such great importance to abso-lutely everything being spot on before transporta-tion,” stresses Tim Van den Nest.

CUSTOMER TRAINING WORLDWIDE

KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE

The abbreviation GIZ stands for Geberit Information Centre. There are currently 29 such centres around the globe, each designed to be a hub for knowledge transfers and professional exchanges as well as a place where inspiring ideas in the area of bathroom design can blossom.

Over 120,000 people take advantage of Geberit’s comprehensive range of training opportunities each year, around a quarter of whom do so by booking a course at a Geberit Information Centre. With the com-bined know-how of the market leader in the field of sanitary products more tangible here than anywhere else, attending a course there certainly pays off.

HOW THE WATER FLOWSThe demonstration module for drainage systems is perhaps the most impressive attraction that can be found in most information centres in one form or an-other. This module – which is also known as a “drain-age tower” and whose sole purpose is to aid the trans-fer of knowledge – is equipped with transparent pipes. This allows the impact of different installation types on the course of the water to be demonstrated right down to the last detail – an unusual sight

In the practice rooms at the information centres, the course participants also get the opportunity to engage in hands-on training.

To ensure uninterrupted operation around the clock, most systems have a backup system in place.

A demonstration at the module for drainage systems is one of the highlights of a visit to a GIZ. Because installation types differ from country to country, no two modules are the same (pictured here is the information centre in Johannesburg, which was opened in March 2017).

Each Geberit Information Centre has a demonstration module for drainage systems (pictured here is the module at the headquarters in Rapperswil-Jona).

that sometimes amazes even seasoned plumbers and sanitary engineers.

No two demonstration modules are the same; each one is geared towards the specific problems and con-struction standards in the respective market. The ex-amples from real life therefore form the ideal setting for the participants to engage in knowledge sharing, with this sharing of experiences professionally mod-erated by a customer consultant in most cases.

SEEING AND TOUCHINGA key feature that the 29 information centres and other training facilities have in common is the practice rooms. These rooms represent the ultimate forum for mutual exchanges, providing professionals from the construction industry with ideal conditions to get a good feel for the product range. Regardless of whether you are attending a basic training course, an advanced course or a new products’ presentation, trying things out for yourself is the name of the game here.

Geberit’s training concept is designed in such a way that there are, in principle, no barriers with regard to admission to the course programme – another feature that makes it unique in many countries. Practical sem-inars for staff from wholesalers? Of course. New prod-ucts’ presentations for back-office staff? No problem. However, it is mainly the new generation of industry professionals who are a permanent fixture on the guest list at the Geberit Information Centres, with countless master plumbers trusting that their appren-tices are prepared for future requirements there.

A CONSERVATIVE RENOVATION OF URINAL SYSTEMS

NO MOREEXCUSES

A renovation of ageing urinal systems – surely every-one will be on board with that? Many systems have been carrying out their tasks for a very long time. They no longer meet modern expectations from a technical point of view, operation and maintenance are time-consuming and costly, and the design also seems old-fashioned.

A CONSERVATIVE APPROACHBut a renovation is complex. After all, the tiles have to be chiselled from the wall and the sanitary facility is turned into a building site for a few days. However, practical renovation sets from Geberit now make this task significantly easier. These sets make it possible to convert the urinal flush control and to even connect the water supply directly to the new urinal system’s integrated flush control – all without damaging the existing tiling.

ELECTRICITY AND WATER NO PROBLEMWith older urinal flush controls, the water supply can be easily routed down to the docking station – the in-tegrated flush control underneath the urinal ceramic appliance – using a reinforced braided hose. And the electricity? The Geberit urinal system can be oper-ated by battery or even via a self-sustaining power supply. This flexibility makes it a perfect solution for renovation projects.

THE PROBLEM-SOLVERIn certain cases, you still have the problem of the old urinal ceramic appliance being too big. The outer ge-ometries of the Geberit urinal ceramic appliances Preda and Selva, which were introduced two years ago, may not be big enough to cover up the existing holes and connections. The new urinal ceramic appli-ance Tamina solves this problem in such situations by covering up the unwelcome traces from the past.

SECURELY FASTENEDGeberit has developed a wall fixing for the Tamina es-pecially for drywall construction. This fixing is de-signed to be able to bear a load of up to 150 kg and therefore meets the applicable standards. For solid wall construction, there are hanger bolts available that ensure that the urinal is reliably anchored to the wall. With both fastening types, a practical drilling template helps to define the optimal position of the fastening elements in relation to the urinal rim height and drain.

Geberit offers practical renovation sets and the new urinal ceramic appliance Tamina in order to ensure that you can easily and quickly switch from an old urinal system to the state-of-the-art Geberit urinal system, even in special cases.

The urinal system from Geberit enables modern renovations without major construction work.

People often used to opt against upgrading a urinal system due to the cost involved.

The new, extra-large urinal ceramic appliance Tamina was specially developed for renovations.

WHICH RENOVATION SET DO I NEED?

You can use the Geberit ProApp’s product finder function to find out exactly which set has to be ordered for which system.

EQUIPPED WITH BLUETOOTH

NEW BATTERY-OPERATED PRESSING TOOLS

Thanks to a new Bluetooth interface, relevant information from the pressing tools can be accessed in an app.

Geberit is launching three new battery-operated pressing tools, namely the ACO 103plus, the ACO 203plus and the ACO 203XLplus. These tools are equipped with a Bluetooth interface, which the Novo-Check app can use to read out important device in-formation. The user can therefore check the device status at any time. An integrated report function also offers the possibility of documenting the executed pressing operations as a building site report. This can be read out over the app and can be sent by email or printed out at any time.

INCREASED BATTERY CAPACITYGeberit now offers a 5 Ah rechargeable battery, which can be used with the ACO 203plus and ACO 203XLplus pressing tools. The increased battery capacity allows three times more pressing operations than the 1.5 Ah rechargeable battery. This leads to fewer interrup-tions and fast installation progress on the building site.

MAINTENANCE-FREE PRESSING JAWS Geberit has revised the Mepla pressing jaws in the dimensions 16–50 mm and the Mapress pressing jaws in the dimensions 12–35 mm. The new versions are designed in such a way that the annual inspection by an authorised inspection body is no longer re-quired. Regular cleaning of the pressing jaws suffices. Plumbers can carry out the function test on the press-ing jaws themselves at any time using the Geberit PowerTest.

Together with the new pressing tools, Geberit is also launching maintenance-free pressing jaws.

The new pressing tools have high- performance recharge-able batteries.

SPORTCAMPUS ZUIDERPARK, THE HAGUE, THE NETHERLANDS

A SHIMMERINGBAND

Located on the site of the former stadium of ADO Den Haag, a new sports complex with changeable facade and an array of possible uses is attracting a lot of attention.

If you take a walk through the Zuiderpark, you are immediately confronted by an optical illusion. This is due to the band stretch-ing around the new sports campus in The Hague (NL), which is made up of brightly shimmering metal panels whose reflection gives the impression of movement.

A WEALTH OF SPORTSThe symbolism matches the sheer wealth of sports and activities that take place here. For example, the campus is not only a train-ing hub and venue for elite sport, but also an education centre thanks to its sports medicine facilities and training rooms. This is in addition to the sports halls, a fitness studio and a martial arts dojo, which are also available for recreational sports.

A WIDE SELECTIONThe array of Geberit products installed in the sports campus is also impressive and ranges from Mapress pipes and fittings made of copper and carbon steel and the Pluvia roof drainage system right through to the Duofix installation system and Rimfree WC ceramic appliances from the brand Sphinx.
