increasing proportion of the world’s timber supplies in future decades. However, because of their increasing importance, management of these forests will need to pay greater attention to silvicultural practices which can help to sustain and improve the delivery of a range of other values besides timber production. Some indications about how this might be achieved can be gained from an examination

Interactions in the Context of Multifunctional Forestry Author: Marzano, M. Co-author: Quine, C.P.; Dandy, N. Imprint: 2014 Description: pp 55-69 Series: Forestry Sciences Main subject: FORESTRY SCIENCE Subjects: FOREST; CLIMATE CHANGE; FCRA AUTHORS; 2014-FR-CAT-1 Abstract: People and wildlife interact in many ways and recently there has been increased

recognition that forests have multiple uses and management objectives providing opportunities for recreation, education, conservation and enhancement of biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and the production of timber and fuel. Whilst many benefits can perhaps be delivered simultaneously, there is potential for conflict between these objectives. In this chapter we focus on the possibly contradictory objectives of recreation and conservation. Forests are increasingly places where human-wildlife interactions occur through recreational activities such as walking, cycling, nature-watching, and general visits to relax, play and/or picnic. The pursuit of outdoor recreational activities can have substantial human benefits including improved mental and physical health; and there is evidence to suggest that positive recreational experiences are associated with natural [forest] settings where there is an opportunity to see or hear wildlife...

Imprint: 2014 Description: pp 341-373 Series: Forestry Sciences Main subject: FORESTRY SCIENCE Subjects: FOREST; CLIMATE CHANGE; FCRA AUTHOR; 2014-FR-CAT-1 Abstract: Although widely considered to be a core aspect of quality assurance of climate

change mitigation activities, additionality remains a source of much controversy in relation to carbon accounting and carbon markets. This chapter illuminates the multi-faceted nature of the concept and develops a taxonomy of different forms. It provides an overview of how additionality is currently applied in relation to both compliance and voluntary carbon markets, including tests used and underlying evidence base requirements. This draws upon and updates an earlier review commissioned to help inform development of a Woodland Carbon Code designed to underpin climate change mitigation activities in the UK by the forest sector. Sources of uncertainty and trade-offs in practical application of the concept are highlighted, and potential perverse incentives explored.

detect individual tree crowns in two areas of the UK: Aberfoyle (Scotland) and Kielder Forest (North of England). This method is building from the lessons learned in the use of other methods used in the past over the same areas. The new method aims at the location of tree tops, using a canopy height model (CHM) derived from airborne LiDAR, by looking at the degree of exposure of each cell compared to its neighbours. Then, the model uses a pouring method constrained by ground classes, a maximum canopy expansion threshold and the location of sheltered spots in the CHM. The results are evaluated at a stand level using field plots. The method shows a good detection of individual trees (c 90 % accuracy) and top height (c. 100 %). Basal area and volume were overpredicted by 10–20 % due to crown clumping by small canopies growing in the proximity of the larger ones.

Imprint: 2014 Description: pp 241-266 Series: Forestry Sciences Main subject: FORESTRY SCIENCE Subjects: FOREST; CLIMATE CHANGE; FCRA AUTHORS; 2014-FR-CAT-1 Abstract: Temperate and boreal forests represent substantial stocks of carbon as biomass

and organic matter. Depending on the extent of climate change and the nature of future management practices, these forests may lose, retain or accumulate carbon in future decades. We review data on the impact of management on forest carbon, and we lay out some management options including longer rotations, lower disturbance, nitrogen fertilization and the afforestation of new land. We ask whether the carbon gains made possible by such practices will be at the expense of timber production and also we examine the impact of these practices on a range of environmental services (nature conservation, watershed protection, public amenity value, bio-fuel production). We look forward to a period of warming, which favours more rapid growth of trees in northern regions, but predictions from ecosystem models must be tempered by the likelihood that there may be more extremes, including droughts, storms and outbreaks of new pests and diseases.

Abstract: Decision support systems (DSSs) are important in decision-making environments with conflicting interests. Many DSSs developed have not been used in practice. Experts argue that these tools do not respond to real user needs and that the inclusion of stakeholders in the development process is the solution. However, it is not clear which features of participatory development of DSSs result in improved uptake and better outcomes. A review of papers, reporting on case studies where DSSs and other decision tools (information systems, software and scenario tools) were developed with elements of participation, was carried out...

Abstract: Short rotation forestry (SRF) which consists of planting rapidly growing native and non-native tree species has been introduced to the UK to increase woody biomass production. A largely unknown aspect of SRF species is their interaction with soil fauna, of which the earthworm community is a major component. Earthworms have a pronounced impact on litter decomposition, nutrient cycling and tree growth. Conversely, tree litter and root chemistry can impact on the associated earthworm community development. The aim of this study was to determine direct interactions between SRF species and earthworms. A field-based mesocosm experiment was conducted using Betula pendula (birch) and Eucalyptus nitens (eucalyptus) with two earthworm species Lumbricus terrestris and Allolobophora chlorotica...

Abstract: Short Rotation Forestry (SRF) practice which includes use of rapidly growing native and non-native tree species has been introduced to the UK as a method to increase woody biomass production. A largely unknown aspect of SRF is the quality of leaf litter, and its palatability to the soil decomposer community of which earthworms are a major component. The aims of the present study were to investigate and compare the preference of selected native British earthworms for selected SRF species litter. These were addressed through a series of controlled laboratory experiments. Choice chambers were used to quantify litter removal by Allolobophora chlorotica, Aporrectodea caliginosa, Aporrectodea longa and Lumbricus terrestris over a period up to five weeks...

Abstract: Carbon (C) stocks in forest soils were evaluated in the first comprehensive survey of Great Britain, the BioSoil soil survey, using a total of 167 plots (72 in England, 26 in Wales and 69 in Scotland). The average C stock down to 80 cm depth for seven main soil types ranged between 108 and 448 t C/ha with maximum values from 511 to 927 t C/ha. Carbon stock varied with soil depth and type, forest type, and stand age. Stocks within the upper mineral soil (0–20 cm) represented between 29 and 69% of the total 0–80 cm C stock, while those in the top 40 cm comprised 59–100% of the total. Carbon stocks decreased in the order deep peats > peaty gleys > groundwater gleys > surface-water gleys > podzols and ironpans > brown earths > rankers and rendzinas. Litter and fermentation horizons on average contributed an additional 7.3 and 8.8 t C/ha, respectively, to the overall soil C stock...

SUSTAINABILITY; FCRA AUTHORS; 2014-FR-CAT-2 Abstract: Short Rotation Forestry (SRF) has been introduced to the UK as a method to

increase woody biomass production. However, some SRF species have raised concerns about potential impacts on the environment. A largely unknown aspect of SRF is the quality and quantity of leaf litter, and its impact on soil fauna, of which the earthworm community is a major component. Earthworms have direct impacts on soil biogeochemistry of SRF systems, and the tree species can impact on the associated earthworm community. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of SRF species on earthworm diversity and population growth. Earthworm surveys and a litter mass loss study were conducted at a range of SRF trial sites. Associated laboratory experiments were also carried out to examine the direct effect of SRF litter on earthworm growth and reproduction. Overall survey results suggested that SRF affects earthworm community development depending on tree species, soil type and land-use history.

Abstract: This paper addresses the economic dimensions of climate change mitigation by afforestation in the UK and the necessity of reconciling sustainable development with carbon sequestration forest policy initiatives. Present value costs per tonne of carbon sequestration through the creation of new forests are estimated, and results of a static comparative analysis, aiming to show the influence of key variables on the costs, are presented and discussed. The paper provides empirical evidence of the cost effectiveness of the establishment of forest plantations for climate change mitigation in different locations in the UK, identifying also the importance of placing forestry for carbon sequestration in the general context of rural land use, where significant policy reforms can be anticipated.

Main subject: TREE HEALTH Subjects: FCRA AUTHOR; 2015-FR-CAT-2 Abstract: Proanthocyanidins (PAs) are common polyphenolic polymers of plants found in

foliage, fruit, bark, roots, rhizomes, and seed coats that consist of flavan-3-ol units such as 2,3-trans-(+)-catechin and 2,3-cis-(–)-epicatechin. Although the biosynthesis of flavan-3-ols has been studied in angiosperms, little is known about their biosynthesis and ecological roles in gymnosperms. In this study, the genes encoding leucoanthocyanidin reductase, a branch point enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of 2,3-trans-(+)- flavan-3-ols, were identified and functionally characterized in Norway spruce (Picea abies), the most widespread and economically important conifer in Europe.

oak tissue in the UK and USA. Partial gyrB sequencing placed ten strains in the genus Brenneria, with B. goodwinii as the closest phylogenetic relative. The strains were investigated further using a polyphasic approach including MLSA (based on partial gyrB, rpoB, infB and atpD gene sequences), 16S rRNA gene sequencing, DNA-DNA relatedness studies and both phenotypic and chemotaxonomic assays. The MLSA and 16S rRNA gene analyses separated the strains into two groups based on origin, suggesting that they belong to Brenneria as two novel species. However, the DNA-DNA relatedness values revealed a

As the two groups of strains from the UK and USA can be differentiated from each other phenotypically and by ERIC PCR fingerprints, it is proposed to classify them as novel subspecies of a novel Brenneria species. The name Brenneria roseae sp. nov. (FRB 222T = LMG 27714T = NCPPB 4581T) is proposed, with Brenneria roseae subsp. roseae ssp. nov. FRESHWATERS; ACID WATERS; FCRA AUTHOR; 2014-FR-CAT-3 Notes: 16 pages Abstract: Forests and forest management practices can affect surface water acidification in

a number of ways. The primary mechanism is the ability of tree canopies to capture more sulphur and nitrogen pollutants from the atmosphere than other types of vegetation. Pollutant scavenging is expected to have peaked in the 1970s when emissions were greatest and led to surface waters draining catchments dominated by forestry being more acidic. The introduction of emission control policies in the 1980s has achieved major improvements in air quality and studies show forest sites to be recovering in line with their moorland counterparts...

England, Scotland and Wales. The rise is the result of both social pressure and changes in policy. Groups are keen to learn from each other’s experiences, and policy stakeholders seek evidence of the effectiveness of past and current policy. AUTHOR; 2014-FR-CAT-5 Abstract: TSOB is of great concern in the UK because of its association with declining oak

woodlands, particularly those affected by AOD. A pilot study on laboratory culturing methods gave an unprecedented opportunity to study TSOB's lifecycle and behaviour. By measuring larval development at constant temperatures in the laboratory, we plan to predict development time in the field, and to investigate whether temperature may limit the beetle's distribution in the UK. We are also planning a set of field experiments that will examine what makes an oak tree susceptible to attack by the beetle.

Company: Forestry Edition: doi: 10.1093/forestry/cpu010 Imprint: Oxford Journals, 2014 Description: 17 pages Main subject: TREE HEALTH Subjects: FCRA AUTHORS; 2015-FR-CAT-5 Abstract: Acute Oak Decline (AOD) is a relatively new decline-disease affecting both native

oak species (Quercus robur and Q. petraea) in Britain. The key aim of this study was to describe the symptoms, and signs of AOD, to set a baseline. The second aim was to compare and review the European literature on what appear to be similar disorders on oak. AOD is characterized by four key features: weeping patches more-or-less vertically aligned on oak tree trunks; cracks between bark plates from which dark fluid seeps; inner bark necrosis and the presence (in .90 per cent of cases) of larval galleries of the oak buprestid, Agrilus biguttatus, on the phloem–sapwood interface. In this study, it was noted that although larval galleries were present in the inner bark in 19 of 21 trees, the ‘D-shaped’ exit holes of the adult beetles were seen less frequently on bark plates of affected trees (33 per cent of cases)...

CAT-11 Abstract: Chaired seminar in Aberfoyle c. 50 participants from Forestry Sectors including

research commissioners, analysts, forest managers, Scottish Government. This seminar focussed on the key climate change threats facing Scotland’s forests, and explored how we can manage our forests to adapt to these threats. We heard experiences of managing forests for climate change from forest managers at Queen Elizabeth Forest Park. There was an opportunity to consider current barriers to change, and explore what could be done to enable the forest sector to adapt through discussion and Q&A sessions. This was the first site in ‘Scotland’s Climate Ready Forest Network’ which provided an opportunity for the forest sector from across Scotland to share their experiences of adapting to climate change, to consider best practice, and identify key knowledge gaps.
