CIDA assists rural farmers to harness their entrepreneurial spirit

Let’s start with the time I joined a designconsultancy in Cambodia to work onproducts and services introduced byinternational aid programs and foundations.

• in lieu of sharing a language, we built rapport by sharing fun moments

• perk of the job: a farmer told us talking to us about her farming madeher realize how proud she was of her work and that of her neighbors.

Product purchase habitsdepended on seasonalrain patterns, but we sawan overall trend. Thechallenge was to makethe irrigation system“make sense” to farmerswho only defined irrigationas directly accessing apond.

In some cases Cambodianfarmers attached a showerhead to a water pump. Thejump to connect to a full-scaleirrigation system was thereforemuch easier.

Barriers to farmers purchasing and seeing a returnon their investment included a perceivedchallenge with the increased produce thatresulted from these improved farming techniques

Unsurprisinglto purchaseto some app

Once we gained an understanding how farming functions in the context of Cambodia’s harsh realities,we could create frameworks that enable us to seek opportunities that have not been tried yet.

GUIDING DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Currently, early adopters see the produce asenough proof for them to make newinvestments, increasingly large investments, intheir farm.

But for the much larger late-adopter contingent, having help before the harvest isn’t enough.Market access continues to be an issue.

SUCCESS encompasses more than thenumber of produce harvested.

People note the physical discomfort right away; it tookmultiple conversations to hear confessions of when peoplefelt weakest, most vulnerable, and felt they impacted theirrelationships.

“It's the small things that build up over time.”

What are the moments that stick out the most?

Current crutches address major issues: quality of style, usability, and comfort.

With that in mind, we took a look at the relationship

between value proposition and the type of purchasesof current products on the market:

Nothing is developed in a vacuum

Current products hit the low hanging fruit, and more.We were curious of what was considered “& more”

We began by playing around with the concept of confidence. The low hangidisplay thereof. Just as in the animal kingdom, how could we help crutch usertheir personality went beyond their physical handicap?

Solid Works mock-ups, early stageprototypes

After walking around in crutches for days,we pinpointed the moments thatundermined our sense of independence.

Start somewhere, right?

Toying around with skins, we thought perhaps“repping yourself”would win back that confidence.

as long as you know when to pivot…

“Information is consta

Communication is key;day-to-day changesare instantaneous, and yet feel out of theblue.

So turns out, there are a lot many more people than“construction workers” involved in building a building…

As in so many things, the challenges at a site are notany one thing; and as in all relationships, the key was“communication”. For us, it become important tounderstand what each of the different playersexpected, and how they defined a successful

exchange of information.

Sonim’s strength lies in providing a deviceappropriate for extreme situations. Linked withsmart-capabilities, it needs to be indispensablefor employers.
