    of the bottom map image.

    Pupils from each of these schools researched thehistory of their local area, and focused on the

    stories behind the street names.Characters in the Butetown history:

    The 1st and 2nd Marquises of Bute, Maria andSophia (wifes of the 2nd Marquis)

    Tommy Letton, Johnnie Onion, the Duke ofClarence, Onesiphorous Tyndall Bruce, CharlesHunter, David Lloyd George.

    The residents of Tiger Bay.

    History

    The land that is Butetown was originally reclaimedmoorland that was washed with the tide of theBristol Channel and feed by the river Taff.

    In 1796 the Glamorganshire canal was builtthrough the land of Butetown but it was another 45years before the land was made suitable for people

    to live on. In 1836 construction began on ButeStreet and in 1845 homes were built for merchants

    and the growing number of seamen and dockworkers.

    It has been the landscape setting for the 19th

    century coal trade boom and has been the settledhome of immigrants from across the world.

    Tiger Bay, the Docks orthe Bay lies east of theriver Taff and north of

    the Bristol Channel.

    1915: At the south end of Bute St,dock workers strike for better

    pay.Today it is brimming withoffice workers and tourists.

    1805: The Sea lock of theGlamorganshire Canal. Todayit is buried under the entranceof the motorway tunnel.

    1890: Prince Albert Victor,Duke of Clarence andAvondale

    Street Stories

    BUTETOWN FROM 1790 TO 2008

    John Stuart 1st Marquis of Bute instigates thedevelopment of the coal trade. TheGlamorganshire canal is completed. He died in

    1814 and his title passed to his grandson. ButeStreet is first laid out in 1836. John Stuart 2ndMarquis of Bute expands the docks and in 1845orders houses to be built in Butetown. He died in

    1848 and his title passed to his son John PatrickCrichton Stuart.

    The Hamadryad and Havannah hospital ships

    cared for seamen and local children during the1860s.

    The son of Queen Alexandra, Prince AlbertVictor the Duke of Clarence and Avondale,

    opened Clarence bridge in 1890. The streets inthis area retain this memory, ClarenceEmbankment, Clarence Road and AvondaleHouse.

    The highly regarded Loudoun Square, namedafter the maternal family name of MarquessSophia, 2nd wife of the 2nd Marquis of Bute.

    Sophia also had a street named after her.

    Many residents were angered at the demolitionLoudoun Square and its reconstruction as a twin

    tower block during the 1960s.

    David Lloyd George became Prime Minister, butin 1915 he had fought for the striking dock

    workers of Butetown to receive better pay.

    The lost streets of Butetown:

    Powell Place, Peel Street, the streets surroundingSt.Marys Church, George Street and many more.

    The streets and the families who lived on themwill soon exist only in memory.

    A local man who served the community in many

    guises has a street named after him. TommyLetton and his fish vending cart served thecommunity for many years. During the 1980s

    Butetown used have an annual carnival on CanalPark (The Glamorganshire Canal). In the 1990sthe Cardiff Bay Development Corporation spend1 Billion on regeneration of the bay. Imagesbelow: Bute St in 1950, Tommy 2008
