“Thebiggestthingthatdownholeinstrumentation(P/T)givesusisthelinersubcool,ameasureoftheamountoffluidinyoursteamchamberabovetheproducerwell.ThebiggestrisktodamagingSAGDwellsisflashingsteamacrosstheliner,whichoccurswhenthefluidthatiscomingintothewelldropstoitssaturationpressureforthetemperatureitisatasitpassesthroughtheliner.Atthispoint,thefluidundergoesaphasechangefromliquidtovapor(steam),thusvelocityincreasessubstantiallyandcanwashoutliners,compromisingabilitytocontrolsand.Linersubcooliscalculatedastheassociatedsaturationtemperaturetotheproducingbottomholepressure,thensubtractingtheproducingbottomholetemperature(tellsyouhowfaryouarefromasaturatedsteamcondition).Forevery10degCoflinersubcool,thisrepresents1meteroffluidaboveyourproducingwell.Optimal(mostefficient)SAGDoperationisat0degCsubcool,howeverduetothenaturethatinstrumentationisnot100%accurate,wellsarenotflat(goupanddown),anddrawdownisnotevenlydistributedalongthewellpath,wetargetaminimumof10degClinersubcool,targeting20degCinthepastduetoourlackofreliabledownholeP/Tmeasurement.Withbetterinstrumentation,wewillpushsubcoolslowerthanwherewecurrentlyoperateasitismoreconservative.”“Bybeingabletoaccuratelyknowbottomholetemperatureandpressure,youcanoperateatlowersubcoolsbecauseyouhavetheconfidencethatyourcalculationsarecorrect.It’stoughtoputa%increaseonit,butattheendofthedayIfyoudon’tknowthesubcool,youoperatemuchmoreconservativelyandthusrequirealotmorewellstogetthesameamountofproduction.Morewellsmeanalotmorecapitalupfront,addedtothefactthatrunningathighersubcoolsislowerefficiencyinthethermalworld(higherSOR-steamoilratio,whichisakeymetricforcomparingeconomicsofdifferentplaysandgivesagoodindicationofreservoirqualityandoperationalefficiency).We’veeasilyhadwellswitha20%productionincreasebeingabletospeedthemupknowingthatyouarestillsafewhereyouareoperating,butotherwellsyoumayfindyouralreadyrunningatlowersubcoolsandseeminimalincrease.”
