About Kochi (Cochin)Formerly known as Cochin, Kochi is located along the Arabian Sea, on the south-west coast ofIndia. Kochi is one of the seven taluks of Ernakulam district in the state of Kerala. Straddled bythe backwaters, it is bordered by the Arabian Sea in the west and urbanised region in the east. The major part of the city lies at sea level along the coastline of around 48 km. Spread over anarea of 94.88 sq km, Kochi is the second largest city of Kerala. Inhabited by 601,574 people, the city of Kochi is a part of an extended metropolitan region.

Comprising Kakkanad in the north-east, Tripunithura in the south-east and mainlandErnakulam, Kochi is a part of the Greater Cochin region. Areas like Old Kochi, Kadavanthra, thesuburbs of Edapally, the exurbia of Kalamassery and some islands of the Vembanad Lake, arealso included in Kochi. It also encompasses areas like Mattancherry, Fort Kochi, Palluruthy andThoppumpady.

History of KochiAccording to legend, Kochi was the centre of the Indian spice trade and was immigrated by theArabs, British, Chinese, Dutch and Portuguese for trade purposes. During this period, the citywas referred to as Cochym, Cochin, Cochi and even Cocym.

The city of Kochi gained importance as a port in 1341 AD, when the port at Kodungallur wasruined by flooding of the Periyar River. In the 15th century, this port city began prospering, asthe Portuguese penetrated the Indian Ocean. The first Portuguese factory was established byVasco da Gama, while the first European fort in India was built by the Portuguese Viceroy,Afonso de Albuquerque. In 1635, the British settled in Kochi; however, the Dutch forced themout in 1663.

Under the Dutch rule, Kochi developed as an important trade centre. Haidar Ali, the militantprince of Mysore, took over the city in 1776. However, his son Tipu Sultan surrendered to theBritish in 1791.

After the Anglo-Dutch Treaty in 1814, Kochi came under the administration of the British. Underthe command of Sir Robert Bistrow, the forts built across the city were destroyed and Kochi wasdeveloped into a major Indian harbour.

Willingdon Island, which now houses the Naval Airport, Cochin Port and Southern NavalCommand headquarters, was built during the British rule in Kochi. In 1866, Fort Kochi wasconverted into a municipality and its first Municipal Council election was conducted in 1883.Later, when India gained independence in 1947, Kochi became the first princely state to join theIndian Union willingly. In 1956, the state of Kerala was formed by the merger of Travancore,Malabar and Kochi.

Featured review about Kochi (Cochin)Kochi Kolling"Kochi, land of coconut trees, banana plantations, and fried fish is one of the most populardestinations in Kerala, South India. Kochi is highly developed and you will find severalinternational shopping brands and restaurants. What I liked most about Kochi is that mostpeople speak and understand English and so getting around is a little easier. The mostcommon way of commuting in Kochi is by Autos. They don’t have a mixed meter system andcharge exorbitant rates to take you anywhere. But the autos are nice and comfortable and whowants to haggle when you are on holiday. It’s pretty hot throughout the year so make sure youtake appropriate clothes.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: I liked these three restaurants the best. Ella, Coffee Beansand Sea Food Restaurant. Ella is situated on MG road and serves a variety of authentic Keraladishes. The decor is classy as well as clean, service excellent, food tasty, and prices veryreasonable. We had Kerala Parothas, a piece of masala fried fish covered in a banana leaf, and a portion of prawns in a coconut gravy. Great place for lunch and dinner. Coffee Beans, situated in Panampily Nagar is known for their appams and chicken stew and having sampledthis I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of this trademark Kerala dish. SeafoodRestaurant in Fort Kochi is another place that served delicious Kerala cuisine. Though we justhas a fish curry and rice combo with a portion on prawns served in the side. It was simplyfabulous.

Activities & things to do: Fort Kochi is a nice place to spend a day. Please don't go looking for afort as you won't find one. What you will find are the Chinese Fishing nets, a well maintainedDutch Cemetery, and Dutch Palace, and some very old churches. There are a lot of shops thatsell shell jewelry, cloth bags, clothes, and other nick knacks. For those who love cooking, you'llfind a number of spice shops in Broadway near MG road the most popular one being theGujarati spice shop. Bimbi's is famous for their chips, so make sure you pick up some bananaor tapioca chips. They don't taste as good anywhere else. If you want to pick up some curios

Page 4/16

and handicrafts then stop at Kairali on MG road. If you are up for going on a ferry ride then, board a ferry from the Main Boat Jetty in the southern part of the city which will take you theother parts of the city. Your visit would be incomplete without visiting the Jewish Synagoguewhich is situated in Mattancherry.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: One can reach Kochi by air, rail, sea, and road. The airport is located at Nedumbassery, about 30 kms off Kochi . And the bus and train stationis situated in Ernakulam.I traveled to Kochi by bus and it took me about 10 hrs to get there. Ifyou want to go by bus then make sure you book a Mercedes Benz bus as its the the best way totravel. When in the city, be prepared to do a lot of traveling in autos as places are not that close.Autos don't like waiting and might charge you more if you want them to wait. You are going tobe spending a lot on auto fares so keep a lot of hundreds handy. the minimum they will chargeis 50 bucks." - Jackie O, Bangalore, Nov 22, 2011

Fort Kochi- Witness to the Rulers of India"A person travelling to Cochin will not understand the importance till he actually strolls aroundthe lanes of Fort Kochi. This is evidence of rulers of India over 500 years, spread over less than10 sq km.The relaxed pace of life is contagious; and if you go during Christmas/New Year, it’s veryemotional - Gandhi's dream on Secularism comes true here - all communities celebrateChristmas.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Dutch Palace is not grand; visitors who have seen otherpalaces, please note - do not get upset as this has to be seen for the historical reason. JewishSynagogue and also the St Francis Church hold similar historical importance. However, pleasedo check as they do have rather inconvenient timings & holidays. Chinese fishing nets is a mustsee but now the catches are not much apparently. I assume these are being run more as atourist attraction. Shopping not recommended.

Activities & things to do: Walking around the Streets of Kochi and eating in the smallrestaurants which existed from the days of the Raj is an experience in itself. If you do not plan tovisit other places in Kerala for backwater trips, then you could stay in the small home stayBackwater Retreats in Kumbalangi 5 km away and spent time in Fort Kochi.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Train to Ernakulam; get a taxi and head straightfor Fort Kochi, not wasting time in mainland as the price will shock you in the little uppishrestaurants. Please do stay in one of the home stays which you can find on the internet. Anewcomer, unless having made prior bookings, would not get much help as people other thanthose of Fort Kochi in whole of Kerala ask too many questions - especially if you are an Indiantourist. Careful: monsoon, unlike other parts of Kerala, are okay; but Kochi needs a lot of spiritto visit. Restaurants are not exactly a vegetarian’s delight. Try the guys who fry your fish nearthe Kohder House lane heading towards the beach near the nets." - Surej Krishnadass,Bangalore, May 26, 2006
