It is said that true leadership begins to happen as we allow our own authenticity to show through. Our authenticity is at the core of our strength as a leader. Knowing ourselves makes it possible for that authenticity to take shape. That

is why the first step to learning to lead is to learn to know yourself - to truly know your strengths, your values, and your working style.

As you look at yourself, as you strive to know yourself better, consider these three steps. Each step should help you gain a deeper understanding of who you really are.

Step 1: Assess. This involves taking inventory of yourself. You may find it helpful to use assessment tools in this process. It may also involve asking others to complete feedback surveys on you and then looking at the results.

Step 2: Discuss. This step involves actually sitting down and discussing yourself with others. This is not always an easy thing to do. It takes time. And it takes a certain level of trust on the part of yourself and the person you are talking to . . . about you. The key is to identify a few trusted associates, who care about your success, and then put some trust in them to help you gain a better picture of you.

Step 3: Reflect. Reflect on the experiences you have. Every day we are presented with new challenges and situations. Each of these experiences gives us an opportunity to learn more about ourselves, if we will make the effort to do so. We must develop the discipline to look at ourselves and to coach ourselves.

Let’s get started on this action assignment!

Know Yourself

Strengths are talents that we have developed.

Know Your Strengths

Step #1 Step #2 Step #3Ask 3-10 trusted friends, colleagues, or family members what your greatest strengths are. Ask them to clarify how these strengths have contributed to your success as a leader.

Make a final list of your strengths. Choose the top five that you truly believe are your greatest strengths.

Complete part two on the next page.

Strengths

Our leadership strengths are the talents that we possess that enable us to succeed as a leader. In reality, each of us has a unique set of strengths. As a leader, it is essential that you know and understand

your strengths. Why? Donald O. Clifton, referred to as the father of strength-based psychology, once said “A leader needs to know his strengths as a carpenter knows his tools, or as a physician knows the instruments at her disposal. What great leaders have in common is that each truly knows his or her strengths -- and can call on the right strength at the right time.”

Know Yourself

If we are aware of our style, we can be more authentic

Know Your Working Style

Step #1 Step #2 Step #3Ask your manager, coach, or HR representative which tools or instruments might be available to you to help you assess and discuss your working style. There are a variety of tools out there. They include: Meyers-Brigg Type Indicator; DiSC; True Colors; Social Styles; and many others. Complete at least one of these assessments.

Discuss your working style with one or more close trusted associates. When you feel you have an understanding of your own working style complete step 3.

Complete part two on the next page.

Style

Our working style is a general description of our patterns and preferences in relating to and leading others. Our style is the result of a combination of our beliefs, values and preferences.

There is no one style that is just right. The process of exploring and clarifying our style is a valuable practice. If we are aware of our own style we will be in a better position to lead with authenticity.
