Knox crime rate jumps 15%BY TARA MCGRATH

KNOX residents have been warned to stopbeing blase as new crime statistics show theareas crime rate has skyrocketed by more thandouble the state average in the past 12months.

Robbery, burglary and motor vehicle theftincreased the most, while assaults other thanfamily violence was the only category of crimeto decrease.

Crime across the state rose by 7.8 per cent, but in Knox increased by 15 per cent one ofthe highest increases recorded.

Acting Inspector Peter Trichia of Knoxpolice said residents should not be alarmed. One of the main reasons for the rapid increase

was because family violence incidents werenow recordedmore accurately.

But he said a rise in burglaries across themunicipality was due to people providing easyaccess for opportunistic thieves.

Thieves might try and open 100 car doorsand find two unlocked, or try opening 10 gar-age doors and open one its an opportunisticcrime.

He encouraged residents to be particularlyvigilant by locking their cars securely whenthey were parked.

Dont be blase you have to be aware ofyour surroundings.

Family violence crimes increased by almost20 per cent, Acting Inspector Trichias saying

one of the contributing factors was that thepolicy stating that all family violence crimes even those causing no injuries must bereported, was being strictly adhered to byofficers.

Knox police have been targeting recidivistoffenders and high-risk locations, he said.

There was some good news for Knox resid-ents with no road fatalities recorded betweenOctober 1, 2011 and September 30 last year.

Injuries were also down 12 per cent andKnox highway patrols Sergeant David Youngsaid this was due to driver behaviour changing.

We have the community to thank for that, without their behaviours on the road changingwe cant get anywhere.

Rowville link off therails for at least 10 yearsTHE Rowville Rail Link was yes-terday shunted to the back of thetransport initiatives queue, behindthe Melbourne Metro One CBDtunnel project and the upgrade ofthe Dandenong rail line.

The overdue release of the Row-ville Rail feasibility reportrevealed that while the link is tech-nically feasible, it is at least 10years from being realised.

The link needs capacityupgrades in the city and at Dande-nong before it can proceed.

Public Transport Victoria chiefexecutive Ian Dobbs said MetroOne wasnt likely to be completeduntil at least 2022.

Asked whether people shouldnot hold their breath for a Row-ville rail line, Will McDougall ofproject consultants Sinclair KnightMerz said simply: Maybe.

He said the proposed line ran toStud Park, a more expensive

option, after community feedbackshowed the corner of Wellingtonand Stud roads was less preferred.

In the meantime, PTV wouldconsider improved bus services.

"It would be foolish to try andbuild a rail line in the suburbs thatcouldnt get trains into the city,"MrMcDougall said.

Information to shape federalspending on Dandenong line sig-nalling and level crossingimprovements is with Infrastruc-ture Australia.

Opposition Leader DanielAndrews, who lives in the area, said: This things decades off, theres so many other projectsahead.

He welcomed extra buses toMonash University but said thisis not what people were promisedin the south-east.

Re: Carrington Park pavilion plansCongratulations to the Knox councillors for havingthe guts to stand up for the ratepayers and rejectprojects that are over-budget.

    Peter (via web)

What a great decision by Knox Council on Tuesdaynight. For a project that doesnt meet the criteria ofopen-space development and was well over budget,

$1million could go a lot further. While I cantcomment on the cricket club, the Scoresby JuniorFootball Club is a debacle with families leaving indroves and the inability to field at least two year-level teams this year. In an act that highlights thebad language that has been experienced at theclub, they took themselves to new heights onTuesday and breached their officials, membersand supporters code of conduct which declares:Lead by example, respect all players, coaches, officials and spectators physical and/or verbalabuse will not be tolerated.

The adults behaviour in front of their ownchildren, again setting an awful example for ouryouths, was deplorable.

It would be nice to see helmets on our childrenor a ground that isnt a mud pit in winter.

These things are muchmore valuable, cost a lotless, and have a greater impact on teammoralethan winning a $1million new pavilion.

No Under 10s Team Mum (via web)

Our rates are paying off debt of $12million for asports precinct that most of Knox do not usethe $2million to pay for the cracked counciloffices would have paid for Carrington.

With Knox councillors taking interstate business-class joy rides, and the mayor driving Knox 1 agas-guzzling Statesman its about time we got awhole new standard of governance to get Victoria onthe move.

Show Me the Money (via web)

What theyve failed to show is that they have alreadyspent more than $100,000 on this project just towalk away from it. Congratulations to Cr NicoleSeymour on voting to lose a $1million investment inyour ownward. With you on the council we canwatch as other wards flourish at your expense. Youhave lost my vote.

    Clubs angry overpavilion backdown

Deflated: Scoresby Junior Football Club and Scoresby womens football team are devastated by a decision tocancel Carrington Park pavilion upgrades. Picture: Wayne Hawkins.

    BY TARA McGRATH

Its so disparate and unloved, every single facility is strugglingdown there. Nicole Seymour

KNOX Councils decision to scrap its planned$930,000 rebuilding of the Carrington Parkpavilion has outraged sporting clubs, but theirbehaviour in the council chambers last week leftthemwith few supporters.

More than 200 junior and adult members ofthe football and cricket clubs shouted objectionsand obscenities, and demanded councillors cutyour wages as they prepared to vote down theredevelopment plan.

Knoxfield Cricket Club and Scoresby JuniorFootball Club were warned last year the rebuild-ing was likely to be scrapped once the combinedcouncil and clubs funding fell short of the win-ning $1.13million tender.

Cr Nicole Seymour, who led the motion to can-cel the project, said checking details of the pro-ject raised a number of red flags for her.

Wanting to confirm whether the clubs had thefunds they had committed to the project, Cr Sey-mour visited them. When I asked, they crackedit, she said.

Each club committed $30,000 to be paid

before the project began, which they had in thebank after fund-raising, but Cr Seymour said itwould wipe out all the clubs funds for operatingcosts and paying rent.

Neither club had any money for the secondinstalment another $30,000 each due at thecompletion of the project and Cr Seymoursaid because both were small clubs on thedecline with management issues she was notconfident they would meet the deadline.

Cr Seymour instead successfully moved a

motion for a master plan for the Carrington Parkprecinct to be considered in the 2013-14 budget.

But as councillors discussed the motion, thegallery erupted with loud boos and shouts ofcrap. Several protestors stormed out, shoutingabuse as they left. Many chanted their club song.

The project was spearheaded last year by for-

mer councillor Andrew Walter, who was with theprotest group which included members ofScoresby Junior Football Club, KnoxfieldCricket Club and Scoresby womens footballteam.

Mayor Karin Orpen said she felt very con-cerned for the children who were in the middle ofthe drama. The looks on their faces, they didntunderstand, they were startled, she said.

Cr Adam Gill said while the clubs behaviourdid not influence his vote, he was not impressedby previous incidents. Earlier sexist and my-sogynistic behaviour towards the mayor andward councillor should stop.

Cr Seymour said while she understood theiranger, members did themselves a major disser-

vice at the meeting. The kids were so well-behaved, but the parents left a bit to be desired. Itreinforced the question of if there is a culturalissue at the club.

She said other clubs and facilities at the Knox-field precinct including a snooker club, tennisclub, aged care facility and community garden equally deserved funding.

Its so disparate and unloved, every singlefacility is struggling down there. The remote con-trol car club does not even have toilets.

Scoresby Junior Football Club president ChrisRogers said his club had complied with everyrequest the council demanded and deliveredeverything we promised to do and yet the roomswere still knocked back.

    Hey, Mr Ukulele Man

Rocking out:Students Nathanand Lachie jamwith their musicteachers RhysLett (on drums)and DaveHartney(with ukulele).Picture: Rob Carew

    BY TARA McGRATH

YOU dont hear it so often these days:that head-banging, ear-bursting,thrash guitar playing that can makeparents shudder when the powerchords ring out from the lounge room.

Nowadays musical novices aremore likely to be strumming on anacoustic guitar or ukulele and listeningto blues and roots music.

The shifting genres are reflected inthe music classes young people arechoosing to attend.

At Boronias Eastern SuburbsSchool of Music, enrolments haveincreased almost 30 per cent in thepast two years and its the teen queensand blues dudes inspiring this genera-tion.

Rhys Lett took ownership of themusic school two years ago afterworking there as a teacher for theprevious 10 years.

When he took over, he saw a highdemand for ukulele and banjo classesand has been consistently busy sincethey were introduced.

Jack Johnson and Mumford andSons are really what started this folkrevival and whole acoustic thing.

People want to play their music andplay the banjo and ukulele, Lett said.

The music school is affiliated withKCs Rock Shop in Boronia, and Lettremembers when the ukulele was justa humble toy instrument costing only$20.

Ukuleles now occupy an entire wallat the shop and can cost up to $1000.

Part of the ukuleles appeal was itssize.

I never thought it would be so pop-ular, he said. Its a nice and handy, portable instrument that can be takenanywhere.

But extreme metal wasnt dead justyet and many musos were happy todouble dip in both genres, Lett said.

VCE guitar student Lachie is one ofthose former metalheads. Despitebeing a Mumford and Sons fan thesedays, he still tunes in to music bybands such as Parkway Drive and TheAmity Affliction.

    Whats popular is two polar

opposites gentle folk music andthen screamingmetal, Lett said.

Young girls are inspired to pick upthe guitar after seeing teen idols likeTaylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and KatyPerry play.

Thirteen-year-old Lara Karak, wholearns guitar with Lett, says one of herfavourite tunes to play is Taylor SwiftsWe Are Never Ever Getting BackTogether.

Another change in the musicindustry that Lett has seen is buddingmusicians learning the basics fromYouTube. But he does not see it as anegative.

I dont think anything like that isbad YouTube, Idol, The X-Factor if it gets just one kid interested.

Lara said she had learnt to playseveral Justin Bieber songs after find-ing tutorials people had uploadedonline.

The one constant in the musicworld, Lett declares, is everyage groups love for the bandQueen.

After all, isnt rocknroll onebohemian rhapsody after another.

    Define convenient storeBY TARA McGRATH

JUST what exactly defines a conveni-ent walk to the shops? Is it the overalldistance, or how steep the climb?

One persons easy stroll might beanothers unwanted hike depending onthe weather or the bags of groceries tobe lugged home.

That is just one of the issues thatplanning tribunal member Alison Slat-tery will have to consider as shedecides on the future of a proposeddouble-storey apartment complex at66 Boronia Road, Boronia.

Angry residents last week tookKnox Council to the Victorian Civiland Administrative Tribunal after thecouncil approved the controversial11-dwellings development in June lastyear.

Despite receiving 474 objections, the council gave conditional approvalto the project. The applicant agreed tothe councils conditions.

However, residents chose to fundtheir own appeal and town plannerGerard Gilfedder last week lodged

their concerns at the VCAT regardingthe design of the building, road safetyand waste collection. One of the mostcontroversial points, though, waswhether the complex was actuallyclose enough to the Boronia shops tobe considered convenient.

Mr Gilfedder said one of the routesto the shopping village had steps and itcould be a bit of a hike when carry-ing shopping.

But Rachael Bowden, representingthe applicant Peter Brown Architects, said that during a site visit she easilycompleted the 750-metre walk, evenwith her 20-month old son in tow

I am really struggling to see how itis not within walking distance it isunfathomable for me.

The extra traffic that would fre-quent Marie Street has also caused dis-tress for Boronia residents. AnthonySearle, an outspoken critic of over-development in Boronia, previouslysaid it was only a matter of timebefore someone is killed there.

But the councils representativeAnthony De Pasquale said there had

been no accidents on the street in thepast five years and the average speedhad dropped since 2011 after a policeoperation.

Mr Gilfedder argued that MarieStreet through to Boronia Road wasthe most common route to the localshops from nearby streets, addingadditional pressure to the street

To add vehicle movements, itwould have profoundly detrimentaleffects, he said.

While residents attacked the devel-opments design, Ms Bowden saidarchitecture will never satisfy every-one.

There are a variety of finishes andmaterials . . . the architect has designedmany properties in the area and youcan see how they integrate.

But Mr Gilfedder said it did notmeet several state or council policiesthat called for the development toachieve architectural excellence orenhance the public realm or neigh-bourhood.

A decision will be made after theVCATmember has made a site visit.

    Cornucopia in their garden

Robyn Phoenix and Margaret Curtis keepan eye on whats ripe and whats thrivingin the Ferntree Gully community garden.

    Picture: Rob Carew

TWELVE months after residentscreated their shared garden a bountyof fruit, vegetables and herbs is grow-ing at Ferntree Gullys social housingdevelopment.

The developments communitygarden where residents had been duti-fully tending to the plots was last weekofficially unveiled.

Robyn Phoenix, said a resident initi-ated the idea. There was a lot ofinterest, even the children theymade the scarecrow, she said.

Four raised beds house strawber-ries, herbs, corn, lettuce, tomatoes, zucchini and cucumbers.

Residents are rostered to maintainthe site and are told when the produceis ripe then you just go and pickwhat you want, Ms Phoenix said.

She said the garden had helped tounite the residents: Instead of walk-ing around with our heads down, welook up at each other and say hello..

Steve Bevington the managingdirector for Community Housing Lim-ited said gardening provided theopportunity for residents to socialise, share knowledge and grow cost-effective vegetables.

    Carers relate thejoys of fostering

Fostering love: Knox mothers Belinda Henwood-Jones and Trish Hortstall are featured in a new book aboutfoster carers. Picture: Sam Stiglec

    BY TARA McGRATH

TRISH Horstall will never forget the smile on theface of her foster child while he swam in a hotelpool on a family holiday in Queensland.

It was just great to see him having such agood time. It was the joy of doing something thatI would usually take for granted, the Wantirnafoster carer said.

Many people do not realise the significantimpact foster carers have on the children theycare for and that sometimes that includes the fos-ter carers themselves.

A new book produced by Anchor an inde-pendent organisation managing foster carers inKnox and parts of Yarra Ranges acknowl-edges the dedication of foster carers by tellingtheir stories.

Anchor volunteer co-ordinator Janet Halsallinterviewed 40 carers to compile the book whichshe said would make people realise the influencefoster carers had on a childs life now and in thefuture.

One carers story about why she became

involved in fostering is a highlight of the book,MsHalsall says. The carers aunt a foster carerliving in America opened her front door oneday to a man in army uniform.

She didnt recognise him until he said: When Iwas three you took me in and I stayed until I waseight, then I was returned to my birth parentsand I have been in and out of foster since. I neverreally had a proper home anywhere else buthere.

The soldier told his former carer he was leav-ing to fight overseas. There was nobody on theplanet to care if he came back or not, but hewanted her to know how much their timetogether meant.

Of course, the aunt was overcome with emo-tion and they talked and exchanged contactdetails, Ms Halsall said. The day after the nieceheard that story, she called Anchor and appliedto be a foster carer.

The aim of the book is to encourage other fam-ilies to open their home and heart to children des-perately needing care.

Its good to get it out there that were not

supermums, were just normal mums. Peopleask, how can you do it, but its not that hard,Ms Horstall said. When youve got kids already, you just find more time. If youre doing it any-way, its not such a struggle.

Belinda Henwood-Jones has four children ofher own but decided to become a foster carer 18months ago. She has been caring for a nine-month old boy since he was seven days old.

For her family, its not just the child that bene-fits from the experience. By being a foster carer,

I am also teaching my kids that it is important tohelp other people, MsHenwood-Jones said.

Ms Halsall said the secondary impact of fostercaring was not something she was expecting tohear so much about.

The positive impact on the kids, about shar-ing and how fortunate they are in comparison toothers and how its really an important com-munity role to help those who are not as fortu-nate was an ongoing theme.

No lift at Leisureworks centreCOUNCILLORS have officially shut downany possibility of a lift at the Knox Leisure-works centre within the next few years, but achange room with a hoist for the disabledwill be a serious consideration during thisyears budget discussions.

There were repeated calls from councillorsat their meeting last week to finally put theidea of a lift at the centre to bed, afterthousands of dollars was again spent on areport proving a lift would be impossible tomaintain at the centre.

The lifespan of the lift would be shortbecause of the corrosive nature of the pool

environment and guarantees could not beoffered for longer than a year.

Instead, a motion was passed to consideronly a disabled change room and hoist in the2013-14 budget.

A council report states the most viableoption for a disabled change room would bea purpose built, free-standing facility at thesite and estimated to cost $134,000.

Cr John Mortimore said it was a clear mis-take to not build a disabled change room atthe Boronia centre when it was built and itneeded to be rectified immediately.

    FEATURESTORY

Pennydropsonmachinesthat atemy lifeMost gamblers play the odds to feel something, but Anna Bardsley didit to feel nothing. DANIEL TRAN investigates the hypnotic effects ofproblem gambling.

Arnold Zable has held a writing workshop with formergambling addicts as a form of therapy.

    Picture: John Woudstra/The Age

Anna Bardsley, a former gambler, has written abouther rehabilitation in From Ruin to Recovery.

    Picture: Rob Carew

I went for a drive and thelights beckoned from theside of the road. Literally. Isaw the flashing lights ofthe venue. . . and that wasthe beginning of the end.

    Anna Bardsley

THE grief and frustration that normallydemanded Anna Bardsleys attention fadedto a dull ache as the poker machine whirredto life. The bright lights and wordless tunes hadan almost hypnotic affect, and soon the achingreminders that her daughter was dead and herhusband was consumedwith anger were gone.

In the world of ex-gamblers, Bardsley is differ-ent. Unlike those who gambled for the rush, sheplayed to escape.

It was a way to cope with a lot of tragedy andtrauma and aftermath of all of that which hadgone on for years, she remembers. I was tryingto get away from something that was painful andwhen I went there, I wasnt feeling anything, [I]literally zoned out.

Playing the pokies was recreational family fununtil Bardsley had a fight with her husband onenight.Walking out to cool off, she opened thedoor to addiction.

I went for a drive and the lights beckonedfrom the side of the road. Literally. I saw theflashing lights of the venue and thought I couldgo in there, she said. And that was the begin-ning of the end.

Bardsley doesnt know how long her addictionpersisted, but she does remember carryingaround a Gamblers Help card.

I used to just take it out and look at it. And Idput it back in my purse and think, No, wont doit now, she recalls.

But as she continued to suppress her doubtsand to put off seeking help, other feelingsemerged.

The shame that you feel covers up any senseof self worth that you have. Its like a blanket thatsits over everything.

Bardsley has written about her battle withgambling, and her account forms part of a collec-tion of short stories in From Ruin to Recovery. The book, released byMonashLink CommunityHealth Service, is a compilation of literary workfrom eleven ex-gamblers on their struggles withaddiction. The book was the product of threewriting workshops held atMonashLink byauthor and social advocate Arnold Zable.

Similar workshops have also been held forasylum seekers and Black Saturday survivors as aform of rehabilitation. Id come to see the powerof story in creating self understanding, Zablesays. So theres the art of story and theres also, Iguess, the healing power of story.

The first workshop was held atMonashLinkChadstone in 2011. The group comprised people

from all walks of life students to tradesmenand professionals.

You begin from the premise that any one of uscan be in this predicament, any one of us canbecome gamblers, Zable says.

The success of the program brought in extrafunding to secure another twoworkshops thatwere run late last year.

Zable says writing about their strugglesempowered former addicts.

Once you get the techniques for storytelling, once you develop the skill, youre empowered totell your story and youre empowered, I guess, perhaps to take more control of your own life.

Instead of it being locked up inside, youregetting it out there. Once you start getting it outand expressing it, you begin to work it out.

For Bardsley, dealing with the shame throughwriting has been therapeutic. But she is one ofonly two authors whowere brave enough to puta name on their story. The others used first namesor pseudonyms.

Shame lives in dark places. Shame cant livewhen you put light on it and that was why Idecided to use my name, she says.

About $10 billion is lost on poker machinesevery year, according to the productivity com-mission. This is down from $12 billion.

But despite fewer losses, the VictorianInterChurch Gambling Taskforce says there arenowmore opportunities for addicts to take apunt.

Its a great concern that were seeinggambling appearing on Facebook, on phoneapps, on all sorts of online applications.Wereseeing aggressive marketing of gambling throughsporting events, said taskforce chairmanMarkZirnsak.

Its really been pushed on people and reallyseeking to penetrate into their lives. I think thatsthe gambling industry responding to the drop in

traditional forms of gambling.Dr Zirnsak said pokies venues were struggling

to make themselves more appealing. The dataon losses suggests that less peoplewell, weknow less people are gambling on the pokies. Soin actual fact I think for a lot of people they havelost their appeal. But the disturbing part is youvestill got I think a crusted-on group of people withgambling problems who are doing themselves alot of harm. I definitely think thats still an issue.

While the length of her addiction still remainsundetermined the whole period is a blur and

Bardsley continues to sort through her memories she does remember eventually calling theGamblers Help number. She had decided thatshe deserved to be happy.

And I havent looked back, she says. Itsbeen a difficult journey of unpacking all thatstuff, but it was worth it.

Her advice to other gamblers is to take the leapand call the help line.

Do what you can to reclaim your life becauseit belongs to you it doesnt belong togambling.

Director Tanya Ryder-Barnes isaccustomed to living on the edge: in auniversity production she was forced tostand in without notice for a panic-stricken lead-ing lady, and as a teenager she directed her classinTheWizard of Oz.

All of which is sound preparation for shaping1812 Theatres latest production, The FarndaleAvenue Housing Estate Townswomens GuildDramatic SocietyMurderMystery, which is richin slapstick and relies on its set falling apart oncue.

It is her first time directing a farce, as well asher first showwith the Upper Ferntree Gullytheatre group.

The production is a play within a play and

follows the drama of the four ladies of TheFarndale Avenue Housing Estate TownswomensGuild Dramatic Society as they attempt topresent a play.

They choose to perform the ambitiousMurderat CheckmateManor, but the production isblighted by a series of disasters scenery fallsdown, sound effects are misplaced and cues aremissed.

Ryder-Barnes said the cast ranged in age frommid-20s to mid-70s and had worked hard to bestage ready within six weeks.

When I think back to auditions now, I thinkhow could I have even contemplated anyone elsefor these roles, she said.

The Emerald resident discovered her love oftheatre when she was living in England as a sixyear old and saw a stage production ofAnnie.

When she was in year 8 and bored with thebook they were studying in class, her teacherasked her what she would rather do I wantedto do a play.

Ryder-Barnes thought the teacher wassceptical, but several weeks later she had theclass performingTheWizard of Oz on stage.

I love the thrill of being able to affect people

by them being moved and laughing or feelingsadness or joy. I manipulate the situation to getthat to happen, she said.

Shes never keen to get on stage herself butwhen the drama happens off-stage, Ryder-Barnesis prepared to forget about the butterflies, such asthe time she filled in for a panicked actress.

Similarly, early in the season ofThe FarndaleAvenue Housing Estate Townswomens GuildDramatic SocietyMurderMystery, one of theolder actors hurt her back and scenes had to bere-blocked.

Thats the hard thing about theatre, its notfilmed, so youve just got to do it, she said.

1812 Theatre volunteers have been workingon the set every Sunday and Ryder-Barnes said itwas a challenging feat.

There are so many set jokes in the show, so itsheavily reliant on it falling apart magically, shesaid.

Whats old is new againEwan Kennedy reviews the latest VWBeetle

Masculine: More aggressive than ever before, the all-new Volkswagen Beetle has a nice stance on the road.

Featured: Painted dashboard and door tops.

They said it wouldnt last, that the VW NewBeetle, launched in 1998, would be a flashin the automotive pan. Pundits predicted therevived Beetle would drag in a few lovers of theold air-cooled VW from the 1960s and 70s thenquietly fade away.

Twelve years on, it has finally been discontin-ued, to be replaced by a new New Beetle, although this time around Volkswagen hasditched the New and its simply the Beetle.

While theres no doubting the intention of the

stylists to retain the shape that has been familiarsince 1936, this new Beetle is less feminine thanbefore. Whereas women were the biggest buyersof the New Beetle, the 2013 version has plenty ofmasculinity in its shape.

Indeed, the head of the design team, Frank JBruese, explained that there were elements of theAmerican hot rod culture in the lines of the car.

Theres no doubting the car is lower, heavier inthe rear, more aggressive in the window cutoutsand has a stronger stance on the road.

The most telling feature of all is the large aerospoiler that sits at the bottom edge of the rearwindscreen.

I like it. Then again, I liked the shape of whatwas to become the New Beetle from the first timeI saw it in concept form during the mid 90s.

The biggest and best changes in this third gen-eration Volkswagen Beetle are in the interior.Theres no longer the feeling youre sitting in theback of the car and peering over a vast expanseof dashtop through a small windscreen. Thesemi-upright windscreen gives you better visibil-ity than in many modern hatches and sedans.

The new Beetle feature we like most of all is thepainted dashboard and door tops, harking backto the mid years of the 1900s when this was thenorm.

New VW Beetle has a large speedo in front ofthe driver in a separate binnacle. Its easy to readat the slightest glance and revives memories ofthe old air-cooled cars.

At this stage, the only powerplant in the frontof the Beetle is the familiar Volkswagen 1.4-litreTwincharger. This engine uses a superchargerand turbocharger to provide strong torquethrough a big slab of the rev range.

Ride comfort is good on most surfaces and theslightly firm suspension provides the sort ofhandling that keen drivers will love.

Pure pleasure with a new-look frontEwan Kennedy road tests the MazdaMX-5

New theme: Bold new frontal style lifts Mazdas MX-5 away from its traditional shape.

Mazda has made bold changes to thefrontal styling of itsMX-5.Whereasevery model to date has had a grille thatharked back to the original 1989MX-5, thelatest model follows a theme similar to the otherpassenger models in the extensiveMazda range.

The result is that the latestMX-5 has a deepgrille shaped to give it a 3D appearance. Theheadlights have a gunmetal effect in theirsurrounds. Foglights are a fashion item thesedays, so theMX-5s stand out proudly to attractthe younger generation.

This is likely to be the final shape of the thirdgenerationMX-5 prior to the all-newmodelthats due in 2014. Fascinatingly, the next genera-tion ofMazdaMX-5 sees the very JapaneseMazda company teamed with the legendaryItalian Alfa Romeo organisation.

We cant wait to see what should be anexcellent mix of Italian style and Japanese buildquality. Cynics joke that it may be the other wayaround, but lets think positive.

TheMX-5s interior has also received a fairly

mild reworking. The previous silver decorationpanels and aluminium-finish steering wheel bezelhave been replaced by a glossy dark grey.

Two-tone Recaro sports seats with leather andperforated Alcantara facings were featured ontheMX-5 Coupe Sports versions we tested.

On the road during our recent weeks road testwe found the latestMazdaMX-5 to be asdelightful to drive as ever.We have been roadtesting this little roadster since 1989 and arepleased to report the newMX-5 continues toprovide driving in its purest form.

Being on the wrong side of 60, I have to admitthat getting in and out of theMazdaMX-5 is astruggle. But you dont have to be over 60 to findthat the interior is on the tight side.

Driving in its purest form in an affordablesports car doesnt come any better than with theMazdaMX-5. Other than the previouslymentioned niggles about interior space, we lovedevery moment in it.

Prices start at $47,200, not including govern-ment or dealer delivery charges.
