    care and ensure safety to patients in the operating room, )*+ (knowledge, *kills,

    +ttitude$ is highly essential in any aspect inside the theatre% 'he following are some

    of the aspects which highlights the )*+ of an OR nurse

    a% -atient.centered care

     'he nurse must recogni/e the patient as the source of control and full

    partner in providing compassionate and coordinated care based on respect

    for patient0s preferences, values, and needs% + knowledgeable nurse

    integrates understanding of multiple dimensions of patient. centered care

    such as patient preferences, values, coordination and integration of care,information, communication, and education, physical comfort and emotional

    support especially when patient is an1ious while inside the operating room%

    *kills needed include communicating patient values, preferences and

    e1pressed needs to other members of health care team and provide care with

    sensitivity and respect for the diversity of the patient% 'he nurse must also

    ensure that the care must not only for short. term but for continuity of care

    until recovery phase% 2onitoring of patient before, during and after surgery is

    essential% +ttitude accounts for respect, valuing the patient0s e1pertise with

    own health, putting patient as the focus and acknowledging that patient

    e1pectations in3uence outcomes in management of pain or su4ering% 'he

    nurse must put him5 herself as the feet of the patient while he is5 she is week%

    b% 'eam work and Collaboration

     'he nurse must function e4ectively within nursing and inter.

    professional teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect, and

    shared decision.making to achieve uality patient care% )nowledge includes

    describing strategies for identifying and managing overlaps in team member

    roles and accountabilities and being able to recogni/e contributions of other

    individuals and groups in the success of the procedure undertaken by the

    patient% *kills demand the assumption of individual role as a team member or

    resolution of con3ict and disagreement and anticipation of needs before,

    during and after the procedure%

     'he OR nurse must have the knowledge to recogni/e that nursing and

    other health professions such as students are parts of the OR team and not

    or paraphernalia in determining the status of patients pre. op, intra. op and

    post. operatively% +n attitude of appreciating that continuous uality

    improvement is an essential part of the daily work of all health professionals

     'he OR nurse minimi/es risk of harm to patients and providers through

    both system e4ectiveness and individual performance% + knowledgeable

    nurse must e1amine human factors and other basic safety design principles

    as well as commonly used unsafe practices in handling patients% 'he nurse

    must describe factors that create a culture of safety such as, open

    communication strategies% 'he nurse must be knowledgeable of the

    instruments being used in the procedure such as the numbers of each

    instruments, sponges and the like% + nurse is skillful if she5 he employs

    correct handling, proper counting, etc% of the instruments ensuring safety to

    own self, other team members and to the patient for a smooth operation%

    +nticipation and presence of mind weigh much as attitudes when inside the

    theatre%
